Compact, beautiful, and affordable you get the triple whammy of speaker design with Audioengine's P4s. Plus their stylish carbonized bamboo finish matches beautifully with almost any decor. "But how do they sound?" you ask. Your music and movie soundtracks will sound incredibly transparent, alive with midrange presence and crisp, crystalline highs. We wouldn't expect anything less from Audioengine. Close your eyes and you'll be amazed that the spacious, wide-open sound you're hearing is coming from such small speakers.
Audioengine first caught our attention with their excellent-sounding line of powered speakers. These passive speakers are a great option when you already have an amplifier or receiver that you'd like to use. Pair them with Audioengine's N22 integrated amplifier for a compact desktop system that'll make you want to spend more time just listening.
These speakers feature solid bamboo cabinets for a simple, modern look and stunning performance. And Audioengine takes care to be eco-friendly, too they use only renewable and sustainable bamboo, and the cabinets are sealed with a hand-rubbed water-based polyurethane.
The P4s work great in just about any audio setup. Mix and match them with any other pair of Audioengine speakers to create a killer surround sound system in your living room. Or use them in a stereo setup in your den, bedroom, or home office. They'll sound great sitting on stands, on a bookshelf, or mounted on a wall using the integrated threaded inserts.
Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.
Beautifully constructed and very pleasing on the eye. Very clear sounding speaker but lacks any deep bass. Works well as a surround sound, jazz, or light music. Would recommend but would also recommend running an independent subwoofer.
I hesitated between 3 and 4 stars... The cabinetry and construction quality is gorgeous, which is a plus since I use these as living room speakers. Sound-wise I have mixed feelings. I realize these are 2 way speakers with a 4 inch woofer. You just can't get much on the low end with these. You listen to a jass ensemble and its as if the standing bass missed the gig. The highs are clear and present, and can go loud, but at these sound levels you'll be missing anything below 150hz. I have a powered subwoofer running alongside these, which has given me some relief from this issue. In fact, I wouldn't recommend buying such speakers to use in a living room without a subwoofer. I suppose Audioengine isn't to blame for this, you can only get so much vibration from a 4 inch driver. I think they make great desktop speakers if you already have a way to connect regular speakers to your computer or such, but if you have the usual sound card, I would skip and buy a Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system. For 200$ you'll get better dynamic range than these P4N's
Pros: Beautiful build, looks great anywhere. Crisp highs.
Cons: 4 inch driver fails to bring the bass out. A bit expensive for a 9 inch tall speaker.
These sound and look great! Have them hooked up to my pc.
Pros: Speakers look great and sound better.
I looked into a pair of these for surround sound in my livingroom after buying and loving the AudioEngine A5+ speakers (white). These bamboo P4N speakers sound fantastic and you're going to hear sounds that you likely never knew existed before in your music. I am now going to get a second pair of these and use all 4 with a Polk CS2 center channel speaker and subwoofer to complete the surround sound setup in my living room. I couldn't recommend more!
Pros: The bamboo looks natural yet classy and the speakers sound amazing.
Cons: None as ofyet.
I bought these to replace a pair of Energy CB-5 that were in my bedroom. My immediate impression was that despite being of similar size, the Audioengines didn't have anywhere near the low end of the Energys. I was a bit surprised by this, as numerous reviews suggested that bass was, of course, somewhat lacking, but was far better than you'd expect for speakers of this size. Yeah, well, not so much. However, mids and highs were absolutely spectacular. Vocals are precise, and anything acoustic is far more enjoyable with these speakers. I'm hoping that after they break in a bit the bass may come out more, but if it doesn't I will still be satisfied with my purchase. These are solid speakers and I wouldn't hesitate to use them in my usual listening room (with a sub).
Pros: Solid build, attractive cabinet, GREAT high and midrange for the money, relatively cheap, nice size for a bedroom/office system.
Cons: No grill (which they say isn't an issue, but makes me worry about damage to the drivers), lack bass.

Full-Range Sound: Each of the Audioengine P4s has two drivers; a 3/4" silk dome tweeter and a 4" Kevlar woofer. The front ported cabinets offer accurate bass down to 58 Hz.
Construction: The cabinets are built using solid, hand-finished bamboo. The color is not a stain; as the wood is pressure heated, the sugar compounds inside the bamboo are carbonized, which in turn darkens the bamboo to a rich caramel color. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished and have high-density foam isolation pads on the bottom for placement flexibility.
Binding Posts: The 5-way binding post input terminals are located at the top rear of the speaker cabinet; they will accept spade connectors, pin connectors, single and dual banana plugs, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.
Mounting: The speakers can be wall or ceiling mounted with an optional bracket (not included). There are two 1/4-20 threaded inserts on the back of each speaker, aligned vertically, approximately 1-3/4" apart. There is also one 1/4-20 threaded insert on the bottom of each speaker, in the center.
