Our take on the NAD C 356BEE

by Jim Richardson
NAD

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Your music wants to make your day

Go ahead. Give your music a chance to knock you out. Play it through the NAD C 356BEE.

NAD's PowerDriveT technology allows the C 356BEE to sound even more potent than you would expect from its rating of 80 watts x 2 channels. Like a turbo-charger, the PowerDrive circuitry senses the demands placed on the amp and pours on higher current when it's needed to reproduce peaks of musical energy.

With enough inputs to connect seven audio components and two pairs of speaker, the C 356BEE accommodates your arsenal of audio gear. The modular design even allows turntable owners to install an optional NAD PP375 phono input module for listening to vinyl. The included remote control gives you easy control of the amplifier and the other NAD audio components in your system.

Separate preamp input/line-level output jacks let you use the C 355BEE as an independent power amplifier (or as a preamp, in the unlikely event that the built-in wattage doesn't produce enough volume for you). If your main stereo speakers don't supply enough bass to disturb the peace, you can easily add a powered subwoofer.

NAD designed the C 356BEE to reduce energy consumption without sacrificing performance. It consumes just 0.5 watts in standby mode and includes a convenient all-off "vacation" switch.

Praise for the NAD C 356BEE from The Absolute Sound

"The 80Wpc C 356 BEE borrows technologies from NAD's Master Series M3 dual-mono integrated. Its tonal balance leans slightly to the darker side, bringing a bit of extra wood to strings and burnish to brass. The soundstage is large, with a good sense of air around instruments, and a nice sense of depth."

Features

NAD PowerDrive Circuit: The C 356BEE use NAD's proprietary PowerDrive amplifier technology that provides high dynamic power and low impedance drive capability. By adding a second high-voltage rail to the amp's well regulated high-current power supply, the amplifier can nearly double its continuous power on a short term dynamic power basis. This uniquely efficient power supply topology provides the real world benefits of high dynamic power that remains uncompromised by low impedance speakers.

FDP Specifications: NAD uses Full Disclosure Power (FDP), the most demanding criterion for performance measurement. FDP specifies distortion under the most extreme conditions of low impedance loads and frequency extremes, rather than the simple and easy 1kHz @ 8 ohms test quoted by many of other manufactures. NAD uses this stricter performance criterion because it more closely matches the demands of real music and real loudspeakers. Maintaining specified distortion at 4 ohms and at 20Hz to 20kHz is a much more difficult achievement. The NAD C 356BEE is rated at 80 watts x 2 channel (@ 20-20kHz, in 4/8-ohm, with 0.007% THD).

Soft Clipping: NAD's Soft Clipping circuit gently limits the output of the C 356BEE to minimize audible distortion when the amplifier is over-driven. While Soft Clipping can be left on at all times to reduce the likelihood of audible distortion from excessive volume settings, you can also turn the circuit off for critical listening if you prefer.

Modular Design Construction (MDC): Modular Design Construction (MDC) makes future upgrades possible with interchangeable, upgradeable modules.

Controls

Remote Control: The included IR remote control handles the key functions of the C 356BEE. The IR remote can also be used to directly command other NAD products that respond to applicable common remote control codes. This includes other NAD Stereo Receiver, Integrated Amplifier, and Preamplifier models. It has additional controls to remotely operate NAD CD Players, AM/FM Tuners, and dedicated AM/FM/DB Tuners. It will operate up to a distance of 23'. The remote requires two "AA" alkaline batteries (included).

Volume: The Volume control adjust the overall loudness of the signals being fed to t he loudspeakers or headphones. The Volume control does not affect recordings made using the Tape output terminals, but will affect the signal going to the Pre-amp output terminals (Pre Out 1 and Pre Out 2).

Balance: The Balance control adjusts the relative levels of the left and right speakers. The Balance control does not affect recordings made using the Tape output terminals, but will affect the signal going to the Pre-amp output terminals (Pre Out 1 and Pre Out 2).

Tone Controls: The C 356BEE stereo integrated amplifier features independent Bass (100Hz) & Treble (10kHz) controls to adjust the tonal balanced of your system. The Tone control does not affect recordings made using the Tape output terminals, but will affect the signal going to the Pre-amp output terminals (Pre Out 1 and Pre Out 2).

Note: The Tone control circuits can be bypassed.

Connections

Front-Panel Stereo Minijack: The NAD C 356BEE is equipped with a front-panel stereo minijack (3.5mm) to temporarily connect your portable digital audio player.

Analog Inputs: The NAD C 356BEE stereo integrated amplifier is fitted with 5 rear-panel analog stereo audio inputs (RCA). These inputs are labeled 'MP', 'CD', 'Tuner', 'Disc', and 'AUX'.

Tape Monitor Inputs/Outputs:  The NAD C 356BEE is equipped with two stereo Tape Monitor outputs (labeled 'Tape Monitor' and 'Tape 2') for recording purposes.

A-B Speaker Terminals: The NAD C 356BEE is fitted with A & B speaker outputs. You can choose to play back only the A speakers, only the B speakers, or both A-B speakers. The speaker terminals are binding-posts and will accept single banana plugs, pin connectors, or bare wire (16-12 AWG).

Note: The stereo integrated amp will support one pair of 4 to 8-ohm speakers or two pair of 8-ohm speakers.

Preamp Outputs: The C 356BEE features dual stereo pre-amp outputs (labeled 'Pre Out1' and 'Pre-Out 2') to connect the unit to an external power amplifier or power subwoofer.

Main Input: This is a stereo RCA connection which allows the connection of an external preamplifier or processor.

Headphone Output: The C 356BEE is fitted with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphones (sold separately). The headphone jack will work in parallel with the selected speakers (A and/or B). To listen to only your headphones, de-select Speakers A-B. The volume, tone, and balance controls are operative for headphone listening.

IR Input/Output: There is an IR input (3.5mm), used to control this unit using an optional infrared repeater or the IR output of another component. There is also an IR output (3.5mm) used to control another compatible component.

+12V Trigger Output: The +12V trigger output (3.5mm) lets you turn on/off another device along with the C 356BEE.

RS-232 Port: The rear-panel RS-232 port allows connection to a compatible PC or external whole-house control system from companies such as AMX or Crestron. NAD is a certified partner of AMX and Crestron and fully supports these external devices.

Switched AC Outlet: This convenient outlet can supply switched AC power to another component or accessory. The total draw off all devices connected to this outlet must not exceed 120 watts.

AC Power Cord: The C 356BEE comes supplied with a detachable 68" AC power cord.

Nothing Outstanding

Written By addman27, Fort Myers on Monday, March 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With all the hype surrounding this receiver I really thought I may be missing something with my Yamaha R-S 700. Despite all the rave reviews, the build quality of the NAD was rather cheap, (even the balance control knob was slightly off center. I subtracted a star for that). While The NAD was powerful, even with both the treble and bass significantly increased, it still sounded rather flat and dull. In short, the sound quality of the NAD was nothing special, and for the price the build quality was disappointing (cheap plastic speaker connectors on the back, plastic knobs on the front).

I'm sure the NAD sounds good for certain types of music, but for pop/rock and alternative it had simply no punch or slam. Don't believe all the hype. I sent mine back. For my old Vinyl and CD's my Yamaha wins hands down.
Pros:
Lots of power.
Cons:
Cheesy looks and fair build quality. Average sound at best.

Don't hesitate.

Written By Tony A., Bartlett, Illinois on Sunday, March 09, 2014

After running what I thought were excellent vintage / semi vintage components (Marantz receiver as preamp to Sony ES power amp) the new NAD C356BEE literally blew up my most optimistic estimation of what a new amplifier would do for my sound quality. Low, deep "appropriate" bass, clear and loud midrange and extended high frequency air and sparkle, along with dynamics that just will not quit, this amplifier is outstanding in every category. Vocals and instruments stand out and project loudly and clearly, there is zero compression or loss of distinction or clarity. Driving large tower speakers in a large finished basement, my ears said turn it down long before the amplifier showed any signs of strain or distortion. I never expected this one to be anywhere near this good. Amazing. Recommended as highly as any audio component I have ever owned except for the Pioneer DEX-P99RS mobile audio head unit.
Pros:
Bass Midrange Treble Dynamics Clarity
Cons:
Buttons a little difficult to read. Not your most stylish boutique amp but I wouldn't change it for anything the way it delivers sound quality.

Great sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome integrated amp. I bought this for my father who is really into classical music and he loves it. This was a replacement for a 20 year old B&K Amp and Adcom pre amp that was hooked up to a pair of PSB Silver model tower speakers. The NAD did not disappoint. Sound quality was outstanding. Highly recommend.
Pros:
Great system for under $1000

NAD C 356BEE

Written By Mark, Wisconsin on Monday, February 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice Integrated. Have only listened to it through some $250 Sennheisers. I liked the old style NAD's that showed you with the LED when you were getting into volumes that made the amp use the soft clipping. Now you can't tell if the volume you are listening to might be to much for the wattage rating on the amp.The LED only represents if the amp's soft clipping function is engage or not and is not made to change it's intensity when clipping.
Pros:
Have always respected the NAD Name I expect to get years of use from this Integrated. I have no other complaints.
Cons:
Just the lack of change in illumination for soft clipping LED

sounds good, but one big drawback

Written By spence, honolulu, hi on Tuesday, January 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always liked NAD products, and the 356BEE sounds good, but I was really surprised I had to buy a separate amp to hook up a turntable.
Pros:
NAD always seems to offer quality sound.
Cons:
No turntable hookup without another purchase. Nowhere in the owner's manual does it say where to plug in the sub.

Simpley Awesome

Written By Majog, NY on Tuesday, July 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off let me start with I was replacing a 25 year old medium end JVC receiver driving new Klipsch R7 speakers. I originally ordered the Marantz PM8004 that was $200 more. Due to a misunderstanding with the Crutchfield advisor the tape output is not a loop and would not drive my EQ or DBX. I called them up and before I even had the Maranze boxed and ready to send back the NAD was on the way. The NAD has a preamp out loop that allows it to drive my ancillary equipment. Even with just the NAD (no ancillaries in place) the sound was incredible and even better than the $200 more Marantz. It was enough features and is powerful enough to shake the walls at 1/2 power. The sound is crisp, clear, and amazing compared to the old JVC. Wish I would have upgraded much sooner. I also got a Nuforce Icon iDo DAC in place of the NAD DAC module that was about the same price. The NAD version does not allow you to drive IPAD or IPHONE devices. Will review that separately.
Pros:
Cost. A value based price; Amazing sound; Superb customer service; Simple to install and run.
Cons:
Integrated DAC module does not run I-devices; could drive the bass a bit harder

Impressive Upgrade!

Written By BudF, Rochester, NY on Saturday, April 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned various NAD products for many years. This amplifier replaced my NAD C160 preamp and C270 120W power amp mainly due to space considerations. What a significant upgrade! This is a heavy and very well made product that clearly outperforms my more expensive much older components. The sound stage is wider with more air between instruments. Localization of instruments is much clearer. Definition is also significantly clearer with much more detail and texture to instruments, with far greater and more pronounced spatial quality such as heard in reverb and delay on recordings. The dynamic punch and speed of transients are so much better than my older components. The bass response is bigger but natural, with much better midrange. The treble range is better too but still with that wonderful NAD lack of edge and over brightness. Powered subwoofers can easily be used with this amp. This amp is a joy to listen to and worth every dollar. If you want a phono input for a turntable, buy the version with the phono input module that installs easily into the rear of the amplifier.
Pros:
Impressive sound quality and listenability. Music is just better! Appearance, size, and blue lights for each input selector button. Very nice remote that can be used for all NAD components, including Blu Ray and CD players.
Cons:
The amp seems to run cooler than many but the top needs good ventilation space. Be careful when stacking components on the amp.

Didn't think I'd be this Impressived

Written By John C, Providence, RI on Friday, February 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been an audiophile all of my life. I couldn't be happier having purchased this amp. Of course, the speakers are as important as the amp and connecting several sets of speakers to it, I was pleased with the clarity and lack of distortion that I heard. From my top of the line Paradism speakers to an old set of Pioneer 99A (40+years old) speakers, the sound is phenomenal.
Pros:
Powerful enough to drive my speakers, with low distortion.
Cons:
You can't hook up a sub-woofer, but my 99A Pioneers have 15" woofers so I'm OK without it. However, this could be a real issue for most other speakers.

My first NAD

Written By Sredman1, Fredericksburg, Va. on Monday, November 21, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I connected my high-end floor standing speakers and turntable to my new C 356bee and was blown away. Before this I was listening to vinyl through my Denon 7.1 with Yamaha bookshelf speakers and a Velodyne sub, which was okay but lacking. Then came the NAD and the music came to life, the instruments spoke individually and came together to create music in a way I hadn't previously heard. The sound is clean, detailed, and crisp. I once again have discovered the beauty of vinyl. Once I get a CD player the system will be complete. I would totally recommend the NAD C 356BEE to anyone whether as an entry level amp or as a replacement for the enthusiast.....neither will be disappointed.
Pros:
It has made my music come to life. The price is right
Cons:
Nothing so far.

I connected my NAD amp to Studio Monitor speakers (with Eminence 12" bass) and it packs plenty of power to get the job done. It reproduces the most subtle nuances with incredible clarity: it's truly a whole different listening experience. If you're looking for the best at a reasonable price, look no further than NAD.
