About the NAD PP 2i

Dave Bar

Bring your vinyl collection to life

A lot of receivers and amplifiers these days lack the phonograph input you need to hook up your turntable. And when manufacturers do include one, they sometimes use low-cost, low-performance circuitry that yields thin, lifeless results.  NAD's clean, simple PP 2i phono preamp takes advantage of high-quality, close-tolerance parts to give you the warm, richly detailed sound that vinyl is famous for, at a bargain price. It includes a newly designed external power supply that helps keep noise and interference away from sensitive electronics while also reducing energy consumption.

This preamp offers inputs for both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, to ensure proper matching with virtually any turntable and cartridge combination.

Product highlights:

  • compatible with moving magnet and moving coil phono cartridges
  • high-efficiency external power supply for reduced noise, interference, and power consumption
  • gold-plated input and output jacks for solid, corrosion-free connections
  • LED power indicator
  • signal-to-noise ratio: 80dB (MM), 78dB (MC)
  • rated distortion (THD 20-20,000 Hz): 0.03%
  • RIAA response accuracy: +/- 0.3dB
  • 5-3/8"W x 1-7/8"H x 3-9/16"D
  • warranty: 2 years
  • MFR # PP2i

What's in the box:

  • Phono preamplifier
  • AC power adapter (with attached 6' DC cord)

Q
how do i hook this up to a receiver (which receiver input do i use)?

Works fine using any of the Auxiliary Inputs.

bob: you can use just about any of receiver's "line level inputs." Simplest would be the an input usually labeled "AUX." You can also use a CD or video input, as long as they have two RCA type input jacks. Look for a white and a red color coded input jack -- the video input may also have a yellow colored input jack, but that is for the video signal, so ignore that. The RCA phono plugs from your turntable go into the input jacksof the NAD, either for a moving coil (MC) or moving magnet (MM) type cartridge -- don't forget to set the little slide switch on the back to either MM or MC. The ground wire from the turntable (if it has one) goes under the ground thumb screw. Then connect your cable from the phono preamp to one of the unused line level inputs on your receiver and you should be ready to spin some vinyl.

I used the "aux" inputs on my NAD receiver.

As this is a powered preamp I found that I could connect it to any RCA connection on the receiver. If your receiver has a Phono RCA go for that. If not any RCA will do.

Bob, These are designed to put an analog source (Turntable) into a digital only receiver or pre amp. Your turntable's analog signal goes in one side of the box and comes out the other side of the box, converted to digital. A / D So now you can plug it into any input on your receiver that expects a digital input. Any RCA input will do. So Aux 1, 2, or 3 CD, MP, etc.

If your receiver has assignable analog inputs you can assign to any input - if not you will probably have some sort of aux analog input which can be used as well.
