About the GoPro HERO

Eric A.

Take the GoPro HERO on your next adventure

I like to get my hands dirty when I travel. I wish I'd had a GoPro HERO a few years back, when I was ziplining through the forest canopy in Belize. I could have maintained my death grip on the harness and still recorded HD video of the scenery whizzing by. The Hero is built into a rugged housing that can withstand bumps, sun, wind, rain and can be submerged down to 131 feet. It's lightweight, and compatible with a variety of GoPro mounts that match well with your favorite outdoor activities. I hope to have one with me next time I decide to taunt gravity.
Keep an eye on the strike zone, analyze your swing, or just enjoy the game with a GoPro HERO.

Get creative

You can always shoot real-time video of your exploits, but sometimes you want to make some artistic choices before you share. The HERO offers Time Lapse mode, so you can snap a 5-megapixel photo every half-second — very useful if you're scuba diving or skiing, and want to keep your hands free while snapping great action shots. GoPro's exclusive SuperView™ offers an expanded wide-angle view that lets you see more of the stunning scenery around you. There's an automatic Low Light mode that helps capture clear images of nighttime forays. Once you've gathered all of the spectacular footage you can, download the free GoPro Studio software and cut together a polished final cut of your adventure.

One button convenience

Missing the perfect shot is a serious drag. The HERO's QuikCapture mode lets you to power on and start recording automatically with the press of a single button. Press once to record video, press and hold for two seconds to capture Time Lapse photos. If you feel the need to remove the camera from its mount and hold it in your hands, just press the quick-release buckle and you're in business. If you're ready for adventures at any time, your camera should be, too.

Let the GoPro HERO take in the scenery while you're busy steering.

Product Research

Features
Mounting Options

Features

Overview: The GoPro Hero (CHDHA-301) is an ultra-compact digital action camera, designed to take HD videos and 5-megapixel still photos in extreme situations. The camera has an integrated clear waterproof housing, and comes with two clip-on surface mounts. A full line of GoPro accessories allow you to mount the camera virtually anywhere.

Optics: The Hero has a fixed focus, f/2.8 ultra wide angle glass lens for sharp image quality.

Video Resolution: The Hero is capable of recording High Definition video in MPEG-4 (H.264) format with mono AAC audio (48kHz sampling rate). All video is captured at an Ultra Wide Field of View (FOV) for the best image stability. SuperView gives you a more immersive field of view with more vertical content (4:3), which is stretched to full-screen 16:9 for playback on your computer or TV. You can set the Video Format from NTSC to PAL whenever you wish to view video on a TV outside of North America. The following video resolution options (with NTSC/PAL frame rates) are available:

  • 1080p (30/25 fps): The highest resolution setting gives you the clearest details.
  • 720p (60/50 fps): Recommended for handheld shots of others, and when slow motion is desired. This high frame rate is excellent for capturing fast-moving objects.
  • 720p SuperView (60/50 fps): The larger point-of-view of SuperView captures more of your own perspective. This is also recommended for body- or gear-mounted shots.

Still Images: The Hero can take 5MP still images at a resolution of 2592 x 1944. You can take photos manually one at a time, or in a burst of 10 photos in 2 seconds (5 fps). A series of photos can also be captured in a time lapse sequence of 0.5-second intervals.

Storage: The Hero has a rear slot for inserting Micro SD memory cards (up to 32 GB). You should use Micro SD cards with a Class 10 or UHS-1 rating for best performance. Brand name memory cards are recommended for maximum reliability in high-vibration activities. No memory is included with the camera.

Battery: The Hero is powered by the built-in rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (3.8V, 1180mAh, 4484mWh). It has a battery life of approximately 2 hours 45 minutes while shooting 1080p video, and 2 hours 30 minutes for 720p video. The battery can be charged by connecting the camera to a computer or other USB charging adapter (5V 1A) using the supplied USB cable. The battery is charged to approximately 80% capacity in 1 hour, or to a full charge in about 2 hours.

Camera Status Screen/LEDs: The small (3/4" diagonal) front panel LCD screen provides camera status indications only. It will indicate the shooting mode, resolution, battery status, and setup menu. The camera has front and rear LEDs will indicate the camera is recording. You can set the LEDs to Both On, Both Off, Front On, or Rear On.

Spot Meter: If you're shooting an outdoor scene from indoors, or a shaded area from a bright sunny area, you can activate the Spot Meter feature for best exposure. Spot Meter automatically sets the exposure based on a single spot in the middle of the image, instead of an average of the entire image.

Upside Down Image: If you need to mount the camera upside down to get the perfect angle for your video or still images, you can set the camera to save the photo upside down so they will appear right side up on your computer or TV.

QuikCapture: The QuikCapture setting lets you quickly turn the camera on and begin capturing video or shoot time lapse photos. With the camera powered off, you can press and release the shutter/select button to begin capturing video, or press and hold the button for two seconds to begin shooting time lapse still photos. QuikCapture is set to On by default.

Connections: The Hero has only one connection, USB (Mini-B 2.0 USB port), for output to a computer for copying files or for charging the battery. If your TV supports USB playback, you can insert the Micro SD card into a card reader, and connect the card reader to the TV for video and photo playback.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: Width=3.007" Height=3.038" Depth=1.965"

  • Weight: 3.9 ounces

Computer Compatibility: The Hero camera is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Mac OS X 10.8 or later.

Mounting Options

Waterproof Housing: The Hero comes with an integrated clear housing that is waterproof to a depth of 131 feet (40 meters). It has two external buttons to allow you to change the camera settings and press the shutter button. The back door of the housing can be removed and replaced with the supplied Skeleton back panel for non-water activities, and to allow more sound to reach the camera's microphone.

Quick Release Mounting: The waterproof housing is mounted to a quick-release buckle that lets you adjust the tilt of the camera. The quick-release slips and locks into either of the supplied mounting bases or the multiple optional mounts. An included locking plug will provide more security to the mount to prevent accidental loss.

Mounting Bases: The package includes a curved-surface and a flat-surface mount, each with industrial-grade adhesive, for mounting the camera to a helmet, vehicle, or other smooth surface.

Optional Mounts: GoPro offers numerous mounts for the Hero camera, including a head strap and chest harness. Other mounts can attach the camera to a bicycle seat post or handlebar, a roll bar, helmet, tripod, or even your dog.
