Overview

Our take on the PSB Synchrony One B

Capable bookshelf speakers for the stereo music enthusiast

PSB's Synchrony One B produces remarkably natural sound that's similar to the line's impressive floor-standing speakers. Your eyes will appreciate its simple, sophisticated looks, and your ears will appreciate PSB's precise driver design. This speaker's compact bookshelf design and outstanding performance make it a great fit for dedicated two-channel music systems.

Great sound begins with quality driver materials

The 1" titanium dome tweeter is carefully crafted to produce smooth, accurate highs free from distortion and grain. The woofer cone is made of fine-weave fiberglass, which creates a stiff, self-damping cone. You'll hear exceptionally clean mids with excellent detail and tonal accuracy, plus surprisingly deep bass for a speaker this size. Extra-large voice coils and virtually distortion-free motor structures help preserve clarity and detail. Plus the rigid, cast aluminum baskets are magnetically inert for maximum efficiency.

Woofer

The woofer uses a lightweight, rigid fine-weave fiberglass cone for exceptionally smooth response.

Tweeter

The tweeter uses a high-flux neodymium magnet to maintain clear, accurate highs, even during dynamic peaks like explosions or cymbal crashes.

Top-notch crossover ensures optimal sound dispersion

PSB's years of design experience and tireless testing at the National Research Council in Canada have led to a superior crossover design. The high-quality components are carefully picked to create the fourth-order crossovers that go into Synchrony speakers. Meticulous engineering ensures minimal driver overlap, with precisely chosen crossover points to maintain proper dispersion. The result is a smooth frequency response over a wide "sweet-spot."

A solid cabinet with a luxurious, real-wood veneer finish

Cabinet cutaway

Extruded aluminum front and back panels hold the curved, seven-layered side panels in place, creating an incredibly rigid, acoustically inert cabinet.

The Synchrony One B's heavy, rigid cabinet helps eliminate vibrations to maintain tonal accuracy. The double-walled aluminum front and back cabinet surfaces hold the curved side panels in place. Each side panel is constructed using seven layers of MDF, each one individually laminated to improve the panel's stiffness and absorb sonic energy that might otherwise color the sound. The top and side panels are clad in real wood veneer that's hand selected for its beauty and quality.

It sounds pretty good (when all the parts are there)

Written by: Pete R from La Salle Il on April 26, 2016

After receiving the scratch and dent version of my PSBs and hooking them up to the Peachtree Nova 220 amp of the same lineage using the obscenely expensive Audio Quest cables the sound was amiss. After doing a little research found out that a piece that was supposed to connect the four terminals in the back of the speaker was missing. Called Crutchfield was told that a couple pieces of speaker wire would do the trick. Wasn't happy with that response and was told I would receive those straps. Got the package but there was only one strap inside. Called Crutchfield again and they sent the other strap. Hooked everything up. Had the best speakers I've heard. Decided to add the 200 subwoofer , which fit in seamlessly. And I've got all the sterio ill ever need

Pros: Sound is fantastic

Cons: Speakers did not arrive complete

Very close to perfect

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you're looking for a speaker that's detailed, accurate, unassuming this is it. They'll do exactly what the music asks of them. These are so good they're almost boring. Laid back and non-fatiguing. Imaging and frequency response change little whether you're sitting or standing. They're not picky about placement. Bass response is good and reasonably extended for a bookshelf speaker. If character is what you're seeking, look elsewhere. This is an extremely balanced, well-designed and constructed, and satisfying loudspeaker for all music styles. Pros: - Frequency response is FLAT - Smooth sound from top to bottom - Solid, outstanding build quality - Will do whatever your music or amplifier asks

Cons: - Expensive considering the competition these days - Not the best looking or stylish

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gave these speakers a 5 star rating. They are truly great sounding speakers. I couldn't be happier. I replaced my older speakers that were a lesser brand and what a difference. If you are ready to take a plunge into the somewhat higher end speakers start here! Rich sound, clear and paired with the right amplifier get ready to be blown away!

Pros: Great sound, nice size, simple and good looking design.

Cons: none as of now

Driver Technology

Cone Design: The woofer cones are a laminated sandwich design; each has a fine weave fiberglass layer along with a compressed, felted natural fiber laminate. The result is a rigid cone with added damping properties. The central dustcap offers a second connection to the voice coil to improve bass and midrange control. The inherent distortion resulting from the magnetic field generated by the input signal reacting with the field in the magnetic structure's air gap and the self-induction and impedance that varies with cone movement are addressed using an aluminum shorting ring within the magnet structure, an aluminum phase plug on the pole piece, and a shorted copper turn on top of the pole piece. The aluminum phase plug also mechanically smoothes the response and acts as a heat sink for the voice coil, reducing power compression. The drivers use cast aluminum baskets and rubber surrounds.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium, Ferrofluid cooled dome tweeter has a neodymium motor structure and an aluminum heat sink. The mass (low) and stiffness (high) are optimized for the required wide frequency response.

Crossover Network: The dual binding post input terminals are located on the rear panel of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by a gold-plated jumper. With the jumper removed the Synchrony One B can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Enclosure Design

Cabinet: The cabinet is an integral part of speaker design and has a dramatic effect on the overall sound of a speaker. PSB uses a combination of aluminum and wood in the Synchrony One B's construction. The front baffle and rear panel are made of double wall aluminum extrusions. The aluminum panels are very rigid and precisely machined with contours to preserve the sonic characteristics of the drivers. The side panels are seven layers of 3mm MDF, curved for added stiffness, with a wood veneer exterior. While rigid, MDF also has inherent damping properties to absorb energy that might otherwise color the music.

Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The dual binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by a gold-plated jumper. With the jumper removed the Imagine B can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Absolutely. This is a full range bookshelf loudspeaker. Generally, your room size will determine what speaker design (bookshelf versus tower) will play best. I use these as a 2.0 system in a 17 by 20 foot room, and I am more than happy with their volume and bass. Most speakers will benefit from a subwoofer especially if you're looking for extra low and loud bass. [ EDWIN  Dec 19, 2013 ]
I use them in a 2.0 system (no sub-woofer). The sound they produce is exquisite. Personally, I don't find the bass to be lacking. For me, a sub-woofer is not needed. I am very pleased with the purchase. [ James  Dec 19, 2013 ]
