Fantastic little ball head, works on other tripods, too

Written by Zak Billmeier, Staff Writer - Creative, on 12/16/2013 2:27:00 PM

This little guy has become one of my favorite pieces of camera gear. It's all metal, but it's so small it adds almost no weight to my tripod, and it locks down tight. I have used it with all kinds of cameras, up to and including a medium-format camera that weighs 8 pounds without trouble. I'd say Slik's 6.6 pound rating is on the conservative side.

It has no quick-release plate, you just tighten it onto the bottom of the camera while the ball is loose. There is a protective layer of cork that keeps it from scratching the bottom of your camera.

And although it is meant for Slik tripods, I have removed it and put it on other gear before. Once I even had it on a suction-cup video mount. It'll screw onto anything with a standard 1/4" tripod thread, including probably any tripod you already own.

All told, it's a great little tool, and powerful enough to hold nearly any camera in place.
