Great value and reasonable results

Written by: Tapokata from California on December 12, 2015

1993 Toyota Pickup
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good value and very reasonable wonder quality. Replaced the OEM speakers in my 1993 Toyota Pickup, and matched to an older JVC HD Radio/CD unit that is 20 watt X 4 RMS. Didn't need the wiring harness pigtails that were supplied. Dash assembly instructions were clear and correct, but the unexpected oddity was the factory speakers were attached to an OEM plastic speaker baffle box, including a bass port. I had to remove the three screws holding the box to the lower dash panel, and then remove/replace the speaker. The spade lugs on the speaker matched up to the OEM wiring, so I just pushed the old spade ends on to the new speakers. For a 4" speaker in a rolling beer can, the sound quality is very good. My truck no longer sounds like an angry hive of bees is nesting in the dash, irritated by my choice in music. Great value for ~$30 for these little soldiers.

Pros: Great value, good sound. Matches reasonable expectations for a 4" speaker mounted in the corner of the dash board. Sound stage has the ambience and aural comfort of a middle row seat on a Southwest Airlines jet heading to LAX at Thansgiving.

Cons: A little surprise in the use of an OEM baffle box that was not acknowledged in the install instructions, but understandable and easily sorted out. I didn't need the wiring harness pigtails, and I am saving the dog tags enclosed in the package for when I am drafted into the Zombie Irregulars, semi-ambulatory brigade.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A reliable quality and bargain for the price. You will realize the bottom end will not be a booming base, but it does bring through the bass guitar runs well enough. Midrange is good to excellent. Highs are also acceptable. Remember what you paid! Installation went easily with supplied installation kit. Another great bargain. Sound quality was best with CD play. Radio not good but believe it's the radio reception quality.

Pros: Easy installation, high quality ratio to costs.

Cons: No cons worth mentioning.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great low cost replacement speaker for the dried-out factory units. Synthetic cones sound great and should withstand off road moisture. Had looked for a good replacement to fit in the factory LR door depth and to fit the factory grill. Speaker mounting tabs require trimming to fit within the grill diameter and some foam washers keep things tight.

Pros: Correct size thanks to the Crutchfield "fits my car" feature, they were correct. Great sound for the size and good frequency range, output and clarity for a 4" replacement.

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these aspeakers to replace a defective Pioneer speaker in the front door of my 2007 Aveo. I have to admit it was to cheap price that got my attention. I was a little scepticle, but I figured if they are bavcked by Crutchfield then they should be fine. The install went smooth and these little speakers sound every bit as good as the pioneers they replaced. I like to listen to Metal and also some 70's style prog rock and blasting that stuff out of me Kenwood deck the sound is excellent. All in all a good purchase for the budget strapped person.

Pros: Price, good sound quality and sturdy build!

Cons: None yet- I'm sure for more money one can do better, but I like 'em!

I used them in my Series III Xj6 Jaguar, replacing the original speakers. I knew they would have no bass, and since I was using a subwoofer, I thought they would be good. Sadly, they were also weak in the mid range which left me with a muddy, unsatisfying sound. Very disappointed, I removed them and reinstalled my original speakers, and the sound improved dramatically.

Pros: Cheap. Good hi range.

Cons: Poor sound, no bass, weak mid range.

4" speakers are often a necessary evil. They're a common replacement size, if you don't want to do any cutting, but don't deliver the necessary bass. The Sound Ordinance P-40 speakers are excellent replacement speakers. The quality is great, they fit well with existing grills (they do not come with grills), and they produce excellent sound.

Most bang for the buck!

Written by: JNS from Hemet, CA on February 17, 2014

Ordered these P40's to replace the 35 year old and dried up speakers that came in my MGB. Needless to say the sound is from day to night and no buzzing. The price is so low that I am amazed at how they do it. Still using the original AM/FM that came in the car. Actually hear decent bass & highs now when car standing still. With top down and driving exhaust drowns out the sound which is fine for me!

Pros: Perfect fit in original holes make easy install. Comes with necessary terminal connectors.

Cons: I ordered cheap connectors which were not necessary and spoke to a Crutchfield representative before hand that should have told me they were not needed!

Better than my Toyota Supra Turbo OE speakers

Written by: NickD from Wisconsin. on September 26, 2012

1988 Toyota Supra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, the application, Supra only comes with 4" speakers mounted in a plastic resonant box like Bose. And yes, they do sound like a 4" speaker in a plastic enclosure just like Bose. Actually the rears are 4 1/2" speaker with a more like square frame. No big deal, used 1/8" plywood to make a gasket, outline identical to the old speakers, hole for these round speakers.

This was Toyota's idea of providing bass, actually, the cone diameter of the fronts are 3 3/4", rears are 4" not really that much difference. My radio is stock and have no intention of changing it thinking some day, this car will be a classic. But I did invert the spare tire so I could mount a 10" Overdrive Woofer fed by both channels into an amplifier I designed for bass with a 40 watt output, you want bass, I got bass and a fair amount of midrange to boot. These four inch speakers solve the missing high range for me, and that is exactly what they do. So very pleased with them. Not interested in blowing my ears off, but virtually harmonic distortion free if I turn the volume to maximum. I had to add a volume control to my woofer amplifier to turn it down, more interested in a flat response.

I did look over the entire range of 4" speakers that Crutchfield sells, as well as some completive options. Crutchfield for as long as I can remember always treated me well. I see the top of the line 4" speakers they carry have a 600 buck price tag, But bet, really not much different than these.

Pros: Inexpensive, weather proof cones, nice tweeters, easily handle around 15 watts and fit the application.

Cons: Not 18" woofers in folded horn enclosures.

Great sound and value

Written by Jude, Director, Digital Imaging, on 7/10/2014 9:22:00 AM
My son just purchased a newer car, a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and the sound system it came with was, well, awful. We sat down together and planned a system and since he was on a budget we decided we would go with our house brand Sound Ordnance for most of it, and we are not disappointed. We installed the P65-C in the rear deck using the SA69 6X9 adapter. We then installed the P-40 in the front doors with fabricated brackets we made from the 12x12 sheet of ABS #1208900903 and then used the Dynamat #15410415 to seal it all up and add sound deadening to the doors. We chose the JVC KD-R950BT for the Bluetooth and the generous power the internal amplifier has, plus the abundant color choices made it easy to match the red backlighting in the Pontiac. We needed bass so we used the Sound Ordnance B-24 and the Rockford Fosgate #575P500X1B we had from his previous vehicle and connected it using the EFX 8 gauge wiring kit #142PA8. We spent a Sunday working on this project and have to say it exceeded my expectations on sound. It sounds clear, the bass hits as hard as you want and the total price was well within his budget. This is a great system and it was also a great day spent with my son.
