About the NAD T 585

Dave Bar

Closeout deal on a versatile disc player

When we recently found out that NAD still had a small handful of their killer T 585 disc players left in their warehouse, we jumped on 'em. We just couldn't resist. After all, it's not every day that you come across this kind of quality and performance at such a great closeout price. So if you have an extensive CD, DVD, or SACD collection, check out the NAD T 585. But don't wait too long because when these players are gone, they're gone for good.

Quality that's timeless

We'll be right up front: there are disc players that offer newer features than this sturdy beast, but if playing Blu-ray movies isn't your thing then the T 585 deserves a long look. This versatile player can handle virtually every other kind of disc — whether it's movies or music — and has all the connections you need, including HDMI and multichannel analog audio output, to work with the receiver or pre/pro of your choice.

Its built-in high-quality video and audio processors ensure crisp, clear images and detailed, transparent sound. DVDs also get a boost from NAD's upscaling engine, for a cleaner-looking picture with your standard-definition movies. And if you're an SACD fan, you'll be glad to know that the T 585 does not convert SACDs to PCM format — which defeats some of their sonic advantage — but instead keeps separate DSD signal paths to maintain the highest level possible of SACD, CD, and DVD audio quality.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Playback: The NAD T585 DVD Audio/SACD player supports playback of DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD+R, DVD-R, VCD, SVCD, SACD, CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

DVD Audio: DVD Audio is a digital audio format that delivers high-fidelity audio content on a DVD disc. DVD-Audio supports bit depths up to 24-bit and sample rates up to 192 kHz, while CD audio is only 16-bit, 44.1 kHz. Compared to CD audio discs, DVD Audio offers considerable more music storage, higher audio quality, and additional audio channels for surround sound. DVD-Audio offers many possible configurations of audio channels (up to 5.1-channel surround sound).

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

Note: SACD is only output via the player's 2ch/5.1ch analog outputs. SACD is not output via HDMI or Optical/Coax digital outputs.

HDCD: High Definition Compatible Digital, or HDCD, is a patented process for delivering on CD more of the richness and detail of the original microphone feed. When listening to HDCD recordings, you hear more dynamic range, a focused 3-D soundstage, and more natural vocal and musical timbre. You get the body, depth, and emotion of the original performance - not a flat, digital imitation. HDCD-encoded CDs sound better because they are encoded with 20-bits of real musical information as compared with 16-bits for all other CDs. HDCD overcomes the limitation of the 16-bit CD format by using a sophisticated system to encode the additional 4-bits onto the CD while remaining completely compatible with the CD format.

MP3/WMA Compressed Music Files: The NAD T585 will playback MP3 and WMA music files recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

Video Features

High Quality Video DACs: The NAD T585 uses the high quality Analog Devices 12-bit, 216-MHz video DAC and a second 10-bit, 27MHz DAC from Cirrus Logic to ensure highly accurate playback of delicate, low-level video signals. This produces a vivid picture that is faithful in every detail. Over sampling of 4x is achieved for Progressive and 8x for interlaced video signals, allowing more detailed D/A conversion. Higher quality picture reproduction is also possible thanks to a filter with flexible "shutout characteristics" that is used for the analog filter in the latter stage. Furthermore, the NAD T585 uses two separate video D/A converters to process Progressive and Interlaced signals. This eliminates mutual interference between the Progressive and Interlaced signals and allows both a Standard Definition and a High Definition picture to be output simultaneously.

Video Inputs: The NAD T 585 DVD player is fitted with high definition (HDMI) and standard definition (Component/Composite/S-Video) video input.

  • HDMI: The NAD T 585 features a single HDMI output for HD video and audio signal transmission. The HDMI output supports 480p, 720p, and 1080i resolutions.
  • Component Video (D.D.V.C): The T 585 features one component video output, capable of 480i or 480p output. The Component Video Output offers Progressive Scan option. Dual Discrete Video Circuit (D.D.V.C.) is utilized for the highest possible picture quality via the Component Video output.
  • Composite: The DVD player features one Composite video output for standard 480i video playback.
  • S-Video: The DVD player also features one S-video output for standard 480i video playback
  • VGA: Connect this VGA output port to a VGA-compatible external monitor. This VGA port is compatible with the following resolutions - VGA (640 x 480), XGA (1024 x 768) and SXGA (1280 x 1024).

Faroudja DCDi Circuit for Video Upconversion: The 480p resolution of a standard DVD can be scaled to 720p or 1080ioutput via the HDMI jack.

Progressive Scan: Progressive Scan features the DCDi processor by Faroudja. Progressive Scan technology represents a vast improvement over the interlaced scanning method used in normal TV broadcasts and other conventional applications, as it can process around twice as much video data to produce a sharper, noise-free picture with finer details. Video images are faithfully displayed with optimum naturalness and beauty.

Picture Quality Adjustments: A wealth of picture quality adjustment functions, including Contrast, Brightness, Hue, Sharpness, Black Level and Gamma, can all be adjusted using the intuitive On Screen Display.

Audio Features

24-bit/192kHz DACs: The NAD T585 uses audiophile quality 24-bit, 192-kHz audio D/A converters. This D/A converter ensures that all the sound you hear is as clear and noise-free as possible.

Dolby Digital & DTS: The NAD T585 supports decoding of Dolby Digital & DTS surround formats (up to 5.1ch).

SRS True Surround Circuit: The NAD T585 is also equipped with SRS's True Surround circuit, a high-grade surround virtualizer that lets you enjoy the excitement of 5-channel audio when only using 2 speakers.

Digital Bass Management: Digital Bass Management is available for all surround sound formats. This prevents bass frequencies from overloading and distorting your speakers by 'redirecting' them to your subwoofer which is specially designed to handle the lowest octaves. When playing DVD-Video, DVD-Audio or Super Audio CD sources, it is possible to preset speaker configurations. The crossover point is selectable with 12 dB high and 24 dB low pass filter slopes.

Coax & Optical Digital Outputs: This unit features one optical (toslink) and one coaxial (RCA) digital output. These can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder, or other component with a digital input. Depending on the source and setting, the output will be Dolby Digital, DTS, or 2-channel PCM.

2Ch/5.1Ch Analog Outputs: The T585 has stereo RCA outputs for CDs and SACDs, and 5.1 channel RCA outputs for DVD Video, DVD Audio, and SACDs utilizing the high quality 192 kHz/24-bit digital to analog converters.

Remote Control

IR Remote: In addition to its front-panel control, the NAD T585 includes an IR remote for wireless operation of the DVD player.

IR Input: A 3.5mm minijack IR input on the rear-panel can be connected to an IR repeater or the IR output of another NAD component to control the T585 remotely.

12 Volt Trigger In: This unit can be turned on/off by another device; the +12 volt trigger input is a 3.5mm minijack. When a cable is plugged into this jack the front panel and remote power controls are disabled.

RS 232: The RS-232 port allows connection to a compatible PC or external whole-house control system from companies such as AMX or Crestron.
