Our take on the NAD C 426

by David Brown
NAD

See what you're hearing

Add AM/FM broadcast capabilities to your home stereo system with the NAD C 426 tuner. With 30 presets and a sophisticated low-noise design, stations will come in clearly across the dial. Want to know what song is playing? The C 426 displays Radio Data System information, so you can see what station, artist, and song you're listening to (available with select FM stations).

While it comes with a remote, there are inputs for use with external controllers and universal remotes, so it easily integrates with your home system. Naturally, it goes great with NAD's highly-regarded integrated amplifiers.

Features

RDS: The RDS limits itself to the RDS PS (Program Service) and RT (Radio Text) function, both of which enhance ease of operation. The RDS PS will automatically indicate the name of the radio station you are listening to in the display. At the touch of a button, RDS RT will display additional information broadcast by the radio station, such as the presenter, the music playing, etc.

Fine Tuning: With each brief rotation of the C 426's front-panel rotary dial, the tuner will take 0.05 MHz steps for the FM band and 10 kHz for the AM band. You can also use the remote's numeric keypad to directly enter a station's identification number. Auto Search automatically stops at the next strong radio signal and optimizes tuning. Weaker radio stations can be tuned into manually. Stations that are quiet in Mono, but noisy in Stereo can benefit from the "Blend" feature that narrows stereo separation and improves noise. FM Mute eliminates inter-station tuning noise and only allows strong and clear stations to emerge from the silent background.

30 Presets (w/ Naming): With 30 presets available, you can store all your favorite radio stations in any combination of AM and FM stations. To avoid having to scroll through 30 presets, the un-programmed (empty) ones are skipped to give you quick access to all your stations. For AM and non-RDS stations the C 426 FM/AM Tuner allows you to name each preset individually with up to eight characters. Once you have named your presets you don't need to remember which frequency goes with what radio station, as the name is indicated in the display every time the preset is recalled. All the preset information is stored in the C 426's non-volatile memory, which means it will remember all of its preset information even if the unit has been unplugged for a prolonged period.

Connections: The NAD C 426 tuner features a threaded F-type connector to connect the included FM wire antenna, and two spring-clip terminals to connect the included AM loop antenna (you can upgrade antennas).  The NAD C 426 is fitted with a set of stereo RCA outputs and comes with a 38" audio cable to connect the tuner to your AV receiver. The rear panel IR input (3.5mm), +12V Trigger input (3.5mm), and RS-232 port allow the C 426 to be easily integrated with sophisticated system controllers used in custom installation. The tuner also comes with a detachable 6.5' AC power cord.

Simple Operation: Instead of littering the front panel with seldom-used buttons and features, the C 426 concentrates on the essentials. It features an intuitive user interface with a 24-position rotary encoder knob to quickly tune stations or select preset stations. The included IR remote provides wireless operation of the tuner.

VFD: The C 426 features a Vacuum Fluorescent Display which provides visual information on the settings, conditions, status, and other information relevant to the currently tuned station. The display offer three brightness settings.

Sleep Mode: The tuner's Sleep Mode timer will switch the C 426 to "standby mode" automatically after a preset number of minutes (30, 60, 90, or Off).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

No bells and whistles. Excellent at what it is intended to do. Currently using it with the included FM antenna. It needs to be adjusted occasionaly for the best reception. Using it with an Anthem 225 integrated amp. Great product.
Pros:
Sound quality
Cons:
Included antenna could be better at this price.

I am most dissapointed that this Tuner DOES NOT live up to the NAD NAM

Written By Hale, Atlanta Georgia on Tuesday, November 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I normally do not give negative reviews but the positive reviews for this product need to be balanced .This is the first out of many products I have purchased from Crutchfield that I have been disappointed with. When I purchased this item it was back ordered and I received phone calls and e mails from the Crutchfield staff ,which where most helpful and I want to say the Crutchfield service is just great . I purchased this item based on its name and the positive reviews . First of all the manual states the remote has a 30 degree operating range . At best it is 20 degrees . That is important in my needs . The radio reception is very substandard . Only when I experimented with a outside antenna did I begin to get the radio stations well on the other side of town . You cannot tune the radio in the stereo mode with out putting it on a mute mode , which in effect causes you to miss the faint station . It has a function on the remote called BLEND , which in some way alters the signal , trying to compensate for the sub par reception and decreases the static , even on strong stations . It is when compared with the Yamaha T-S500 or the SONY XDR-F1HD that you begin to see just how less in quality the NAD tuner is .The NAD sounds like it has been muffled ,however the stereo separation of the NAD is good , and the bass seems enhanced . It simply does not live up to what I would expect from a company like NAD . I would not re purchase this product . Buy the Yamaha
Pros:
You can direct tune with the remote . With some tuning and a good antenna the AM radio may be usable . The display is good for station information ect , which is one of the reasons I purchased the turner . It has a very good sleep mode ect . It should probably be used for sports talk or news talk radio though verses music . The bass response for a FM radio seems to be a little better than average .The steel case is good I could write more comments but ran out of character room , ie like Twitter
Cons:
VERY poor reception , even with a indoor amplified antenna . I would need a outside antenna to use it I live10 miles outside the perimeter of Atlanta , north Atlanta stations are difficult to pull in . The other tuners have no difficulty in this area . It simply does not measure up to the Yamaha model when listening to music .I would purchase the Yamaha model , but you need to buy it's remote from a remote web site. Yamaha does not come with its own remote . The Yamaha is FAR superior

Fantastic reception

Written By Larry, St. Petersburg, Fl on Monday, June 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I know most people probably don't listen to FM these days, but my wife and I listen to FM around the house a lot in the background as a way to stay current on music. I previously had bought an all in one receiver from Crutchfield. the sound was ok as was the FM reception. I eventually replaced it with an NAD 426 integrated and this tuner and am very satisfied. All the channels we listen to, are locked in (using the supplied antenna) and the sound is excellent.
Pros:
Sound quality, great reception, displays rds information for channels that offer it
Cons:
no digital broadcasts

NAD C426 AM/FM tuner

Written By MDA, South West Michigan on Friday, June 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just upgraded my amp to a new NAD from an old 7020e. I soon became aware that I missed the tuner for my local NPR stations which I listen to for News, talk and music. I considered going on EBAY for a vintage NAD tuner and looked at those but found a mint vintage tuner was not cheap and no guarantee of happiness. I am very happy with my tuner it matches my amp and sounds beautiful on the music shows. \
Pros:
Looks great, sounds terrific and if it lasts as long as my 7020e ( which still works) , it might outlive me.
Cons:
AM-FM is old technology, lots of new formats available and this was a bit pricey.
