About the PSB CW180R
High-performance, full-range sound from an in-ceiling speaker
High-performance, full-range sound from an in-ceiling speaker
The CW180R delivers PSB's hallmark musicality and accuracy along with a healthy dose of bass — all in a speaker that installs neatly away in your ceiling for sound that's out of sight in more ways than one. It features an 8" woofer for clear mids and bass down to 38 Hz, and a 1" dome tweeter for smooth highs. The tweeter's swiveling, rotating waveguide means you can aim the sound toward your listening position. Plus, you get midrange and treble adjustment switches to tailor the sound to your room and listening preferences.
This inconspicuous in-ceiling speaker is voice-matched for use with cabinet-built PSBs, and of course, they'll blend with other PSB in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, too. A moisture-resistant design lets you use these speakers in damp areas like your laundry room or bathroom, as well as outdoors under eaves.

Features
Coaxial Speaker Design: The PSB CW180R high-performance square in-ceiling speaker utilizes a coaxial driver design with a 1" metal dome tweeter mated to a 8" polypropylene cone woofer. Coaxial speakers are very popular due to their small footprint making them ideal for space restricted in-ceiling installations.
SonicGuide: The PSB CW180R in-ceiling speaker uses a unique high frequency, constant directivity SonicGuide. The SonicGuide is a proprietary extensively adjustable and aimable, multipart flare attached to the in-ceiling speaker's 1" metal dome tweeter. Its contours and dimensions are designed such that it provides very even response with little variation both on and off axis. It also increases the directivity of the tweeter so that the listener hears transparent, naturally focused sound. Equally important, the SonicGuide reduces "backwards" tweeter energy that otherwise reflects from the woofer cone, thus eliminating a serious response error that plagues virtually every other "coax" speaker. The SonicGuide can be tilted 30° left or right.
Treble/Midrange Level Switches: Two response tailoring switches provide a 3dB adjustment to midrange and tweeter levels.
Basket/Frame: The CW180R has a sturdy ABS basket and frame. The frame can be painted to match any decor (a clear paint mask is supplied to protect the drivers from overspray). The aluminum mesh grille is also paintable.
Speaker Terminals: The PSB CW180R in-ceiling speaker is fitted with spring-load post speaker terminals to connect your in-ceiling speaker wire. The spring-post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual).
Mounting Options: The PSB CW180R uses an effective mounting technique with toggle-style mounting clamps. These four "dog-leg" style mounting clips insure quick, easy, and secure mounting in the ceiling. A template is provided for marking the speaker cutout. It has a series of slots for tracing the cutout and also an outline of the speaker to confirm that the flange won't interfere with any ceiling features. The CW180R requires a cut-out diameter of 9.875" with a mounting dept of 4.0625". There needs to be at least 0.6875" of space around the cut-out to accommodate the in-ceiling speaker's overall frame. The speaker's frame and grille will sit 0.75" away from the ceiling.
Note: For the new construction application, PSB offers Performance Enclosure and Preconstruction Bracket solutions (both sold separately by manufacture). The Performance Enclosure provides optimal low frequency response and is mounted between two studs behind drywall. The Pre-construction Brackets simplify installation in new construction application and can be used with or without the Performance Enclosure.
