Or pair them with a digital-to-analog converter for a computer audio system that brings out the subtle nuances in your music.

Smart, stylish design

The A5+'s custom silk tweeters deliver smooth, open highs. Advanced Kevlar woofers provide tight, punchy mids and bass. The drivers are powered by no-nonsense built-in amplifiers. All components are housed in sturdy wood cabinets with a hand-polished finish.

Easy connections and control

Convenient connections built into the back of one speaker make it easy to hook up devices or components. A USB power output lets you charge your smartphone, and a minijack input accepts the audio signal from its headphone jack. A rear RCA input lets you connect another audio source. Both channels of amplification are built into the left speaker, so you just make a simple, secure connection between the left and right speakers using the gold-plated speaker terminals. An included remote control makes it easy to adjust the volume, even when you're sitting across the room.

For a wireless connection to your Bluetooth®-enabled mobile device, check out AudioEngine's B1 Bluetooth adapter.

Audio Features

Overview: Audioengine 5+ (A5+) Premium Powered Speakers deliver audiophile-quality sound from your digital audio player, computer, TV, or any other audio component for great stereo sound in any room. The A5+ offers superior stereo separation & incredible imaging from a pair of compact powered speakers.

Two-Way Speaker System: Each of the Audioengine 5+ has two drivers; a 3/4" silk dome tweeter & a 5" Kevlar woofer. The A5+ provides a real, natural sound; very near to the originally-recorded music. The A5+ has a frequency response of 50Hz to 22,000Hz (+/-1.5dB)

  • Silk Dome Tweeters: Audioengine uses audiophile-quality, ferro-fluid cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power & the edge-driven design gives very smooth response.
  • Kevlar Woofers: The woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. Kevlar is very strong, which means that the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels.

Built-in Amplifier: The A5+ is powered by a 50-watt RMS x 2ch amplifier (SNR: >94dB, THD: <0.05%), built into the left speaker. The built-in power amplifier saves space & eliminates the need to connect Audioengine 5+ to a stereo receiver or external power amp. Simply plug the left speaker into an AC outlet & connect the included speaker wire from the left to right speaker. All internal components of the A5+ are tuned together, providing a more efficient system requiring less power than passive speakers & amplifiers.

Note: With the amplifier built-in, the left speaker is heavier than the right (15.4 pounds vs. 9.6 pounds)

Toroidal Transformers: Power transformers are a large contributor to the overall audio performance, especially in the low end (bass response). Audioengine uses gapless core toroidal transformers which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, directly translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard, lower-cost "EI" transformers and also generate less heat.

Break-in Period: The speaker will sound great out of the box & will get better over time. No need to do anything else, but listen to them. Do give them at least 30-50 hours of break-in time before doing any critical listening.

Enclosure Design.

Construction: The cabinets are built using 1" MDF with internal bracing. Internal sound-damping material reduces unwanted reflections inside the cabinet. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished, then tuned & tested together to be sold in matching pairs.

Bass Reflex Cabinet: One of the reasons the Audioengine 5+ has such great bass response for a compact speaker is the design of the rear bass port on each speaker. The rear bass ports are specifically shaped and have been precisely calculated. The result is incredible low end with minimal audible air turbulence, so you can use the Audioengine 5+ speakers with or without a separate subwoofer.

No Grilles:  The speaker materials & construction are robust & extremely durable, so speaker grilles aren't needed.

Colors: The Audioengine 5+ is available in a Satin Black, Hi-Gloss White, or Solid Carbonized Bamboo finish.

Controls & Connections

Controls: The Audioengine 5+ features a rotary volume knob, power switch, and includes an IR remote control.

  • Volume: A front-panel rotary knob on the left speaker's front-panel controls the system's output volume.
  • Power Switch: An on/off power switch is located on the rear-panel of the left speaker for the built-in amplifier.
  • Remote: An IR remote control is provided for wireless operation of the A5+ powered speaker system. The remote control includes Volume up/down, Mute, and Sleep (power saving) mode functions.

Connections: Most of the A5+ system's connections are on the left speaker; the only terminals on the right speaker are the binding-post speaker level inputs for connection to the left speaker's corresponding outputs.

  • Audio Inputs: The A5+ has two stereo audio inputs on the rear-panel of left speaker. The A5+ is fitted with a 3.5mm stereo minijack input & a stereo RCA input. There is no input selector switch, so both inputs are live simultaneously; if different signals are presented to both inputs, they are mixed together & both are played through the speakers.
  • Binding Posts: Each speaker is equipped with a set of gold-plated 5-way binding post speaker terminals to connect the two speakers to one another.
  • Variable Output: The A5+ includes a variable preamp audio output so you can connect a subwoofer, other Audioengine powered speaker, or an Audioengine wireless adapter to daisy-chaining music to other system around the house. This output is variable (adjustable) so the volume level can be controlled from the A5+ front-panel or remote control.
  • USB Port: On the rear-panel of the left speaker there is a powered USB type-A output (5V/500mA). Its purpose is only to power or charge a USB bus-powered device; for example it will charge an iPod, but not control the iPod, & the audio signal is not transferred through the USB port.

Note: Because the Audioengine 5+ speaker system includes built-in power amplifiers, do not connect the speaker terminals to the speaker outputs of a separate stereo receiver or amplifier.

Optional Accessories: Audioengine offers wireless adapters (772W3, sold separately) that can be powered using the speaker's USB port. The W3 includes a Sender (transmitter) & Receiver; the system is designed to deliver an audio signal wirelessly between your source component & the A5+ power speaker.

Mounting Options

Placement: For the best soundstage & imaging, the speaker should be equidistant from the side walls & and a different distance from rear walls. Both speakers should also be equidistant from your primary listening position (and at least 6' apart). Tweeters should be at approximately eye-level in your most frequent listening locations. For the best bass response, Audioengine recommend at least 6" of clearance between the rear of the speakers and the wall behind them.

High Density Foam Isolation Pad: Both speakers have a high-density foam isolation pad on the bottom for placement flexibility.

1/4"-20 Threaded Insert: Threaded 1/4-20 brass inserts are included on the bottom each speaker cabinet to provide the ability to attach the speaker to free-standing floor stands. These inserts, however, are not designed to support the full weight of the speakers and therefore should not be used with single-point wall or ceiling mounts.

Video Shielded: Both drivers (woofer & tweeter) are directly video shielded & allow you to place the speakers within a few inches of a video monitor. This shielding also offers protection for hard-drive digital music players.

It depends on how you are using them. Studio monitors, computer speakers with a DAC and Subwoofer, etc. You can just call Tech support and they can answer your specific question by need. They are very knowledgeable and Professional! I have 2 pairs from Crutchfield and they sound great for multiple applications.

I have never used a mixer. I use a dac from my computer thru the RCA input. I use a phone thru the aux in. I have used a CD player thru the RCA input. No problem with those apps, but call Cruthfield, they can tell you for sure.

Yes, it is but, I highly recommend a powered Sub and a Great DAC if, you want "excellent" sound! I forgot just how GREAT Stereo can sound with all these new surround formats but, Stereo when done right kicks a$$ still to this day! (especially for music)

I connected to my tv, it couldn't have been easier. A PC Has to be easy as well

It is very easy to connect these speakers to the computer. I have taken the cable that comes with the speakers and connected one end with the stereo mini-jack to the computer sound out-put and the other end to the jack on the left Audioengine speaker. That's it! I know that there is another option, but this works fine for me. The sound is really great.
francis j  Feb 24, 2014

I used these with the DAC which was super easy, the DAC just plugs into a USB port, the speakers plug into the DAC. Also a power cord to plug in, thats it.
dan  Feb 23, 2014

Extremely, Audioengine supplies all the cables for any type of connectivity , in the box. The experience is truly plug and play. I loved these speakers
ari  Feb 23, 2014
A
The speakers have a USB connection but it is only used for providing electrical power to the speakers. You can, however, use the audio input to connect your PC to the speakers. I use Audio Engine's D-1 DAC unit to connect to the speakers and that has both optical and USB connectors so you can send the more or less unaltered signal to the DAC from the PC. It is USB audio so it doesn't require drivers.
david  Feb 23, 2014

Very easy, plug into your computer and one speaker into the AC and you are good to go!
larry  Feb 23, 2014

Very easy
stan  Feb 23, 2014

It connects via a regular audio jack cable, but you can hook up via a DIgital to audio converter (DAC) for a better sound. I think Audioengine sells one that has good reviews.

Would this be a good system for home theater? I will listen to music too.

I have a 58-inch plasma HDTV set in a room of moderate size; and, for serious music listening, I have (or had) a bigger, better, and more expensive 2+1 speaker system in another, much bigger room. I wanted better speakers for the TV room, so I bought this Audioengine A5+ system. However, before installing the Audioengine A5+ in the TV room, I tested it beside the bigger & more expensive speakers in the big room. I was surprised to find that the Audioengine A5+ was the best of all. The A5+ did not include a subwoofer, but its bass was better than that of my system that included a BIG subwoofer. The A5+ also had significantly less distortion. Now I could much more clearly individual instruments in large, complex, orchestral pieces. So I kept the Audioengine A5+ in the big room and moved my now-second-best system to the TV room. (If I could afford it, I'd have A5+ systems in both rooms.) IMO, the Audioengine A5+ would be great choice for you.

I own a pair of the Audioengine A5+ speakers and subwoofer that I use with my computer system, in a room that is 12' x 13'. I love the set up and as an audiophile I find the trio very detailed with great dynamics, and depth of sound stage. These speakers have more power then I need for a room of this size but I know I made the correct decision to purchase them. To specifically answer your question; I suppose it depends upon the size of your home theater room, and what role the Audioengine A5+ speakers would play in combination with what other speakers would they be in combination with? Personally, I would consult with one of the Crutchfield advisors.
larry  Jan 14, 2014

These speakers are awsome!! On my Mac desktop I interface with a DAC (digital analog converter) which really brings music to the max height. I see no reason why home theater experience wouldn't be just as good.

Excellent choice , they perform as well as my Bose system .

I have these speakers hooked up to my computer. They sound great. There are probably lots of other options for home theater. Seek advice.
stan  Jan 14, 2014
A
They will work, would save you from having to purchase an amp/receiver. Just plug these in to the tv and you have good loud sound. We use them in our home gym - loud enough to be heard over a treadmill - but we did not want to spend $ (nor did we have the space for a surround sound system like we have in other parts of the house in the gym). We love these for what they do, ease of use and size. Is it the best choice for a top quality 'home theatre' ? You would probably get better sound and functionality from a true receiver & 5.1 set up. But, will pay a lot more....
marsh m  Jan 14, 2014
A
The A5s would be excellent for a home theater. Just make sure you feed them a clean high quality audio. The speakers so good that if your audio source isn't top notch, you'll hear everything that is wrong with your system. Use a DAC, and you will get incredible sound. Additionally, the speakers' rated wattage is the RMS wattage, so you will get more than enough amplification to use them in a small to medium sized room.
alvaro  Jan 14, 2014
A
It is for me. I also, use it to listen to music. I am happy to have it and use it for my primary system.
bernard j  Jan 14, 2014
A
No, these are powered speakers, they have a built in amplifier they would be great if you just hooked them up to a TV to get better sound, but would not be recommended as part of an entire home theater system.
ari  Jan 14, 2014
A
I primarily use these speakers to listen to music but they work great as a home theater system too. I have found that hese speakers work best when used in a small to medium sized room as they do not have as much power as I would like for use in a larger room. I use these as my music source and for movies and TV in my dorm room and these speakers produce incredible sound especially for the price. They produce a very clean, clear sound with a surprising amount of bass for such a small speaker which should work perfect in a home theater.
caeman  Jan 14, 2014
A
I use it for Home Theater plus for listening to music. I highly recommend this!
michael j  Jan 14, 2014
A
I'm currently using mine to listen to my vinyl collection. The sound these speakers produce is truly amazing. You would never guess they were a book shelf speaker in a blind test. In regards to working for a home theater I feel they will get the job done if you're only looking for two channels.

Q
Can I connect my Audioengine 2+ speakers to 5+ speakers if I purchase the 5+ Speakers ?
frank  Feb 05, 2021

A
Yes you can. They both have audio output to transfer the signal to the input.
jessi  Feb 06, 2021
A
Have no idea what sort of connection you have in mind. The powered speakers for both the 2+ and 5+ models receive a low powered input via a stereo mini jack, amplify that signal and pass it on to the passive speaker in the system. I would think that using the high output from the 5+ system as an input for the 2+ system would cause damage to the latter. If you wish to run both systems near each other I would suggest a splitter for the mini plug and run a mini stereo cable to the input of the remote powered speaker. I hope this was helpful.
albert  Feb 06, 2021

Hello, the 5s can take the place of the 2s. I do not see hooking them all up together. The 5s are pretty powerful. The 2s would not add much more than what the 5s will do on their own. I have had 5s for over 10 years and they are still amazing. James Eve
