Finally, a camcorder you can take anywhere — even ten feet underwater.

The Kodak PlaySport features a rugged, shock-resistant design, so you can take it along on your next rock climbing or snowboarding trip. Built-in software makes it easy to upload videos of your adventures to YouTube and Facebook. Don't let the simple design convince you that it's nothing but a toy — the PlaySport records beautiful HD video. Add a 32GB SDHC card, and you'll be able to shoot all day long on top of a snow covered mountain or down in a tropical lagoon.

From the review HD Fireworks with the Kodak PlaySport ZX3

"The PlaySport lives up to its name — it's waterproof, and is designed to take a spill or two. It's also pretty easy to operate. I never did read the manual. I just started experimenting with the camera and soon puzzled things out. Even other family members who normally find the gear I bring home challenging were soon shooting their own videos."

From birthday parties to YouTube™ antics, camcorders let you capture moments you can share with friends and family, or the world at large. For maximum portability, check out our smaller cams that fit into a pocket or purse. For high-def videos that look awesome on your HDTV, go for a slightly larger model with a better lens and image sensor.

EASY TO USE

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ZX3 is simple to use and does a pretty good job. However, the software program included in the camera did not load on my computer upon first connection as advertised; in fact, it never loaded. Talked with another owner of the ZX3, and they had same problem.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought this for our niece and she absolutely loves it. She was using her parents' IPhones to make videos and movies all the time and this camera worked out great as a replacement. It works well indoors and outdoors and the sound is quite good.

Great video camera for the price

Written By Sue, Glenmoore, pa on Friday, June 17, 2011

Get the extended memory card! The camera is really easy to use, small enough to put in a pocket, and waterproof, so you don't have to worry about weather when you are filming your child's sporting event! It is also really easy to upload to your computer, youtube and there are several lighting settings.

The one minus is that the screen reflects the sun glare, so when you are videoing sports, it is hard to keep the camera centered on the action when the sun glare darkens the screen.

Great Little Camera!

Written By mjo, Massachusetts on Monday, June 13, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only had the camera for a few weeks now and I have recorded lots of things I never would have before! This camera is quick and easy to use. I never liked to carry around my bulky full-size camcorder, so this is a great alternative to keep at hand. Most of my use has been to record softball games and it has been perfect. I was even able to capture her first homerun. Downloading is easy, but you may have to convert the .mov file to another format for playing on a dvd player. There are many free conversion programs online that work great for that purpose. Picture quality is surprising good for the price and convenience of the camera! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick and easy way to capture videos!

Camera leaks and is unreliable

Written By JerryA, Palm City, FL on Thursday, May 05, 2011

This camera leaked on my first snorkel. It was replaced with a refurbished camera by Kodak. That camera again leaked on a snorkel and was again replaced. The third camera failed to operate after 1 month and was never used in water. I now have the fourth camera. Kodak will only replace cameras under warranty with a refurbished camera. They obviously do not do a good job of repair. It takes good video but the sound is noisy in wind. I recommend trying another brand.

Great little camera

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera was great for taking on a cruise to Mexico and Belize- snorkeling,
cavetubing, and swimming! I bought the floating wrist strap, 16gb memory
card, and an extra battery to go with it.. I was so concerned about battery life!
But I have never used the extra battery. I had the camera with me on these
excursions from the ship and thought the battery wouldn't last after reading the
reviews, but I didn't have a problem. Of course, I wasn't filming the enitre time
either - I probably took about an hour's worth of video on each excursion. Also, I
think people who had the battery die were taking continuous video, I took 30
seconds to 5 minutes clips at a time. Also, the software included allows you to
take snapshots straight from the video - awesome! Works GREAT in natural
light - terrible in the dark, but that is to be expected. However I took videos
inside the ship during the day with no problems. Obviously this camera isn't
the best, but it works great for rugged outdoorsy wet adventures! Oh, and 16 gb
was more than enough for me. I only filled up about 35% of the memory card! I
took about 1.5 hours of video clips on {780p 60 fps} total for the 7 day cruise
[you'll use it less than you think!! but I'm glad I had it]
Giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think the quality is subpar to other HD
cameras, but more than efficient to get the job done. I suggest getting
photoshop to edit your still pictures that you capture from the video!

Crutchfield is Great, Kodak is not

Written By Matt, Washington on Monday, March 28, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first camera arrived and would not charge at all. Went to the interwebs and found this was a common issue reported by many users. Contacted Crutchfield and they sent a new one out right away via two day air (Crutchfield was AWESOME through this whole ordeal). New camera arrived with the exact same issues. After two failures back to back and Kodak wanting me to pay to ship it to them to repair or give me a refurb (I didn't pay for a refurn, so why would I want one), I sent this camera back as well. Maybe I can see how the GE waterproof pocket cam works. Be warned, these cameras are flakey.

Very impressive performance

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Kodak PlaySport Zx3 for my grandson, and had a few weeks to play
with it before passing it on. Having used much higher-end equipment for event
videography, I wasn't expecting anything special from this little wonder. I was,
and still am very impressed with the video quality produced with the Zx3.
Images are quite true-to-life, and even the monaural sound is good. Through
trial and error, I found that the 720p setting works best for me... smoother and
more real looking than 1020p, but that might change under different shooting
conditions. Still photos are quite acceptable, as long as you keep in mind there
is no flash built in.

Considering the size, price, and inherent point-and-shoot simplicity of this Kodak
Zx3, I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who has even an occasional
need for a handy, easy-to-use camcorder. I'm seriously considering one for me,
now that the grandson has this one. To borrow a phrase I wish I had thought of
myself, "The best camera (or camcorder) is the one you have with you". And this
model is very easy to have with you. And the waterproof feature is a comforting
bonus, especially if you get caught in the rain. Oh, make sure to get an extra
battery and an SDHC card.

Great waterproof HD camcorder!

Written By Rob, Seacoast, NH USA on Monday, February 28, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to be used for a vacation in Cancun Mexico. I bought a 32GB SanDisk
series 4 SDHC card which works perfectly.

I used this in the pool at the resort, up to around 6-8 feet in depth with no issues. The
HD image is very good and the audio, even while under water, seems outstanding for a
waterproof camera. I took the advice I read from other people that reviewed the camera
and I shot all of my video in 60FPS 720p, which appears incredible.

I never came close to filling up the 32gb card, but I would still recommend having a
spare. I did note that the battery that comes with the camera seems to run down quickly,
which prompted me to order a spare and also a dock style charger so that I can charge
a spare battery and still use the camcorder.

I rented a jet ski and held the camera in one hand while riding. I hit many waves and got
some great air. The camera worked very well and the audio was great.

The camera comes with an unimpressive tether, which I quickly threw out and fashioned
my own sturdy tether with military paracord. I would not trust the stock tether in anything
but the kiddie pool.

Not sure what they could do to improve this except for ship with a bigger memory card
and perhaps work on the battery life issues. Otherwise this would have been 5/5 stars.

VERY HAPPY WITH THIS PURCHASE!

Wonderful Memories Made!

This is a great product! I love that I can use my video camera virtually anywhere! And if
my son drops it in the sink or pulls it in the tub- it's still going to work and I still get the
same great quality pictures and videos. Just wish it would've came with an SD memory
card.

Kodak Playsport

Written By Anonymous, San Diego on Saturday, February 12, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pretty neat little camera. Performs about as I expected. Takes a good still
image and what looks to be pretty good video.

In the bright sun the screen is very difficult to see. Took it skiing and kept
it in my jacket pocket all day. Got some good stills and some video in spite of
the difficult to see screen.

Have not tried it under water as yet, that's next.

For an inexpensive HD camera I would say buy it and have fun.

ZX3 - nice

Written By Brent, KY on Wednesday, February 02, 2011

This is a pretty cool gadget. Lots of bag for the buck. The video is great and with the
picture stablization it is hard to make a bad video. Don't expect great zooming or close
ups as the lens has limitations due to its design. Great for traveling. Only thing I would
like to see added is the ablility to take a photo during video taping. All in all I'm pleased
with the ZX3.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Keeping in mind it's intended purpose (outdoors), this camera works well. I took
it out on a kayak where it was repeatedly exposed to salt water and sand. It's 5
megapixel camera worked well for stills as well as video. The image stabilization
did a good job on the rocking and rolling of the Pacific Ocean (we were not in
the bay!).
This is not a low light or no light camera, as it has no flash and a small
aperture. I have not tried it underwater yet, as I am still getting used to it,
but I intend to.
For a quick handling waterproof / dust proof beach camera I was pleasantly
surprised at the picture and video quality. If I were to lose it, I would buy it
again.

Mediocre

Written By Anonymous, Philadelphia on Sunday, December 26, 2010

If you're not looking specifically for a waterproof camera for taking pictures in water, then do
not buy this camera. The video quality is awful at any resolution and degrades even further
in low light scenes. Chances are your cell phone takes comparable videos. I thought I was
being picky, but even my wife noticed how bad the videos are. Worst yet, I've had better
success with her iPod video nano which doesn't claim to be HD. I guess that's my biggest
gripe is that there's nothing "High Definition" about the resulting videos from the Kodak.

I got this device for Christmas, but it's going back.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a forestry company with my husband. I focus on marketing within our company. I take videos to explain our company to clients. I also do videos for current clients to help explain what we think we need to do to help their property/trees. Telling a quick story with a video limits confusion, and helps explain exactly, which tree, or which part of the property we are talking about. Bottomline, I take quick videos and I like the ease and durability so far. The price is great for small companies that need to be online, and making videos to explain a story for their clients / market.

Great video

Written By H-TownMike, Houston, TX on Thursday, October 21, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this strictly for the ability to do 1080p video in less than favorable daytime environments. If your looking for a robust point and shoot, your looking in the wrong place. The only saving grace this has as far as point and shoot is the 16:9 aspect it does for photos (Good for desktop backgrounds). It's horrible in low light for video and pictures, so if your planning on using it at night, find another camera.

One issue I did have that was annoying is I had a class 4, 4GB SD card and the video was really choppy and grainy. I was ticked off. I did some research and folks recommended a minimum of class 6. So on a trip recently I had to go to a local store to pick up some stuff I forgot and I went ahead and bought a class 4 8 GB SD card, and it worked like a charm. I guess the card I had was too old. The video and pictures were much better! I did all video modes and it was good.

Oh yeah, the sound is actually pretty good too, and the anti-shake on it functions as it should as well. So since the memory purchase, this camera performs and functions as I wanted it to. Hope this helps!

perfect for on the run!

Perfect except for one thing

Written By Luke C, Vienna, VA on Thursday, October 07, 2010

Received this wonderful gadget a while ago but never had a chance to take it snorkeling until a few weeks back. Having thoroughly tested it out in the Atlantic, I can safely say this is the best portable digi camcorder for the buck out there. As others have stated, the best quality can be had at 720P @60FPS. Video and audio is crisp (provided things aren't too dim). The fact that it comes with the mini HDMI cable seals the deal.

But with that, comes my only gripe. When connected directly to my TVs via the included HDMI cable, the camcorder will always output at 1080i. I can't seem to change it anywhere. Even though the video being played is at a different resolution, the output is still 1080i. This behavior occurs on my Sony LCD and Mitsu DLP 1080p sets. When the video files are played from the memory card on a PC, the videos are at the proper resolution, but playing directly from the camcorder connected to a TV, the output resolution is stuck.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It serves its purpose because i needed something rugged and tough, it survived rough handling. It is good if you want to take high quality photos and videos just for fun, not a lot of features though but the image stabilization feature helps during jittery moments. So in my opinion the Kodak ZX3 is all you need to shoot quality videos and still images under water and any kind of activities, just pair it with an 8 gigabyte SD card or higher and you're good to go.

Very nice little camera. Very easy to use, not may buttons to fumble with. Solidly built.
The part i like best is the expandable memory and the fact that you can change the battery if you need to. Batteries are very inexpensive on the manufacturers website. Everything about this camera is a breeze. I have a 16GB card and when you record in 720p it gives you about 4.5 hours, in full HD1080p you get about 3 hours. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After putting this purchase off since Christmas, I finally got the ZX3 for a family vacation. Could not be happier with the performance of the camera -- both the video and stills. The camera is easy to use and I was filming right out of the box. Waterproof feature is fantastic and works better than advertised (I was greater than15 feet down on multiple occasions with no water penetration). Image stabilization was really good and made the video from the helicopter look semi-professional.

Only drawback I can point out is performance in low light was not superior, but at the price point who can really expect it to do everything! I would buy another one today!

Very Impressed!!!

Written By Kalibr, West Palm Beach , FL on Wednesday, June 09, 2010

I was in the market for a new video camera. I read many user and critic reviews about the Flip and Kodak HD video cameras. It seemed that most preferred the Kodak, so I decided on the PlaySport Zx3. I was immediately floored by the video quality of this small, inexpensive camera. The 1080p video was simply amazing!!! However, I must point out that any minor hand movement is amplified - probably because the camera is so lightweight. The electronic image stabilization is not much help here as it creates a distorted tilting effect in the bottom half of the video. Nevertheless, if you learn to keep the camera steady, the 1080p video is very impressive. If you intend to record fast moving objects like sports, you're better off using the 720p 60fps setting. The camera also has a 5MP still setting which takes fairly good pics. My only complaint is that the 2" LCD screen is difficult to see in direct sunlight. The biggest reason I purchased this camera was its waterproof capability. I used it in our pool and the images looked great. It's hard to believe that this little camera with its tiny lens could give such impressive results.

Good little camera

Written By J D, Washington State on Monday, June 07, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just received this camera last week, but it appears to be an excellent little camcorder for the money. 1080i images are good quality, and can be great quality if the cameraman and the subject are not moving quickly. 780p, 60fps is probably the best way to go for action shots - such as filming and then critiquing my own horrible golf swing. But for the price and portability, you're not going to find a better product.

One con about the camera is the horrible battery life - one charge will get you less than one hour of filming time - this camera SERIOUSLY needs either a better battery, or to include an extra one in the original packaging.

Overall this is the coolest product I have used. I especially like the fact that it comes with a HDMI cable, you can film while charging and how fast it boots up. The only issue I had was trying to play back using the A/V cable. I had to hold it into the camera as I was viewing as it did not fit tight enough.

The Playsport fits into a really great video/active person's must haves gadget list.
Tested the waterproofing out of the box, as everyone should, and it is solidly built.
It has simple point and shoot, settings and easy to learn menus.
The camera and video are powerful and with everyday SD memory cards available anywhere you save loads of money compared to other proprietary memory card video cameras like the FLIP.
CONS: Larger sized than Flip, View Screen is small relative to size of unit, Zoom is not too powerful and gets grainy at maximum power.
PROS: Great Price, tough built, simple menus, powerful lenses and infinite memory possible (max 32 GB/SD card), WATERPROOF (Read childproof).
I never give perfect scores for anything but for the price, all in all, this unit is perfectly positioned for sporty, clumsy, outdoorsy families like ours.

Kodak Playsport

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this camcorder for my daughter's birthday because she has a 7 month old son. She was constantly taking pictures and videos with her IPhone but it isn't really that practical for all that on a phone. This camcorder seemed perfect since it can go under water, is easy to carry and very easy to operate. So far she is extremely happy with this Kodak and when she plays back videos on her computer, the videos and pictures are excdeptionally clear. She is very very happy with it.

Great little HD Cam

Written By Chris, New Jersey on Sunday, May 16, 2010

I bought this camera right before a trip to Disney because I wanted something small and lightweight, and the water proof feature doesn't hurt either. This is a simple, easy to use camera that takes high quality video. I took this on some roller coasters and into the pool with no issues. It handles light changes very quickly and according to one comment on you tube, I screamed like a sissy on the roller coaster ....so I have that going for me..which is nice. The only two negatives I noticed were that the audio gets muffled for a little while after being submerged in water, and the lack of a proper zoom. But for the price point, picture quality, and portability you can't go wrong.

Nice camera, Great Service!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Kodak Zx3 PlaySport is a remarkable video camera. We purchased it to have a small camera to take quick video of our new baby. It has fulfilled this and much more. My wife likes it because it has intuitive controls. I like it because I can drop the .mov files straight into Adobe Premiere CS4 with out having to transcode the footage first. Playing and editing 1080p takes a good bit of processing power, so the option to use 720p at 30 and 60 frames is great. I was impressed that Kodak included an HDMI cable. My only complaint so far is that the audio is only mono, and there is no option to plug in an external microphone. The microphone does a great job, but I am wishing Kodak takes note of this for the next model.

In my time working for the US government overseas, we have run into many problems when ordering and shipping products to military APO/FPO addresses. I could not believe how easy it was ordering from Crutchfield. I placed the order on a Wednesday at 1200 in Germany, and my order shipped by 1800 the same day! It arrived in my military post office box on the next Monday, that was 5 days from the USA to Germany with FREE shipping! I was very impressed with the "what's included" link found in the email confirming my order was shipped. This link directed me to a list of items in the package, and included an electronic copy of the Zx3's User Manual. That was a very nice touch.

Appears to be a well built product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordering through Crutchfield was great as usual. I've only filmed a few simple video shots of the new baby, but it works great so far. The 720p setting (the one recommended for YouTube/Facebook looked great on our 46" LCD. The facial recognition found the baby's face right away...although I'm not too sure of the advantages of this yet. The camera is about the size of a Blackberry and feels solid in the hand. You can't go wrong with the versatility and ultra portibility of this device. I did purchase a Kodak 16GB memory card to go with it. Apparently, Kodak sells a small remote control, I wish Crutchfield offered it during the checkout process.

Outstanding!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for a trip to Hawaii, to supplement my digital SLR. I used it on our snorkel expeditions, beach trips and out in the rain... the video quality is amazing, and underwater performance was outstanding, as well as the audio quality while underwater. Very intuitive and easy to use interface as well. For the price, this is an amazing product!!!

Best Video Camera

This video camera is perfect. 1080 HD picture is incredible. The video underwater feature is really cool. It is durable and easy to use. Also its very portable to carry around with you. The best part for me is that I don't look like a tool taking video with a big bulky video camera. For the price this is a no brainer.
