About the PSB Synchrony Two

Kristen Schaub

Exceptional sound from a slim, elegant tower

The 1" titanium dome tweeter is carefully crafted to produce smooth, accurate highs free from distortion and grain. The woofer cones are made of fine-weave fiberglass, which creates a stiff, self-damping cone. Whether you enjoy intense action flicks or smooth jazz, these woofers can handle pretty much anything you throw at them. You'll hear exceptionally clean mids with excellent detail and tonal accuracy. Plus, the three smaller woofers effectively move as much air combined as a single woofer several times their size, allowing them to produce surprisingly deep and very precise bass for a speaker this size.

Exceptional sound from a slim, elegant tower

PSB's Synchrony Two takes after the top-of-the-line Synchrony One tower speaker in design and performance, but has a slimmer profile and a smaller footprint that makes it ideal for intimate spaces. It's carefully engineered to produce absolutely natural sound, whether you're listening to movie soundtracks or stereo music. Your eyes will appreciate this speaker's simple, sophisticated looks, and your ears will appreciate PSB's precise driver design.

"A sonic extrovert, with a darker voluptuous tonality that reaches deep into the lower midrange and bottom octaves, the Synchrony Two offers bone-rattling, dynamic excitement in a sleek, five-driver, two-way bass-reflex design."
—Neil Gader, The Absolute Sound, March 2010

Unique, four-driver array produces smooth sound

Construction detail

Synchrony tower speakers are internally divided into three distinct chambers separating the woofers, for cleaner sound.

Great sound begins with quality driver materials

Extra-large voice coils and virtually distortion-free motor structures help preserve clarity and detail. Plus the rigid, cast aluminum baskets are magnetically inert for maximum efficiency. It all adds up to superbly stable and accurate stereo imaging that'll pull you further into the soundstage than most other speakers do.

Uniform sound from top to bottom

The Synchrony Two uses a four-driver array made up of three woofers and a tweeter. Unlike other speakers, the tweeter sits just below the top woofer in a unique arrangement that's characteristic of PSB's high-end speakers. Having the tweeter positioned lower along the baffle helps you experience the full sonic range from low to high, whether you're seated or standing. The three woofers are also strategically placed along the full length of the baffle, allowing for more consistent sound dispersion between them.

Woofer

The woofers use lightweight, rigid fine-weave fiberglass cones for exceptionally smooth response.

Tweeter

The tweeter uses a high-flux neodymium magnet to maintain clear, accurate highs, even during dynamic peaks like explosions or cymbal crashes.

Top-notch crossover ensures optimal sound dispersion

PSB's years of design experience and tireless testing at the National Research Council in Canada have led to a superior crossover design. The high-quality components are carefully picked to create the fourth-order crossovers that go into Synchrony speakers. Meticulous engineering ensures minimal driver overlap, with precisely chosen crossover points to maintain proper dispersion. The result is a smooth frequency response over a wide "sweet-spot."

A solid cabinet with a luxurious, real-wood veneer finish

Cabinet cutaway

Extruded aluminum front and back panels hold the curved, seven-layered side panels in place, creating an incredibly rigid, acoustically inert cabinet.

The Synchrony Two's heavy, rigid cabinet helps eliminate vibrations to maintain the speaker's natural sound. The double-walled aluminum front and back cabinet surfaces hold the curved side panels in place. Each side panel is constructed using seven layers of MDF, each one individually laminated to improve the panel's stiffness and absorb sonic energy that might otherwise color the sound. The top and side panels are clad in real wood veneer that's hand selected for its beauty and quality.

Driver Technology

Cone Design: The woofer cones are a laminated sandwich design; each has a fine weave fiberglass layer along with a compressed, felted natural fiber laminate. The result is a rigid cone with added damping properties. The central dustcap offers a second connection to the voice coil to improve bass and midrange control. The inherent distortion resulting from the magnetic field generated by the input signal reacting with the field in the magnetic structure's air gap and the self-induction and impedance that varies with cone movement are addressed using an aluminum shorting ring within the magnet structure, an aluminum phase plug on the pole piece, and a shorted copper turn on top of the pole piece. The aluminum phase plug also mechanically smoothes the response and acts as a heat sink for the voice coil, reducing power compression. The drivers use cast aluminum baskets and rubber surrounds.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium, Ferrofluid cooled dome tweeter has a neodymium motor structure and an aluminum heat sink. The mass (low) and stiffness (high) are optimized for the required wide frequency response.

Crossover Network: The crossover is a 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. Tight tolerances were used when choosing the crossover components; heavy multi-laminated iron cores are used for large value inductors, high gauge wire air core inductors are used for medium and small values, all the capacitors are low loss and film capacitors are used for the midrange and treble frequencies.

Enclosure Design

Cabinet: The cabinet is an integral part of speaker design and has a dramatic effect on the overall sound of a speaker. PSB uses a combination of aluminum and wood in the Synchrony Two's construction. The front baffle and rear panel are made of double wall aluminum extrusions. The aluminum panels are very rigid and precisely machined with contours to preserve the sonic characteristics of the drivers. The side panels are seven layers of 3mm MDF, curved for added stiffness, with a wood veneer exterior. While rigid, MDF also has inherent damping properties to absorb energy that might otherwise color the music. Internally the cabinet has three separate chambers for the three speaker sections, each with its own port on the rear panel.

Port Cover: There are three ports on the rear panel, one for each of the internal chambers. One port cover is included to seal a port (if necessary), thereby changing the bass tuning characteristics of the speaker to correct the interaction with the room. If needed, additional port covers can be obtained from PSB for a nominal fee.

Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The dual binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by a gold-plated jumper. With the jumper removed the Synchrony Two can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Mounting Options

Leveling Feet: The Synchrony One includes two sets of leveling feet; the rubber covered feet are used on a hard surface and add approximately 1/2" to the height of the speaker, the carpet spikes add approximately 1" to the height.
