Our take on the Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

by Buck Pomerantz
Sound Ordnance

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Fill your vehicle with bass, not equipment

Want to put some bass to your vehicle without a lot of fuss? Sound Ordnance's B-8PTD powered subwoofer is the latest version of the B-8PT, one of our all-time best-selling compact powered subwoofers. Sound Ordnance built this new version to perform even better than its predecessor, putting a cool-running 125-watt amp and a rugged aluminum 8" sub in an extremely compact, solid ABS plastic enclosure,so you get years of bass satisfaction. This all-in-one unit frees you from having to deal with a separate sub, amp, and enclosure, saves you cargo space, and simplifies your wiring requirements. Whether it's mounted under your car seat or in an out-of-the-way location in the cab of your truck, this little workhorse will surprise you with its impressive bass and its ability to mesh perfectly with the rest of your system.

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD powered sub

This compact sub delivers strong bass without taking up much space.

Big bass from this tough little sub

A 125-watt RMS Class D amplifier powers the sub and lives on a compact circuit board mounted inside the enclosure. The sub's stiff 8" aluminum cone holds its shape even when playing hard, helping to keep the lowest notes clean, and ensuring a long life for the sub. You can adjust the low-pass filter, variable phase control, and bass boost to get the B-8PTD sounding perfect in your vehicle. Preamp- and speaker-level inputs allow convenient connection to just about any system, even a factory stereo.

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD powered subwoofer

The molded ABS enclosure houses a 125-watt amp and a tough little 8" sub.

Good design helps

The B-8PTD's tough outer casing of molded ABS plastic serves as the sub's sealed enclosure and can withstand some pretty extreme internal pressure changes with no reverberating or buzzing. Sound Ordnance conveniently located the neat, clean, easy-to-understand controls on one side, opposite all the connections, so you won't get tangled in wires as you tune your bass. The control knobs and switches aren't recessed, so you can make adjustments by hand, without the need for a tiny screwdriver.

Compact Sub Woofer

Written By David, Iowa City, IA on Friday, August 22, 2014

For the ease of installation and money spent; this is a really great way to add solid bass-end for a car stereo, I have a 2004 Honda Pilot and had one similar unit under the drivers seat. I purchased the second one for the passenger-side seat. One unit rocked the car and now with two of these subs it is unbelievable solid base. (I fear I may blow the side mirrors off the car). At all listening levels the base is right on-spot. Takes a bit of tweaking to get it perfect but the key word is a "bit", an hour at most and you have solid undistorted bass until you go beyond 11 on the volume knob. I fine-tuned my subs to the Foo Fighters' song "Tired of You" and results are spectacular. Front and back speakers are Kickers and the sonic quality of the song in the car (at all speeds) is like being in the recording studio - which for a car stereo says a lot. (My head-unit is an Alpine CDE-W235BT and the source was my ipod). If you need more bass and you can fit these units under your seat -or anywhere else - you should definitely consider going this route,
Pros:
Great bass. Great price. Easy to install. Fits under many seats or, if not, is small enough to fit in a lot of small spaces.
Cons:
I wish the hook-ups (power, ground, and input) were on the long side. I had to use 90 degree RCA adaptors to get the units under my seats. Maybe Sound Ordnance will consider this as an option?? The other Con is that the stereo system sounds so good I want to spend more time/money in putting in sound dampening on the doors to even further improve the sound quality.

good reasonable base, better than cheap cylinder bazooka type. will not take up much space. You can use this with a powerful receiver and efficient speakers and NOT need a HUGE separate amp!!!
Pros:
deep base
Cons:
wiring kit is made for a HUGE separate amp. You will need smaller terminal connectors and use a 15 amp fuse not the 30 amp that is used for a huge amp.

Perfect addition to 4 door speakers

Written By Plonz, Texas on Sunday, August 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After adding 4 JL Audio TR650-CXi door speakers to a Kenwood DNX670 in my 10 year old Toyota Matrix, I was disappointed with the lack of bass. I was afraid I was going to have to step up to an amp and subwoofer enclosure but decided to give the Sound Ordinance B-8PTD a try first. Sure am glad I did. This unit adds plenty of bass for my liking without taking up cargo space and requiring a separate amp. It's very compact and fits under the front seat without taking away leg room from the rear passenger. Granted, it's not going to shake your neighbor's dentures loose but it has more than enough bass for the metal and techno I put through it. I am very pleased with the purchase.
Pros:
Compact size, puts out a surprising amount of bass, remote gain adjustment is much easier than having to mess with settings in the head unit.
Cons:
The terminals are too small for the heavy gauge wiring in the Crutchfield installation kit. You can get it to work by separating the bare wires into a forked shape and sliding in around the screw. A bit of a pain.

Great upgrade without taking space

Written By John, Jacksonville, NC on Thursday, August 14, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speaker was small and compact, but still throws a solid sound. It fit perfectly under my rear seat in my 04 F-150 FX4. Solid workmanship and easy install. Linked up perfectly to my Pioneer head unit. The only negative thing I have to say about the speaker is actually for the mounting brackets that it came with. Because I was trying to mount the speaker over the hump under my seat, the brackets did not have a large enough lip to allow for the bracket to follow the shape of the hump. A few strips of veclro and it was all good.
Pros:
Easy installation Solid sound that blow you out of the vehicle Compact
Cons:
mounting bracket

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

Written By SMK, Vermont on Tuesday, August 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks great on paper but does not function with Subaru WRX factory head unit. I installed three separate units sequentially, the last of which was bench-tested by Crutchfield. All three malfunctioned in the same way, only intermittently producing bass, and all three went back to Crutchfield. Finally, I ordered the somewhat more-expensive Kicker Hideaway which functions perfectly with the identical wiring and sounds better as well. There seems to be either a quality control or design problem with the Sound Ordinance B-8PTD. Crutchfield support was awesome throughout.
Pros:
I am now an expert in removing and replacing my passenger seat.
Cons:
Does not work consistently with factory head unit.

Put this in a 2011 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Long Bed. It fits perfectly behind the back seats and helps the stock speakers considerably. If you turn it up too much, it gets muddy and annoying, but at lower levels it's fantastic. I like having the remote bass control knob, and mounted it in a cubby near the steering wheel.
Pros:
Perfect for filling in some low end and taking the load off the door speakers; Quality Construction
Cons:
Bass gets very muddy when turned up too much; Wish it was low profile enough to fit under the front seats in my truck.

What a great item!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2005 Jeep Liberty, under the drivers seat. NOTE: It will fit under their but its TIGHT! I had custom brackets made up to bolt it to the seat frame bolts to the floor- not easy! The floor is not flat. But worth the extra work. I went ahead and installed the control knob in the little eyeglass like holder by the lighter socket. Glad I did that as well because you will want and enjoy to tune your new found bass in an instant per song your listening to. If you want an easy install in this vehicle do it in the rear cargo floor- but at the cost of loosing cargo space. I could not afford to loose the room. As reviewed before- your not going to impress a block party- but you will have a nice party of your own in the car. LOVE IT. ( PS- I also have the Kicker speakers - another great item )
Pros:
Price, size and results.

Just what I wanted!

Written By REarls, Overland Park, KS on Wednesday, August 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for my 2012 Ford F-150 SuperCrew with factory SYNC audio. I had replaced all the door speakers with Polk 6x9s, but there just wasn't any low-end bass in my music. I didn't want earth-shaking bass and I don't listen to rap or hip-hop which calls for a lot of bass. I just needed enough to fill-out my 70s/80s/90s music and not break the bank. The Sound Ordinance B-8PTD is exactly what I needed! I immediately noticed how fuller and richer my music sounded. Its not perfect, but for the price and category its in, I gave 5-stars. Regarding the install, I've never installed an amp or sub in my life, and this took me about 2 days. I'm not going to say it was easy or I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I did it myself. NOTE: Get the PAC OEM-1 for your specific vehicle (i.e. AOEM-FRD24 for Fords). It adds low-level RCA outputs from your factory stereo and makes installation so much easier and higher quality. It also gives your sub a remote power-on which is very nice.
Pros:
Compact - fits discreetly under my seat in the back of my truck. Fills-out lower end of audio nicely & my music sounds great! Not so powerful it rattles windows or pisses off my neighbors. Great price & included a free wiring kit.
Cons:
Mounting options are limited.

a few hiccups, but overall a solid unit

Written By rrschott, greenwood, in on Sunday, August 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First unit was defective. Crutchfield service was in top of it, and had the unit replaced in a day. Second unit required a remote wire, despite the amp having a mode to power on by speaker level inputs.

Unit fit perfectly being the bench seat in a crew cab f250 after removing the plate that hold the stock jack (note that these mounting screws for the plate also make an ideal ground point). Allowed me to keep my under seat fold out rack and behind seat storage box, but still have quality sound.

This unit isn't a "brain shaker", but rounds out the sound of my infinity reference speakers with stock head unit. This sounds better than the Bose system in my wife's acura!

Speaker has loosened up considerably in the 3 weeks since install, and sounds even better now. You'll need to play with the settings on the amp a bit to get it " just right", but with the install location this is easy to accomplish.

The Velcro provided is a joke for securing the unit. Do yourself a favor and buy something more industrial to hold this in place.

4 stars for sound, 3 stars for Velcro and factory qa, 5 stars for crutchfield service.
Pros:
Big sound in a small space, blending with existing stereo/stock head unit.
Cons:
Factory qa

Happy,Happy,Happy

Plenty of bass for my single cab Silverado. Had local audio shop install it. Drove out the parking lot with James Browns "Living in America" playing and wearing a big smile. Just what my new Pioneer head unit and aftermarket door speakers needed. If you need more bass in a pickup or small car than this baby puts out you're just showing off(not that any things wrong with that). Remote knob tape gave it up after first day and left it laying in the floorboard. Easily fixed by snapping remote apart and discovering a small screw hole that was covered up by the sticky tape. Just tapped a small flat head screw through the hole and into the plastic on under side of dash beside the steering wheel then snapped bottom half of remote with knob back in place. WaLa. Problem solved. I love my little sub. Fits perfectly under pass. seat of my '08 Chevy.
Pros:
Small, great sound
Cons:
Remote mounting issue

1997 Jeep TJ Fitment

Written By Brad, VA on Thursday, July 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This isn't for the sound so much as the fitment. I probably should have taken a closer look at ODs before purchasing but I'm going to make it work anyway. This WILL NOT fit under the driver or front passenger seats in a 97 TJ. Just a fair warning to other jeepers. The only way it will fit under the front seats is if you let it stick way out into the rear floorpan area, but if you're a jeeper you don't want it directly on the floorpan anyway...playing in mud and water is fun until it meets electricity.

I could potentially mount it just under the rear bench seat at the front edge where it's tipped up a bit higher, but if you're like me and you routinely flip up/forward or remove the rear bench seat for more cargo space that won't do either as I don't want to risk damage to the unit by dropping hardware on it. That leaves me with one possible option. Building my own mount.

Also note, the mounting brackets this thing come with appear to only be for mounting FLAT on a horizonal plane as they do NOT mount directly to the unit with any sort of bolts or anything. They just slip over the lip of the bottom of the frame to hold it in place on the floor. I doubt this will mount with the hardware received in any other orientation. It would be nice if the unit itself had some predrilled holes on the frame/chassis for mounting to some other type of bracket.
Pros:
Sounds ok. I wired it up temporarily before mounting just to ensure working order.
Cons:
None yet besides the limited mounting options that I can find.

I wasn't expecting to have earth shattering bass but this little system surprised me. I have no room in my truck for a proper sub box so this was the only alternative. If I could have given it a 4 1/2 star I would. Not quite a 5, but close. And the deal Crutchfield had made it a no brainer. Very pleased with the product.

B-8PT

Written By Donnie H, Tylertown,MS on Tuesday, July 15, 2014

I have a friend that has a 2004 Dodge Quad Cab and wanted some bass in his ride that would not take away any room. so I suggested the B8PT. This did the trick for him. It filled in the bass he was missing from his door speakers that are by-the-way not stock. This little unit is not meant for trying to shake your friends car next to you. It will fill in the bass that your door speakers have trouble producing. To secure the remote bass knob we used 3M velcro and it worked just fine. If you'll adjust your gain and crossover properly I think you will enjoy this unit. We also hooked it up to RCA outputs on his Pioneer radio.
Pros:
Fits just about anywhere, 3 year warranty, and came with amp kit.
Cons:
Some try to compare this unit to an SPL subwoofer and in doing so are greedy with their stars.

Works well

Written By boleebar, Midwest on Monday, July 07, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was easy with the free wiring kit that was included with the purchase. It did take a little bit of time working with the controls both on the sub, as well as the sub controls on the head unit, to get the sound i was looking for. Occasionally, a song will need a little more or less and that is easily taken care of with the remote dial.

As many have stated here before, if you want to fill in the bottom of the spectrum in your system, this works very well. The shape/size of the unit makes it possible to put under the driver seat (despite the electric seat adjustment motors, etc) and not lose any storage space in my quad cab pickup. I would describe the sound as "tight" and not "boomy" as others have mentioned.

If you are looking to annoy people outside your vehicle with massive thumping bass, this is not the unit for you. If you have limited cab space and want to fill out the sound of your system so you can feel the kick bass and bass guitar - and you are willing to spend some time adjusting the sound controls, I would think you would be satisfied. I am.

I've had this unit for almost a month and have had no QA issues to date.
Pros:
Size, ease of install, sound
Cons:
None so far

Reliability Issues

Written By Allan, Lugoff, SC on Wednesday, July 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub has reliability issues, I am using a stock head unit so I am running through the high level input and had issues with the auto turn on. The first sub lasted for all of about 14 seconds and Crutchfield was great about sending a replacement promptly, the second worked for a few hours and gave the same issues. It is a bit boomy and doesnt handle lows the best but fills out the system when it is working. You may not have the same issues running on the low level input with remote turn on. I have returned this item and gone with the Focal iBus 20 for the time being. For anyone considering this, im sure you have also looked at the Kicker hideaway and the focal, please check out the following article on this website. I did not find it until after my original order but the actual performance stats vary pretty greatly from the listed stats. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-uhvO7tdSuXL/learn/testing-three-compact-subs-in-the-crutchfield-labs.html

Poor longevity

Written By steveinglendale, Glendale, CA on Wednesday, July 02, 2014

Got this several years ago to help out with base after replacing rotted, blown paper Infinity speakers with polys in 2000 Durango. Polys are stiff especially when new and had little low end delivery at low to med volume. Though handy with tools I did not feel confident to hook-up to stock head unit myself. Professional installation and set-up gave an OK boost with some dead zones, but was acceptable - for about a year. Then became all fuzzy and worse than unusable. Crutchfield tech said I probably blew it out playing it too loud to get enough base feel. Ah, isn't that what it's supposed to do? So, no help, and now just occupies space under passenger seat. Also, there was no effective way, mechanical or glue, to attach the remote volume control to the underside of the dash. Just falls off no matter what I tried and there's no access to pass into the dash or mount it from behind - poorly thought out with no execution.
Pros:
Nice size, OK'ish performance when it worked.
Cons:
Not enough punch for the money, poor electronics build quality, pain in the neck to install in some vehicles..

BOOM! - Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

Written By RebelDave, Uniondale, NY on Friday, June 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Big things come in little packages. This sub definitely packs a punch considering the size. I intended on placing the sub in the trunk of my VW Jetta but after receiving it I realized it would work much better placed right underneath the drivers seat. I do not have to turn the knob control that comes with the unit up more than half way to receive a clean, crisp sounding bass. Other configurations with my head unit have been done to make the overall sound better so I definitely recommend assistance with the setup if you're not an audiophile. My only gripe is that the unit does not cover the lows as well as the highs.
Pros:
-Small unit with a large sound.
Cons:
-Lows are not well defined

Just didn't hold up

Written By Sean, Port Angeles, WA on Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit behind the seat in a day cab Kenworth Truck. Running my full range speakers off of deck power I figured it would be enough bass. I had to turn it almost all the way up but with that done it did all right considering how small it is. I really wasn't expecting to rattle any windows just a little bottom end to fill out the sound. So all in all I would have rated this with 4 stars but then it quit working yesterday. Only 6 months old and it just quit. Really disappointed with build quality... even for the money I still expected at least a year of trouble free. Crutchfield has been great though... no hassle .. they had me test the voltage on the supply to make sure it wasn't in there and then gave me an RMA number to replace it. I went ahead and ordered the infinity basslink for a bit more punch and will use this in another vehicle after it is replaced. So 2 stars for unit but 5 stars for Crutchfield customer service.
Pros:
Small package to fit in tight spaces and sounds o.k. considering size
Cons:
Build quality just doesn't hold up

suits my system well

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this to add bass to a system I just replaced all speakers and headunit. The sound was good but was missing the definit bass sound. Clarity was their and great mid tones. But deep bass was absent. So by reading reviews on Sound Ordnance B-8PTD had a lot of positive reviews. So I went with it and I am glad I did. The size fits great in my 1994 F 150 regular cab. And the sound is great for my needs. But must say if you want window vibrating thumping. This is not for you. It's a great set up for adding the lows alot of 6 x 9 speakers can't produce without the distortion.
Pros:
Compact, all in one unit. Easy adjustments.
Cons:
Mounting brackets don't work well on carpet. Screw broke through the holes when tighten down.

Sound Ordnance

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2003 dodge dakota and this fit perfect. I am 16 and if you are looking to wake the neighbors up this is not the powered sub you want. This sub just fills in that bass that your door speakers cannot hit as good. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because the connectors for the ground and power cable that were supplied with the powered sub are to big to fit into the outlets on the sub. No big deal I just cut a little bit off the connector an it fit. And also it didn't fit under my seat a little disappointed but oh well it doesn't take up much space anyways. But all in all it sounds good for an 8in sub I would recommend it to anyone who wants a little bass.
Pros:
Small Good sound Good quality
Cons:
Connectors don't fit Didn't fit under seat

The remote switch alows for adjustment on the fly if you relly want to crank it up !!!! A+++++++
Pros:
small, easy to install, free wiring at this time through crutchfield, big sound, love it !!

S/O B-8PTD Dodge ram

Written By Juergs, Thibodaux, LA on Saturday, June 14, 2014

I bought this a couple years ago and put it in my dodge ram. Took the middle front seat out and custom installed it there. I'm not a fan of this. Of course, my truck already had the 7 speaker infinity sound system but I was looking for a little more bass. It did give me a little more on the low end but not much. Also, the unit (speaker I think) has blown for the second time. I sent it back to Crutchfield the first time and they fixed it for free. Now, I'm done with this thing. I guess you get what you pay for. If you don't have any bass in your car right now, this will probably work but it's not for me.
Pros:
small and in-expensive
Cons:
speaker is cheap in design

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

Written By J man, Mullica Hill, N.J. on Friday, June 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub is solid as a brick in build quality! About as easy to install as they come, even with the less than perfect instruction manual. Plenty of bass for me; almost too much. I am still experimenting with the adjustments to get the sound just right for my taste. I think the sound would be even better using the pre-amp inputs, but I had no choice but to use speaker inputs. I mounted it on the rear wall of my Tundra Crewmax so I could slide the rear seat all the way back. The design of the 07 thru 13 Crewmax rear seating does not allow the sub to be mounted under the seat. Folding the seat down flat would cause damage to the sub. All in all, I am very satisfied with this sub, especially for this price!
Pros:
Self contained. Easy to install. Well built. Priced right.
Cons:
Instruction manual could be better.

Great little sub

Written By Seth, Ny, ny on Wednesday, June 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the sub for my 2009 hyundai accent and it was dead on arrival. I called Crutchfield on a Sunday and the rep was very prompt to troubleshoot and decision was made to send another replacement on the spot. When the replacement arrived, I was pleasantly surprised on how perfectly it fit completely under the passenger seat. The seat has plenty of room to move forward and backward without touching the sub. As far as sound quality it is awesome. The sub provides more than adequate bass. You won't rattle the trunk door or the pants of the guy next to you at a red light but for my level of bass it's perfect. The remote bass level control is perfect and used 3 m double sided tape since the included tape was useless. In general it's perfect for my application and the price rocked which even came with a free amp wire kit.
Pros:
Awesome punch for a small compact car. Guys perfectly under the passenger seat of a 2009 hyundai accent. Simple easy to setup. Comes with a cool decal and no frills.
Cons:
The double sided tape on the remote control was useless but no other cons at all.

These sound great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These sound great for not that much money. Really thump and do not take up too much room. I've had 4 of them. Two in the current car.
Pros:
Low profile big sound.
Cons:
A little quirk where the power screws on can arc between the connection and the body. Just put a piece of electrical tape on.

Inner ear

Written By Merell, Atlanta Ga. on Tuesday, June 10, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a Product that's perfect for someone who loves listening to music. Because it's the perfect listening device for compact sound with a huge sound as though it's from a much larger device. At first I didn't want to go with this compontent device, but I'm glad I did the sound for the size is wonderful. So I say this to others out there that want to save some funds for a really good sounding device. I would say go with this device for really good sound. Also the Quility is there as well as the durability.
Pros:
The pros are the sound and Quility is there but, for more punch in the sound you'll need to step up to a bigger component in size as well as power.
Cons:
This particular component is great for your average listening sound with enough punch to get the job done without fail, but to raise the bar in depth you'll need to invest in a larger component of its size to really get the job done in a really deep base way of that kind of sound.
