Our take on the Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

by Buck Pomerantz
Sound Ordnance

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Fill your vehicle with bass, not equipment

Want to put some bass to your vehicle without a lot of fuss? Sound Ordnance's B-8PTD powered subwoofer is the latest version of the B-8PT, one of our all-time best-selling compact powered subwoofers. Sound Ordnance built this new version to perform even better than its predecessor, putting a cool-running 125-watt amp and a rugged aluminum 8" sub in an extremely compact, solid ABS plastic enclosure,so you get years of bass satisfaction. This all-in-one unit frees you from having to deal with a separate sub, amp, and enclosure, saves you cargo space, and simplifies your wiring requirements. Whether it's mounted under your car seat or in an out-of-the-way location in the cab of your truck, this little workhorse will surprise you with its impressive bass and its ability to mesh perfectly with the rest of your system.

Big bass from this tough little sub

A 125-watt RMS Class D amplifier powers the sub and lives on a compact circuit board mounted inside the enclosure. The sub's stiff 8" aluminum cone holds its shape even when playing hard, helping to keep the lowest notes clean, and ensuring a long life for the sub. You can adjust the low-pass filter, variable phase control, and bass boost to get the B-8PTD sounding perfect in your vehicle. Preamp- and speaker-level inputs allow convenient connection to just about any system, even a factory stereo.

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD powered subwoofer

The molded ABS enclosure houses a 125-watt amp and a tough little 8" sub.

Good design helps

The B-8PTD's tough outer casing of molded ABS plastic serves as the sub's sealed enclosure and can withstand some pretty extreme internal pressure changes with no reverberating or buzzing. Sound Ordnance conveniently located the neat, clean, easy-to-understand controls on one side, opposite all the connections, so you won't get tangled in wires as you tune your bass. The control knobs and switches aren't recessed, so you can make adjustments by hand, without the need for a tiny screwdriver.

Whoever owns a crew cab Toyota Tacoma 2002 (including previous and some late models) know that there is a lack of space to accommodate a normal subwoofer speaker. This shallow sub fits perfect behind the rear seat and adds those low tones I was looking for. No complaints.

let me start by saying I have a small regular cab pickup. Not sure how this would work on a bigger vehicle. For me however, it is spectacular! The sound is huge for this little package. It bumps me right out of the truck. Havent turned it up past halfway yet! Sounds clean and crisp, no rattling. Installed easily with very clear instructions. I would completely recommend this little guy.
Pros:
Small. Huge bass. Easy installation

I am totally amazed with this product. It surpassed my expectations totally. I installed it in a standard cab truck and I can't turn it up to full power without it being overpowering . I am completely satisfied with this sub.
Pros:
Fit under seat perfectly, has a complete set of adjustments and came with a remote if your stereo doesn't have a level control.
Cons:

This little sub fits nicely under the back seat in my Avalanche. It almost has too much bass in fact I find myself adjusting it based on the song playing. The rotary knob makes this task a lot simpler
Pros:
Lots of bass from a small package. Easy install with options for high or low pass hook ups.

Pleasantly Surprised!

Written By TimR, Dallas, TX on Friday, September 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I wanted something very small that would be easy to place where it would not be seen, or in the way of passengers or storage in my 2003 Silverado Crew Cab. Although I had already replaced the speakers in the doors, I couldn't get over the fact that the bass sounded like the truck's doors. This little unit easily fit under the back seat on the driver's side of the truck.I figured it would be just enough to fill in the bass and get rid of that "door" sound in the bass, but when I fired it up I was quite surprised to find out this thing really rocks! No, I'm not going to win any SPL competitions, and no it doesn't play to 18hz, but it far exceeds what I expected.
Pros:
More bass than you would expect in a unit this size Very easy to install in tight spaces Non-obtrusive in the cabin
Cons:
Haven't found any cons yet. Maybe the remote volume knob could be a little smaller.

I have been around high power sub system. This is my first self powered sub unit. I chose it bc it fits under the seat perfectly and give out a lot of thumb only on half powered. Powerful, compact, less installation hassle and great bass quality in one small pack. Crutchfield is the best place to get your geeky gear and excellent customer service on on your purchase.

Rumble Seat

Written By Rich, McKinney, TX on Wednesday, September 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this sub for my Jeep Wrangler. Fits under the front seat fairly well but the mounting brackets did not work very well for my install. This compact 8 inch sub provides surprisingly good mid-low bass. If you want solid clear bass without the boom, this sub is a great choice. It is great for classic rock but it tends to bottom out on Dubstep. If you are looking for massive boom to annoy other drivers at the red light, this is not the sub you want. This Sub works great with top off the Jeep, a much needed improvement from the OEM system. I'm considering the 10" version to give a little more low end but I would recommend this sub to anyone with Jeep looking for additional bass. Would give it 5 stars but the mounting brackets could be better.
Pros:
Compact design, good mid-low bass, easy install.
Cons:
Mounting brackets are two pieces of plastic and do not mount/screw directly into the unit.

Customer support :)

Written By Onehappydude, Wellsville on Tuesday, September 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For only being 8 inches this thing is fantastic. Lots of sound, it's perfect for my jeep wrangler considering there wasnt any bass in it at all before. The only thing wrong was it stopped producing sound after 5 months. I got floor mats for the "trunk" and had to take it out and just put it back in. I've had to do that a couple times to vacuum the back but after like the fifth time it just stopped working. The power would come on just no wub wub from the bass. the screw for the wire from the battery to the sub was also really stripped by then. I saw it had a 3 year warranty so I called up costumer support and they said well I guess we'll just send you a new one. I was shocked haha. Nothing ever with any customer support has been that easy. I just told them it was working for 5 months then stopped and boom! A new one arrives 3 days later. They immediately sent me a shipping label so i could ship my old one back for free. Luckily I kept the box it came in. Then in 3 days my brand new sub came and it works like a charm. I couldn't be happier with this site. No arguing if my sub really didn't work, no arguing on how I might be able to fix it. They just said OK. It was a great relief from the other crummy sites.

I am happy with this product. It provided the amount of bass I wanted and some more if I want. I am also happy with the phone support provided by crutchfield. The couple questions I had were answered easily by them, almost like having them with you to guide the installation.
Pros:
Fits nicely in limited space. Installation good. I have a honda crv and subwoofer inputs were already in place. Provides the amount of added base that I want, was not looking to vibrate the whole vehicle.
Cons:
Have it a couple of weeks, no cons yet.

good for the price and great CS

Written By Architekt, Miami, FL. on Thursday, September 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would give 5 stars, but the first unit received didn't work. Called Crutchfield CS and they sent a replacement right away. The second unit received worked immediately, but was connected in Auto Mode power. For some reason was not turning on all the time or was turning off when the head unit volume wasn't too high. Then I wired the remote wire to a 12v power source and set the switch to remote wire. now works every time I turn on the head unit. Sound quality is good (still working on the fine tuning) compliment my sound system very good. I'm happy so far with the purchase. Crutchfield Customer Service A+
Pros:
good price and good sound
Cons:
SO quality control apparently not the best (forgot to mentioned that second unit received came with remote control unit broken. just grabbed the one from the first unit received) but with a 3 years warranty I would go for it with no worries.

A Descent Sub for the Price

Written By Anonymous, Annapolis, MD on Wednesday, September 10, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was looking for a powered sub to add to the recently installed Alpine system in my 2004 Dakota Club Cab. I was hoping for an under-seat option, and this seemed the most likely candidate. While it does fit under the seat, it is a tight fit and I can feel it through the seat cushion, so I removed it from there and it is now sitting just behind the driver's seat.

Installation was straight forward for the most part. The instructions for wiring it are a little vague, however. And if you're going to use the 10 gauge wiring kit Crutchfiled recommends, know that fitting the power and ground wires into the terminals on the back of the unit is difficult. The terminals could definitely stand to be a little wider to allow them to accomodate a 10 gauge crimp-on spade or ring terminal (it definitely does not currently).

Once installed, sounds very good. Very little distortion. It isn't high-end by any stretch, but you get what you pay for usually. It does the job I wanted it to do.
Pros:
Inexpensive way to add a sub to your system.
Cons:
Terminals too small to accomodate proper gauge ring or spade conectors.

Mild but nice.. Great Warranty and CS

Written By Foster, Florida on Friday, August 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sub if you need that extra little punch to fill out your sound. This unit is not going to rattle your windows. You're not going to rattle your doors either. It is weaker than a separate sub / amp set up for sure but if you're like me and only have space under a seat then it's a great alternative. You can tell the minute you pick this up due to it light weight that it's not going to blow you away. But it is nice enough to get a thumbs up for what it is and for the price. I am actually here to commend Crutchfield's CS. I have had mine for 1.5 years and just the other day noticed the remote would spin all the way around rather then have stops on both ends. At the same time I noticed the sub sounded blown when it heated up and I would crank it up. I called in to ask about replacing/buying the remote to see if that would fix the issue and was told a complete new speaker would be sent. I didn't know it was still under warranty and that it is a 3 year warranty on top of that. Just can't beat that! Happy Crutchfield customer.
Pros:
Fits under my seat, helps fill the sound range. Warranty and Customer Service unbeatable. EZ install. Remote volume control.
Cons:
Not deep and punchy. My remote broke. Remote feels like junk.

All was just as advertised and reviewed except one thing. Using speaker input I was not supposed to need a remote turn on wire. However, the sub would not play until I hooked it up to the remote turn on. This added some difficulty to the install since I already had run a power wire from the battery. I could have run both wires together had I known.

Compact Sub Woofer

Written By David, Iowa City, IA on Friday, August 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the ease of installation and money spent; this is a really great way to add solid bass-end for a car stereo, I have a 2004 Honda Pilot and had one similar unit under the drivers seat. I purchased the second one for the passenger-side seat. One unit rocked the car and now with two of these subs it is unbelievable solid base. (I fear I may blow the side mirrors off the car). At all listening levels the base is right on-spot. Takes a bit of tweaking to get it perfect but the key word is a "bit", an hour at most and you have solid undistorted bass until you go beyond 11 on the volume knob. I fine-tuned my subs to the Foo Fighters' song "Tired of You" and results are spectacular. Front and back speakers are Kickers and the sonic quality of the song in the car (at all speeds) is like being in the recording studio - which for a car stereo says a lot. (My head-unit is an Alpine CDE-W235BT and the source was my ipod). If you need more bass and you can fit these units under your seat -or anywhere else - you should definitely consider going this route,
Pros:
Great bass. Great price. Easy to install. Fits under many seats or, if not, is small enough to fit in a lot of small spaces.
Cons:
I wish the hook-ups (power, ground, and input) were on the long side. I had to use 90 degree RCA adaptors to get the units under my seats. Maybe Sound Ordnance will consider this as an option?? The other Con is that the stereo system sounds so good I want to spend more time/money in putting in sound dampening on the doors to even further improve the sound quality.

good reasonable base, better than cheap cylinder bazooka type. will not take up much space. You can use this with a powerful receiver and efficient speakers and NOT need a HUGE separate amp!!!
Pros:
deep base
Cons:
wiring kit is made for a HUGE separate amp. You will need smaller terminal connectors and use a 15 amp fuse not the 30 amp that is used for a huge amp.

Perfect addition to 4 door speakers

Written By Plonz, Texas on Sunday, August 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After adding 4 JL Audio TR650-CXi door speakers to a Kenwood DNX670 in my 10 year old Toyota Matrix, I was disappointed with the lack of bass. I was afraid I was going to have to step up to an amp and subwoofer enclosure but decided to give the Sound Ordinance B-8PTD a try first. Sure am glad I did. This unit adds plenty of bass for my liking without taking up cargo space and requiring a separate amp. It's very compact and fits under the front seat without taking away leg room from the rear passenger. Granted, it's not going to shake your neighbor's dentures loose but it has more than enough bass for the metal and techno I put through it. I am very pleased with the purchase.
Pros:
Compact size, puts out a surprising amount of bass, remote gain adjustment is much easier than having to mess with settings in the head unit.
Cons:
The terminals are too small for the heavy gauge wiring in the Crutchfield installation kit. You can get it to work by separating the bare wires into a forked shape and sliding in around the screw. A bit of a pain.

Written By John, Jacksonville, NC on Thursday, August 14, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speaker was small and compact, but still throws a solid sound. It fit perfectly under my rear seat in my 04 F-150 FX4. Solid workmanship and easy install. Linked up perfectly to my Pioneer head unit. The only negative thing I have to say about the speaker is actually for the mounting brackets that it came with. Because I was trying to mount the speaker over the hump under my seat, the brackets did not have a large enough lip to allow for the bracket to follow the shape of the hump. A few strips of veclro and it was all good.
Pros:
Easy installation Solid sound that blow you out of the vehicle Compact
Cons:
mounting bracket

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

Written By SMK, Vermont on Tuesday, August 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks great on paper but does not function with Subaru WRX factory head unit. I installed three separate units sequentially, the last of which was bench-tested by Crutchfield. All three malfunctioned in the same way, only intermittently producing bass, and all three went back to Crutchfield. Finally, I ordered the somewhat more-expensive Kicker Hideaway which functions perfectly with the identical wiring and sounds better as well. There seems to be either a quality control or design problem with the Sound Ordinance B-8PTD. Crutchfield support was awesome throughout.
Pros:
I am now an expert in removing and replacing my passenger seat.
Cons:
Does not work consistently with factory head unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put this in a 2011 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Long Bed. It fits perfectly behind the back seats and helps the stock speakers considerably. If you turn it up too much, it gets muddy and annoying, but at lower levels it's fantastic. I like having the remote bass control knob, and mounted it in a cubby near the steering wheel.
Pros:
Perfect for filling in some low end and taking the load off the door speakers; Quality Construction
Cons:
Bass gets very muddy when turned up too much; Wish it was low profile enough to fit under the front seats in my truck.

What a great item!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2005 Jeep Liberty, under the drivers seat. NOTE: It will fit under their but its TIGHT! I had custom brackets made up to bolt it to the seat frame bolts to the floor- not easy! The floor is not flat. But worth the extra work. I went ahead and installed the control knob in the little eyeglass like holder by the lighter socket. Glad I did that as well because you will want and enjoy to tune your new found bass in an instant per song your listening to. If you want an easy install in this vehicle do it in the rear cargo floor- but at the cost of loosing cargo space. I could not afford to loose the room. As reviewed before- your not going to impress a block party- but you will have a nice party of your own in the car. LOVE IT. ( PS- I also have the Kicker speakers - another great item )
Pros:
Price, size and results.

Just what I wanted!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for my 2012 Ford F-150 SuperCrew with factory SYNC audio. I had replaced all the door speakers with Polk 6x9s, but there just wasn't any low-end bass in my music. I didn't want earth-shaking bass and I don't listen to rap or hip-hop which calls for a lot of bass. I just needed enough to fill-out my 70s/80s/90s music and not break the bank. The Sound Ordinance B-8PTD is exactly what I needed! I immediately noticed how fuller and richer my music sounded. Its not perfect, but for the price and category its in, I gave 5-stars. Regarding the install, I've never installed an amp or sub in my life, and this took me about 2 days. I'm not going to say it was easy or I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I did it myself. NOTE: Get the PAC OEM-1 for your specific vehicle (i.e. AOEM-FRD24 for Fords). It adds low-level RCA outputs from your factory stereo and makes installation so much easier and higher quality. It also gives your sub a remote power-on which is very nice.
Pros:
Compact - fits discreetly under my seat in the back of my truck. Fills-out lower end of audio nicely & my music sounds great! Not so powerful it rattles windows or pisses off my neighbors. Great price & included a free wiring kit.
Cons:
Mounting options are limited.

a few hiccups, but overall a solid unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First unit was defective. Crutchfield service was in top of it, and had the unit replaced in a day. Second unit required a remote wire, despite the amp having a mode to power on by speaker level inputs.

Unit fit perfectly being the bench seat in a crew cab f250 after removing the plate that hold the stock jack (note that these mounting screws for the plate also make an ideal ground point). Allowed me to keep my under seat fold out rack and behind seat storage box, but still have quality sound.

This unit isn't a "brain shaker", but rounds out the sound of my infinity reference speakers with stock head unit. This sounds better than the Bose system in my wife's acura!

Speaker has loosened up considerably in the 3 weeks since install, and sounds even better now. You'll need to play with the settings on the amp a bit to get it " just right", but with the install location this is easy to accomplish.

The Velcro provided is a joke for securing the unit. Do yourself a favor and buy something more industrial to hold this in place.

4 stars for sound, 3 stars for Velcro and factory qa, 5 stars for crutchfield service.
Pros:
Big sound in a small space, blending with existing stereo/stock head unit.
Cons:
Factory qa

Happy,Happy,Happy

Plenty of bass for my single cab Silverado. Had local audio shop install it. Drove out the parking lot with James Browns "Living in America" playing and wearing a big smile. Just what my new Pioneer head unit and aftermarket door speakers needed. If you need more bass in a pickup or small car than this baby puts out you're just showing off(not that any things wrong with that). Remote knob tape gave it up after first day and left it laying in the floorboard. Easily fixed by snapping remote apart and discovering a small screw hole that was covered up by the sticky tape. Just tapped a small flat head screw through the hole and into the plastic on under side of dash beside the steering wheel then snapped bottom half of remote with knob back in place. WaLa. Problem solved. I love my little sub. Fits perfectly under pass. seat of my '08 Chevy.
Pros:
Small, great sound
Cons:
Remote mounting issue

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We were just looking for some additional bass without blowing us out of the car with a larger subwoofer enclosure. This provided just what we needed in a compact easy to install package. The bass notes are clean and tight and compliment our new door speakers very well.
Pros:
Compact package, ease of installation, clean tight bass sound compliments new mid-range speakers.
Cons:
None

1997 Jeep TJ Fitment

Written By Brad, VA on Thursday, July 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This isn't for the sound so much as the fitment. I probably should have taken a closer look at ODs before purchasing but I'm going to make it work anyway. This WILL NOT fit under the driver or front passenger seats in a 97 TJ. Just a fair warning to other jeepers. The only way it will fit under the front seats is if you let it stick way out into the rear floorpan area, but if you're a jeeper you don't want it directly on the floorpan anyway...playing in mud and water is fun until it meets electricity.

I could potentially mount it just under the rear bench seat at the front edge where it's tipped up a bit higher, but if you're like me and you routinely flip up/forward or remove the rear bench seat for more cargo space that won't do either as I don't want to risk damage to the unit by dropping hardware on it. That leaves me with one possible option. Building my own mount.

Also note, the mounting brackets this thing come with appear to only be for mounting FLAT on a horizonal plane as they do NOT mount directly to the unit with any sort of bolts or anything. They just slip over the lip of the bottom of the frame to hold it in place on the floor. I doubt this will mount with the hardware received in any other orientation. It would be nice if the unit itself had some predrilled holes on the frame/chassis for mounting to some other type of bracket.
Pros:
Sounds ok. I wired it up temporarily before mounting just to ensure working order.
Cons:
None yet besides the limited mounting options that I can find.
