Our take on the Bowers & Wilkins P7

by David Brown
Bowers & Wilkins

Another winning headphone from Bowers & Wilkins

If you've ever heard the Bowers & Wilkins P5 or P3 headphones, you've experienced their incredibly smooth sound as well as their luxurious fit and design. But perhaps you prefer a larger headphone that blocks out more noise. In that case, you'll want to check out the Bowers & Wilkins P7. These equally stylish headphones are more effective at keeping the outside world at bay by fitting completely around your ears. That keeps more noise out so you get more of those musical details that these headphones deliver with precision, balance, and just the right amount of punch.

Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones

Gorgeous looks designed for fashion and function

Like its little brothers, the P7's design is impeccable. With soft leather covering the rectangular earcups and headbands, these 'phones offer long-lasting comfort while being tough enough to withstand everyday wear and tear. In between each earcup and the headband glistens a stainless steel hinge, which allows you to fold the headphones up for storage in the supplied case. So even though the P7 may be larger than the P5 and P3, it's no less portable. They'll definitely turn a few heads when you wear them on the plane or in the office.

Take calls and control music with the built-in remote

If you own an iPod®, iPhone®, or iPad®, you'll make fast friends with the P7's built-in remote and microphone. The three-button remote lets you control music playback and skip tracks while also letting you make easy volume adjustments. If you have an iPhone, you can also answer calls with the remote while the built-in microphone picks up your voice. Naturally, calls will sound crystal clear through the headphones. And their noise-isolating design means it won't be a struggle to hear the person you're talking to.

Removable earpads let you swap cables

Don't own an Apple® device? You can always swap out the installed remote cable for the standard one included with the P7. The earpads, held securely in place by magnets, pull off with just a little effort, granting access to the miniplug connector in the left earpiece.

From our Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones review:

Often when I'm reviewing headphones, it takes me a little while to warm up to their sound. I'm used to my own headphones, and anything different requires some time for me to adjust to their tonal signature. But I liked the P7 immediately. I found their sound to be very neutral and uncolored, with particular smoothness in the high and low frequencies.

Features

Overview: The Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) P7 over-ear (circum-aural) headphones are manufactured of the finest materials for ultimate performance. With fine leather earcups and headband, stainless steel frame and folding mechanism, and brushed aluminum logo plates, the P7s are both stylish and comfortable for long listening sessions. The headphones come with interchangeable cables, a 1/4" adapter plug, and a soft padded leather pouch.

Earcups and Drivers: The P7 headphones feature 40mm dynamic drivers that work more like a drive unit in a hi-fi speaker. The removable magnetic earpads feature a dual cushioned design that help the pads mold to the listener's head, and keeps the distance between the drive unit and the surface of the ear consistent. This enhances stereo imaging as well as optimizes the sound for every listener. The over-ear design helps shut out external noise.

Folding Design: The headphones have a hinged design that allows you to fold in each earcup for compact storage. They fold like a pair of sunglasses and can be stored in the included padded leather pouch. The pouch is small enough to slide into a briefcase or backpack.

Cables: The B&W P7 headphones come with two 54" interchangeable cables, including one with an in-line microphone and remote that works with your iPhone. The headphone cable has a unique curved terminal on the headphone end that plugs in under the left earcup. The 2.5mm sub-mini plug rests in a contoured jack to protect the terminal and prevents accidental disconnection. A spare cable, without the mic/remote, is supplied. The 3.5mm miniplug features a slim metal connector (just over 1/4" in diameter) that allows you to plug into your portable music device, even when it's housed in a hard protective case. A 1/4" plug adapter is included to allow you to use the headphones with home hi-fi components.

Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad: The in-line mic/remote on the headphone cable is certified to work with Apple i-devices. The 3-button remote can control volume with the two outer buttons and playback with the center button. A single click of the center button will answer or hang up a phone call, and toggle between pause and play. Two quick clicks will skip the playback to the next song, while three quick clicks skips back to the beginning of the currently playing song. The remote and mic are supported by iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, iPod touch (2nd generation or later), iPod classic (120 GB, 60 GB), and iPod nano (4th generation or later). The remote is also supported by iPod shuffle (3rd generation or later). Audio is supported by all iPad and iPod models.

Very Pleased.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned Bose QC's and Beats and these offer a better, more detailed, richer sound. For not being "noise canceling" headphones they sure do cancel a great deal of noise. They're more comfortable than any set of headphones I've ever owned. The build quality and durability are the best I've owned as well. Can't think of any drawbacks whatsoever.

As usual the service from Crutchfield was stellar.

Great sound, we'll worth the money. First used for a 9-hour flight to Honolulu. Found them to be comfortable throughout the flight. Noise cancellation is good with the over the ear fit. They're not active noise cancellation headphones so don't expect them to be; however, they do quite well. Given the sound quality, comfort, and build quality, I prefer the P7s over my Bose QC- IIIs...Nuff said!

B&W P7 headphones

Written By Sparky, Peoria Il on Saturday, March 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first headphone purchase. I wanted to use these with my iPhone and iPad as well as with my integrated amp and DAC. I listened to a $300 pair of Beats and Bose noise canceling headphones here in Peoria but wasn't impressed with either. I love the B&W P7's. They are closed back design which gives excellent noise isolation. They are very light weight and extremely comfortable right out of the box. They are very well made and look luxurious. The sound is great playing tunes from Beats Music or Spotify on either mobile device. When I plug them into my integrated amp and listen to HD tracks the sound is even better. I find the bass to be clean, realistic and not rumbling. My rumbling bass days are over! I find the P7's do well with Jazz, classical and light rock or pop. I'm enjoying for the first time 50-60 year old Bebop Jazz recordings like Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. It has to be as good as being there live. If your looking for headphones that do it all, these should fill the bill.
Pros:
Sound stage, quality, comfort and convenience. Perfect for use with mobile devices. Audiophile quality with an integrated amp/DAC
Cons:
None

great headphones

Written By george1378, vineland, NJ on Thursday, February 20, 2014

These headphones sound great and look good. I did return them however due to the size being a bit big for my main purpose and that is to listen while walking my dog. If you are buying them to use at home then they are amazing headphones with clean sound and good bass but not overpowering. I am getting the sennheiser momentum headphones today any minute by ups instead so i hope they are better for walks and a bit smaller plus i save a few extra bucks. I also thought because of all the leather they will get too hot on my ears when summer and spring get here. Even the headband is leather.
Pros:
sound quality, look expensive and they are. Built to last.
Cons:
a bit big for mobile use, all leather means hot and sweaty in the warm weather. price is a bit high even though they sound amazing.

Sound - 5, comfort - 1

Written By Leo, Bay Area, CA on Saturday, February 15, 2014

This headphone produces fine sound. Bass is not overwhelming but nicely represented. Mids and highs are all there. Soundstage is somewhat absent. In general, sound grade is A. iMac, iPhone, and ipad are all as to drive those headphones nicely without need for DAC/AMP. The problem with this headphone (at least for me) is absence of any comfort. Being made of pure leather I was expecting better comfort. However, being bald, headphones constantly applied pressure to the top of my head. In about 30 minutes of wearing the headphones, I started to feel pain where headband was. I took them off and noticed a hot spot right on the top of my head. I tried to use those headphones for a week, hoping that leather will eventually soften but that didn't happen. Every day I had to take Advil to take care of the pain left from using the headphone. As much as I liked their sound, I equally hated their comfort. After a week, I had no choice but to return them.

Great Head phones

Written By IAS, MI on Friday, February 14, 2014

these are great headphones, i got the P5 first, they were very compact and sound good but not comfortable after 45 minutes of use, so i thought i will try the P7, these were $100 over P7, of course they are comfortable than P5. I gave 20 hours of break in time, sound quality is superb, not too much bass i think sound is still a little bit on warm side, i think, this is my first really expensive head phone i have been using JBL headphones for many years. The build quality is top notch there is no question about it. Works great with Iphone 5s also, phone calls with head phones really convenient, once call is over music resumes, Sennheiser momentum was the other one i considered but went with P7.
Pros:
Build quality, excellent selection of materail, very good sound quality
Cons:
Expensive a bit as compared to competion

Amazing headphones.

Written By Michael G, Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, January 29, 2014

These are a spectacular pair of cans at a bargain price. I own Grado RS-1s and GS-1000s as well as sennheiser HD-650s and the B&Ws stand up well to the Grados and absolutely murder the HD-650s, for my taste.

They're very warm and articulate, but don't have the "sterile" quality I find common in Sennheisers. Some might replace "sterile" with "clean" in my above statement, but it's a matter of taste. For example, the second solo on Comfortably Numb from David Gilmour live in Gdansk simply comes alive through the B&Ws. You can hear the string attack and the character of the pickups on his Strat perfectly.

The P7 are very comfortable, they don't weigh a ton and feel nice and light on my head. The leather used feels like something from the interior of an Audi, as does the build quality. They sound good directly from my iPhone 5s but really sing on my home system. Musical Fidelity A500 integrated, Tri-Vista 21 DAC, Esoteric cd transport, X-Can headphone amp / hand built tube headphone amp. Highly recommended.
Pros:
Exceptional sound quality, especially on acoustic recordings. Very sweet and warm mids with shimmery treble and articulate bass. They remind me of the tone of a high end Taylor guitar. Very accurate on just about everything I've listened to through them. They don't have extremely heavy bass but they go very low.
Cons:
They took a little while to break in, about a week of letting music play through them. Not unexpected to me, but it's a warning to anyone who thinks they don't sound great right out of the box. They aren't ideal for heavy music unless you run them through an amp. They don't do dance music or rap well at all, they do very tight and low bass but you won't find yourself liking them if you enjoy the sound of Beats headphones.

Cool Enough

Written By Scott, Greenfield, MA on Tuesday, December 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a gift which I thought was going to be sent back because it wasn't "cool" enough. As it turns out, it was well received overall. Around-the-ear fit makes for total comfort which was high on the need list and it also keeps noise to a minimum. Currently being used alot. I'm being told, "it's cool and a keeper" - I won't be sending these back.
Pros:
Sound and Build Quality, also Comfort
Cons:
Price....but you get what you pay for.

The best pair of full sized headphones ever owned

Written By chinnman, Seattle, WA on Wednesday, December 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to upgrade the already venerable B&W P5. Those in itself were a great set of headphones. However, being on-ear fit it got a bit fatiguing after 1 hour or so of wear. So I wanted a new set of over-the-ear headphones. After much research of other great models, I heard that B&W released the P7. I went to a local brick & mortar store that had them for demo, and let me tell you, I was wowed by them in every phase. Overall, sound is stellar. I'm not the type of person that likes tons of bass like the Beats Studio brand, but I like overall sound balance over the spectrum for bass, midrange, and treble. I mean, I can hear things on certain songs and music that I have never heard before from other headphones or earbuds. So overall, these rock! If there is anything criticize, it doesn't provide as much noise isolation as the P5s. But hey, these are over-the-ear and very roomy, comfortable, and very attractive made of the finest materials. So they were not designed to be super noise-isolating. Another thing to mention is the cable is of the thicker, non-tangling type, which I really really love. Highly recommended and worth every penny.
Pros:
Outstanding overall sound balance for all types of music, the best build quality, very very attractive looking, comfortable to wear and can wear it for many hours, nice magnetic and compact carrying case, comes with additional cord for non-iOS use, many 3rd party professional reviewers absolutely rave about this model!
Cons:
Not the best in "noise-isolation" (but that's ok with me, it does enough!)

Best sounding headphones I have ever owned. They're so comfortable I wear them to bed while listening to soothing music. Of course invariably my tossing and turning cause the phones to drop from the bed, end up under a pillow, on the floor, or under my back; incredible durability, the Mercedes Benz of headphones.

Written By Mambo, New York, NY on Saturday, November 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When it comes to headphones , I always look for the price first because I always know that price is directly proportional to quality. I was correct. This headphone even though some would say is expensive, I would say its worth the price because of its quality: its build is very sturdy, it's sound quality is excellent. You don't need to consider noise- canceling headphone if you use this.
Pros:
Good bass, very fashionable and head turner.
Cons:
None that I know.

Excellent

Written By JohnH, Minneapolis, MN on Friday, November 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The noise reduction is quite good considering that is not one of its touted features. Very clear sound throughout the spectrum from bass to tweeter. Great highs, very good bass and crystal clear midrange. Sounds like you are in a sound studio with the music coming from the other side of the room. The ear cups are quite comfortable around your ears, but the headband and attached hardware can seem a bit clunky at times. It folds nicely, but even at that it occupies a wide berth in my backpack. Wish the cups would fold sideways, but a small price to pay for the high quality sound. Appears to be very well made with attractive metal accents and soft expensive looking leather.
Pros:
Sound and quality construction.
Cons:
A bit large even when folded into each other.

My reference headphones

Written By Dan, Las Vegas, NV on Sunday, November 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was waiting for B&W to release an "over the ear" pair of headphones. Once listening to these babies for a while and going back to my other cans, I felt like I was missing music with my other headphones. I own several pairs of headphones, always trying to find the "nirvana" of headphones. I think my look is over!! My other headphones are: Bose QuietConfort 2, Sennheiser HD 600, B&W P5, Audio-Technica ATH-M50, V-MODA M-100. Prior to the P7's, my favorites were the B&W P5's. My V-MODA M-100's are probably the coolest of my headphones and the sound for "Dance" type music is awesome, but with the V-MODA M-100's the sound for classic rock, jazz - not so much. The B&W P7's sound great with any type of music that I throw at them from Dance to classical to classic rock to jazz. Female vocals are superb!!

As for the sound, incredible mid-bass and low-bass response. Excellent detail and strong mid-range, but not tiring to listen to. The highs are excellent too, although my hearing doesn't go much above 8000Hz anymore.

These are so comfortable to wear, I can listen to these for hours (even with glasses on) and I don't feel any pressure points (can't say the same about the P5's).

The build quality is outstanding - as I would expect from B&W. They are very classy looking I might add. Nice leather and aluminum touches. The supplied cables are elegant too, not like the thin ones that comes with the P5's.

Overall the sound is stellar, construction outstanding, comfort is second to none!
Pros:
Sound (including the detail of the mids & highs), comfort, style.
Cons:
Puts my other headphones to shame.
