About the Bowers & Wilkins P7

David Brown

Another winning headphone from Bowers & Wilkins

If you've ever heard the Bowers & Wilkins P5 or P3 headphones, you've experienced their incredibly smooth sound as well as their luxurious fit and design. But perhaps you prefer a larger headphone that blocks out more noise. In that case, you'll want to check out the Bowers & Wilkins P7. These equally stylish headphones are more effective at keeping the outside world at bay by fitting completely over your ears. That keeps more noise out so you get more of those musical details that these headphones deliver with precision, balance, and just the right amount of punch.

Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones

Gorgeous looks designed for fashion and function

Like its little brothers, the P7's design is impeccable. With soft leather covering the rectangular earcups and headbands, these 'phones offer long-lasting comfort while being tough enough to withstand everyday wear and tear. In between each earcup and the headband glistens a stainless steel hinge, which allows you to fold the headphones up for storage in the supplied case. So even though the P7 may be larger than the P5 and P3, it's no less portable. They'll definitely turn a few heads when you wear them on the plane or in the office.

Take calls and control music with the built-in remote

If you own an iPod®, iPhone®, or iPad®, you'll make fast friends with the P7's built-in remote and microphone. The three-button remote lets you control music playback and skip tracks while also letting you make easy volume adjustments. If you have an iPhone, you can also answer calls with the remote while the built-in microphone picks up your voice. Naturally, calls will sound crystal clear through the headphones. And their noise-isolating design means it won't be a struggle to hear the person you're talking to.

Removable earpads let you swap cables

Don't own an Apple® device? You can always swap out the installed remote cable for the standard one included with the P7. The earpads, held securely in place by magnets, pull off with just a little effort, granting access to the miniplug connector in the left earpiece.

From our Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones review:

Often when I'm reviewing headphones, it takes me a little while to warm up to their sound. I'm used to my own headphones, and anything different requires some time for me to adjust to their tonal signature. But I liked the P7 immediately. I found their sound to be very neutral and uncolored, with particular smoothness in the high and low frequencies.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) P7 over-ear (circum-aural) headphones are manufactured of the finest materials for ultimate performance. With fine leather earcups and headband, stainless steel frame and folding mechanism, and brushed aluminum logo plates, the P7s are both stylish and comfortable for long listening sessions. The headphones come with interchangeable cables, a 1/4" adapter plug, and a soft padded leather pouch.

Earcups and Drivers: The P7 headphones feature 40mm dynamic drivers that work more like a drive unit in a hi-fi speaker. The removable magnetic earpads feature a dual cushioned design that help the pads mold to the listener's head, and keeps the distance between the drive unit and the surface of the ear consistent. This enhances stereo imaging as well as optimizes the sound for every listener. The over-ear design helps shut out external noise.

Folding Design: The headphones have a hinged design that allows you to fold in each earcup for compact storage. They fold like a pair of sunglasses and can be stored in the included padded leather pouch. The pouch is small enough to slide into a briefcase or backpack.

Cables: The B&W P7 headphones come with two 54" interchangeable cables, including one with an in-line microphone and remote that works with your iPhone. The headphone cable has a unique curved terminal on the headphone end that plugs in under the left earcup. The 2.5mm sub-mini plug rests in a contoured jack to protect the terminal and prevents accidental disconnection. A spare cable, without the mic/remote, is supplied. The 3.5mm miniplug features a slim metal connector (just over 1/4" in diameter) that allows you to plug into your portable music device, even when it's housed in a hard protective case. A 1/4" plug adapter is included to allow you to use the headphones with home hi-fi components.

Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad: The in-line mic/remote on the headphone cable is certified to work with Apple i-devices. The 3-button remote can control volume with the two outer buttons and playback with the center button. A single click of the center button will answer or hang up a phone call, and toggle between pause and play. Two quick clicks will skip the playback to the next song, while three quick clicks skips back to the beginning of the currently playing song. The remote and mic are supported by iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, iPod touch (2nd generation or later), iPod classic (120 GB, 60 GB), and iPod nano (4th generation or later). The remote is also supported by iPod shuffle (3rd generation or later). Audio is supported by all iPad and iPod models.

Customer Q&A

Q
I presently have a P7 wired. I will be getting an android based phone and was curious if there are any 3rd party makers for cables with in line mic that would work with the P7 and Android phones. I know cables of this sort can be bought for Senn's Momentums so what about the P7?

A
The connection on the headphone end is a standard 2.5mm jack so, if you can find a 3rd party cable that is Android capable, has the built-in microphone & remote, and terminates with the 2.5mm jack on the headphone end, it should work. We do not offer any such cables here at Crutchfield. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Anyone have issues with the right driver failing? I've been researching these and that seems to be a recurring complaint.

I used this product only for around a month. During that time I did not find any such issues (i:e right driver failing). It sounded amazing. I returned it after around a month of usage, and that was because I found the physical pressure around my ears little too much.

I haven't had any issues with the right driver failing. These are definitely the best head phones i've ever owned.

I've had my pair since shortly after they were released and haven't had any issues. Perhaps the failure issue has something to do with accidentally damaging the wire running from the left side to the right speaker. There are several inches of this cable exposed on both sides of the headphones. If this cable were to snag on something and get pulled hard enough, I could see it getting damaged.

Not for me. If anything they are better from a sonic and fit point of view.

I did not own these long enough for much to go wrong. When I tried them on for the first time, I realized I just did not like wearing head phones. I then sent them back. Thanks for asking. Ken Pober
