Overview

Our take on the PSB Image S5

The Image line borrows driver technologies from PSB's higher-end speaker lines, to give you excellent performance at a budget-friendly price. Each S5 features two 1" titanium dome tweeters that effortlessly dish out smooth, uncolored highs. Two long-excursion, high-output 5-1/4" woofers use the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight material helps them deliver midrange that's clean and balanced. You'll be amazed at the realism and immediacy of the sounds of bullets zigging past you or rain drops all around you.

Enjoy enveloping sound from bipole surround speakers

It's hard to beat the seamless, wraparound experience created by bipole surround speakers — especially when those speakers come from PSB. The Image S5s offer rich, dynamic sound with plenty of impact for a thrilling, theater-like experience in your home. Each speaker houses two sets of drivers, arranged at an angle to one another. When you place these speakers behind your listening position, the two sets of drivers help produce a wide rear soundstage that puts you in the middle of the action.

Sleek, thoughtful cabinet design

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. The cabinets have a traditional look, but with slightly curved tops and fronts to soften it. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

Good Move

Jerry Z from Lorain,Ohio on 11/13/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Glad i made the good move when I did. First thing I could not believe the weight of the package when it arrived. Great build quality. The immersive experience in my living room combined with the PSB Silver I's and center channel is the best I've had in my house. Cherry on the cake. The sale price! Not to mention they were at my door within 2 days. Say it again. Crutchfield!

Pros: Quality for price my best experience at that one.

Cons: Arrived too soon I was not ready to install yet? Not one con. I would have to lie.

Perfect

If you are an audiophile these speakers will not disappoint. I bought these to replace a set of Polks and they blew me away for the soundstage they provide to my Polk SDA SRS towers! At this price, these are a no-brainer! Get them before the stock goes away!!

Pros: Great soundstage with great bass and high end to complement the fronts.

Genuine value and Great sound

techbeengood from Texas on 4/28/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm reluctant to praise these speakers too highly and risk quickening their close-out status. I may want to buy more for myself. These PSB Image S5s speakers exude quality. They have exceptional build quality, wonderful sound, and provide an ideal fulfillment of the surround location in 5.1/7.1 systems. I'm using these to replace the Infinity IL40s I've been mis-using as surrounds in a complete Infinity Interlude System. With a big thank you to highly effective automated equalization software in modern AV Receivers, it's fairly easy to more closely match differing speakers in a mixed brand system. These speakers disappear into my system until called on to deliver surround field effects which they do with a natural ease and accuracy. With no expectation that they manage deep bass, which AVRs redirect to the subwoofer, the PSBs fill out the surround field with a wide range of convincing sound effects. And, they accomplish this with a far smaller footprint than my IL40s. I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Pros: Easily fulfill the surround duties in a mixed brand Home Theater system.

Cons: It would have been nice to choose some other cabinet finishes, but I quickly got passed that.

Great surround speaker!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace some old direct radiating bookshelf speakers I was using. WOW these are great sounding. My couch is close to the back wall and I have them mounted high and to the side, movies and multi channel music are both much improved. I Highly recommend them.

Pros: Great sound, not to large, excellent build quality.

Cons: Non yet.

Psb s 5

Tom from Medina, OH on 3/5/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed the s5 into my system. They added another dimension to my listening pleasure.I am using Psb T6 for front speakers along with Psb C 5 center speaker. I have 2 Martin Logan 700 subs that are wireless. I am using the S 5 as my side speakers and Psb B 6 as my surround back. Whether I am watching a movie or listening to music I am very happy with my system. Got a great price on the S 5.

Great surround speakers

bmb from CT on 6/23/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a tremendous bargain for the sale price of 399. They are decent looking, with good build quality and can be easily wall mounted. The sound is great with the titanium tweeter, very detailed. The sound was maybe a little bright at first but mellowed over time. Also, as bipolar surrounds worked perfectly for my placement behind the seating area. I never really expected such an expanded sound field compared to regular bookshelf speakers.

Pros: Good sound, decent build quality, great sale price

Cons: Vinyl rather than real wood veneer

PSB Image S5

David from Austin, TX on 6/22/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For quite some time I was contemplating replacing my trusty original PSB Alpha's with with a pr of "S" series surrounds. Thanks to the outstanding price at Crutchfield I finally did, and they are great. The diffuse sound field they create works very well for our situation where our theater seating is very near the rear wall and the room is has 20ft ceiling. It did require some additional volume to achieve the desired effect but that was expected. Next I will try the Alpha's as height channels to see what that does. My system consists of - Onkyo PR-SC5507 pre, Emotiva UPA7 125w 7 channel amp, PSB T-65 fronts, C-60 center, the S5's, and an eD A5-350 15" sub. PSB truly delivers an audiofile quality listening experience at a wallet friendly price, Long live PSB!

Pros: Great sound field, flush mounting, great looks

Cons: Require a little more oomph than direct radiating speakers

Outstanding!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Every review is, of course, subjective. But, I doubt that anyone who hears these PSB S5s will deny that they belong in the upper echelon of the very best surround speakers. A sound so open and natural that engulfs the listener in sonic bliss - - really! I've been an audiophile since the early 1970s, and got in to home theater surround sound in the late '90s. I also was an early adopter of SACD and DVD-A in 2003. (Have 62 DVD-As and 254 SACDs.) The PSB S5s are perfect for movies and multi-channel audio. Being bipole speakers, they work splendidly for SACDs/DVD-As. Outstanding as rear left and right channels for music! When I saw the price drop (less than half price!), I had to have them (I have PSB Image T6 floor-standing front L and R). This might well be the deal of the century thus far. If you are in the least bit thinking of buying a pair, do not hesitate! Simply wonderful rear L/R speakers for movies and music! You will not find better at anywhere near the sale price, or even considerably more. The S5s offer all you need, perfectly. Paul Barton has been designing PSB speakers since the 1970s, and his work is always applauded in audio/video mags for good reason. Find out for yourself! My highest recommendation!! Borrow the money if you must, but do not miss out on this deal!!

Great Surround Speakers!

bj from Charlotte, NC on 7/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was surprised by the clarity of these speakers, especially for the money. I've always been in the search for the perfect "budget" system; I'm an audiophile with a beer budget you could say (afterall, I have other things I could be spending my money on). The PSB's are a great option for someone like me. They offer great clarity and responsiveness, yet fit my budget. For most people, these would be consider high-end speakers. For a true audiophile, this could be considered a high-end entry system for a great value. It is truly that! The reviews are awesome, and the sound and build quality reflect that perfectly. I was replacing a set of Paradigm Cinema Studio's. One thing that you may want to note: make sure to check out the dimensions and apply for your room type. These are mid-to-large surround speakers. You may be able to get away with the S4's. But if you want a fuller, richer sound...I couldn't recommend them more! PSB has me sold...and I am a customer for life!

Pros: great sound, great quality, durable, mounting hardware included, bipolar design

Cons: single connector (so you can't use multiple amps, etc), large for some room applications.

PSB Image S5

Gary from Stockton, CA on 6/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these to work with a B&W sub/w 10'', a B&W center CM, a Denon 3313 and 4 Harmon Kardon (thirty series from the 1990's). They did bring this eclectic group together in a very good way. I was a bit unsure when I ordered the PSB's, but, with Crutchfield's I felt I would not go wrong. The PSB S5's are clear clean and just disappear into the sound experience.

Pros: High quality appearance and sound. In the world of speakers they are worth the price.

Cons: I can't think of any cons.

Driver Technology

Surround Design: A Image S5 speaker is two 2-way speakers built into one triangular shaped cabinet; each having its own woofer, tweeter, and crossover. The drivers are mounted on baffles facing in different directions, approximately 120° apart. The two speaker sections are wired in phase, as a bipole speaker to flood the area with surround sound.

Cone Design: The woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The magnetically neutral polycarbonate baskets contribute additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plugs enhance linearity at higher frequencies.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, Ferrofluid cooled tweeters use a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.

Crossover Network: The crossovers are 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeters and woofers are crossed over at 1,800 Hz.

Connections

Binding Posts: The 5-way binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single or dual banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The Image S5 can be wall mounted using the included brackets. The bracket adds approximately 3/16" to the depth of the speaker.

I used the PSB Image S5 speakers in three different positions; Front Highs, Side Surrounds, and Rear Surrounds. They sounded best as Rear Surrounds in my setup. Front Highs were the next best position. It worked as Side Surrounds as well. It is really up to you based on your listening preference. I will say that these are great sounding little speakers. [ DANNY V  Aug 11, 2015 ]
I believe these bipolar speakers are designed to be used as side surrounds as the sound is more diffuse out of them, whereas rear surrounds should be more direct localizing sound. I would look at getting B5 or something like that as rear surrounds. I use S5 as my side surrounds and B5 as my rear surrounds. [ Sanjay  Aug 10, 2015 ]
The PSB S5 is a bipole speaker and is designed to be placed behind the listing position. Although there is no law saying you must place them behind the listing position you should IMHO yield better results with them behind the listing position. You can do a Google search for more information than you would probably care to read through on this subject. Don't forget to just enjoy the sound. Hope this helps. [ DONNELL  Aug 10, 2015 ]
They were made to be used as side surround, thats the way i have mine set up.They sound great, You could try them in the back if you didn't like it,just move them back to the side. I think they will sound better on the sides and get you some smaller monitor/surround for the rear or a smaller towers speakers for the rear.Hope this helps. [ WAYNE  Aug 10, 2015 ]
I would not discourage someone from using these in either location. Your room size will make a difference. In my smaller theater room. I'm using these as side surrounds. They are far far better than typical bookshelf designs because they provide a broad fill. There is also more side channel information in most movies (5.1 movies far outnumbers 6.1+) so they are actually being used more often. [ WILLIAM  Aug 10, 2015 ]
They work best as side surround speakers and not back speakers because of the offset of the drivers . [ DAVID M  Aug 10, 2015 ]
I use them as side surrounds with a Denon AVR-X4100W and they're pretty good. I also have X2Ts in front. With the bi-directional speaker angles, I'm not sure you'd get the same effect if they were positioned as rear speakers, but they sounded much better after running the Denon Audyssey calibration, so they may be just as good as rear speakers if properly calibrated. Bottom line, I didn't use the in that application, but I'm very happy with the speakers. And I would recommend them. [ Thomas  Aug 10, 2015 ]
The S5s are working great as (side) surrounds in my setup, as they sit fairly close to my listening position. I have PSB bookshelves working as rear surrounds, but they sit pretty far back behind my listening position. [ Joshua  Aug 10, 2015 ]
I Use them as high side speakers after going from 7.1 back to 5.1 they are awesome in this location. They give a big rear soundstage and the pan from front to back or the other way around is seamless! [ BRIAN  Aug 10, 2015 ]
You could use these for either. I have two sets and use them for both rear and side surrounds. I have run them in both 5.1 and 7.1 configurations. The limiting/determining factor will be you room (dimensions/acoustics/reflections/etc...), not the speakers...in other words, experiment with them in both locations. [ Chris  Aug 10, 2015 ]
I am using these as rear surrounds (T65s up front) and they work very well on a 5.1 setup. I replaced a pair of Alphas and the sound field is more immersive. I imagine they would be great as sides as well. [ Gozar  Aug 10, 2015 ]
