About the GoPro HERO4 Session

A super HERO in a small package

We've been impressed with the high image quality and sense of style that GoPro cameras bring to on-the-go photography. We weren't sure what the company could do to improve on their iconic line of action video cameras, but now we know: they made the new GoPro HERO4 Session 50% smaller and 40% lighter than previous HERO4 models. That means it will be easier than ever to clip a camera to your helmet, seatbelt, surfboard, etc. and film your next adventure from a unique point of view.

Impressive creative control

The HERO4 Session offers a loaded toolbox for you to discover. Protune™ video settings for ISO limit (sensitivity) and sharpness mean you'll get great-looking results in a wide range of environments. GoPro has taken steps to make sure your video sounds as good as it looks — a built-in dual mic system reduces noise and enhances audio in high-speed or windy environments.

Features

Overview: The GoPro HERO4 Session (CHDHS-101) is the smallest, lightest GoPro yet. This tiny waterproof action camera is designed to take high definition videos and up to 8-megapixel still photos in extreme situations. A simple one-button control powers on the camera and starts recording video or time-lapse photos in seconds. The camera comes with standard and low-profile frames, and a variety of clip-on surface mounts.

Video Resolution: The HERO4 Session is capable of recording Full HD and HD video in MPEG-4 (H.264) format. You can set the camera to record in NTSC (for North America) or PAL (for outside of North America). The following video resolution options are available:

Video Resolution Frame Rates

1440p 30 (25) Ultra Wide 1920 x 1440 Good for advanced users who want to capture a full image and then edit to the desired aspect ratio.

60 (50)
30 (25)
Ultra Wide, Medium 1280 x 720 Great for handheld shots and when slow motion is desired. Optimal for sharing on social media. 720p100 ideal for slow motion.
WVGA 120 (100) Ultra Wide 848 x 480 Good when super slow motion is desired and standard definition is acceptable.

Looping Video: The Looping Video feature lets you record continuously record video, but save only the footage you want. This helps to conserve space on the memory card while you wait for a special moment to take place. If you select a 5-minute interval, the previous 5 minutes are saved when you stop recording. You can also select 20, 60, and 120 minutes, or Max to record until memory card is full before overwriting the content.

Dual Microphones: The camera records the audio with dual built-in microphones: one mounted on the front and the other mounted on the back. When filming in windy conditions or high-speed activities, wind noise can result in poor quality audio. The dual-microphones allow the camera to automatically switch to the mic that's best suited for capturing optimal audio. External microphones are not supported. The camera records audio at a 32kHz sampling rate and AAC compression.

Still Images: The HERO4 Session can take still images at an 8MP (3264 x 2448, Wide FOV) resolution or 5MP photos (2720 x 2040), Medium FOV. You can take still photos as follows:

  • Single: one photo at a time
  • Burst: multiple shots over a set time period:
    • 3 photos, 1 second
    • 5 photos, 1 second
    • 10 photos, 1 second
    • 10 photos, 2 seconds
  • Time Lapse: A series of photos can also be captured in a time lapse sequence at the following intervals: 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds.

Storage: The HERO4 Session has a waterproof door that covers a slot for inserting a Micro SD memory card (up to 64 GB). You should use Micro SD cards with a Class 10 or UHS-I rating for best performance. Brand name memory cards are recommended for maximum reliability during high-vibration activities. No memory is included with the camera.

Wi-Fi + Bluetooth: The camera features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that allows you to wirelessly connect to your smartphone or tablet via the GoPro App or the optional GoPro Smart Remote. The Smart Remote allows you to fully control the camera and change settings, or control multiple GoPro cameras from distances up to 600'.

GoPro App: The GoPro App lets you control your camera remotely with your iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone/tablet. The app lets you see what your camera sees, giving you a live preview for positioning the camera and framing your shots. You can playback your videos, view your photos, browse and delete files on the Micro SD card, and even share them via email, text, and social media sites. The app also gives you instant access to the GoPro Channel to see other videos shot by GoPro cameras, and can even update your camera's software. The app is compatible with iPhone/iPad/iPod touch and requires iOS 7.1 or later. It is also compatible with Android (Version 4.1 and up) and Windows phones (8 and 8.1).

Battery: The HERO4 Session is powered by a built-in rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (3.8V, 1160mAh, 4.4Wh). It has a maximum battery life of approximately 2 hours 5 minutes (1080p, 30 fps, Wi-Fi off). The battery can be charged by connecting the camera to a computer or other USB charging adapter (5V 1A) using the supplied USB cable. The battery is charged to approximately 80% capacity in 1 hour, or to a full charge in about 2 hours.

Auto Low Light: The Auto Low Light feature allows you to quickly transition between well-lit and low-light conditions. When enabled, the camera automatically adjusts the frame rate (fps) according to the lighting conditions for optimal exposures. Auto Low Light is available at 48 fps and higher. It is not available when shooting in WVGA.

Spot Meter: If you're shooting an outdoor scene from indoors, or a shaded area from a bright sunny area, you can activate the Spot Meter feature for best exposure. Spot Meter automatically sets the exposure based on a single spot in the middle of the image, instead of an average of the entire image.

Camera Orientation: The Orientation setting lets you determine if you want your captured video to be upside down or right-side up. You can choose the Auto setting (Auto Image Rotation) which lets the camera automatically select Up or Down, based on the orientation of the camera when recording begins. You can also manually select Up (right-side up) or Down (camera is being used upside down).

Protune: Protune is a feature for advanced users that can result in professional-looking videos. When Protune is enabled, you have more manual control of the exposure, giving you stunning image quality and cinema-like videos. Protune is compatible with professional color correction tools, GoPro software, and other video editing software. Protune is available when shooting in 1440p, 1080p, and 960p60 resolutions and Ultra Wide field-of-view. It is not available for Looping Videos or still photos. The following settings are available in Protune mode:

  • ISO Limit: ISO Limit adjusts the camera's sensitivity in low-light environments, creating a balance between brightness and image noise (degree of graininess in the image). You can choose between 1600 for moderately bright video with moderate image noise, or 400 for darker video in low light with reduced image noise.
  • Sharpness: Sharpness controls the level of detail and contrast in your video. With this feature turned on, the video is moderately sharp. When turned off, the video is softer, with more flexibility during post-production. If you plan to increase the sharpness during editing, the setting should be turned off.

HiLight Tagging: The HERO4 Session lets you mark specific moments in your video during recording or playback with HiLight Tags, making the moments easier to locate. Tags can be added using the camera, the GoPro App, or the optional Smart Remote. During playback, the tags are visible in the GoPro App or GoPro software.

Connections: The HERO4 Session has a Micro USB port for connecting the camera to a computer, or for charging the battery. The port is located behind a waterproof door, above the Micro SD card slot.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: Width=1.498" Height=1.499" Depth=1.433" (without frame)

  • Weight: 2.6 ounces (3.8 ounces in standard frame)

Computer Compatibility: The HERO4 Session camera is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Mac OS X 10.8 or later.

Mounting Options

Mounting Frames: The HERO4 Session comes with two specially designed mounts: a standard frame and a low-profile frame. The frames can be attached to any GoPro mount. You can position the camera with the shutter/select button in either the up or down position. The frames include loops that allow you to tether the frame to the mount to prevent loss during water activities. Camera tethers are sold separately.

Mounting Buckles: The frames fit into standard GoPro mounting buckles. Three buckles are included with the camera, including a new Ball Joint buckle. The Ball Joint buckle lets you rotate the camera 360° and tilt forward and backward, allowing you to change the position of the camera without having to change the mount. Two of the buckles, the Ball Joint and Vertical Mounting buckles, have integrated rubber locking plugs that securely lock them into place in the mount. A white locking plug is included for securing the standard Mounting buckle. All of the buckles use the included Thumbscrew to tighten the frame into the buckle.

Mounting Bases: The package includes a curved-surface and a flat-surface mount, each with industrial-grade adhesive, for mounting the camera to a helmet, vehicle, or other smooth surface.

Optional Mounts: GoPro offers numerous mounts for the HERO4 Session camera, including a head strap and chest harness. Other mounts can attach the camera to a bicycle seat post or handlebar, a roll bar, helmet, tripod, surfboard, or even your dog.
