Our take on the Hoya NXT UV Filter

by Woody Sherman

Protect your lens while filtering out the ultraviolet rays in outdoor photos that can contribute to haze. The glass is precision-ground and polished, so you won't have surface imperfections that could distort your images. A rigid, low-profile aluminum frame holds the filter steady against the lens.

Overview: Ultraviolet (UV) rays can make outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct. The Hoya NXT HMC UV Filter (HMC-UV) absorbs almost all ranges of UV rays, to give you clearer and sharper pictures with less haze. This multi-purpose, all-around filter is designed specifically for digital cameras, and can be used constantly to protect your expensive lenses. The 3-layer HMC multi-coated filter uses heat-resistant, high-transparency optical glass that is precisely ground and polished for perfect flatness. The precision milled, low-profile aluminum frame will hold up to years of use.

great little (or not-so-little) filter

Simply put, it works! Filtering out UV light is more important for film than for DSLRs, but you buy a UV filter to get a clear filter that protects the front-surface of the lens and its coating, and that absorbs impacts and resists scratches.

I tend to stick with Hoya probably because of familiarity, but you tend to stick with what works. I've never yet had a problem with Hoya, as they've got a pretty good bang-to-buck ratio.

If a dog sticks his wet nose on your camera-lens (or a kid with greasy/sticky fingers), would you rather try cleaning off the front surface of a very expen$ive lens, possibly wearing off more and more of the antireflective coating with each cleaning, or take off a UV filter, clean it at your leisure (even gently using detergent and water and blowing off all the water droplets), and at worst replacing that with a new filter it if gets too beat-up?
It does exactly what it's supposed to. Optically clean, can't tell any distortion whatsoever due to the filter.
Can't think of any.

Good value item

Written By John, Cleveland, oh on Tuesday, June 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I chose this filter because it represented the middle ground on price and I was not disappointed. It is of good build quality and represents a good value.
Thin profile when attached to the lens. Thread machining seems precise.
