About the PSB SubSeries 100

Dave Bar

Little dog with big dog attitude

Shhhh, please don't tell the SubSeries 100 powered subwoofer just how tiny it is...it thinks it's big. And when you hear it, you'll think it's big, too. That's because PSB packed an amazing amount of muscle into this ultra-compact cube. Match it with PSB's Alpha PS1 powered speakers to create a pint-sized sound system that delivers serious, big-dog sound.

Bring your music, movies, and video games to life

PSB designed the SubSeries 100 to bring powerful bass performance to your desktop listening environment. This mighty mite even packs enough punch to fill smaller rooms. Its carefully engineered and computer-optimized 5-1/4" woofer is paired with an efficient, cool-running 50-watt Class D amplifier for tight, accurate low-frequency sound. You'll feel the rumble of explosions in your favorite Hollywood blockbusters and hear the crowds roar when you score a goal in your favorite game. It's great for music, too, like when you want to really hear the taut, tuneful sound of an upright acoustic bass from a classic jazz number.

Full-size controls and flexibility

The SubSeries 100 might be small, but it still gives you all the versatility of a full-sized subwoofer. You get an adjustable volume control, plus controls for setting the crossover frequency and inverting phase to ensure a perfect sonic match with your main speakers and your room. Rear-panel line level inputs accept both stereo preamp outputs and the mono subwoofer input from an A/V receiver or PSB's own Alpha PS1 powered speakers. The sub even comes equipped with a USB power port to charge and operate your compatible USB devices.

Product Research

Features

5.25" Woofer/50W Amp: A specially designed 5.25" long-throw polypropylene woofer is computer optimized to get the best bass extension and dynamic range without distortion. An innovative filter pole shifting technique is used to squeeze the maximum deep bass from the specially engineered driver unit. The acoustic suspension enclosure is extremely rugged and resonance-free assuring that only the desired bass frequencies are radiated into the room for clean articulate bass response. The efficient and cool running 50W (continuous) Class D amplifier is capable of 100W dynamic peak power and carefully matched to the driver. By matching the amplifier to the driver characteristics a synergy is achieved that boosts the level of performance far beyond what could be achieved otherwise.

Volume/Crossover/Phase Control: Along with adjustable volume, there are controls for setting the crossover frequency (50-150Hz) and inverting the phase (0°/180°) to facilitate a perfect and seamless integration between the full-range or satellite speakers you have partnered with the SubSeries 100 powered sub.

Note: Recommended settings for the SubSeries 100 when matched with the PSB Alpha PS1 Powered Speaker (760ALPHPS1, sold separately) are as follows - 0° phase, crossover half-way, and half volume (marked on sub). This combination creates an incredible micro-sized full range desktop system for your computer audio.

RCA/LFE Input: Line-level RCA inputs accept both stereo preamp outputs and the mono LFE channel input from an AV Receiver. Use the powered sub's Left RCA input for an LFE signal.

Auto On/Standby: When an audio signal is received by the SubSeries 100, the powered subwoofer turns on automatically. When no audio signal is detected, the sub's amplifier will automatically turn off after approximately 15 minutes.

Q
Would this sub work with a soundbar with a sub output? It would be for a bedroom TV setup.

A
It should work just fine since the sub is powered independently. This sub turns on automatically when it receives a signal and goes into standby shortly after the signal has stopped. I use this sub in a bedroom to play MP3's as well as watching Netflix on my computer screen. It is difficult to find a sub this size for a bedroom and I have been very pleased with its performance.

A
Yes, it would be. But, note this item is out of stock at Crutchfield.

I have it in my office, it gives enough I think for a small/medium bedroom. Good for giving deeper end to smaller speakers or a soundbar. Sealed design with good sound. It thumps more than you would expect for its size. But it's obviously not a 12" sub, so it won't rattle the bed...!!!

The sub has it's own power amp. If you have sub output I woul say yes. You might double check with Crutchfield technician, but I'm pretty sure it will. The bass isn't over bearing it is a nice tight bass. I have the whole Alpha 1 system hooked up to my computer running through a separate dac/amp for headphones. I couldn't be more pleased with the system for movies and music.

I'm using mine with a headphone output. I assume any line-level output would work. BTW I think the unit sounds great.
stuart  Jan 28, 2018

I am sure that it would, I am using it with a Yamaha receiver in my living room with 5 speakers. It sounds great. I had to dial it back a little, my wife is bothered by heavy bass.
leonard  Jan 28, 2018

I would think that it would work very well. It has tight sounding bass. I have this sub connected to a 5.1 surround sound system. Sounds fantastic.
keith  Jan 28, 2018
A
Yes, that is exactly how I am using it. It is one amazing little subwoofer.
david  Jan 28, 2018
A
I don't see why not, as long as the line out on the soundbar's sub output is coaxial (red and/or white audio cable). If that's the case, then you will be very pleasantly surprised by the output of this minuscule sub.

Q
Is position of the sub critical? I also have the Alpha B1s on my desk but am limited on space- will it sound okay under my desk?

A
The position of the sub isn't all that critical. I am using it with my home receiver and it provides plenty of bass for music and movies. It sits about 10 feet from the viewing area and there is still plenty of bass. I think under your desk will be just fine, it may need a little tweaking though to find the sweet spot.

I have mine under a desk and it sounds great

Q
Do you suggest this product for making music? Is it usb powered or does it just power usb electronics.
iwanna  Jan 31, 2014

A
As far as making music, depends on your application. I'm using the PSB sub along with the PSB Alpha B1s, driven by a Meridian Explorer DAC directly from a PC. The Meridian Explorer is a fantastic DAC, plugs directly into one of my PC's USB ports, then connects to the PSB Alpha B1s via a 3.5mm to RCA interconnect (I'm using the AudioQuest Sydney interconnect). the Alpha B1s are powered speakers and sound fantastic in their own right. After I had them in place for a couple of weeks, I decided to add the PSB 100 sub. The sub itself is just great in this application, and filled out the bottom end very nicely. Understand this is a computer desktop system, and in that application the sound is very hard to beat. I've got a very high-end, dedicated two-channel system that this little desktop system rivals in terms of its musicality. I love listening to it while I work. The PSB Subseries 100 is a standard, powered sub that you feed signal to using a standard subwoofer interconnect. It is not USB powered nor can you use it in a USB application. The PSB Alpha B1s have a subwoofer out port that sends signal to the sub. So, in this application both the Alphas and the 100 sub are separately powered (standard 120V electrical connection). If you are thinking of using this sub in a dedicated two-channel set-up that's used for anything other than a desktop or very small room application, I don't think it will be a good solution, due to its diminutive size. But in my 10x13 study at home, this system works great and is amazingly musical. I think a lot of that is due to the quality of the Meridian DAC but the Sub 100 and the Alpha B1s work great together and are real winners as well.Hope this helps.
