Audioengine's A5+N speakers are perfect for a small dedicated listening system. Use these powered speakers with an iPod® to bring the sound from your portable player to life. Or pair them with a digital-to-analog converter for a computer audio system that brings out the subtle nuances in your music. The speakers' stylish bamboo finish matches well with most decors.
These speakers feature solid bamboo cabinets for a simple, modern look and stunning performance. And Audioengine takes care to be eco-friendly, too — they use only renewable and sustainable bamboo, and the cabinets are sealed with a hand-rubbed water-based polyurethane.
The A5+N's custom silk tweeters deliver smooth, open highs. Advanced Kevlar woofers provide tight, punchy mids and bass. The drivers are powered by no-nonsense built-in amplifiers. All components are housed in sturdy wood cabinets with a hand-polished finish.
Convenient connections built into the back of one speaker make it easy to hook up a portable music player like an iPod or iPhone®. A USB power output lets you charge your player, and a minijack input accepts the audio signal from its headphone jack. A rear RCA input lets you connect another audio source. Both channels of amplification are built into the left speaker, so you just make a simple, secure connection between the left and right speakers using the gold-plated speaker terminals. An included remote control makes it easy to adjust the volume, even when you're sitting across the room.
sounds fantastic. looks fantastic. was so sick of computer speakers. I had purchased the klipsch set up with sub woofer and the amp crapped out after 1.5 years of use. cost moe to fix than a new set, so off to the dump for that stuff. should have acquired these from the get go
Pros: looks good, sounds fantastic, easy to set up, comes with quality wires and everything you need to get going
Easy to set up, great wonderful deep sound. Once you get the volume balance right the sound fills the room.
Pros: Easy set up and good sound
Cons: Need a little 'tweekeing' to get best volume control manually and with remote but not really an issue
I was very pleasantly surprised by these A5's. Because of space (and wife imposed ;)) constraints, I had to go in for a fairly compact set of powered speakers, without an external subwoofer for my PC. Looking around, the AudioEngine A5's consistently received great reviews. This, plus Crutchfield customer service, made this an easy buy. And I'm glad I did! Very well built, looks great (in bamboo), good selection of inputs/outputs (I have it hooked up to my PC via 3.5mm as well as the AVR for Zone 2 audio via the RCA jacks). And the best part, the audio performance. Very well defined vocals and mids, and a strong low end. Definitely won't miss a sub for most general music/gaming uses. In fact, I would say that I would've been nice is AudioEngine offered a sub-volume control on the back, as there are cases where the bass overpowers some of the mids. But seriously though, you cannot go wrong with these! Oh, and I highly recommend you get the desktop stands for these, especially if you plan on keeping this on a desk, close to a wall. Helps tremendously in reducing/getting rid of some of the 'boominess'.
Best thing since sliced bread! These speakers really enhance the music.
Pros: Great sound and they also look great.
Purchased for my great room that's 26 x 24 and the sound fills it nicely. Excellent crisp sound -- first time I've heard the breathy style of Ben Webster with such clarity. Had a problem with the remote and the folks at Audioengine happily and quickly shipped out a replacement. Beautiful cabinetry - got via the scratch and dent option and there was nothing noticeable to a casual observer - very satisfied customer
Pros: - sound is superb - usb charger is a nice feature
Cons: spendy -even via scratch and dent
I've had about a month or so with the pair. Previously, I'm more of a headphone guy. Although it is designed for near field listening, the pair is loud enough to make my whole studio room dance. A bit too big on the desk to use with the computer but I can live with that. The bambo finish is superb quality, but honestly, a bit overprice.
Pros: Nice build quality. Good sound.
They call these "computer" or "desktop" speakers. They're audiophile-quality speakers with excellent tonality, surprising power and bass and beautiful bamboo cases.
My hi-fi now consists exclusively of a WD My Cloud NAS (3 TB) with ALAC and FLAC recordings, my A5+ speakers, an AirPort wireless (16/48) DAC and iPhones, MacBooks and windows notebooks as controllers using iTunes and VOX. For the price, I got a very nice, minimalist, digital stereo system. I'll probably add a tuner at some point, but I can stream any radio I want, now.
Cons: Bass is surprisingly good from the 5" driver, Bottom end ceases at 50Hz, so a subwoofer is needed for the lowest lows. Power switch is in awkward place. USB is charger only vs charger and audio. Would like sleep function to wake from signal.
i bought these speakers for a room above a garage and they fill the space beautifully. The sound is excellent for the size and I am very happy with the purchase. Crutchfield was a great place to buy them and will do so again.
Pros: Size Nice bamboo cabinet Great sound
I purchased these as an upgrade for a computer used specifically for listening and recording music. The music quality is superb. I was under the impression that I would also purchase the sub, but I am not so sure I need it, as the bass from these is more than I imagined it would be. The clean minamalist look of these in the bamboo is wonderful. The only Gripe I have is that the two speakers do not have the same exact finish, the powered left speaker is a hair more orange and shiney than the right speaker. (example of what I mean) When I look into the reflection from the light produced from my skylights I can see the slight image of the skylight in the left speaker and not the right. This obviously doesn't affect the sound quality though, but for the extra $69 dollars I would expect they match. Aside from the finish the build quality looks, feels and sounds of high quality. I think the remote is exactly as it should be volume, mute and sleep there aren't a bunch of functions I have no use for. Overall a great purchase and I am happy I bought them.
Pros: clean beautiful speakers, sound quality, usb port, remote
Cons: nonmatching finish of bamboo
Super clean sound. These speakers will get loud without distortion. I'm going to add theAE DAC next.
Great speakers at a great price. Sound is amazing for speakers of this size, and adding a subwoofer makes them incredible. Very pleased with this purchase!
Pros: Quality build, great sound, good price point.
The 5+N (A5+N) was an excellent purchase. Coupled with a D1 and the S8, the sound is unexpectedly extraordinary. The music emanating from my PC is warm, yet precise. A whole range of sound and music was accurately reproduced as if heard live. Acoustic music came across beautifully. The wood enclosures were an elegant addition to my study. Sounds great in small and larger rooms. A little pricey, but well worth the cost.
Pros: Precise sound, beautiful looking, compact, yet substantial easily connected, self-amplification provides flexibility with all digital sources and fills larger rooms.
Cons: Pricey, a little difficult to balance and equalize sound with additional equipment.
Sound fantastic...much better than a much more expensive dock I was using
Pros: Bamboo option is good for spouse and the RCA out lets me hook up a sub if I want more low end later
Cons: None so far
I used these to set up an AirPlay station in my living room. I am extremely pleased with the result. I also took advantage of the scratch and dent option, and my speakers seem to be in perfect condition. I do agree with another reviewer that grill covers would be nice. I also experimented with several placements-in bookshelves at various heights, on the mantel, etc.-and found that there was considerable variation in the sound quality with different locations. I ended up with them on the mantle for best sound, though I would have preferred the look of the bookshelf location.
Pros: Sound quality, size, bamboo cabinet, no need for an amplifier
Cons: Sound quality sensitive to placement, utilitarian or high-tech look of uncovered speakers
Sounded flat to me, so I returned them.
Pros: Attractive feature set and finish.
Cons: Shallow and flat sound.
Very nice speakers. Surprising bass response and detail. I replaced my Mackie hr-824s with these. The Mackies had active 8" woofers with large passive radiators. These obviously don't have the same bass response, but they do very well for their size and are in a very attractive package. Even my wife, who only notices speakers when they're intruding, commented on how attractive they look.
If I had to make a complaint, I'd say 2 things. First, the bottom of the speakers is not attractive -- a black foam pad and a brass insert for a stand mount. I was planning on placing these on their side, which really isn't possible due to the way the bottoms are finished. Second, the volume control is a rotary encoder and not a potentiometer so you can't tell at a glance where the volume is set...probably a compromise necessary to accommodate the remote control.
These are niggles. I think these speakers are well worth the cost and would make fine A/V monitors for an editing station as well.
Pros: Size, package, sound, value
Cons: Bottom finish, volume control
First off I'd like to say I'm by no means a audiophile but I know what sounds good from bad and these don't disappoint. The packaging its self is amazing, speakers and cables come in these really bags, something I haven't seen from other brands out there at this price point. The speakers themselves are crafted really nice, to remind me I'm dealing with quality. As I hooked these speakers up, I instantly noticed a difference from my previous speakers (Bose CP5), the dynamic range of my songs sound way better. The highs are really nice, mids are nice and the lows are amazing (for their size). The bass is nice and tight, but if you want more low end I recommend picking up a subwoofer. Overall, these speakers are worth every penny, from the packaging to the quality of the speakers. You really can't go wrong with these. Also big ups to Crutchfield for their fast shipping
Pros: Sound quality, packaging, sturdy build, built-in amplifier, the bamboo finish
Cons: They can be a little on the big side, if you don't have room to spare then these may not be ideal for you, other than that I have nothing to say about these speakers.
I would give this 4.5 stars if that was an option. These speakers put out nice audio at moderate to louder volumes, they are fair at lower sound levels such as for background unless you are going to put them in a bigger room. I'm using them in my bedroom for my Lynx radio. The bass response at lower volume levels is moderate, likely to be improved with the optional subwoofer. Do be careful about positioning these speakers somewhat away from the wall to improve their bass output. I'm a bit of a bass nut and usually have higher wattage speakers, but these having their own built in amplifiers do fairly well.
Pros: Very good sound with good bass at medium to loud volumes for this size of speaker. Stylish high quality cabinet and workmanship. With a subwoofer, I'd likely give this product a 5.
Cons: No grill to hide the exposed elements. Poor sound at lower levels due to no sub-woofer (which can be added as an optional wireless accessory). A bit large for a desktop (computer speaker).
I am using these for a laptop ,I replaced my Bose with these and I could not be happier. I am very picky when it comes to sound and these speakers reproduce sounds like speakers costing hundreds more. I truly am in heaven when I listen to these. I added the D1 Dac and what a difference it made over the lame sound card that came with my computer. I'm so glad I picked these up. Money well spent IMHO.
Pros: 50 watts a channel , clean sound ,
Cons: none I can tell
I replaced a set of Advent PC speakers from the mid 90's! These speakers bring sounds that I never heard with the old pair. The look and feel cannot been seen in the pictures. I am 1 week in and they sound great, I cant imagine what they will sound like after the break-in. I may add a DAC and an S8 sub... we'll see.
Pros: Build, sound, craftsmanship.... input/output options, built in amp, USB charging! Bamboo
Cons: size, almost too big for the average desk. price, no S/pdif input. no matching bamboo sub??? ;)
I don't live in a dorm room anymore so I think grill covers would be a great idea. Although these speakers are capable of nice bottom end, they will not produce it unless you incorporate an EQ. Something as simple as an EQ app on your computer or mobile device will add the puch needed.
Pros: Clean uncolored sound
Cons: Bass is thinner than source
I could never find speakers that I REALLY liked till I listened to these. True to Pavarotti--True to the Doors. Flute--Drum--Bells-You name it. They are truly worth every dime and also beautiful in appearance.Well made.
Pros: See my review
Cons: Pricey but in this case with much more
Live, interesting sound. Reasonable angular dispersion. Crutchfield is remarkably easy to work with. Nice to do a purchase with no regrets.
Pros: Classy look, easy to control, flexible interface.
Cons: Heat sink runs a little warm when muted.

Overview: Audioengine 5+ (A5+) Premium Powered Speakers deliver audiophile-quality sound from your digital audio player, computer, TV, or any other audio component for great stereo sound in any room. The A5+ offers superior stereo separation & incredible imaging from a pair of compact powered speakers.
Two-Way Speaker System: Each of the Audioengine 5+ has two drivers; a 3/4" silk dome tweeter & a 5" Kevlar woofer. The A5+ provides a real, natural sound; very near to the originally-recorded music. The A5+ has a frequency response of 50Hz to 22,000Hz (+/-1.5dB)
Built-in Amplifier: The A5+ is powered by a 50-watt RMS x 2ch amplifier (SNR: >94dB, THD: <0.05%), built into the left speaker. The built-in power amplifier saves space & eliminates the need to connect Audioengine 5+ to a stereo receiver or external power amp. Simply plug the left speaker into an AC outlet & connect the included speaker wire from the left to right speaker. All internal components of the A5+ are tuned together, providing a more efficient system requiring less power than passive speakers & amplifiers.
Note: With the amplifier built-in, the left speaker is heavier than the right (15.4 pounds vs. 9.6 pounds)
Toroidal Transformers: Power transformers are a large contributor to the overall audio performance, especially in the low end (bass response). Audioengine uses gapless core toroidal transformers which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, directly translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard, lower-cost "EI" transformers and also generate less heat.
Break-in Period: The speaker will sound great out of the box & will get better over time. No need to do anything else, but listen to them. Do give them at least 30-50 hours of break-in time before doing any critical listening.
Construction: The cabinets are built using 1" MDF with internal bracing. Internal sound-damping material reduces unwanted reflections inside the cabinet. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished, then tuned & tested together to be sold in matching pairs.
Bass Reflex Cabinet: One of the reasons the Audioengine 5+ has such great bass response for a compact speaker is the design of the rear bass port on each speaker. The rear bass ports are specifically shaped and have been precisely calculated. The result is incredible low end with minimal audible air turbulence, so you can use the Audioengine 5+ speakers with or without a separate subwoofer.
No Grilles: The speaker materials & construction are robust & extremely durable, so speaker grilles aren't needed.
Colors: The Audioengine 5+ is available in a Satin Black, Hi-Gloss White, or Solid Carbonized Bamboo finish.
Controls: The Audioengine 5+ features a rotary volume knob, power switch, and includes an IR remote control.
Connections: Most of the A5+ system's connections are on the left speaker; the only terminals on the right speaker are the binding-post speaker level inputs for connection to the left speaker's corresponding outputs.
Note: Because the Audioengine 5+ speaker system includes built-in power amplifiers, do not connect the speaker terminals to the speaker outputs of a separate stereo receiver or amplifier.
Optional Accessories: Audioengine offers wireless adapters (772W3, sold separately) that can be powered using the speaker's USB port. The W3 includes a Sender (transmitter) & Receiver; the system is designed to deliver an audio signal wirelessly between your source component & the A5+ power speaker.
Placement: For the best soundstage & imaging, the speaker should be equidistant from the side walls & and a different distance from rear walls. Both speakers should also be equidistant from your primary listening position (and at least 6' apart). Tweeters should be at approximately eye-level in your most frequent listening locations. For the best bass response, Audioengine recommend at least 6" of clearance between the rear of the speakers and the wall behind them.
High Density Foam Isolation Pad: Both speakers have a high-density foam isolation pad on the bottom for placement flexibility.
1/4"-20 Threaded Insert: Threaded 1/4-20 brass inserts are included on the bottom each speaker cabinet to provide the ability to attach the speaker to free-standing floor stands. These inserts, however, are not designed to support the full weight of the speakers and therefore should not be used with single-point wall or ceiling mounts.
Video Shielded: Both drivers (woofer & tweeter) are directly video shielded & allow you to place the speakers within a few inches of a video monitor. This shielding also offers protection for hard-drive digital music players.
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: To utilize the Audioengine speakers you would definitely want to use the Sonos Connect and not the Connect Amp, as the speakers have their own built-in amp. However, to be able to tie into your in-ceiling speakers in the home that would require the Connect Amp. If you hope to use the in-ceiling speakers and a pair of bookshelf speakers together I would not recommend using powered speakers such as the Audioengine speakers. You would need a passive bookshelf speaker instead such as the Polk Audio RTi A3 for example. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Feb 27, 2015 ] Staff
