About the NAD Masters Series M27

David Brown

No-compromise home theater sound

Why get a separate preamp and power amp instead of a home theater receiver? Because you simply can't fit this much amp into a receiver. The Masters Series M27 is the most powerful amp NAD has built to date, offering 180 watts per channel with virtually no distortion. That power rating, like all of NAD's power specs, is a bit conservative. And it was measured driving all seven of this amp's channels. That is some serious power. Good luck finding a receiver that can match that output and sound transparent doing it.

NAD Masters Series M17 and M27 preamp/processor and seven-channel power amplifier

Together with the M17 preamp/processor (sold separately), the seven-channel M27 power amplifier forms an incredibly dynamic and powerful home theater system.

Hybrid digital design

The M27 employs the latest state-of-the-art Class D technology. It's come a long way over the years, and the M27 represents the pinnacle of Class D performance. It employs nCore®'s revolutionary amplification, with a hybrid analog/digital design that uses negative feedback to cancel out virtually all audible distortion. This allows the M27 to deliver clean, detailed sound with the spacious soundstage that audiophiles crave.

Thunderous sound for movies

Movie soundtracks are not static. They ebb and flow, with quiet passages suddenly erupting with loud sound effects. A great amp brings movies to life by reproducing these dynamic changes accurately. That's a direct result of NAD's PowerDrive™ technology. It can sense the average output power required for your speakers, reserving powerful bursts for demanding scenes or music passages. This ensures it can handle a wide variety of speakers and offer superb accuracy and fluidity, so movies and music sound more lifelike. Worried that those loud movie sound effects could damage your speakers? NAD's SoftClipping™ will protect them by limiting the amp's output before speaker-damaging distortion takes its toll.

Smaller than you might expect

With so much power at its fingertips, you might expect the M27 to be massive. But it's relatively sleek compared to similarly rated amps. Class D amplification allows for a more compact chassis, so you won't need a wheelbarrow to get it in your house. The digital output stage also means it won't run hot, offering placement flexibility without making ventilation your only priority. The M27's styling is designed to match the NAD Masters Series M17 preamp/processor, for a seven-channel home theater system that will astound you with its power and grace.

Product Research

Features

Seven Channel Power Amplifier: The NAD M27 seven channel power amplifier can effortlessly create a truly realistic surround sound experience when mated to NAD's M17 Surround Sound Preamp Processor (745M17, sold separately). Rated at 180W continuous power per channel, the M27 will provide over 300W dynamic power per channel with all channels driven. The M27 will pump out all the power you  need into difficult loads to follow the complex dynamic peaks in your movies and music. The M27 has power reserves to meet the demands of the latest high-resolution digital soundtracks. Thanks to the advanced nCore amplifier technology, all this monster power comes at a lot less cost than traditional technology and delivers more power and performance.

Hybrid Digital Amplification: The NAD M27 seven channel power amplifier is using the latest nCore amplifier technology licensed from Hypex which offers distortion below measurement, ultra-high damping factor, and unconditional stability with any speaker. The result is tight, detailed sound with amazing control and transparency. With nCore, Hypex has refined their amplifier concept to new levels of perfection by improving the modulator for more accurate feedback subtraction and PWM generation. The all-discrete driver and output stage have also been improved for lower open-loop THD as well as lower idling losses, normally conflicting requirements with conventional IC driver circuitry. An added control loop incorporating an integrator with adaptive clipping enables 20dB more feedback to be used across the audio band because of its extremely low-phase shift resulting in a dramatic reduction in distortion across the audio band. This is added to nCore's already amazing characteristics of load invariance and high current capability, common characteristics of great-sounding amplifiers.

NAD PowerDrive: NAD's PowerDrive circuit delivers very high dynamic power and low impedance drive to accurately control loudspeakers, resulting in remarkably musical and relaxed sound. PowerDrive gives the M27 maximum power no matter what you throw at it; and without the energy drain. NAD's PowerDrive technology measures each channel's dynamic impedance individually and computes the optimum power supply voltage required to drive the output stage for maximum power and efficiency. Control for PowerDrive is derived by sensing the average output power, applying a time constant, and then cleanly hard clipping the signal thus limiting it to the rated continuous clipping power over a sustained loading.

SoftClipping: NAD's exclusive SoftClipping feature is also included to protect your speakers (and ears) from damaging clipping distortion. NAD's Soft Clipping circuit gently limits the output of the M25 to minimize audible distortion when the amplifier is over-driven. Each channel is individually protected and has its own front panel LED, which turns red when the circuit engages. While Soft Clipping can be left on at all times to reduce the likelihood of audible distortion from excessive volume settings, you can also turn the circuit off for critical listening if you prefer.

Balanced & Unbalanced Connectivity: The M27 can accept both balanced (XLR) and single-ended (RCA) inputs. It also features high-quality, gold-plated, color-coded binding posts for speaker connection. These binding posts will accept bare wire (16-10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Q
can this drive 4 ohm speakers?

A
Yes. The NAD M27 is rated for 8 ohm and 4 ohm. It also claims to run down to 2 ohm. I am driving KEF LS50 for LCR which are rated for 8 ohm nominal with 3.2 ohm minimum. Also, I am driving a pair of 4 ohm passive subs. The subs do not appear to go below 4 ohm.
