Powerfully musical bass from PSB and NAD

When two legendary audio companies like PSB Speakers and NAD Electronics join forces, you can bet great things are going to happen. The happy result of this dynamic union is the PSB SubSeries 300, the first in a new line of PSB subwoofer designs powered by NAD's sophisticated, high-efficiency electronics. Unlike some other subs that belt out bass simply for the window-rattling effect, this subwoofer delivers high-impact bass with speed and accuracy. PSB matched a custom-designed, 300-watt NAD amplifier with one of their potent, front-firing 12" drivers for an unbeatable combination with superior bass clarity and deep-down musicality. The '300 was designed to perfectly complement your high-performance two-channel audio system or home theater setup.

Flexible inputs and convenient controls

PSB makes it easy to integrate the SubSeries 300 with your existing system. You can hook your receiver or separate audio components up to the sub through its LFE, line-level, or speaker-level connections. The conveniently placed, front-panel crossover and bass volume controls lets you dial in the sound to match the rest of your speakers. And a phase switch lets you tweak the sub's output for more precise bass response.

Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for some high-end equipment to compliment my Adcom amp and Legacy Speakers, PSB does the trick. I purchased the PSB sub, center channel and rears, so if you are looking nice looking, nice sounding surround sound system you can't go wrong with PSB.

Pros: No distortion, clear thumping bass

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first powered subwoofer I have ever owned, so I am certainly not an expert on these things. I had earlier purchased a pair of PSB CS1000 outdoor speakers for my deck and was extremely impressed with them---especially the bass output from such a small speaker. So when I went shopping for a powered subwoofer for the living room, I figured I could not go wrong with PSB. I had that sinking feeling when I first fired it up and had very little volume, but a call to Crutchfield Support remedied the situation by walking me through all the setting changes on my Denon receiver to accommodate the powered sub. I am very happy with the sound and have no regrets going with PSB and Crutchfield.

Pros: Built like a tank. No vibration or distortion I can hear. No shortcuts on the speaker or amplifier quality as far as I can tell.

Cons: Not sure if I like the volume control on the front behind the grill. I had to fiddle with it a lot when getting it set up. Haven't needed to mess with it since though.

Solid Performer

Written by: Tom from Rochester NY on April 2, 2012

When I was shopping for new subs, I first looked for trendy models which could go very low for special effects. But the more I listened, it became clear that what I really wanted was a musical sub which would blend in well with my speakers. These subs are excellent when paired with the PSB Synchrony 2 series, driven by an NAD T787 AVR. I cross over the towers at 50HZ and the Center at 70Hz. The subs fill in the lows very seamlessly down to 25-30 Hz.

Exceptional accuracy with music and realistic LFE effects more than make up for the inability to go down to super-low regions for the occasional special effects burst. Although there's a lot of competition in this price range, I liked these subs so much that I bought two of them for my wide living room.

Pros: Very musical, especially clean upright bass, bass guitars, and kick drums -- excellent build quality, flexible positioning, very clean amp

Cons: Some drop-off at low LFE special effects, occasional delay activating auto-on

PSB SubSeries: The PSB SubSeries 300 powered subwoofer is designed to provide the flattest possible frequency response, full bass extension, low distortion, and high output. The PSB SubSeries powered subwoofer is perfect for music and movie soundtracks.

Class D Discrete MOSFET Amp (from NAD): The PSB SubSeries 300 powered subwoofer employs a custom-designed Class D discrete MOSFET amplifier from NAD. The integrated digital amplifier from NAD features an automatic varying switching frequency that maintains maximum efficiency and low THD under all conditions. The Class D amplifier also incorporates proprietary limiting circuitry preventing audible overload while remaining true to the dynamics of your music or movie sound track. This circuitry combines peak limiting circuits that hold amplifier signal swing to the point just short of the amplifier's clipping, with compression circuitry that will reduce the amplifier's gain.

12" Woofer: To compliment the powerful Class D amplifier, the SubSeries 300 uses a 12" polypropylene cone woofer with rubber surround, 1.5" voice coil, and 35oz magnet. The PSB woofer is designed to reduce mechanical noise and prevent harsh sounds at extreme excursion.

Bass-Reflex Cabinet: The PSB SubSeries 300 powered subwoofer features a bass-reflex cabinet with a down-firing port for greater efficiency and bass response. The down-firing port has a large radius end that flare to reduce noise from air turbulence.

Front-Mounted Controls: Two rotary control knobs (volume/crossover) and phase switch are provided on the front of the subwoofer for added convenience. The front-mounted controls are hidden behind detachable grille.

Volume Control: The rotary volume knob controls the output level of the powered subwoofer, relative to the volume of the other speakers in the system.

Low-Pass Crossover: The low-pass crossover adjusts the high-frequency roll-off of signals sent to the subwoofer. The control is continuously variable from 50 Hz to 150 Hz, and allows you to precisely match the subwoofer's bass production with your system's main left & right stereo speakers.

Phase Switch: The phase switch allows for the adjustment of the phase of the subwoofer in relation to the speakers used in the system; either 0 or 180 degrees.

Auto On/Off: The powered subwoofer features a main power switch on the back panel. When switched to On, the subwoofer is initially in stand-by mode, awaiting the presence of an audio signal. When the signal is received, the subwoofer turns on automatically. When no signal is detected, the sub's amp will automatically turn off after approximately 15 minutes. In the Off position, the subwoofer will not power up. A green LED, located on the front panel between the control knobs, will glow when the subwoofer is active (it will glow red when off).

LFE Input/Output: A single gold-plated RCA jack (LFE) is provided for connecting the powered subwoofer to your AV receiver's LFE output. Since the subwoofer/LFE outputs are filtered by most receivers/processors, the subwoofer's variable low-pass filter is not required and is bypassed. The powered subwoofer also has an LFE output for adding additional subwoofers.

Stereo RCA Inputs: Two gold-plated RCA jacks are provided for connecting your source unit via the low-level input. If your receiver or integrated amplifier has preamp outputs, or if you are using a preamplifier without a designated subwoofer/LFE output, the preferred connection is to use a stereo RCA cable plugged into both left and right inputs. If the preamp outputs are unfiltered, the subwoofer's internal crossover should be used.

Stereo RCA Outputs: The sub also has gold-plated RCA low-level output jacks, useful if your amp has pre-out/main-in jacks, or when using a separate preamp and amplifier. The low-level output is internally processed by the sub's active crossover; the high-pass slope is 12dB/octave and the crossover point is fixed at 80Hz.

Speaker-Level Input: Two pairs of 5-way binding post terminals (for left and right channel) are provided for connecting the powered sub with speaker wire. The terminals will accept bare wire, spade lugs, pin connectors, and single or dual banana plugs.

Power Cord: The subwoofer has a removable 8' power cord with an IEC 2-pronged connector. This allows you to use a third-party IEC-type power cord, if desired.
