Our take on the Audioengine A2

by Tara W.
Audioengine

Compact design and clean, powerful sound

If you're like us, a lot of your music listening happens while you're sitting in front of your computer. Audioengine's A2 speakers produce rich, robust sound that breathes life into music and gaming effects without taking up a lot of room on your desktop. Place them on either side of your monitor and the speakers' soundstage will present the performance right in front of you. These little gems actually sound good enough to use in a small bedroom system, too.

Audioengine 2

Kevlar woofer

Surprising build quality

One of the main limitations of typical computer speakers is their harsh, thin sound. That's not what you'll hear from the Audioengine A2s — their custom silk tweeters deliver smooth, open highs. Advanced Kevlar woofers provide tight, punchy mids and bass. The drivers are powered by no-nonsense built-in amplifiers. All components are housed in sturdy wood cabinets with a hand-polished finish.

Back

Connects easily to your computer or iPod®

Hooking up these speakers to your computer is easy. RCA and minijack inputs let you listen to music from your computer or a portable player, like an iPod, or another audio source. The amplifiers for both speakers are built into the left speaker, so you just make a simple, secure connection between the left and right speakers using the gold-plated speaker terminals.

For a wireless connection to your iPod or MP3 player, check out AudioEngine's W2 adapter for iPod.

"My first response to the A2 speakers in action was shock (in a good way) — the speakers are small, my desk setup isn't very wide, yet the sound was unexpectedly expansive."

— Tara, Crutchfield Video Producer and A/V Writer

Features

Full-Range Sound: Each of the Audioengine A2s has two drivers; a 3/4" silk dome tweeter and a 2.75" Kevlar woofer. The slot-ported cabinets offer accurate bass down to 65 Hz (+/-2.0 dB). Audioengine recommends placing the speakers at least 3" from the back wall.

Amplifier: The A2s are powered by a 15-watt RMS x 2 amplifier built into the left speaker. Source components (or wireless adapters) are connected to the left speaker and standard speaker wire connects the two speakers together. With the amplifier built-in, the left speaker is heavier than the right (4 pounds vs. 3 pounds).

Construction: The cabinets are built using 18mm MDF with internal bracing. Internal sound-damping material reduces unwanted reflections inside the cabinet. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished, then tuned and tested together to be sold in matching pairs. Both speakers have high-density foam isolation pads on the bottom for placement flexibility.

Audio Inputs: The A2 has two inputs on the back of the left speaker, one 3.5mm mini-jack and a pair of RCA jacks. There is no input selector switch so both inputs are live simultaneously; if different signals are presented to both inputs, they are mixed together and both are played through the speakers.

Controls and Connections

Left Speaker: All of the A2 system's controls and connections are on the back of the left speaker; the only terminals on the right speaker are the screw post speaker level inputs for connection to the left speaker's corresponding outputs:

  • Power/Volume: rotary knob serves as the on/off switch and controls the system's output volume
  • Power Input: proprietary input for use with the included DC power supply
  • Speaker Output: screw post output for right speaker
  • Input A: stereo RCA jacks
  • Input B: 3.5mm stereo mini-jack

Specifications

Power Output: 15 watts RMS per speaker (30 watts peak)

Frequency Response: 65 Hz - 22 kHz +/-2.0 dB

THD: 0.05% at all power settings

Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 95dB

Input Impedance: 10 kΩ unbalanced

Small but spacious

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 12/28/2011 10:34:00 AM

When I took the A2s out of their box, the first thing that struck me was just how compact they were. Although the speakers had a substantial heft to them, they weren't too heavy. They were just solidly built. I only had an opportunity to make a very simple connection. I ran a cable from the headphone jack of the Lab station's desktop to the A2s and listened to some of my Pandora channels. The A2s delivered a highly detailed sound (surprisingly so, considering the connection and the source). When I had the speakers oriented properly, they created a spacious soundfield that fully enveloped me in the workspace. It's a great combination for desktop speakers -- small footprint, big sound.

my adio engine a2s

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

these compact little dynamos pack an amazing punch. i can hear clearly individual instruments when listening to these blond bombshells. a fairly good bass punch. The a2's are so tough that they would probably survive a tornado. I am definitely pleased.
Pros:
what i said above in comments.
Cons:
i would appreciate wire mesh speaker grilles over the speakers and a volume control on the side, not the back.

Great sound

Written By Brent, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, November 18, 2013

I'm very pleased with these speakers. I connect them to a HiFiMAN HM-101 digital to analog converter and then to my laptop for playing my iTunes library in the apartment. I recently sold my house and downsized to this smaller place, and these speakers replaced a 100-watt receiver/speakers/sub system. They produce a quality sound across the spectrum and fill the listening area; I boosted the bass response within the Windows sound driver to hear more bass. And my wife loves that they are small and unobtrusive.
Pros:
Clear sound, good bass. Small, attractive.
Cons:
None.

Not bad

Nice looking speakers that are packaged much nicer than expected in little drawstring bags. Although you'll probably never use them again, it points out that this is a quality product and they have put a lot of effort into it. As for the sound, surprisingly good. They have plenty of power for a desktop system and they have much more bass than your usual computer speaker. You will need to either raise them to ear level, or tilt them back so the tweeters fire at your ears, otherwise they can sound dull. The bass can be a bit boomy, but I imagine if I raised them off the desk with a stand that would improve.

Would Definitely Purchase Again!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was skeptical at first, but upon receiving and installing these monitors, I was totally a believer. These speakers have changed in tone over the course of 30+ hours of listening, but they have actually mellowed out beautifully at the lower-end of the sound spectrum. I would definitely recommend picking up a pair and listening to them for 20+ hours before making your final judgement.
Pros:
Excellent sound quality Unbelievable craftsmanship
Cons:
Price might turn off some people Accessories are quite pricey as well

Excellent and stylish speakers

Great sounding speakers. Look really good next on my white desk next to the Mac. I added the D1 DAC sounds even better and adds volume control at the front and head set amp.
Pros:
Great sound good looks. These really rock when I crank them up. I have to watch the sound level because I can have it loud with no distortion and not realize just how loud they are playing.
Cons:
No head phone jack and volume control on the back of the speaker. The D1 DAC took care of both those issues.

Absolutely worth the money.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched long and hard trying to find a quality set of computer speakers, and couldn't get away from the A2s. I struggled to find a negative review, and now I know why. I have them hooked up to my Audioengine D1 DAC, playing mostly 320 MPEG or 254 AAC, and WOW! I never thought my music could sound so good. When I first plugged them in, I couldn't believe the shape of the sound. I could hear the music surrounding me, unlike I've ever experienced from 2 speakers. Unfortunately, the quality of the sound decreases when you walk away from your desk, but when you're sitting in front of these speakers, you will be blown away by the warmth of the midranges, crispness of the highs, and punchiness of the bass. Truly, for $200, you aren't going to find better sound.

Note: They also sound great plugged straight into the stereo jack of my computer, but the DAC makes a huge difference if you have some extra money to put down for it.
Pros:
Great sound, excellent value
Cons:
Doesn't fill a room with quality sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! These are fantastic little speakers. Great range, not too heavy in any direction, wonderful sound reproduction- orchestral and opera, piano and vocals, electronica, a$$ out rock and roll- everything sounded excellent. Love the variety of hookups on the back. Packing quite a wallup for such a small size. The white is pretty sexy, too. Have these plugged into a MacBook Pro and it rivals our home theater for small room, full sound. Haven't even taken it above 1/2 volume yet- powerful!!! Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for great sound from their computer setup.
Pros:
Multiple hookups, powerful sound, small size, very attractive.
Cons:
Wires- but hey, most of the great systems still have them.

Best lower price powered speakers on the planet

Written By Louis, Boston, MA on Sunday, July 14, 2013

After putting off the purchase for a number of weeks I decided to give in and ship a pair of the lauded A2's to my office. After 2 days of use all I can say is, wow - how did I get along without these for all this time. There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said by prior reviewers so I'll just sum it up like this: If you're looking for compact computer speakers, buy these. If you have extra room on your desk, buy the A5+ (another co-worker just purchased them - MIND blowing for their size). The 1 and 2 star reviews on these are likely written by users who never even gave them a fighting chance. Every time I press play, a Cheshire grin forms across my face. These are great little speakers.
Pros:
Amazing sound quality from tiny speakers, tweeters that rival those found in speakers twice the price
Cons:
Weak bass, but this is to be expected

These speakers are easy to set up, and they put out solid sound for listening in my home office. I read a lot of reviews, here and at other sites, from ordinary people and those who consider themselves connoisseurs of high quality audio, and I'm glad that I followed the advice to get these speakers. They're a great value for the price.

Disappointing

Written By Mike L., San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday, May 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A plus for these speakers is that they have low distortion at all reasonable volume levels. But I returned them because of an uneven frequency response that made them sound veiled, murky and at times muddy. The problem: a noticeable hump in the upper bass/lower midrange, coupled with a dip in the upper midrange/lower treble. Violins and brass missed that shine and sparkle that gives life to music. Kickdrums and other instruments at the lower end sounded muddy.

I thought this might be a result of them sitting atop my wooden desk (though I bought the speaker stands that fit them). But I tried surrounding them with sound absorbent material and it reduced the bass muddiness only a small amount. Also, with a 2.75" "woofer," the A2 os not really producing real bass, so I wondered if the internal electronics were boosting the bass too much on purpose.

I returned the Audioengine A2s, which I'm giving three stars because they have high build quality, low distortion, and would probably produce suitable sound for some other customers.
Pros:
Low distortion; high build quality;
Cons:
Unfortunate humps and dips in frequency response, as noted above; inconvenient location of volume control; a bit large for desktop use unless you have a large desk.

Excellent Little Speakers

Written By MarkusBrooklyn, Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Excellent speakers. I am not an audiophile, but their sound is wonderful for my purposes: filling a small room (400sf) with not too loud sound (apartment building). I hook them up to iPod & MacbookAir. The speakers are handsome, solid, and very well built. Price - performance comparison unparalleled.

Small, unassuming wonder

Written By Michael, Walnut Creek, CA on Friday, March 22, 2013

The A2s are quite the plain unassuming speaker to the eye. So it's with some disbelief when hooked up to a clean, clear music source, the fullness of sound that emanates from these little boxes feels extraordinary. They sound very close to the much, much larger A5s.

After getting a bit more used to them, there are some flaws. The bass is a bit thick and indistinct (although that it has any in significant amounts from a 2.75" woofer is amazing). The treble can feel a little harsh at times, which isn't expected from a silk dome. (Getting the optional stands and aiming them over your ear level helps a lot.) The plain looks and lack of a grille make them look like generic sound equipment, rather something with a bit more design.

But for the price and size, it's hard to dismiss the musical capability the speaker has to offer. If you're looking for booming bass to go with the shotgun blasts of a FPS, this isn't what you're looking for. But if you enjoy listening to music and need something for a cramped area, the A2's will do the job admirably. On the other hand, if your budget affords it, you can just add a sub and really fill out that low end for explosive gaming effects.
Pros:
- Small. - Can play pretty loud in a small space. - Actually sounds good enough to be a hi-fi(ish) speaker, and not a computer accessory. - Can set them against the wall without ill effect, as they are front ported, as opposed to rear-ported speakers.
Cons:
- Very plain looks. - Not strong enough to fill a medium or large sized room, if that's your thing. - Bass is a bit thick and muddy, doesn't go down to the lowest levels needed for explosive effects. (read--get a sub and set the crossover)

Excellent speakers for music

Written By Evan K, LAs Vegas Nv on Friday, March 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading many reviews on these speakers I decided to give them a try. Although they will never be mistaken for full size speakers, they blew me away with the sound these little speakers produced. They had nice crisp highs and midrange. The lows are not boomy but definitely present. These are not speakers if you want booming bass to rattle windows. I bought them to listen to music on my laptop. I have a large collection of vinyl that i am transferring to my laptop and I wanted speakers that would please me without breaking the bank. For the price and the sound I dont think I could make a better investment.
Pros:
full sound, powerful but small
Cons:
on off switch on back of speaker

Wha?? Did I just time warp to Awesomeland???

Written By Neek, Los Angeles on Friday, March 01, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So, I just got my A2's in the mail today, and they just blew me away! These little guys are only little in stature, as their sound is absolutely incredible. They're balanced, clean, and crisp. I Harlem Shake'd so hard I thought my girlfriend was going to leave me! In all seriousness, these speakers are such a surprise. Every review that says "they're small, but sound big" is 100% true. Of course, initial sound will be a bit harsh (if I can call it "harsh") without proper break in, however, these speakers are a true beginners audiophile must. The build quality is impeccable, the white finish is superb, and the sound is second to none. I still can't believe just how deep the tonal qualities run.... crisp highs, low tight bass response, musical detail... these are just so impressive. I can't wait to purchase the Audioengine D1 DAC to heighten the experience further.
Pros:
Everything! Build quality, sound, ease of setup, price point, impressiveness (is that even a word?)
Cons:
As the other reviewers said, I don't know why they didn't package the stands with the A2's, but whatever.... they're worth it.

Great but they need a little help.

Written By Big Daddy, Katy, TX on Friday, January 18, 2013

These speakers are very well build. You can tell right away when you put your hand on them; solid and heavy. Very nice highs and mids and they beg to be turned-up. However, no matter what any one says, you WILL need a sub to balance-out the sound reproduction. Once the sub is in-place you'll love them even more.
Pros:
Construction and sound clarity unmatched for this price level. White color matches my Mac set-up.
Cons:
No power on/off light. Wife and I get into arguments ; )

great sound!

Written By kurt, bridgewater, va on Thursday, January 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Right out of the box you can tell they are built with quality. Everything, most importantly the speakers, come in nice little felt baggies to keep them from being banged up. The speakers are surprisingly heavy. I have the A2s plugged directly into my laptop on my desk about 2.5 feet from my ears. All the required cords came in the box and the setup was simple.

I like the clean and detailed sound of the A2s. Some folks might not appreciate the bass-light monitor sound, but that is how I enjoy listening to my music. Listening to Mumford & Sons right now. Robert Plant's 'Ship of Fools' is a good test for these puppies.
Pros:
Quality build. Detailed clean sound.
Cons:
None yet.

Audioengine A2

Written By RussR, Cincinnati on Saturday, January 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the A2s and the Polk woofer PSW125 (OK, a lil much of a woofer for my bedroom/computer center). The A2s by themselves, lacked bass, but with the woofer, the system sounds great. The A2s are much, much better than the Panasonic bookshelf system I was using for audio in the high and mid range. Then added the woofer and it is just what I was looking for. They are relatively small, makes them easy to position. The bookshelf system has been banished to the basement, and yeah, my wife has come in to tell me to turn it down.
Pros:
Great sound, great packing, great finish quality.
Cons:
Lack bass by themselves, but this is expected from a small speaker.

Spectacular Near Field Stereo at a Bargain Price!

Written By John B, Dallas on Thursday, January 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to get some decent speakers for my desk so I did some research and narrowed the choice down to these Audioengine A2s and some competing speakers at over twice the price. Both were very well reviewed. Picked the Audioengine A2s and ordered from Crutchfield to take advantage of Crutchfield's terrific service, lifetime technical support and trustworthy problem solving if a problem ever occurs. Glad I made these choices!

I got the A2s and unpacked them, impressed with the bank vault luxury packing, soft sleeves over all components and ease of opening. Instructions were clear and it took about five minutes to set up the A2s on the custom A2 stands, attached only to power and the headphone output on my MacBook Pro. I positioned the speakers on either side of an Apple 27" monitor, toed in towards my head in my normal working position. I adjusted the volume per recommendations and started a couple of normal resolution iTunes playbacks. Wowza! Right out of the box with no break in these mighty little speakers amazed me with their terrific near field stereo, resolution and clarity. Low resolution MP3s and iTunes cuts suddenly blossomed. I ran through a variety of types of music and vocals, from MP3 to higher resolution. Everything sounded to me like I was sitting in a pro mixing studio with high end Genelecs or JBL active speakers (ten times the price of the A2s) running in a well balanced setup. I cannot imagine a better choice for a desk top or small room.
Pros:
Crystal clear detail, rich tone, decent bass, high end sound and build quality-audiophile near field listening. And, an unbelievable bargain! Crutchfield support and shipping.
Cons:
Not really a con, but I recommend adding the inexpensive A2 speaker stands-probably Audioengine should include them in the box. The speakers sitting on the desktop were great, but when placed on the stands they went to "amazing." The stands really do make that much difference for close listening.

Very satisfied with these speakers

Written By sdc30161, Rome GA on Saturday, December 08, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price, these are awesome little speakers, very detailed with an exceptional sound stage. I have them sitting on the recommended stands, attached to my new iMac (late 2012 model) via the Audioengine D1, and I am very satisfied with the sound. They look terrific sitting next to the monitor, too. I have about $3,500 worth of speakers in my living room for home theater, and while these won't produce the room-rattling sound of my two floor-standing stereo speakers, they are just perfect for my desktop. I stream my music through MOG, which has a much higher bit-rate than other streaming services and iTunes, so that may be a consideration too: always consider the source of your music.

The build quality appears exceptional. I recommend these without hesitation.
Pros:
Sound, price, quality
Cons:
I can't think of any

For anyone looking to replace their PC speakers with something with a little more punch, you can;t miss with the A2s. You can really crank up the volume with these guys, and despite their diminutive size, their sound can fill the room easily. I would recommend them without hesitation. Don't let their size fool you.

PRODUCT WAS RETURNED

Written By LesS, Mt. Shasta,CA on Saturday, November 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product arrived very well packaged. Speakers were quality made--heavy wood with nice black finish, wiring had gold connectors, set-up was straightforward and flawless. All signs of a satisfactory purchase! These do have their own amplifiers, so I jacked them into my Macbook Pro. Unfortunately, the highs were not crisp and the overall sound was somewhat muddy. I was suprised that my original low-cost speakers surpassed them. Disappointed, I reluctantly packed them up and sent them back. I recommend previewing speakers in person before you buy, thus saving yourself the disappointment, work in repackaging and the return shipping charge!
Pros:
Well packaged/protected Nice looking, good quality appearance Reasonable price
Cons:
Mediocre sound quality no provision to adjust base/trebel or "tone"

Great small speakers!

Written By Dwight, Laramie, WY on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been using a pair of Bose Companioin 2 speakers but these AudioEngine A2 speakers blow them away. I put on a nice claen live recording and it sounds like the band is actually in the room. Much better than the typical Bose sound. The only think I would like is the same as most of the other reviewers...speaker grills.

Also don't be afraid to save some money by buying the open box items...this is my second set of speakers and they don't have a scratch on them. The other set is a floor standing pair of Polk Tsi400's and they only had a very small nick on the rear of each speaker.

Ridiculously Awesome are the A2's!

Written By Just Steve, Hollywood FL on Saturday, October 20, 2012

THESE SPEAKERS ROCK!! I am amazed at the sound that comes out of speakers ONLY 4 inches wide and 6 1/2 inches tall. Amazing! The A2's are the without question the best computer/small room speakers on the market. I read every review i could find before buying these superb mini speakers. If you want the best sound possible in a mini speaker - that looks so cool on your desk - buy these A2's. I am amazed. Worth more than the price.
Pros:
Small, ultra cool design, flawless performance vs size, BIG full sound.
Cons:
None.

These speaker replaced a Monsoon system consisting of two front speakers and a subwoofer. I am very satisfied with these speakers because I am more interested a clear sound without a booming base. These speakers meet my goals and are beautiful on my desktop
Pros:
Clarity of sound throughout the entire range. Beautiful in appearance, and look terrific on my desk
Cons:
None for me, but if you are looking for a system with booming base, you should look for a system with a subwoofer.

Audioengine A2

Written By Michael, Daytona Beach, FL on Tuesday, August 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These tiny speakers proved to be the ideal complement to the Audioengine Aadapter Kit which I had purchased. Both my occasional tables, situated on either side of the main living-room sofa, had little room available as they already accommodated my Yamaha rear speakers as well as two matching and sizeable table lamps. These new speakers filled in the remaining space exactly as I had hoped they would. Now, by courtesy of BBC Radio and the Internet, I have listened to talks, debates, poetry, short stories, dramatizations of literary classics, lots of classical music and some jazz - all delivered with that crisp, limpid sound quality which I had vaguely hoped for but which has exceeded all my expectations.
Pros:
Compact, aesthetically pleasing, and with a delightful sound quality.
Cons:
The larger versions may produce even better sound again for those audiophile perfectionists who demand it, but I just did not have the space to accommodate them.

Small Package, Great Speakers

Written By DSW, Warner Robins, GA on Tuesday, June 19, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was impressed as soon as I opened them. They are very heavy for their size, and the attention to detail is amazing. Bought them for my daughter, to replace a cheap boombox, and she uses her Ipod/phone to play music. They are very powerful for their size, and after break-in, have gotten even better. These are worth the money!
Pros:
An amazing speaker made with high end parts, with an attention to detail not seen often enough.
Cons:
You have to turn the knob off to shut off completely, maybe hard to notice if not. Because they are dead silent when nothing is playing, no static whatsoever.

Great speakers

Written By dcb, Boston on Sunday, March 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought a new 27" imac and was looking for a good set of speakers. I ended up buying the 3 on my list and compared them. I tried Bose Companion 20, Audyssey Lower East Side and these Audioengine A2's. I ended up keeping these and returning the rest. The sound quality is totally awesome on these. Very rich, warm sound with plenty of power. They are very high quality and the packaging was impressive. In comparison, the BOSE were ok but totally overpriced and not nearly as good. The Audysseys LES were really nice. I liked them a lot sound-wise but ended up liking the A2's better. The reason was because the LES were a bit less powerful and the auto standby mode was driving me crazy. After 15 minutes of inactivity, they would go into standby mode and would have to be constantly turning them on. The Audioengine A2's had a great standby mode that automatically went into sleep to conserve energy and then automatically turned back on when the signal came in. So, I never have to turn them on or off they are just on all the time in standby mode when I'm not playing music. I use my keyboard controls to adjust the volume. Perfect. I love these and would recommend the A2's to anybody.
Pros:
sound quality small size great build quality and packaging
Cons:
exposed with no covers. I'm a bit nervous one of my kids is going to push in the tweeter. Hopefully that won't happen. I had to buy the $29 stands for them...should be integrated or come with them for free. (these two issues are the only reason they didn't get a 5 star. I wish I could have given them a 4.5.)

Pretty good sound!

Written By BillG, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, February 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think the sound of these little guys is pretty good. Frankly, my expectations were set pretty darn high based on the reviews I read online. First thing I did after connecting to my Macbook Pro was to play a high definition song from HDTracks.com. This is a song I have heard a thousand times and know what is sounds like. The little stands do a great job of pointing the tweeters toward me instead of at my belly. They are near field, around 18-20 inches away. The first impression was that the voice was nasally, and the bass a little bloated. The certainly are much better than the various Sat/Sub setups I own because their is no hole between the drivers. They do sound pretty darn good but my expectations was too high. When compared to a outboard D/A (the Pure) connected into an AV receiver and my old Monitor Audio's, it's no comparison. That said, I am not unhappy. One that did jump out is the nice soundfield it created. Any video, training video, conference calls, and other PC related audio and video was crystal clear with the dialog sounding as if it came straight from the center of the screen (ghost center image). This is a good indicator of L/R soundfield creation. I do have them placed equidistant from my head.
Pros:
good near field monitors, nice soundstage.
Cons:
voice a little nasally, base a little bloated. bass is rolled off but what can you expect from a 4" woofer?

I was searching for a new sound system for my computer when I stumbled across the A2's. So researching any info that was available good or bad I came to the conclusion that the A2's had won out over other brands. This was the right choice. William Shakespeare once said "If music is the fruit of life then play on" ! Audio Engine must of had the same idea. These little speakers rock!
Pros:
After the 40 to 50 hour break in period, they sound even better
Cons:
none so far

A Good Decision

Written By TxJeepers, Pearland, TX on Saturday, December 31, 2011

At first I had purchased a set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 computer speakers. Set them up and had a serious distortion issue with them that I could not resolve. So I had to take them back to the place of purchase. This gave me a bad feeling about them. I started to look around some more and came across a number of sites where people were praising these. After much research, I decided to give them a try and it was easy to make the buy from Crutchfield as I always have a good experience when buying from them. I purchased them along with the little desktop stands. I've got them setup perfectly for desk and the first thing I noticed was an incredible sound stage. I had to quickly get out my old IASCA test CD and play a couple tracks off of it. All I can say is wow, these speakers sound awesome. For the volume that I listen to music and play computer games the bass is ample. Not the low end of a 2.1 system, but I say enough to satisfy. These little speakers sound good. I am happy with my purchase.
Pros:
Small. Simple. Incredible sound.
Cons:
None yet.

Big Sound, Small Package

Written By Drew, Laguna Hills, CA on Thursday, November 17, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just received the speakers today and couldn't wait to get them set up. They are small - just the right size for my cramped desk though. I was skeptical of the reviews when I was considering them. I kept vacillating between the A2's and the A5's, but it came down to size. They needed to fit nicely on my desk and not dominate it. So I reluctantly went with the A2's. I thought people may have been exaggerating the speaker's performance. I mean come on, a 2-3/4" Kevlar mid/woofer and 3/4" silk dome tweeter! Not enough oomph, right? After I ordered them my buyer's remorse kicked in and I went searching the internet looking for bad reviews. I couldn't find any. In fact the biggest audio snobs were praising them. So I had to wait and see for myself. Once I hooked everything up, including the nice little Nu Force DAC I recently got from Crutchfield, it was love at first sound. It blows away any speaker system I've ever hooked up to my PC. If you're on the fence, click the order button. You won't regret it.

I was a little skeptical about all of the hype, but these little babies deliver! Before they arrived I had planned on adding the sub. I still may, but they have plenty of nice mid bass on their own. I have these running on an Apple Airport in the master bedroom, controlled with my iPhone 4. Very nice vocals and not harsh at all at reasonable listening levels. They do take some running in, so you'll want to break them in a bit.

Amazing sound when set up right...

Written By Jim in NH, Bedford, NH on Sunday, August 21, 2011

I recently upgraded my desktop PC and decided it was time to get some decent speakers. After reading the reviews of the Audioengine 2 speakers, I figured they would fit the bill - a small speaker that won't take up a lot of room yet provide excellent music reproduction.

I have the A2s set up with a NuForce u-DAC2 and perhaps most interestingly, a Polk Audio PSW125 subwoofer that was included free with a recent purchase of a set of Polk Audio TSi400 floor standing speakers from Crutchfield. Since I use the TSi400s with a SVS subwoofer, the PSW125 was sitting in the box unused.

Well, needless to say, the Audioengine 2 speakers in combination with the Polk PSW125 sub, fed a clean signal through the u-DAC2 with lossless files is so far beyond "computer speaker sound" that it almost seems an insult to call them computer speakers. I have not tried the A2s set up any other way, but as-is should satisfy anyone looking for high quality sound from their PC.

Finally, kudos to Crutchfield for their excellent servive. I have been buying from them for years and they always deliver beyond expectation.

Audioengine A2

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers totally rock. These should not be compared to standard Computer speakers found at other retailers. These are high quality speakers and are better compared to standard stereo bookshelf speakers. The sound is great and for me the bass is plenty. I replace a set of M-Audio M-30s with these and these blow them away. Again, sound is just incredible. The only reason did not give it full 5 stars is due to price. I think these should be about $50 cheaper. However am more than happy with it. Big bonus is the 3yr warranty. My M-Audio failed at just over a year old. These provide big sound from in a small package. Totally recommended.

I had no idea that such good computer speakers could be purchased at such a reasonable price. I have only tested them at this point. I will be going in the hospital for a month and I wanted to have good music to listen to. I have set these speakers up to work wirelessly from my laptop using Audioengine wireless equipment. I ordered them one day and had them the next. Can't beat that for service and I have been ordering from Crutchfield for 21 years.

Great improvement over PC speakers

Written By jtanewport, Rancho Mirage, CA on Thursday, June 09, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers as a replacement for very ordinary IBM acessory speakers which had virutally no bass and high, audble distortion. Much better frequency response, and they show that distortion is often in the online audio sources, not the speakers (couldn't tell with the previous ones). In a previous life, I did audio engineering and some location recording work, to put my comments in perspective. I am quite satisfied for casual background listening through my computer. It would be nice if they had a balance control, but this is not a big shortcoming. Considering the price vs. perfromance, I think they are a good buy.

Excellent sound and a great value

Written By Alex W, The Vast Unknown on Saturday, May 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I broke my own rule and bought the Audioengine A2's, without having listened to them, based on the excellent reviews I've read. I have them attached to a music client and a TV in our exercise room. I am very pleased with the sound they produce. The A2's are well balanced and accurate to my ear. They image well and have excellent low-frequency output for a speaker their size. They are an excellent value as well.

The A2's do a fine job with the audio output from a sound card, but upgrading to a better quality DAC is worth the expense. It really "lit up" the A2's in my application.

I am glad Crutchfield is finally carrying other great products like NAD, Marantz,
and AudioEngine. These AE A2,s make excellent additions for your laptop or
desktop computer. They are even powerful enough for a bedroom or office stereo
set. Just hook up a double ended 3.5mm cable from your iPod or mobile phone
or use the L/R stereo inputs from say your tv or CD player and listen to the
amazing sound quality these little guys can reproduce.

Happy Crutchfield customer since 2001.

Simply Incredible

Written By DustinW, Waco TX on Sunday, February 20, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The A2's are a quality speaker set with incredible sound. I actually purchased
them to be used as TV speakers as we all know the speakers in flat screens are
quite wimpy. While this is not the intended use, it works significantly better
than expected. Obviously the sorround sound effect is not there, but the sound
is clear and room filling. You just can't go wrong with these little guys!
Pros: wife loves the look, no additional remote controls, no huge power sucking
amp or subwoofer, and we can actually watch a movie when the kids are in bed
without worrying if we are going to wake them up. If you want excellent sound
with a simplistic look then this is the speaker for you.

Best in class speakers for sure

Written By Myles, Denver, PA on Wednesday, November 03, 2010

After reading quite a few good reviews for these speakers, I finally decided to go for the
purchase and ordered them from Crutchfield. To start, I ordered them yesterday... and
here they are on my desk the next day! For that, I applaud Crutchfield on their speedy
service.

As far as sound, their bass is extremely tight and well controlled, and speaking of bass,
I must say that these little guys put out much more bass than I expected. As of now, I
have the bass tones on my equilizer turned down from flat, very impressive! Quite
frankly, speakers of this size shouldn't be allowed to have such dynamic bass!

As far as the overall sound quality (Not that bass is unimportant), I'm quite pleased with
the clearity and definition of what I'm hearing right now. The trebles are quite clear and
seem to float off of the tweeters.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with everything about these speakers. The only con I can think
of is the fact that they have no speaker grills to protect the drivers from a curious cat...
Other than that though, they're everything I hoped for.

Pros:
Great, Dynamic bass
Awesome build quality
Standard speaker cable connects the two speakers, CUSTOM LENGTH!!
Overall clearity is great

Cons:
Takes a bit to figure out how to set a good equilizer for these speakers
No speaker grills = little protection for the drivers
