I needed a portable set of lightweight speakers or ipod dock to carry to the beach house or on my rowboat. iHome has done a great job as far as compactness and sound although they could have made it a little louder for the outdoors. This unit is mostly for close listening unlike the Bose Soundock Portable whose volume can be very very loud without losing quality of sound. The iP56 is ideal to hold on your lap while resting in your favorite chair. It will fill a 1500cuft room with pleasant sound at a satisfying level without a problem with the SRS equalization. Without SRS EQ, the sound is thin as from a small portable radio. There is no remote included. I ordered a remote from iHome but it did not work with my unit. This is a minus ++, but the carrying case ,which also holds the charging unit, is compact and very welcome. I'd go for the Bose anytime....it also offers a carrying case.
