About the PSB Image S5

Kristen Schaub

Enjoy enveloping sound from bipole surround speakers

The Image line borrows driver technologies from PSB's higher-end speaker lines, to give you excellent performance at a budget-friendly price. Each S5 features two 1" titanium dome tweeters that effortlessly dish out smooth, uncolored highs. Two long-excursion, high-output 5-1/4" woofers use the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight material helps them deliver midrange that's clean and balanced. You'll be amazed at the realism and immediacy of the sounds of bullets zigging past you or rain drops all around you.

Enjoy enveloping sound from bipole surround speakers

It's hard to beat the seamless, wraparound experience created by bipole surround speakers — especially when those speakers come from PSB. The Image S5s offer rich, dynamic sound with plenty of impact for a thrilling, theater-like experience in your home. Each speaker houses two sets of drivers, arranged at an angle to one another. When you place these speakers behind your listening position, the two sets of drivers help produce a wide rear soundstage that puts you in the middle of the action.

Sleek, thoughtful cabinet design

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. The cabinets have a traditional look, but with slightly curved tops and fronts to soften it. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

Driver Technology

Surround Design: A Image S5 speaker is two 2-way speakers built into one triangular shaped cabinet; each having its own woofer, tweeter, and crossover. The drivers are mounted on baffles facing in different directions, approximately 120° apart. The two speaker sections are wired in phase, as a bipole speaker to flood the area with surround sound.

Cone Design: The woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The magnetically neutral polycarbonate baskets contribute additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plugs enhance linearity at higher frequencies.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, Ferrofluid cooled tweeters use a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.

Crossover Network: The crossovers are 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeters and woofers are crossed over at 1,800 Hz.

Connections

Binding Posts: The 5-way binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single or dual banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The Image S5 can be wall mounted using the included brackets. The bracket adds approximately 3/16" to the depth of the speaker.

Q
Why did the price dropped so much?

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: PSB has discontinued this series so we have reduced the price to sell through remaining inventory. There is not any type of quality issues with this product and it is new, unopened inventory for the special price listed. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Would these work best as side surround speakers or rear surround, or can you not really tell the difference? I need rear surrounds but would rather use these as side surrounds as my fronts are PSB x2ts.

I used the PSB Image S5 speakers in three different positions; Front Highs, Side Surrounds, and Rear Surrounds. They sounded best as Rear Surrounds in my setup. Front Highs were the next best position. It worked as Side Surrounds as well. It is really up to you based on your listening preference. I will say that these are great sounding little speakers.

I believe these bipolar speakers are designed to be used as side surrounds as the sound is more diffuse out of them, whereas rear surrounds should be more direct localizing sound. I would look at getting B5 or something like that as rear surrounds. I use S5 as my side surrounds and B5 as my rear surrounds.

The PSB S5 is a bipole speaker and is designed to be placed behind the listing position. Although there is no law saying you must place them behind the listing position you should IMHO yield better results with them behind the listing position. You can do a Google search for more information than you would probably care to read through on this subject. Don't forget to just enjoy the sound. Hope this helps.

They were made to be used as side surround, thats the way i have mine set up.They sound great, You could try them in the back if you didn't like it,just move them back to the side. I think they will sound better on the sides and get you some smaller monitor/surround for the rear or a smaller towers speakers for the rear.Hope this helps.

I would not discourage someone from using these in either location. Your room size will make a difference. In my smaller theater room. I'm using these as side surrounds. They are far far better than typical bookshelf designs because they provide a broad fill. There is also more side channel information in most movies (5.1 movies far outnumbers 6.1+) so they are actually being used more often.

They work best as side surround speakers and not back speakers because of the offset of the drivers .

I use them as side surrounds with a Denon AVR-X4100W and they're pretty good. I also have X2Ts in front. With the bi-directional speaker angles, I'm not sure you'd get the same effect if they were positioned as rear speakers, but they sounded much better after running the Denon Audyssey calibration, so they may be just as good as rear speakers if properly calibrated. Bottom line, I didn't use the in that application, but I'm very happy with the speakers. And I would recommend them.

The S5s are working great as (side) surrounds in my setup, as they sit fairly close to my listening position. I have PSB bookshelves working as rear surrounds, but they sit pretty far back behind my listening position.

I Use them as high side speakers after going from 7.1 back to 5.1 they are awesome in this location. They give a big rear soundstage and the pan from front to back or the other way around is seamless!

You could use these for either. I have two sets and use them for both rear and side surrounds. I have run them in both 5.1 and 7.1 configurations. The limiting/determining factor will be you room (dimensions/acoustics/reflections/etc...), not the speakers...in other words, experiment with them in both locations.

I am using these as rear surrounds (T65s up front) and they work very well on a 5.1 setup. I replaced a pair of Alphas and the sound field is more immersive. I imagine they would be great as sides as well.
