Our take on the NAD T 567

by Marshall Chase
NAD

Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

When you sit down to watch a new movie on Blu-ray, you want to relax and enjoy the best possible picture with enveloping 7.1-channel surround sound. The T 567 delivers the flawless picture you expect from the latest Blu-ray players, but superior sound quality is what sets this player apart from all those inexpensive, lightweight models.

Blu-ray front

Great build quality

NAD has a decades-long reputation for building no-nonsense, high-performance components. Now you can enjoy renowned NAD quality in a Blu-ray player. The player reflects NAD's core philosophy of simplicity, clean lines and a straightforward user interface.

The gorgeous high-def picture is just the beginning

The T 567 delivers a stunning "Full HD" Blu-ray picture to your HDTV. Even regular DVDs get a boost from NAD's upscaling engine, for a cleaner-looking picture with your standard-definition movies. Enjoy BonusView features like picture-in-picture director's commentaries. Or use the built-in Wi-Fi® to connect to your home wireless network, and enjoy interactive "BD-Live" extras like games, chat, and downloadable movie trailers. The T 567 has internal memory or you can plug a thumb drive into the USB port to store downloaded content.

NAD brings movie soundtracks to life

Experience the full, rich sound of Dolby® TrueHD or DTS-HD™ Master Audio 7.1 with this player and your home theater system. The T 567 can decode these high-resolution audio formats internally, or send an undecoded audio "bitstream" over HDMI for your A/V receiver to decode.

Your USB port of call

This player's front-panel USB lets you record hours of your favorite music from CD to your thumb drive for enjoyment at home or on the go. And playback lets you take full advantage of the T 567's superior performance with your digital music library.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The NAD T567 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD, BD-3D, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW

Note: This unit uses the NTSC system; BD or DVD discs you play back must be recorded for NTSC. You cannot play back BD or DVD disc recorded in other color systems.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The NAD T 567 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. Occasionally, NAD may release updated firmware for this unit that may add or improve the way a feature operates. These updates are available free of charge. This unit is capable of checking the firmware automatically when connected to the Internet via broadband connection.

Note: The tested NAD T 567 Blu-ray player contained firmware version BD.8.62.320 (as of 1/12/2012). Visit the NAD website for the latest firmware/software updates.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video format used to record high definition or standard definition video, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital camcorder and recorded on DVD disc to be played back on the T 567. The player supports AVCHD playback from DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs.

Still-Image Playback: The T 567 will also playback JPEG, GIF, and PNG still image files written to a BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, or CD-R/RW disc. The total number of files and folders should not exceed 2,000.

DivX HD File Playback: The T 567 supports playback of DivX HD video files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. This unit supports DivX HD image sizes up to 1920 x 1080 and up to 2,000 files/folders.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The T 567 can play MP3/WMA/AAC music files recorded on to BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. This unit will support up to 2,000 MP3/WMA/AAC music files/folders per disc.

Video Features

12-Bit/148MHz Video DAC: he NAD T 567 Blu-ray disc player employs a 12-bit/148MHz video DAC for high-quality, high-definition video.

Video Outputs: The NAD T 567 Blu-ray disc player is fitted with two video outputs; HDMI & Component.

  • HDMI Output: The NAD T 567 features a single HDMI output for HD video and audio signal transmission. The HDMI output supports 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 1080p/24 resolutions. Standard definition DVD signals (480p) are scaled and output at the specified resolution via HDMI.
  • Component Video Output: The T 567 features one component video output, capable of 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i output for unprotected media. The component video output only supports 480i/480p for protected media. Standard definition DVD signals (480p) cannot be scaled to 720p or 1080i and output via component video.

Note: This Blu-ray player does not contain a composite video or S-video output.

1080/24p Output: The T 567 includes a 1080/24p HDMI output to faithfully reproduce film images recorded on a Blu-ray disc. When connected to a 1080/24p display, you can enjoy remarkable video performance of Blu-ray which brings out the full character of film material.

HDMI Upscaling: The 480p resolution of a standard DVD can be scaled to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p and output via the HDMI jack. The player's component video output jack does not support upscaling.

3D-Ready: The NAD T 567 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p.

Note: 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

xvYCC: xvYCC color space reproduces a greater range of color than before, showing almost all of the colors that the human eye can detect.

Deep Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors. This results in much greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables many times more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.

TV Aspect: Set the aspect ratio to match the connected television:

  • 16:9 Original: a 4:3 signal is displayed in its original form on a 16:9 TV with black bars on the sides
  • 16:9 Full: a 4:3 signal is linearly stretched to fill the 16:9 screen
  • 4:3 Letter Box: a 16:9 signal is displayed in its original form on a 4:3 TV with black bars on the top and bottom
  • 4:3 Pan&Scan: the 16:9 signal fills a 4:3 screen, automatically shifting horizontally with the action; the portion of the picture that doesn't fit isn't displayed

Last Scene Memory: This function allows you to resume playback from the point at which the last video disc was stopped, even if the power to unit is turned off or the disc is removed. Last Scene Memory function for a previous disc is erased once a different disc is played.

Picture Mode: Various settings can be manually adjusted in the Picture Mode - Contrast, Brightness, Color, Sharpness, and Noise Reduction.

Zoom: During playback (or pause) the picture can be enlarged using the Zoom feature; the enlarged window is moved using the cursor buttons.

Audio Features

Digital Audio Formats: The Blu-ray player's HDMI output is capable of multi-channel bitstream (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, Dolby Digital, and DTS) and multi-channel LPCM output. The optical and coaxial digital outputs pass either Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, or 2-channel PCM. The T 567 can also decode the digital soundtrack internally (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, Dolby Digital, or DTS) and pass it as a multi-channel PCM signal through the HDMI output.

DTS NEO:6: DTS NEO:6 lets you enjoy multi-channel surround sound with a 2-channel audio source. This option is applicable only if the T 567 is connect to a multi-channel audio receiver via HDMI. You can choose either a Music or Cinema mode.

Dynamic Range Control: You can activate the Dynamic Range Control (DRC) function to compress the dynamic range of the audio output, useful when watching a DVD or BD at night when you don't want to disturb anyone else in the house. DRC can only be used with a disc recorded in Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus.

Digital Audio Outputs: This unit features one optical (toslink) and one coaxial (RCA) digital output. These can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder, or other component with a digital input. Depending on the source and setting, the output will be Dolby Digital, DTS, or 2-channel PCM.

Note: This Blu-ray player does not have analog stereo (RCA) audio outputs.

USB/Internet Functions

USB Direct Playback & Recording: The front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to play music, photo, and video files on a connected USB flash drive formatted in FAT32/FAT16. The unit will recognize a maximum of 2,000 total files/folders per USB device. You can also record directly from an inserted CD-audio disc onto a connected USB thumbdrive. You can record a single music track or all music tracks of the disc. You can also select the bit-rate of the recording; 128kbps, 192kbps, 320kbps, or Lossless. Approximate recording time of a 4-minute audio track to a USB device is 1.4 to 2 minutes.

Note: If a USB extension cable or USB Hub is used, your USB device may not be recognized. Computers, digital cameras, and mobile phones are not supported.

USB Port (Type-A): The front-panel USB port allows you to play music and photo files on a connected USB flash drive and enjoy additional content (BonusView/BD-Live) on certain Blue-ray Disc titles. Some BD-ROMs have bonus content and other data which can be downloaded to an inserted USB Flash Drive (minimum 1 GB required, sold separately).

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: Use the unit's rear-panel Ethernet port (10BASE-T/100BASE-TX) or built-in WiFi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n; 5 & 2.4GHZ) to connect to your home network so you can enjoy BonusView, BD-Live, and DLNA content.

DLNA (v1.5) Certified: The NAD T 567 is a DLNA Certified digital media player that can display and play movie, photo, and music content from your DNA Certified network device, such as a PC with Windows 7 installed. The necessary 1GB memory is built-in; more memory can be added via the front panel USB port.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

BD-Live Ready: BD-Live is a collection of online interactive features that content providers can include with a Blu-ray Disc movie to enhance your enjoyment of that movie. BD-Live includes access to studio-specified Internet sites that can provide the ability to download current movie trailers or other exclusive content, play movie related games, enhance the content of the disc, chat with other viewers, play games with other BD-Live connected players, etc. The specific BD-Live features offered vary by Blu-ray title. The necessary 1GB memory is built-in; more memory can be added via the front panel USB port.

Convenience Features

Vibration Absorbing Feet: The NAD T 567 features a sturdy full size steel chassis with special vibration absorbing feet to eliminate resonance that may lead unwanted distortion.

Drop Down Front-Panel: The player's drop down front-panel exposes the disc-tray and a full array of controls while keeping an uncluttered look.

Start Up/Play Back Time: The NAD T 567 Blu-ray player has a start-up time of approximately 20.9 seconds. It takes approximately 34.7 seconds for a Blu-ray disc to begin playback.

Note: The Start Up/Play Back Time tests were started with the Blu-ray player initially turned off & in standby mode. The Start Up Time test was stopped when the player's Home Menu screen appeared. The Play Back Time test was stopped when the Blu-ray disc began playback.

On-Screen Display: In addition to the unit's front-panel display, the NAD Blu-ray player provides an OSD via its HDMI or component video output. The on-screen text can be set to English, French, or Spanish.

Parental Controls: Some movies contain scenes that may not be suitable for children to view. Many of these discs contain parental control information that applies to the complete disc or to certain scenes on the disc. Movies and scenes are rated depending on the country. Some discs offer more suitable scenes as an alternative. Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit (DVD: 1-8, BD: 0-255), preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the levels you set, and it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

Auto Power Off: A screen saver appears if you leave the player stopped or on the Home Menu for more than five minutes; after another five minutes the player automatically turns off.

Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The NAD T 567 comes supplied with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the Blu-ray player.

Remote Control In: A 3.5mm mini-jack IR input on the rear-panel can be connected to an IR repeater or the IR output of another NAD component to control the T 567 remotely.

Has to be one of the best!

Written By M. D, New York City, NY on Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first ordered the Oppo BD95 but unfortunately, I didn't have a compatible home theatre for it. Was may be using only ten percent of what it can do. Called crutchfield and Garry helped me to pick this NAD blu-ray. Let me just tell u. The picture, sound and features of this unit will blow u away. Eventhough, the Oppo has all the great reviews in the world, I may like this NAD better. It definitely works better for the kind of home theatre i have. Give it a try, I don't think you'll return it.
Pros:
Picture, sound and features.
Cons:
Absolutely nothing.
