Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Cambridge Audio 751BD Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD, BD-3D, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-Audio
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, HDCD, SACD

Note: This unit supports the playback of both NTSC & PAL encoded discs.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The 751BD is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet, via the player's Ethernet port.

Note: The tested Blu-ray player contained firmware version 751BDCU-10-0721 and required an immediate firmware version update (as of 7/12/2012). Visit Cambridge Audio's Support Site for the latest firmware updates.

AVCHD Playback: The 751BD will play home videos recorded in AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264), a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW discs. AVCHD can also be played from a USB flash memory device connected to the front panel port.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

DVD Audio: DVD Audio is a digital audio format that delivers high-fidelity audio content on a DVD disc. DVD-Audio supports bit depths up to 24-bit and sample rates up to 192 kHz, while CD audio is only 16-bit, 44.1 kHz. Compared to CD audio discs, DVD Audio offers considerable more music storage, higher audio quality, and additional audio channels for surround sound. DVD-Audio offers many possible configurations of audio channels (up to 5.1-channel surround sound).

HDCD: HDCD is a variation of the existing CD standard. By extending the information stored in the CD signal by 4-bits (CDs are based on 16-bit audio technology) to 20-bits, HDCD can extend the sonic capacity of current CD technology to new standards.

Kodak Picture CD: This unit can also play JPEG files stored on a Kodak Picture CD; you can enjoy pictures on the television by playing back the CD.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Cambridge Audio Blu-ray player will play MP3/WMA audio files written to CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW discs.

Video Features

Video Outputs: The Cambridge Audio 751BD is equipped with the following high-definition and standard definition video outputs.

  • Dual HDMI 1.4a Outputs: With twin HDMI outputs, the 751BD can deliver the same video signal to two display simultaneously. Both HDMI outputs are fully compatible with the HDMI 1.4 standard for 3D, Deep Color, &  xvYCC support. The HDMI outputs support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
  • Component Video Output: The 751BD features one component video output, capable of passing a progressive scan signal or an interlaced video signal. The component video output supports 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i.
  • Composite Video Output: The Blu-ray disc player features one Composite video output that supports 480i.

1080p/24Hz Compatible: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames-per-second ,the 751BD will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Marvell QDEO Video Scaler: The primary HDMI output also features a high quality Marvell QDEO video scaler (DE2750) with motion adaptive noise reduction for quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. As well as stunning performance with Blu-ray discs, the 751BD delivers unbeatable picture quality from existing DVDs, which can be up-scaled to 1080p resolution.

Note: Video up-conversion over the component output is only available for unencrypted discs such as home video and consumer-created contents. Most commercially pressed DVD discs are CSS-encrypted and will be limited to 480i/480p resolution. This restriction applies to the component output only. The HDMI output is protected with HDCP and has no such restriction.

Source Direct: The 751BD supports a special "Source Direct" output resolution on its HDMI output. This resolution is recommended for use with external video processors or high-end TVs with high quality scalers. In "Source Direct" mode, the player works as a "transport". It decodes video from the discs and then sends the raw video signal in its native resolution and format, without extra processing, to the external video processor or TV. The actual output resolution thus varies by content.

Content Output Resolution
NTSC DVD 480i
Blu-ray Movies 1080p/24Hz
Blu-ray TV Shows & Concerts 1080i
SACD or DVD-Audio 1080i

3D-Ready: The Cambridge Audio 751BD lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection. The Blu-ray player offer three 3D video output  modes.

  • Auto: Outputs 3D if supported both by the disc content and the display. The player automatically checks for the existence of 3D content on the disc and the 3D compatibility of the TV or projector. If both are qualified, the player sends 3D video from its HDMI output terminals, otherwise only 2D video is sent out.  3D-compatible glasses are required with your 3D TV.
  • Forced: Always outputs 3D video format for 3D Blu-ray discs. You might experience a black screen (no video output) if your TV is not 3D compatible.
  • Off: Always outputs 2D video format, even when 3D video exists on the disc. This can guarantee the video quality in case that your TV is not 3D compatible, or some necessary part (such as the 3D glasses) is missing.

Note: You can also set the diagonal screen size of your HDTV.

Deep Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors. This results in much greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables many times more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.

xvYCC: xvYCC color space reproduces a greater range of color than before, showing almost all of the colors that the human eye can detect.

Aspect Ratio: Use this setting to select the screen format to fit your TV screen.

  • 16:9 Wide/Auto: 16:9 (widescreen) as well as 4:3 sources will be displayed in their native aspect ratio. Please note that in this mode 4:3 sources will be displayed with black borders on both sides to maintain the correct 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • 16:9 Wide: Select this screen when connected to a 16:9 widescreen TV set. The full picture will now normally be displayed with no picture cropping (unless the movie itself has black bars recorded into the video).
  • 4:3 Letter Box: You can select this screen when connected to a 4:3 TV set. The full widescreen picture is displayed on the screen with black strips on the top and bottom of the screen
  • 4:3 Pan & Scan: You can select this screen when connected to a 4:3 TV set. The widescreen picture will display on the full screen, but some parts of the video picture will be cut off automatically.

Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the player's picture control parameters and save up to three custom picture modes. You can adjust the following.

  • Brightness: Adjusts the brightness (black level) of the video output.
  • Contrast: Adjusts the contrast (white level ) of the video output.
  • Hue: Adjusts the hue (tint) of the video output.
  • Saturation: Adjust the saturation (color intensity level) of the video output.
  • Sharpness: Sets the images sharpness (Detail/Edge Enhancement) of the video output.
  • Noise Reduction: Applies video noise reduction processing to video output.
  • Color Enhancement: Enhances certain colors in the spectrum of the HDMI 1 video output.
  • Contrast Enhancement: Expands the details in the shadows on the HDMI 1video output.

Audio Features

Five Wolfson (WM8740) 24-bit/192kHz DACs: Five Wolfson WM8740 24-bit/192kHz Digital to Analog converters ensure the 751BD can reproduce the dynamics required for the most elaborate movie & music soundtracks.

Anagram Technologies Q5 192kHz Upsampling: The Cambridge Audio 751BD employs Anagram Technologies Q5 192 kHz upsampling. Q5 Upsampling allows digital audio signals from virtually any audio source to be resampled, resynchronized and retimed to extraordinary levels of detail. In effect, upsampling the digital data stream (up to 192kHz) allows existing "standard" CDs and DVDs to have the enhanced audio clarity, richness and dynamic range that would normally be associated with SACD or DVD-Audio discs.  missing. Three proprietary anagram technologies are included in Q5. These technologies effectively reduce noise artifacts caused by imperfect digital systems and allow the digital signal to closer represent the true analog sound of the studio mastered audio data.

  • Adaptive Time Filtering: Adaptive time filtering allows the system to adapt to small fluctuations in the systems audio master clock. The master clock is the heart of any digital audio system, however as all components that are constructed from physical materials, they will at some point in time deviate from their ideal generalized behavior causing, in this case variation in frequency and system jitter in this important internal timing reference. Typically these variations will not be corrected for, however in Q5 enabled devices the system automatically adapts to these small fluctuations resulting in perfect "glitch" free analog sound even after endless hours of continuous playback.
  • Data-to-System Synchronization: Data-to-System synchronization allows any incoming audio stream to be resynchronized and retimed to a local high quality clock. By using a stable clock reference, the negative effects of inter-component jitter can be minimized. When converting the digital audio to an analog signal through high performance D/A converters, this reduction in jitter has enormous benefits in the level of detail and clarity in the reconstructed analog sound.
  • Innovative Virtual Time-Domain Model: Combing these processes with a virtual time domain model that uses an advanced cubic interpolation algorithm to resample the incoming audio data, timing errors in this signal can be compensated for at amazing levels of accuracy. The end result is tighter, more focused bass, increased stereo imaging, focus and separation for all musical instruments and voices.

Digital Audio Formats: The latest surround-sound formats are supported including decoding of Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio in Stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 variants. In particular support for the true lossless Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio formats provides unprecedented audio fidelity from Blu-ray discs

Pure Audio Mode: You can enjoy higher quality audio by turning off the video processing and output. The Pure Audio mode reduces any potential interference between the video and audio signals

Phase Filter Select: The 751BD employs Cambridge Audio's own proprietary digital filter algorithms with three different filter options available - Linear Phase, Minimum Phase, and Steep. Controlled from one switch on the front-panel, they are extremely clever audiophile topologies specifically developed for audio playback and all offer excellent sound quality, but differ slightly to appeal to a wide range of listening tastes.

  • Linear Phase Filter: The Linear Phase Filter is the same as used in Cambridge Audio's flagship Azur 840C upsampling CD player. It uniquely features 'constant group delay' which delays all audio signals at all frequencies by the same amount - meaning all audio is fully time-coherent at the output.
  • Minimum Phase Filter: The Minimum Phase Filter does not feature constant group delay, but rather has been optimized without feed-forward so that the impulse response exhibits no pre-ringing in the time domain. Many audiophiles have argued that the pre-ringing, as seen in nearly all digital filter designs, may affect the transient attack of percussive instruments. Minimum phase implementation eliminates this and is a technology only seen previously in some extremely high-end CD playback systems
  • Steep Filter: The steep filter removes undistinguishable artifacts via re-calibration for a very slight roll-off at 20kHz, but an ultra-steep drop to the stop-band just after 20kHz.

Audio Outputs: The Cambridge Audio 751BD is equipped with the following analog and digital audio outputs.

  • Digital Audio Output: This unit features a coaxial (RCA) and optical (toslink) digital audio output connection. The coaxial or optical digital audio output can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder (Dolby Digital, DTS), or other component. The digital audio outputs support transfer of Dolby Digital and/or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio.
  • Analog Multi-Channel Audio Output: The 751BD offers a built-in Dolby Digital /DTS decoder with multi-channel analog outputs (7.1ch).
  • 2-Channel Output: In addition to the 7.1-channel analog outputs, the unit features a dedicated stereo audio output for connecting to a stereo analog input on a TV or receiver. Even when the source audio is multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, DVD-Audio, SACD), these jacks will output a downmixed 2-channel signal.

Speaker Management: In the Speaker Management menu you can configure speaker settings such as down-mix mode, number of speakers, their distance, size, trim level, and crossover frequency.

  • Configuration: Choose from Down Mix (converts multi-channel audio to a lesser number of channels), LT/RT (the center and surround channels are decoded and then matrix encoded into the two front channels), Stereo (down-mixes multi-channel audio to 2-channel stereo), 5.1ch (enables 5.1ch decoded audio output), or 7.1ch (enables 7.1ch decoded audio output).
  • Size: The speaker size parameter sets bass filter control for the speakers. Choose Large or Small for your speakers and On or Off for your powered subwoofer.
  • Crossover: When the speaker size is set to "Small", bass frequencies are not passed to the speakers to reduce possible distortion: bass frequencies will instead be redirected to the subwoofer. The available options are 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 150, 200, and 250Hz.
  • Distance: The speaker distance parameters sets delay control for the corresponding audio channel. This delay is used to compensate for the audio propagation time difference caused by the placements of speakers of different distances from the listening position.
  • Trim: The speaker trim level parameters sets the volume of each individual channel. For most accurate results, it is recommended that you use test tones from a calibration disc, such as Digital Video Essentials HD Basics, and a SPL (Sound Pressure Level) meter. The trim level can be set to +/- 10dB in 0.5dB increments.

Dynamic Range Control (DRC): DRC can smooth out the sonic peaks and valleys common with wide-range digital audio. Enabling DRC may make low level audio more audible during low-level listening. Turning off DRC restores the sonic energy present in the original recording.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed and setup the 751BD player with my home theater system. Trying out various digital CD's I find the sound astounding. All the individual instruments come through clearly. With my previous Sony, the sounds were not nearly as distinct. Video quality is also great. Overall extremely pleased.

Pros: Easy set up, wifi capable, simple menus, paper manual. Obviously the sound quality!

Cons: None
