About the NAD PP 2e

Dave Bar

Breathe new life into your vinyl collection

A lot of receivers and amplifiers these days lack the phonograph input you need to hook up your turntable. And when manufacturers do include one, they sometimes use low-cost, low-performance circuitry that yields thin, lifeless results. NAD's PP 2e phono preamp takes advantage of high-quality, close-tolerance parts and a clean, simple design to give you the warm, richly detailed sound that vinyl is famous for.

It includes an external power supply that helps keep noise and interference away from sensitive electronics. And NAD gave the PP 2e an automatic standby function, which allows it to turn off when no signal is received, to help reduce energy consumption.

This preamp offers inputs for both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, to ensure proper matching with virtually any turntable and cartridge combination.

Features

MM/MC Phono Stage: The NAD PP-2e phono preamplifier accepts inputs from either moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) cartridges.

RIAA EQ: The built-in passive equalizer curve follows the RIAA standard within +/- 0.3 dB.

RCA Inputs: On the rear panel there are separate RCA inputs for MM and MC, and a switch to choose which you are using.

RCA Output: A rear panel stereo RCA output is used for connecting the phono preamp to your home stereo receiver.

Ground: A post on the rear panel provides easy grounding for your turntable.

External Power Supply: The NAD PP-2e operates off of standard household current (120V AC, 60Hz) using the supplied AC power adapter (23.5V DC, 60mA). The external power adapter is separate from the phono preamp to further improve sound quality.

Q
How would I connect this to a Marantz NR-1200 ? This receiver has a phono input but it is not very powerful (low volume output).

A
Connect the NAD phono preamp to one of the other RCA inputs on the Marantz instead of the phono input.

If I recall correctly the PP4 is the correct model for that purpose.

No, you will need an analog to digital converter to connect to a PC.

how do I connect a pre amp such as an NAD to an Onkyo TX NR 535?

I connected my NAD Phono Preamp to an "open" port on my amp. In my case I was not using the DVD port on my amplifier, so I connected the NAD to my DVD (analog) port. It works fine with my Pioneer turntable as long as I remember to turn on/power-up the NAD by pushing the "on" button when I want to use my turntable. Hope this helps..
steven  Feb 15, 2016

you should be able to plug it in to any of your (AUDIO IN) and this should work. Red into red white into white. And your turntable should be ready to go.
tammara  Feb 15, 2016

connect it to any unused line in sockets with an rca jack

as far as I know it is for turntable use - the only instructions for this unit only show the guide for attaching to a turntable and then to the receiver - you could always try the manufacturer but I am pretty sure that this is used only for turntables.
albert j  Feb 21, 2015
A
No. This particular unit is just a phono preamp.
david  Feb 20, 2015

With the right adapters perhaps. What kind of stylus do you have on your iPad?
donald  Feb 19, 2015
A
You can, but it is not needed. Typically it is used for connecting turn tables to an amp.
james  Feb 19, 2015
A
I don't think so Jared....it just boosts the signal from a turntable.

Q
Can you tell the difference using this with a turntable as opposed to not using a preamp? Thanks!

If your amplifier doesn't have a Phono in, you won't be able to use a Turntable at all, unless it has a built in preamp. The low signal output by a Turntable cartridge is too low to work at line in without a preamp. Even if your amp already has a Phono input, a separate preamp usually improves things quite a bit. Just be sure to hook your separate preamp to a line in, and not Phono in on your amp.
david  Feb 20, 2015
A
If your amplifier does not have a phono stage, then a phono pre amp is essential as you cannot play a turntable through any of the other line inputs. If you have a standard quality amp with a phono stage it is likely that a separate phono pre amp will be an improvement.

I have a Pioneer turntable from the 80's that needed the preamp to work with my updated amp. I believe "newer" turntables have the preamp built-into them or are wired to work with a normal connection on your amp. Maybe the manufacturer could answer your question.
steven  Aug 28, 2014

I use this with an integrated amp that doesn't have a phono input and it works great. Not sure if PP 2e has a built- in preamp.

The answer to your question is yes. I have a Onkyo receiver with a phono stage, It sounds ok, But once I used the NAD preamp it sounds awesome ! As long as you have a decent turntable and a good cart! My personal set up is a technics sl 1200 mk 2 with a dennon dl 110 cart. This set up sounds wonderful. The sound is night and day. It is the best money I have spent on stereo equipment as of late. The great thing about this preamp is you can run 2 turntables through it. You can use moving magnet cart or moving coil cart. For the money it's the best preamp on the market!

Hi Steve, My amplifier didn't have a dedicated Phono input (as quite a few amps these days don't) so I needed a Phono Preamp to be able to run a turntable with my Amp (through the AUX input, etc.). I will say that i had previously tried some really cheap Phono Preamps and can say that the sound and build quality of this NAD Preamp is far superior and a good value for the money.
geoffrey  Aug 28, 2014

Actually not sure yet! I had to buy this as the amp I was using didn't cater for a turntable direct. When this amp didn't work out, the new one (a Yamaha) had the turntable inputs, but I could not be bothered to change the device and go direct. It sounds great as it is , but I shall compare the difference this weekend if you can wait for an answer that long! Andy

Steve: I purchased this item and then returned it. I had an old Tandberg 2045 Stereo receiver that had a phone in connection. I bought this thinking it might improve the quality of the sound but I was wrong. It produced static noise wether I used the MM or MC connection. Granted, the Tandberg already had a phone in connection so this may have interferred with the actual operation of the NAD PP2e so not sure if this really answers your question. If your current device does not have a phone in, then this could work very nicely. Hope this helps.
