Carrying case

A luxury carrying case holds the headphones, charging cable, and optional listening cable.

Striking first impression

When I first pulled the Definitive Technology Symphony 1 headphones from their leather carrying case, I noticed how solid and well-built they were. Yet with my ears sealed comfortably inside the plush leather cups, they felt surprisingly light. After adjusting the solid aluminum sliders, and wirelessly pairing up my Bluetooth®-enabled phone, I fired up some tunes. The sound immediately drew me in.

While the active noise cancellation dissolved away office distractions, the big 50mm drivers produced a compelling soundstage that was practically three dimensional — not the "between the ears" sound I expected. I played a recent live recording of a Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave show here in Charlottesville, VA. I'd been bummed out about missing it, but the Symphony 1 sound teleported me to a live show setting, maybe 10 rows back. During riffs and jams, the brass, drums, and bass guitar played right in front of me — I could pick out each instrument. The horns sounded clear, and the detailed bassline had me groovin' through the workday.

Convenient wireless listening with Bluetooth

Along with sound that's wide open, the Symphony 1 headphones give you freedom to roam around while you listen. They connect to your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or tablet wirelessly within a range of 30 feet. You get up to 15 hours of wireless playback with noise cancellation on a full charge.

Buttons on the right earcup activate Bluetooth and noise cancellation. Above that, three more buttons let you control music playback and volume, and also answer phone calls. The built-in microphones capture your voice for clear calls, and also help adjust the level of noise cancellation for the room.

Signature Definitive sound you can take anywhere

The Symphony 1 may be Def Tech's first ever headphone, but the company's high-performance speakers have been popular among audio aficionadosfor years. All that experience shows here, from the Symphony 1's no-nonsense industrial look to their clear, rich, well-balanced sound.

Included cables give you more ways to listen

If you run out of battery or you're in a situation where you don't need wireless, you still have listening options. A 3.5mm cable is included for listening both with or without noise-cancellation. You can also plug the included USB charging cable into your computer to receive a digital audio stream and take advantage of the built-in DAC.

We got these for my husband for Father's Day. He fell in love after the first use. On his first business trip he was amazed at how well the noise reduction worked! He couldn't believe he had been hearing so much noise while traveling before!

Nothing short of spectacular! Not surprising considering they are Def Tech headphones. I've always been a fan of their speakers, and these headphones are no different.

Pros: Great sound, comfort and noise cancellation

Cons: Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Sorry but I had to send them back.

I bought these phones because of their superior ratings and not just from Crutchfield customers. Yet I have found the sound quality to be below average in comparison to my Bose QC-15s. Here's the acid test for me. I've been playing and listening to music for a long time, and I have a lot of music on various devices. When played with no EQ whatsoever, my QC-15s are crystal clear. The Symphony 1s sound like a muffler is coloring the sound. I could only get one EQ setting to slightly improve the sound, but it was not by much and certainly not enough to change my mind about these phones. The ANC next to the QC-15s was just average. The QC-15s defeat the hideous sound of all the riding mowers in my neighborhood when I'm trying to just read a book or watch a game on tv. The Symphony 1s do a pretty good job on the ANC except on the loudest motor noise. The muffled sound quality alone made up my mind. So, I called Bose and asked them if they would be coming out with wireless, Bluetooth noise-cancelling phones anytime soon. They sounded hopeful, and my bet is they will produce them sooner rather than later. So, unless someone can convince me otherwise, I will just put my desire for this product aside until Bose steps up to the table.

Pros: Functional Good Design Wireless

Cons: Muffled, below average sound for music Average ANC

Fantastic sound, very balanced. Their large size makes them extremely comfortable around the ears, but the headband pushes a bit hard. The great fit necessitates some bulk, I usually leave that monster of a case at home when traveling. As others have mentioned, it is a bit too easy to turn them off accidentally, though after some use one learns. One of the sounds when powering on is uncomfortably loud. The sounds for turning on and off ANC is identical, which makes it harder to tell than it needs to be. Like all headphones they do not mix your voice in when making calls, which is a bit disorienting. ANC does not hiss like on the Bose QC 25, though seems slightly less efficient (still sufficient though in a plane or train). However on the plus side it can be turned on and off, which is useful in cases where you do not want to be entirely cut off from your environment.

Pros: - Fantastic sound, very balanced - ANC does not produce hiss

Cons: - Headband pushes down a bit hard - Minor use issues that could be fixed with a firmware update

These are without a doubt the best over ear headphones I've ever owned. I am partial to the over ear design so I was looking for a bluetooth version with excellent noise canceling to replace my Bose QC-15. These fit the bill and then some. They sound fabulous and the noise canceling is excellent and on par with the QC-15s without the "pressure" feeling. Though they appear bulky, they actually feel great on my ears and head. I even sleep with them with no trouble. I also like the fact that they can still be used in passive mode should you choose to, also with a cable if the battery is dead (and with even better audiophile quality I might add wired), and that they can be used while charging. A full charge has lasted me over 12 hours. I look forward to using these babies when I take my trans pacific fights. A great purchase and one I am happy I made.

I'm new to higher end headphones, so please take this review with a grain of salt -- my only other experience is with my Grado SR60. I am really enjoying my purchase of the Definitive Symphony1 headphones. Audio quality is the best I've ever experienced (no surprise there), and I love being hands free and either talking on the phone or listening to music. I've also used them the past weekend morning to try to sleep in with my kids yelling in the background! They also sound pretty decent in passive mode, though they have more power and aural 'oomph' in active mode. Build quality seems to be good, though time will tell. They should last longer than the Grado's, which perhaps weren't treated as nicely (carried around without protection in my work bag). The buttons are pretty easy to get used to within a day or two. The carrying case is very protective and not as huge as other reviewers seemed to make out (I also carry a larger bag than most people). They are comfortable, though I do want to take a break from them after a couple of hours.

Product Research

Overview: Definitive Technology's Symphony 1 headphones combine the latest technology with premium materials and fine craftsmanship to deliver a rich, personal listening experience. These over-the-ear headphones have high-quality 50mm drivers, Bluetooth wireless technology with aptX, and Active Noise Cancellation to give you the best sound quality without distractions from the outside world. The Symphony 1s come with a soft cloth pouch with a drawstring closure, and a stitched leather-covered case with a zippered closure.

Bluetooth with aptX: Built-in Bluetooth lets you listen to your favorite music without a physical connection to your sound source. The wireless range of the headphones is approximately 30 feet. The aptX codec can deliver CD-like quality audio over Bluetooth, even without a wired connection.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): The Symphony 1 headphones feature an over-ear design to create a seal which reduces surrounding noise. In addition, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) electronically rejects external sounds that can disrupt your listening experience, so you can immerse yourself in your music. You can enable the ANC mode at any time, regardless of whether you are playing a music source. The ANC will stay active for up to 3 hours with no music playing and no button presses.

On-board Controls: The headphones feature buttons on the bottom of the right ear cup for toggling on the power, Bluetooth, and ANC. There are also on-board controls on the back of the right ear cup that allow you to adjust the volume or mute the audio, control music tracks, and take phone calls. Music and phone controls include: Next Track, Fast Forward, Previous Track, Rewind, Play/Pause, Answer/End Call, Decline Call, and Switch to Incoming or On-Hold Call. The built-in beam-forming microphone is also located on the right ear cup for clear, hands-free telephone communication.

Digital-to-Analog Conversion: The Symphony 1 has a built-in headphone DAC (digital-to-analog converter), so you can listen directly to your digital music tracks on your computer. Using the provided 6.5' Micro USB cable, you can access the music stored on your hard drive.

Power Requirements: The Definitive Technology Symphony 1 headphones are powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery. The battery can be charged via your computer or a USB power port (Input: 5V 0.7A) using the provided Micro USB charging cable. LEDs on the power button indicate when the headphones are charging, or showing the remaining charge by the number of flashes (1 flash=20% to 5 flashes=100%). With a full charge, the Symphony 1's battery will last up to 15 hours with ANC disabled, or up to 10 hours with ANC enabled.

Auxiliary Cable: Using the supplied 42" Auxiliary Cable (with 3.5mm plug), you can listen to your music when a hard-wired connection is preferred or required. You can listen in Active Mode (power on), or Passive Mode (power off) to conserve battery power, or if the battery is exhausted. With the power off, you will lose all volume controls, microphone, and telephone functions. When you plug in the Auxiliary cable, Bluetooth is automatically disabled.
