The foundation of a simple, yet great-sounding stereo system

You don't need huge power or a lot of buttons to push. You don't need to spend a lot of money, either. If all you want is great sound for a small space, NAD has the solution. The C 316BEE is the perfect little integrated amp to anchor that high-quality audio system in your den, bedroom, or office. It delivers accurate, musical sound in a compact, easy-to-enjoy package.

NAD C 316BEE stereo integrated amplifier

The large toroidal transformer is a key to this affordable amp's amazingly clean, dynamic sound.

No frills, just thrills

NAD designed this amp using the same principle behind their higher-end components — a no-frills approach that puts the focus squarely on performance, instead of bells and whistles. It boasts a high-current toroidal transformer — usually found only on expensive audiophile gear - and other carefully selected parts to provide punchy, lifelike sound. It makes the amp sound much more potent than its 40-watts-per-channel rating would lead you to expect.

This integrated amp offers enough inputs to connect six audio components, plus a handy front-panel minijack for hooking up a portable music player. And the included remote gives you easy control of the amplifier and the other NAD audio components in your system.

Add a CD player like NAD's C 515BEE and good set of bookshelf speakers like the PSB Image B6. Turn off your TV and phone. Now relax and rediscover the simple pleasure of listening to great music.

Praise for the NAD C 316BEE from The Absolute Sound

"The entry-level C 316 is still the go-to amp for audiophile newbies who crave sonic neutrality, good power output, nice tactile feel, and NAD's characteristic quality-control."

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amplifier to use in a guitar practice studio. I have a mixer with guitar and mp3 player on one input to the amp, and a PS Audio DL3 DAC on another input. The NAD drives Polk Monitor 4's. I also use the headphone output to drive Sennheiser HD580 headphones. The NAD has plenty of power to drive both the speakers and the headphones to volumes way beyond what I would ever want. It is a very musical and dynamic sounding amplifier. Does it compare to my main stereo, which is $20k worth of reference tube electronics? Of course not. But I think for the price, the NAD is tough to beat, and it's a great bang for the buck. And for my purpose of learning and practicing guitar mixed with the music I'm learning, it's awesome. It allows me to play in the stereo mix over speakers, which is a different perspective from playing through headphones. In the couple of weeks that I've had the NAD, it's made me a better musician already because of this. And, it's fun!?? So, although my use for this amplifier is a little out of the ordinary, I really love it and I'm confident that I will keep it for the rest of my life. I look forward to hearing the amp after it's had a chance to break in. I also plan to use Kimber Hero IC's in this system. I'm sure that will make a dramatic improvement in the stereo imaging. Right now I don't think this amplifier is the weak link in my system, the ancient TMI IC's and the Polk speakers are.

Pros: Plenty of power for my needs. Nice headphone amp. Tone controls and tone control defeat switch. Lots of inputs. Good user interface. Seems to be solidly built. Nice speaker binding posts and rca inputs. Crutchfield shipped it promptly and provided great tracking information. I didn't need to use their customer service, but I'm confident that it's excellent.

Cons: Great bang for the buck amp. I can't think of any cons on the NAD, but here's a suggestion for Crutchfield. Can you give us more than three lines to write a review in? It's like trying to type through a keyhole!??

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My system of twenty -two years finally decided to lay down and die so I was faced with the sad duty of replacing it. I wanted something simple, elegant, and well made. NAD and Crutchfield delivered on every count. The unit itself ( along with the NAD C 516BEE CD player) is very impressive. Sleek and uncomplicated, it was like Christmas morning opening the box! After getting it wired up and plugged in, I popped in a CD and was very impressed with the clean, rich sound. I'm older now so I don't rock out as much as I used to but I decided to turn it up anyway. Amazing sound even at high volumes. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, bittersweet as it was. The staff at Crutchfield always comes through when it comes to customer service, and NAD definitely came through with a fine product I'm now happy to call my own.

Pros: Sturdy, well made construction. Simple impressive design.

Cons: None so far

Just got it!

This is an amazing little amplifier. I just got it in the mail today, and I am already so impressed. It must be underrated, it sounds more like 80W per channel. Very clean power delivery, sounds great with anything from Fleetwood Mac to Mozart!

Pros: Compact, simple layout

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Delivered as promised and in good working order. Purchased an open box and it seems as new. I enjoy NAD's house sound as well, so I am perhaps a bit biased. Great bass control.

Pros: It works as advertised. Ample power. Do not notice a power difference b/t this and my older 325bee. Classic NAD bass control, it's smooth and open.

Cons: Can't think of any really.

Love the sound of NAD

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even their least expensive integrated amp has a clean solid sound. I always disengage the tone controls because the NAD 316BEE paired with my PSB speakers sounds wonderful. Great tonal quality - nice tight bass, and clean crisp highs. The 45 watts/ch is more than enough to drive these speakers to my satisfaction. This is my second NAD Integrated amp in a little over 10 years.

Pros: Clean, simple design. Ample power and clean sound to fill an average size room.

Cons: None I can think of.....

Great integrated amp

Written By Alan, Tennessee on Thursday, April 09, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

See pros and cons below.

Pros: Enough power for my speaker, and plenty of inputs. Easy to setup and use, and appears well made.

Cons: When you plug-in the headphone jack output to the speakers is cut-off, so you can't power speakers and use headphones at the same time. Also the remote is small in size, which makes reading the labeling of the controls difficult.

Good entry point

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Do yourself a favor and buy this instead of the similarly priced NAD D3020. I tested both on the same source and speakers and while the C316 BEE was engaging, the D3020 left me cold. Earlier I had an Outlaw stereo receiver and while I did not compare head to head, my impression is that if you don't need a lot of power, this NAD is a good alternative at a lower price point. Compact and with pleasing sound, this NAD is a good starting point in "audiophile" sound. That is, you can listen to stereo music on it. Home theater receivers are good for 3D spatial movie effects but they reduce stereo music to mediocrity. If you want to listen to music, my travels suggest you can do better with this little NAD than with a home theater receiver at least 6x the price.

NAD C 316BEE Stereo integrated amplifier

Written By Architect, Austin, Texas on Saturday, February 28, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sold my aging Nakamichi System One a year ago with intent of moving up to current technology and to save some real estate. Read all of the NAD integrated reviews and took a chance on the NAD C 316BEE Stereo integrated amplifier. I was concerned with the 30 watt per channel rating. Received the unit and connected it to my NAD C515BEE CD player and a set of New Advent Loudspeakers (80's vintage that I have refurbished and with matching replacement upper drivers). Very nice sound, but had to drive amp at around 10 o'oclock position to begin to get full music range. Beautiful range and realism- forgot what a quality system was like. Perhaps my room size is a bit large for the amp. Ran it through the paces with selections by Mark Kopfler, The Beatles, Allison Krause, Robert Plant, David Gray, Pink Floyd and Yo-Yo Ma, Couple Zeppelin tunes did not work for me. Next step was to try my pair of Klipsch Forte and some classical on vinyl. Seemed at bit weak overall and had to boost the base and pull back on the treble- could use a loudness control for lower volume situations. I have now arranged to exchange the unit for the C326BEE. If 50 watts per channel at low volume levels does not work, will have to re-think the integrated map route and go back to an amp/pre-amp system. Thanks to Crutchfield working with me on the exchange.

Pros: Quite with no load, great separation of channels. Clean and flat reproduction. Nice design and finish.

Cons: Needs a built-in phono pre-amp, and loudness control. Four stars because I am waiting on the exchange.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 316BEE is first of all an elegant minimalist polished looking piece of equipment. Fortunately it's performance mirrors it's impressive exterior in every way. Silky solid volume and controls. No noise. Surprising power for it's rating. I've spent more than a little time admiring this lovely amplifier. And I love hearing it perform. There was a nice added bonus in purchasing the 316BEE: With my old amp in my system I had been thinking that my old Boston Acoustics A60s were sounding pretty bad and about ready for replacement. But then I connected them to the 316BEE .... they sound great. In short this purchase is the best money I've spent in a long time.

Pros: Simple. Elegant. Solid. Great performance.

Cons: Integrated power cord could have been just a little longer.

Solid Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Solid,no nonsense integrated amp. I upgraded my cd player and speaker wiring w/ Monster Cable products, then hooked up some Monitor Audio MR2s. I am very pleased with the sound! I am impressed with the clarity and volume that comes from this 'little engine that could'. I think some speaker break-in and a good equalizer will improve sound even more! Still, very happy with the NAD!

Pros: simplicity, clarity when 'pushed', value

Cons: tonal control

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Straightforward old school amp, no bells nor whistles, simply very good.

Pros: Works great, good sound with my Klipsch speakers, low noise level. No real complaints.

Cons: Would be nice if it had a phono stage. Non standard battery for remote.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fine, no nonsense product. It doesn't do much, but what it does it does well. I'm using it with a turntable and an Apple AirPort Express playing files from my computer upstairs. It sounds better to me than the 22 year old Onkyo receiver that it replaced-but some of the difference that I'm hearing could be attributed to the NAD phono preamp and the Schiit DAC that I purchased to go with it. All I know is that this amplifier, the preamp, and the DAC-together-are making for the most enjoyable stereo listening that I've ever experienced. But that's not saying much because I just haven't experienced many systems. I'm giving it 4 stars because I'm holding one in reserve in case I hear something better.

This amp with an internal phono preamp would be a better product for me. That's my only gripe.

Pros: Nicely sized Standby LED is an attractive orange

Cons: The remote control is a little finicky about line of sight, but it functions well

This is just what I was looking for to replace a 27 year old receiver. Not a lot of flashy, useless controls - just a well-built unit with great clean sound. I listen mostly to classical music or jazz and the NAD316BEE delivers detail I never heard before. Excellent Crutchfield customer service is a bonus.

Pros: Clean sound - well built.

Excellent Integrated Amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My decision to go with the NAD C 316BEE is probably the best decision I have made in buying an integrated amp, ever. Having no prior experience with NAD equipment other than a NAD phono preamp , it was surely a leap of faith and good luck I chose this amp. My listening room is a small bedroom converted for my music room and this amp was a perfect fit for filling my room with excellent sound from it's rated 40 watts (sure seems like it's driving more than 40 watts) . I am driving a pair of book shelf speakers that are rated @ 80 watts into 6 ohms. I noticed another reviewer stated that this amp only liked 8 ohm speakers. Not so!! Almost all of my cd's, from the oldest that I bought in the 80's to the newest hybrid and gold cd's sound unbelievably good. I bought a NAD PP2i preamp so I could hook up my old turntable and listen to my vinyl which also sounds really great with this amp. I have only turned the tone defeat off just to make sure that the treble and bass functions work. Leaving the tone defeat on still gives me the bass I desire and and the higher frequencies are crystal clear without having to adjust the treble or bass at all. What a terrific amp. You don't have to spend big dollars for excellent sound!!

Pros: Good build quality, great sound at an affordable price.

Cons: None that I can find.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a smallish but great sounding integrated with remote for my every day use. This one meets those needs and then some. I combined it with some super efficient full sized speakers for everything from Blue-Ray to Dish and my music server. Rocks the house, plays the soundtracks and re creates so much sound so well, could not be happier.

Pros: Remote is small and simple. The amp itself is slightly undersized compared to all the others out there and it sounds really clean and precise, it will produce exactly whatever it receives.

Cons: No mono switch, when redbox signal craps out one channel, that's all its missing!

Excellent no frills entry amp

Written By ChrisW, Maidens, VA on Thursday, March 20, 2014

Really delighted with this amp. Basic and no frills, but with an obvious emphasis on build quality inside and out. Just what I wanted.

Pros: Excellent musicality, plenty of power for small and medium rooms.

Cons: Requires the use of 8 ohm speakers, which restricts your selection, but only slightly as most are 8 ohm.

NAD Integrated Amp NAD C 316BEE

Written By Audio Journeyman, NY on Monday, February 03, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ive had and traded many integrated amps and I must say for the money I got everything I would ever need in this power house of a amp. The sound of my Theta Miles CD player going thru this amp was clear clean detailed and dynamic. Plenty of backup power punch when needed. What more could i ask for nothing nothing at all.

Pros: More power than the very humble 40 watt rating. Accurate Musicality. If you look at the inside of one and compare the build quality to other similarly priced models it over achieves.

Cons: none

NAD stuff has always been quality, no-nonsense products from the beginning. And the C316BEEE is no different. A superb 2-channel integrated amp, it is the perfect solution for a portable video suite setup. Robust beyond its 40W rating and clean, simple tone controls. Thankfully, high quality is still available in a simple package. I love it!

When I connected the NAD 316BEE to the 516BEEE Cd player and my trusty JBL L100T speakers I broke into a smile and thought "wow.". Each instrument was so clear and the voices so realistic! Previously I was using a Sony AV re iever and a Phillips DVD player for playing CDs. I also hap an ancient Kenwood KA 5500 integrated amp that used.

There are way too many 5's given out in these reviews. This product really is a 5

Pros: Price and performance. Simplicity of design

Cons: The remote feels a little cheap.

I dig this amp. Bought is as a replacement for an old JVC that gave out after 25 years of use. Just wanted something simple and clean sounding. Seems much more powerful than the 40 watts /channel rating. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is I wish it had a loudness contour switch to use as an option.

Pros: quality built clean sound good price

Cons: no loudness switch

Crisp and clean. A streamlined, some would say minimalist design. It is what you need (if you are after 2-channel) and nothing more. That is no unnecessary bells and whistles. The sound is what counts--if you have signal, it is accurate and uncolored. If there is no signal, there is absolute silence...and, in this case, silence is golden!

I love my NAD C 316 BEE Amp!

Written By chaka4, Edmonds, WA on Tuesday, July 09, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted top quality workmanship; with high quality sound for the small amount of money I had available to invest. I made the right choice.

I am not an audiophile; however, I know the difference between high sound quality and good sound quality when I hear it. The NAD C 316 BEE Amp delivers high quality sound. I have it paired with my NAD C515 BEE CD player and the distinction of different tones and sounds coming from even an ordinary CD and modest speakers are so impeccable it still amazes me.

Again, I'm not an audiophile, and I'm sure there are plenty of higher end pieces of equipment that cost more than 3 months' salary! However, if you are on a budget like me, yet still yearn to listen to your favorite music at its best, then this is the amp for you!

Note: I was able to hook my old Pioneer PL-990 pre-amp turntable into the Aux jack and it works great. No separate pre-amp necessary.

Superb option for fans of stereo sound.

Written By JV, Chicago on Wednesday, July 03, 2013

I've had this amplifier for quite awhile now and it has never let me down. Very good bang for your buck. I use it primarily for music, but also for watching movies sometimes. This amp has loads of volume on tap - see the picture above, the one with the volume turned up to about 1 o'clock.. I've never had the volume up that loud. Not even once. I've gotten up to about 12 o'clock and it's mind blowingly loud, yet crisp, musical and undistorted. I use this amp with an Onkyo C7030 cd player and a pair of Polk tsi300 floorstanding speakers. Very happy with this amp, no regrets.

Pros: Solid/dependable, tone defeat button, 6 inputs (plus 3.5mm input on front), nice remote, very loud/powerful, good value. Not a lot of bells and whistles - just very well built musical muscle for those of us who enjoy high quality stereo sound.

Cons: None.

NAD C 316BEE - a best buy

Written By RoyT, Gloucester, MA on Monday, May 20, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In a "former life" I was a so called "audiophile" owning products from esteemed sources such as Beveridge, Audio Note, CEC, First Sound, Transcendent Sound, SOTA, Graham, Koetsu, Von Schweikert, Audio Research, Maggies etc, etc. I purchased the NAD C 316BEE to mate with a NAD C 515BEE CD player for my office (driving an old Von Schweikert VR-1 pair). The bordering on rave reviews for the 316 (and the 316/515 combo) in the audio press are dead on. I have been particularly pleased at the high resolution and accuracy of "timbre" at low db listening levels, suitable for office environs. When cranked a bit (on weekends) these baseline good performance attributes remain constant. Performance way beyond my expectations. A real value. RoyT

Pros: See above - also, a very well though out control set up. Top notch construction - and details such as the extra thick face plate and ergonomically friendly speaker wire connections. And, oh yes, --the price.

Cons: At his price level, none that come to mind.

The NAD C 316BEE Rocks!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The NAD C 316BEE Rocks! I procured this amp to supplement my home audio system and to slave it to a preamp. I read one review somewhere that stated the bass control was useless - not at all! (I think that reviewer did not understand how to use the Tone Defeat button). I have recommended this amp highly to my friends - at 40 continuous watts it has plenty of power. It is worth every peeny and more that I paid for it.

Pros: Solid engineering and very powerful.

Cons: None - quite pleased with the product!

Cons: Lacks line out or LFE for subwoofer, but that can be mitigated by wiring sub in parallel so this is a minor issue

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a sweet, if slightly quaint, little amplifier. I bought it to replace a Denon which was too large to fit in my new living-room setup. In a side-by-side comparison using the same speakers, it sounded as good as the Denon. It's worked great so far, and I'm pretty happy with it, despite a few minor shortcomings/oddities.

Pros: This is one of the smallest multi-input amplifiers you'll find that has a remote control for input/volume selection. Its sound fidelity meets my needs.

Cons: It has no digital-optical input for natively-digital sources like CD or Airtunes - just traditional RCA inputs. The remote control cannot affect bass, treble, or balance. The remote control has separate "on" and "off" buttons for some reason.

I ordered 12 guage speaker cable with the banana adapters pre-made and they slide easily into the speaker wire receptacles in the back of the amplifier. Cons: Only drives a single pair of speakers. Front panel orange standby LED is annoying and bright blue runtime LEDs are too bright.

Pros: has all the connects average home user needs; controls are distortion-free; remote control works well

Cons: none detected

Didn't like it's sound

Written By James, Texas on Thursday, April 26, 2012

I was helping someone close to me with their speaker setup.Since the speakers were already bought the next step was getting a new integrated amp decided to give NAD a try to see if they would really do match perfectly with PSB speakers (which I had) like many say they do.If they did I was going to keep the NAD for myself and give them my other integrated amp which is only a few months old. It doesn't the highs and overall detail was very lacking compared to the other amp I had. And the bass was really weak almost non existent. The NAD has a lot of power though and can get the speakers really loud with very little turn of the knob. But the sound just wasn't right. Thanks to Crutchfield's amazing customer service I was able to return the amp no problem. I would consider looking into Cambridge Audio,Marantz, and or Yamaha integrated amps at the moment since this NAD to my ears is a dud. But always try out for yourself if you can.

Pros: Very powerful can get speakers loud, I like the looks of it.

Cons: Weak highs, lack of detail, weak bass.

The NAD C 316BEE is Working Great

Written By 2nd NAD, WA State on Sunday, April 22, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed another, smaller sound system and since I'm still using an NAD 7130 that I bought in the late 80s in the family system an NAD seemed like a no brainer. I ended up with a C 316BEE, an integrated amp that seemed like it would pair nicely with some Pioneer SP-BS41-LRs, and it does. Music sounds great, with decent range, more than enough loudness for me, nice detail, and the imaging works well with the TV too (I never understood why people need a 'center speaker' as with a decent stereo you have a soundstage that always has a 'center speaker'). I expect it to be still working as nicely in a quarter of a century as its older sibling.

Just what I wanted: a stereo receiver with good sound

Like my other NAD receiver, this one does exactly what I expect and provides good sound even through our old Bose Acoustimass (sp?) speakers. We use it with an Apple ipod dock.

Delivery was prompt and on time.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent amplifier, very clean sound. Enough power to drive medium sensitive speakers to very high levels in a small (130 sq-ft) room. It is my son's first "good" amplifier, he uses it with Pioneer SP BS41 speakers, his iPod and my old CD-player. Great economy combination.

Pros: Nice clean sound, without coloration or distortion. I'm not aware of a better integrated amplifier at this price point.

Cons: Large cross-coupling to unterminated input connectors. If you select an input source that has nothing connected to it, you can hear, at low levels, what is being played on other inputs. That suggests that there is also a coupling the other way around and that unterminated inputs could act as antennas contributing noise. After talking to NAD support, I choose to terminate unused inputs with RCA shorting plugs.

My music never sounded so good. Much better than my previous Harmon Kardon. Good price/great value.

Excellent for listening to music with two speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It really is a great integrated amp - perfect for a small room and a nice pair of speakers. I find the highs are very clear and the base is punchy coming from my B&W DM602s. I don't hear any harshness (I compare against my Adcom amp and preamp). I feel the sound from the B&Ws are even better on this NAD! I might have to upgrade my speakers now! My only caution to anyone looking at this unit, please note that there are no extra connections (subwoofer, surrounds) so I think the amp would work best with standard full range speakers.

Great sound, Great Value!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a nice follow up from NAD. I had not used their products in a number of years and needed a good amplifier w/o spending too much (for my home office). My first thought was to get a used 3020 from Ebay but researching product reviews to see what NAD had been cooking of late, it became clear that the C316BEE was a better option.

I was not disappointed! Great Sound, Great Value (and virtually no power usage in standby mode!)

Fantastic little amp!

Written By JS, Utah on Wednesday, June 01, 2011

I'm amazed by the clean, detailed sound produced by my B&W 686 speakers when powered by this little amplifier. The NAD drives the 686s to surprisingly loud volume levels as well, despite the 686s low 84db sensitivity and the 316BEEs modest rated power of 40 watts per channel. In fact, it plays far louder than I'll ever require in my apartment living room. The 316BEE is great little amplifier and a wonderful value!

Great Sound

Quick review of the NAD C316BEE

Written By Mr. Bill, South Texas on Thursday, January 27, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, the NAD C316BEE arrived today and as I type this I am listening to the Dave Grusin/Lee Ritenour's album - Harlequin .... one of by favorite Brazilian jazz albums. All I can say is the sound quality is stunning. Simply beautiful!

The source is the HM 801 with Flac Lossless files. For those unfamiliar with the HM 801, it is made by the company HiFiMan in China. It is a rather pricey MP3 player whose claim to fame is its excellent DAC. The headphones I'm listening through are Sennheiser's HD 600s.

Before buying the NAD, I tried the HD 600s with the HM 801 alone and the was not adequate to the task of powering the headphones. I considered purchasing a dedicated headphone amp but decided on the NAD because I reasoned it would be more versatile.

I am not using any equalization on either the NAD or the HM 801 and the base is very strong.

This unit is set up in my man cave (home office). At some point, I may add a CD player and some modest floor speakers. We'll see. Right now though, I am thrilled with the current setup.

Great Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just received my NAD 316BEE integrated amplifier. Yes, it's the low end of NAD but they didn't skimp on the warm, clean sound. Plenty of power for my family room of about 450 square feet and beyond when I want to crank it up. Just replaced an old receiver that finally gave out after 25 years and this sounds better. I am using two bookshelf speakers with this amp. I got great customer service from Wes and fast shipping with excellent tracking information all along the route. Thank you Crutchfield.

Nice Amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a low profile integrated amp in the bedroom to play XM, Squeezebox, & a wireless feed from my media server (Pandora, etc.). The remote had to control input selection/volume/power.

The NAD has a nice form factor, very good build quality, and the blue LEDs are subdued enough that I can leave the unit on all night and wake to music. Spec-wise 40 W/ch is a bit light for the 6Bs but I've cranked it up a number of times and have some power to spare. It's a robust 40W! The front panel media player socket is a nice feature for iPods, etc.

I could not have received the unit any faster so thumbs up for Crutchfield's super fast order processing and shipping.

I've been aware of NAD for many, many years but is the first NAD product I've owned and I'm very pleased with my choice. I recommend this product for those with modest power needs particularly if they want something with a nice, low-key appearance. Happy listening!
