About the Definitive Technology Symphony 1

Jeff Miller

Striking first impression

When I first pulled the Definitive Technology Symphony 1 headphones from their leather carrying case, I noticed how solid and well-built they were. Yet with my ears sealed comfortably inside the plush leather cups, they felt surprisingly light. After adjusting the solid aluminum sliders, and wirelessly pairing up my Bluetooth®-enabled phone, I fired up some tunes. The sound immediately drew me in.

Striking first impression

in airport setting

The Symphony 1 headphones' active noise cancellation washes away the busy sounds of travel.

Noise cancellation and big, natural soundstage

While the active noise cancellation dissolved away office distractions, the big 50mm drivers produced a compelling soundstage that was practically three dimensional — not the "between the ears" sound I expected. I played a recent live recording of a Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave show here in Charlottesville, VA.

I'd been bummed out about missing it, but the Symphony 1 sound teleported me to a live show setting, maybe 10 rows back. During riffs and jams, the brass, drums, and bass guitar played right in front of me — I could pick out each instrument. The horns sounded clear, and the detailed bassline had me groovin' through the workday.

Convenient wireless listening with Bluetooth

Along with sound that's wide open, the Symphony 1 headphones give you freedom to roam around while you listen. They connect to your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or tablet wirelessly within a range of 30 feet. You get up to 15 hours of wireless playback with noise cancellation on a full charge.

Buttons on the right earcup activate Bluetooth and noise cancellation. Above that, three more buttons let you control music playback and volume, and also answer phone calls. The built-in microphones capture your voice for clear calls, and also help adjust the level of noise cancellation for the room.

Signature Definitive sound you can take anywhere

The Symphony 1 may be Def Tech's first ever headphone, but the company's high-performance speakers have been popular among audio aficionados for years. All that experience shows here, from the Symphony 1's no-nonsense industrial look to their clear, rich, well-balanced sound.

Included cables give you more ways to listen

If you run out of battery or you're in a situation where you don't need wireless, you still have listening options. A 3.5mm cable is included for listening both with or without noise-cancellation. You can also plug the included USB charging cable into your computer to receive a digital audio stream and take advantage of the built-in DAC.

Product Research

Features

Overview: Definitive Technology's Symphony 1 headphones combine the latest technology with premium materials and fine craftsmanship to deliver a rich, personal listening experience. These over-the-ear headphones have high-quality 50mm drivers, Bluetooth wireless technology with aptX, and Active Noise Cancellation to give you the best sound quality without distractions from the outside world. The Symphony 1s come with a soft cloth pouch with a drawstring closure, and a stitched leather-covered case with a zippered closure.

Bluetooth with aptX: Built-in Bluetooth lets you listen to your favorite music without a physical connection to your sound source. The wireless range of the headphones is approximately 30 feet. The aptX codec can deliver CD-like quality audio over Bluetooth, even without a wired connection.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): The Symphony 1 headphones feature an over-ear design to create a seal which reduces surrounding noise. In addition, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) electronically rejects external sounds that can disrupt your listening experience, so you can immerse yourself in your music. You can enable the ANC mode at any time, regardless of whether you are playing a music source. The ANC will stay active for up to 3 hours with no music playing and no button presses.

On-board Controls: The headphones feature buttons on the bottom of the right ear cup for toggling on the power, Bluetooth, and ANC. There are also on-board controls on the back of the right ear cup that allow you to adjust the volume or mute the audio, control music tracks, and take phone calls. Music and phone controls include: Next Track, Fast Forward, Previous Track, Rewind, Play/Pause, Answer/End Call, Decline Call, and Switch to Incoming or On-Hold Call. The built-in beam-forming microphone is also located on the right ear cup for clear, hands-free telephone communication.

Digital-to-Analog Conversion: The Symphony 1 has a built-in headphone DAC (digital-to-analog converter), so you can listen directly to your digital music tracks on your computer. Using the provided 6.5' Micro USB cable, you can access the music stored on your hard drive.

Power Requirements: The Definitive Technology Symphony 1 headphones are powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery. The battery can be charged via your computer or a USB power port (Input: 5V 0.7A) using the provided Micro USB charging cable. LEDs on the power button indicate when the headphones are charging, or showing the remaining charge by the number of flashes (1 flash=20% to 5 flashes=100%). With a full charge, the Symphony 1's battery will last up to 15 hours with ANC disabled, or up to 10 hours with ANC enabled.

Auxiliary Cable: Using the supplied 42" Auxiliary Cable (with 3.5mm plug), you can listen to your music when a hard-wired connection is preferred or required. You can listen in Active Mode (power on), or Passive Mode (power off) to conserve battery power, or if the battery is exhausted. With the power off, you will lose all volume controls, microphone, and telephone functions. When you plug in the Auxiliary cable, Bluetooth is automatically disabled.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Q
Do you have to throw these away when the rechargeable battery dies?

A
I don't know about replacing the battery, but the headphones work just fine without power in passive mode, with pretty good sound isolation. So if the battery ever died, you could still use them as regular headphones.
