Our take on the PSB Image T5

by Kristen Schaub
PSB

Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

High-performance sound from a slim floor-standing speaker

PSB's Image T5 delivers refined sound with the kind of spatial and dynamic accuracy that will make it a hit in any home theater or stereo music system. The Image line borrows from driver technologies developed for PSB's sophisticated Imagine family and their top-tier Synchrony speakers, giving you high-end sound at a budget-friendly price. The Image line also features a slightly different cabinet design than its predecessors, showcasing clean lines that won't clutter up your listening room.

High-tech drivers produce clean, well-balanced sound

K2 Power crossover network

The tweeter uses a powerful neodymium magnet for crystal-clear highs.

The Image T5 features a 1" titanium dome tweeter that effortlessly dishes out smooth, uncolored highs. The long-excursion, high-output woofers use the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cones as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight material helps them deliver midrange that's clean and balanced, with excellent imaging. The dual woofer design paired with a port at the front of the enclosure allows for extended, defined bass response uncommon for a speaker this size.

Sleek, thoughtful cabinet design

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. The cabinets have a traditional look, but with slightly curved tops and fronts to soften it. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

Driver Technology

Cone Design: The woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The magnetically neutral polycarbonate baskets contribute additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plugs enhance linearity at higher frequencies.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium, Ferrofluid cooled dome tweeter's light yet rigid diaphragm and over hung voice coil, combined with a computer optimized magnetic circuit produce an extended high frequency response that remains distortion free even at extreme volume levels. The front baffle is designed to eliminate mid and high frequency diffractions, maximizing three dimensional realism.

Crossover Network: The crossover is a 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeter and top woofer are crossed over at 1,800 Hz, the bottom woofer plays only 800 Hz and below.

Enclosure Design

Cabinet: The cabinet is an integral part of speaker design and has a dramatic effect on the overall sound of a speaker. PSB's 7-layer laminated construction results in a solid, acoustically inert enclosure. The side and top panels are curved for added stiffness, with a wood veneer exterior. Internally the cabinet has two separate chambers, each with its own port on the rear panel.

Port Cover: There are two ports on the rear panel, one for each of the internal chambers. One port cover is included to seal a port (if necessary), thereby changing the bass tuning characteristics of the speaker to correct the interaction with the room. If needed, additional port covers can be obtained from PSB for a nominal fee.

Connections

Binding Posts: The dual binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by a gold-plated jumper. With the jumper removed the Imagine T5 can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Mounting Options

Leveling Feet: The Imagine T5 includes two sets of leveling feet; the rubber covered feet are used on a hard surface and add approximately 1/2" to the height of the speaker, the carpet spikes add approximately 1" to the height.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I did a lot of research before I choose what speakers I wanted. I had not heard PCB speakers but all the reviews that I read were all positive. I found them on Crutchfield and because of there 60 day return policy I ordered them. These Speakers are everything I thought and so much more. I bought these to improve my home theater but I cant stop listening to music. These are GREAT speakers.... I love them.
Pros:
These are great speakers for the price. I cant imagine that you can find anything better.
Cons:
none

Beautiful Sound, Beautiful Look

Written By Jim, Central VA on Sunday, November 18, 2012

I am fortunate enough to live near the Crutchfield store so I can go in and compare the different speakers they offer side by side, they even let me listen to the Thiels even though I had no intention of buying them. When I listened to the PSB series I was amazed at their clarity and depth. Every PSB speaker I listened to had a wonderful sound. I talked with the guys in the store and they highly recommended the PSB brand because of the quality of sound they deliver at such a great price point. I have to say I agreed. I was limited by my wife on the size of the speaker I could put in our living room area so I was thrilled when I saw the small foot print of the T5 speakers. My wife even liked the simple yet stylish beauty of them. I was able to buy the T5s in the outlet center so I got an amazing deal on them but it doesn't matter, they are well worth their list price. Every genre of music I have played on them, from classical to jazz to rock, all sound wonderful. I have them set up in a 3.1 sound system using the PSB Image C5 as my center channel with everything driven by a Marantz 5006. I have to say, they do a great job with movie sound tracks as well as television. I can not stress enough how great these speakers sound. You could easily pay twice as much for speakers and not get half the sound quality.
Pros:
Great sound clarity and depth with a small foot print. Beautiful looking speakers as well.
Cons:
Nothing. Unless you want unfairly compare them to speakers that cost three times as much.

wonderful sounding speaker

Written By eric, Birmingham, AL on Wednesday, January 26, 2011

I went back and forth between basically every psb speaker trying to decide wants and needs. I decided to go with the most inexpensive knowing that if I was happy with it then money well spent. I have been quite happy with the sound/staging and depth of these speakers. I am powering them with the nad t747 and they they sound great. The first cd I played a few weeks was a live recording of Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden from May 2010. I was at the concert so it was interesting to so see how it would remind me of being there. We had great seats but this setup put us just feet from the stage in 'feel'. It's been a great purchase. Voices clear and detailed, adequate bass for stereo listening, good mids and highs, detailed, no detectable cabinet resonance to me. Resonance was one of my bigger concerns at this price point but the cabinet is solid. Vinyl on the cabinet has the feel and look of wood too. I do prefer a sub with them for music and ht but for music they are ok without sub dependant on type of music. Yes I would purchase them again.

1 question already asked

I would be using this speaker exclusively for music listening. I will be powering these speakers with an Onkyo A-9050 Integrated Amp (75 Watts/channel). Does this speaker sound good for music listening on it's own, or is it recommended to get a subwoofer? I am interested in comments from customers who use these speakers to listen to music on a regular basis. [ Mark  Mar 11, 2014 ]

  • Mark, The Image T5 does not NEED a subwoofer for thoroughly enjoyable music listening. If you prefer stronger bass you can always add a subwoofer later. The Image T5 is a wonderful speaker. Jeff S. [ Jeffrey   Mar 13, 2014 ]
  • It's a very good speaker on it's own, but, as it happens, I decided to send it back and get the T6, which I don't regret. I also listen to music exclusively with them (classical mostly), and I've really enjoyed them. The T5 is good, but the T6 is, not surprisingly, as step up. The only thing I'll add is that if you think you want something less obtrusive, consider the Imagine (or cheaper Image) series bookshelf speakers; but with them you might need a subwoofer--or eventually want one. I don't think a subwoofer will be necessary with either the T5 or T6. [ CARL C   Mar 12, 2014 ]
  • Hey Mark, I would be happy to help. I purchased a pair of these for my home theater. The original receiver I purchased was a Marantz and sounded nice, but did not think it was up to the task (or the unit I had was not good). The T5 ohm curve does dip into the 4-ohm range at certain levels and the receiver you picked does appear to be 4-ohm rated. The receiver I ended up with was a pioneer elite and was 4-ohm rated unlike the marantz. In stereo I can push these speakers pretty hard without much distortion and have a neutral sound profile (good clear highs, tight bass, not overpowering at all). Personally, I think these speakers have a really nice balanced sound. If bass is your thing though, you may need a sub. The woofers are only 5.25", and play down to 35hz, but do not deliver a huge amount of bass. Good luck. [ ALLEN   Mar 12, 2014 ]
  • I was not impressed at all by these speakers so I returned them. I tried to like them so I kept them for a while to see of they broke in, but they just where not for me. You defiantly need a sub, and your amp will have plenty of power to drive them. Hope that helps. [ J   Mar 12, 2014 ]
  • Hi, I just bought these back in December and I couldn't be more happy with them. I'm using an Onkyo TX-NR509 (80W/channel) and I haven't noticed any problems with them. I chiefly use these for listening to music (mostly directly from my computer or streamed) and the clarity, loudness, base, and depth are all amazing. [ Tobias   Mar 12, 2014 ]
