Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Cambridge Audio 752BD Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD, BD-3D, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-Audio
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, HDCD, SACD

Note: This unit supports the playback of both NTSC & PAL encoded discs.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 Mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The 752BD is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet, via the player's Ethernet port.

Note: The tested Blu-ray player contained firmware version 752BDCU-10-1121. Visit Cambridge Audio's Support Site for the latest firmware updates.

AVCHD Playback: The 752BD will play home videos recorded in AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264), a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW discs. AVCHD can also be played from a USB flash memory device connected to the front panel port.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

DVD Audio: DVD Audio is a digital audio format that delivers high-fidelity audio content on a DVD disc. DVD-Audio supports bit depths up to 24-bit and sample rates up to 192 kHz, while CD audio is only 16-bit, 44.1 kHz. Compared to CD audio discs, DVD Audio offers considerable more music storage, higher audio quality, and additional audio channels for surround sound. DVD-Audio offers many possible configurations of audio channels (up to 5.1-channel surround sound).

HDCD: HDCD is a variation of the existing CD standard. By extending the information stored in the CD signal by 4-bits (CDs are based on 16-bit audio technology) to 20-bits, HDCD can extend the sonic capacity of current CD technology to new standards.

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Formats: The Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs.

Media Format File Type
Audio AAC, WMA, MP3, APE, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC (inc. 24 bit 32-192kHz), WAV (inc. 24 bit 32-192kHz)

Video Features

HDMI 1.4a (w/ 4K Support): The Cambridge Audio Blu-ray player is fitted with twin HDMI 1.4 inputs and outputs. With twin HDMI outputs, the 752BD can deliver the same video signal to two display simultaneously. Both HDMI outputs are fully compatible with the HDMI 1.4 standard for 3D, Deep Color, xvYCC, and ARC support. The HDMI outputs support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K.  The Blu-ray player is also fitted with one rear-panel HDMI input and one front-panel MHL-compatible HDMI input which can be up-sampled and up-scaled by the 752BD for the best possible audio or audio-visual experience.

MHL Compatible: The front-panel HDMI port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's front-panel HDMI port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. Your connected smartphone is also recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver.

ARC: ARC allows your HDMI-connected TV to become an audio source to the BD Player allowing you to listen to music or video streaming services that your TV may feature in the best possible quality when up-sampled and output by the 752BD player.

1080p/24Hz Compatible: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames-per-second ,the 752BD will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Marvell QDEO Video Scaler (up to 4K): The primary HDMI output also features a Marvell QDEO scaler with motion adaptive noise reduction and a host of technologies to further improve the picture quality for this output from any source. Up-scaling to 4K is possible for the very latest TVs that support this resolution.

Source Direct: The 752BD supports a special "Source Direct" output resolution on its HDMI output. This resolution is recommended for use with external video processors or high-end TVs with high quality scalers. In "Source Direct" mode, the player works as a "transport". It decodes video from the discs and then sends the raw video signal in its native resolution and format, without extra processing, to the external video processor or TV. The actual output resolution thus varies by content.

Content Output Resolution
NTSC DVD 480i
Blu-ray Movies 1080p/24Hz
Blu-ray TV Shows & Concerts 1080i
SACD or DVD-Audio 1080i

3D-Ready: The Cambridge Audio 752BD lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection. The Blu-ray player offer three 3D video output modes.

  • Auto: Outputs 3D if supported both by the disc content and the display. The player automatically checks for the existence of 3D content on the disc and the 3D compatibility of the TV or projector. If both are qualified, the player sends 3D video from its HDMI output terminals, otherwise only 2D video is sent out. 3D-compatible glasses are required with your 3D TV.
  • Forced: Always outputs 3D video format for 3D Blu-ray discs. You might experience a black screen (no video output) if your TV is not 3D compatible.
  • 2D-3D: Converts 2D (two-dimensional) video content into simulated 3D (three-dimensional) video when connected to a 3D-ready TV, with 3D-glasses.
  • Off: Always outputs 2D video format, even when 3D video exists on the disc. This can guarantee the video quality in case that your TV is not 3D compatible, or some necessary part (such as the 3D glasses) is missing.

Note: You can also set the diagonal screen size of your HDTV.

Deep/xvYCC Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors. This results in much greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables many times more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio. xvYCC color space reproduces a greater range of color than before, showing almost all of the colors that the human eye can detect.

Aspect Ratio: Use this setting to select the screen format to fit your TV screen.

  • 16:9 Wide/Auto: 16:9 (widescreen) as well as 4:3 sources will be displayed in their native aspect ratio. Please note that in this mode 4:3 sources will be displayed with black borders on both sides to maintain the correct 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • 16:9 Wide: Select this screen when connected to a 16:9 widescreen TV set. The full picture will now normally be displayed with no picture cropping (unless the movie itself has black bars recorded into the video).

Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the player's picture control parameters for each HDMI output. You can save up to three customize video modes.

  • Brightness: Adjusts the brightness (black level) of the video output.
  • Contrast: Adjusts the contrast (white level ) of the video output.
  • Hue: Adjusts the hue (tint) of the video output.
  • Saturation: Adjust the saturation (color intensity level) of the video output.
  • Sharpness: Sets the images sharpness (Detail/Edge Enhancement) of the video output.
  • Noise Reduction: Applies video noise reduction processing to video output.
  • Color Enhancement: Enhances certain colors in the spectrum of the HDMI 1 video output.
  • Contrast Enhancement: Expands the details in the shadows on the HDMI 1video output.

Audio Features

Five Wolfson 24-bit/192kHz DACs: All sources, digital or analog, are passed through these five Wolfson DACs (WM8740) which upsample surround and pure stereo audio to 24-bit/192kHz boosting quality and detail.

Anagram Technologies Q5 192kHz Upsampling: The Cambridge Audio 752BD employs Anagram Technologies Q5 192 kHz upsampling. Q5 Upsampling allows digital audio signals from virtually any audio source to be resampled, resynchronized and retimed to extraordinary levels of detail. In effect, upsampling the digital data stream (up to 192kHz) allows inserted discs, network audio, and connected digital audio sources to have the enhanced audio clarity, richness and dynamic range that would normally be associated with SACD or DVD-Audio audiophile formats. Three proprietary anagram technologies are included in Q5. These technologies effectively reduce noise artifacts caused by imperfect digital systems and allow the digital signal to closer represent the true analog sound of the studio mastered audio data.

  • Adaptive Time Filtering: Adaptive time filtering allows the system to adapt to small fluctuations in the systems audio master clock. The master clock is the heart of any digital audio system, however as all components that are constructed from physical materials, they will at some point in time deviate from their ideal generalized behavior causing, in this case variation in frequency and system jitter in this important internal timing reference. Typically these variations will not be corrected for, however in Q5 enabled devices the system automatically adapts to these small fluctuations resulting in perfect "glitch" free analog sound even after endless hours of continuous playback.
  • Data-to-System Synchronization: Data-to-System synchronization allows any incoming audio stream to be resynchronized and retimed to a local high quality clock. By using a stable clock reference, the negative effects of inter-component jitter can be minimized. When converting the digital audio to an analog signal through high performance D/A converters, this reduction in jitter has enormous benefits in the level of detail and clarity in the reconstructed analog sound.
  • Innovative Virtual Time-Domain Model: Combing these processes with a virtual time domain model that uses an advanced cubic interpolation algorithm to resample the incoming audio data, timing errors in this signal can be compensated for at amazing levels of accuracy. The end result is tighter, more focused bass, increased stereo imaging, focus and separation for all musical instruments and voices.

Analog + Digital Outputs: The Cambridge Audio 752BD is equipped with the following analog and digital audio outputs.

  • Digital Audio Output: This unit features a coaxial (RCA) and optical (toslink) digital audio output connection. The coaxial or optical digital audio output can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder (Dolby Digital, DTS), or other component. The digital audio outputs support transfer of Dolby Digital and/or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio.
  • Analog Multi-Channel Audio Output: The 752BD offers a built-in Dolby Digital/DTS decoder with multi-channel analog outputs (7.1ch).
  • 2-Channel Output: In addition to the 7.1-channel analog outputs, the unit features a dedicated stereo audio output for connecting to a stereo analog input on a TV or receiver. Even when the source audio is multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, DVD-Audio, SACD), these jacks will output a downmixed 2-channel signal.

Two Digital Inputs: The Cambridge Audio 752BD is fitted with an optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital input that can be up-sampled and output by the 752BD player for the best possible audio experience.

Digital Audio Formats: The latest surround-sound formats are supported including decoding of Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio in Stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 variants. In particular support for the true lossless Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio formats provides unprecedented audio fidelity from Blu-ray discs

Pure Audio Mode: You can enjoy higher quality audio by turning off the video processing and output. The Pure Audio mode reduces any potential interference between the video and audio signals

Phase Filter Select: The 752BD employs Cambridge Audio's own proprietary digital filter algorithms with three different filter options available - Linear Phase, Minimum Phase, and Steep. Controlled from one switch on the front-panel, they are extremely clever audiophile topologies specifically developed for audio playback and all offer excellent sound quality, but differ slightly to appeal to a wide range of listening tastes.

  • Linear Phase Filter: The Linear Phase Filter is the same as used in Cambridge Audio's flagship Azur 840C upsampling CD player. It uniquely features 'constant group delay' which delays all audio signals at all frequencies by the same amount - meaning all audio is fully time-coherent at the output.
  • Minimum Phase Filter: The Minimum Phase Filter does not feature constant group delay, but rather has been optimized without feed-forward so that the impulse response exhibits no pre-ringing in the time domain. Many audiophiles have argued that the pre-ringing, as seen in nearly all digital filter designs, may affect the transient attack of percussive instruments. Minimum phase implementation eliminates this and is a technology only seen previously in some extremely high-end CD playback systems
  • Steep Filter: The steep filter removes undistinguishable artifacts via re-calibration for a very slight roll-off at 20kHz, but an ultra-steep drop to the stop-band just after 20kHz.

Speaker Management: In the Speaker Management menu you can configure speaker settings such as down-mix mode, number of speakers, their distance, size, trim level, and crossover frequency.

  • Configuration: Choose from Down Mix (converts multi-channel audio to a lesser number of channels), LT/RT (the center and surround channels are decoded and then matrix encoded into the two front channels), Stereo (down-mixes multi-channel audio to 2-channel stereo), 5.1ch (enables 5.1ch decoded audio output), or 7.1ch (enables 7.1ch decoded audio output).
  • Size: The speaker size parameter sets bass filter control for the speakers. Choose Large or Small for your speakers and On or Off for your powered subwoofer.
  • Crossover: When the speaker size is set to "Small", bass frequencies are not passed to the speakers to reduce possible distortion: bass frequencies will instead be redirected to the subwoofer. The available options are 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 150, 200, and 250Hz.
  • Distance: The speaker distance parameters sets delay control for the corresponding audio channel. This delay is used to compensate for the audio propagation time difference caused by the placements of speakers of different distances from the listening position.
  • Trim: The speaker trim level parameters sets the volume of each individual channel. For most accurate results, it is recommended that you use test tones from a calibration disc, such as Digital Video Essentials HD Basics, and a SPL (Sound Pressure Level) meter. The trim level can be set to +/- 10dB in 0.5dB increments.

Dynamic Range Control (DRC): DRC can smooth out the sonic peaks and valleys common with wide-range digital audio. Enabling DRC may make low level audio more audible during low-level listening. Turning off DRC restores the sonic energy present in the original recording.

Network/USB Functions

1GB Internal Memory: The Blu-ray player features a 1GB internal memory for store of Bonus View and BD-Live content.

  • Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view additional content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing. The necessary 1GB memory is built-in; more memory can be added via the front panel USB port.
  • BD-Live Ready: BD-Live technology allows you to download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers, movie-based games, and more using a broadband internet connection. The Cambridge Audio Blu-ray player features an Ethernet port to connect to the internet via your home network. The necessary 1GB memory is built-in; more memory can be added via the front panel USB port.

Convenience Features

Quick Start: Quick Start speeds up the load time on movies, so discs start faster after they're inserted into the Blu-ray player. The Cambridge Audio Blu-ray player has a start-up time of approximately 5.7 seconds in Quick Start mode (16.3 seconds in normal mode). In Quick Start mode, it takes approximately 23.1 seconds for a Blu-ray disc to begin playback (27.9 seconds in normal mode).

Note: The Start Up/Play Back Time tests were started with the Blu-ray player initially turned off & in standby mode. The Start Up Time test was stopped when the player's Home Menu screen appeared. The Play Back Time test was stopped when the Blu-ray disc began playback.

Acoustically Damped Chassis: Aesthetics and premium build quality are further strengths and Cambridge Audio's trademark wrap-around casework houses the 752BD's proprietary engineering within a low resonance, acoustically damped chassis.

On-Screen Display w/ Easy Setup Wizard: The Cambridge Audio Blu-ray disc player incorporates an on-screen display menu system which makes various operations and menu selections visible on your connected television set. When the player is turned on for the first time, an Easy Setup Wizard screen will appear. This is a series of guided instructions designed to configure the basic settings for the unit.

Multi-Disc Resume: The player automatically remembers the current position for a disc when playback is interrupted. Operations such as Open/Eject or turning Power off will cause the player to save the current playing position for that disc. The position is memorized even after turning off the unit or changing the disc. When the next time the same disc is played back, the player will recognize the saved playing position. Playback will automatically resume from this saved position. However if you wish to cancel the automatic resume and start playback from the beginning, you may press the STOP button when prompted. The player can remember playback position for up to five discs. When the sixth disc is memorized, the oldest one is replaced.

Note: Some Blu-ray discs do not support resuming and will always play from the beginning.

Parental Controls: Some movies contain scenes that may not be suitable for children to view. Many of these discs contain parental control information that applies to the complete disc or to certain scenes on the disc. Movies and scenes are rated depending on the country. Some discs offer more suitable scenes as an alternative. Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit (DVD: Kid/G/PG/PG-13/PGR/R/NC17/Adult/Off, BD: 1-12), preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the levels you set, and it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

Timers: The Blu-ray player offers two timer functions.

  • Sleep Timer: This allows the 752BD to turn itself off after a specific amount of time (30, 45, 60, 90, or 120 mins).
  • Auto Power Off. The player will automatically shutdown after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Remote Control

IR Remote Control: The Cambridge Audio 752BD includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the Blu-ray player. The remote can also be used to control basic functions (Power/Source/Volume) of a Cambridge Audio azur amplifier or AV receiver. The buttons on the remote illuminate with a press of a single button. The remote comes with a convenient table-top stand.

HDMI Control: When a TV supporting HDMI control is connected to the 752BD via an HDMI cable, it is possible to use the television's remote control to perform such operations as: power on/off, function switching, and volume adjustment.

IR Emitter In: The Blu-ray player's 3.5mm IR emitter input allows modulated IR commands from multi-room systems or IR repeater systems to be received by the 752BD.

RS232 Port: The player's RS232 port is used for control of the 752BD in custom install situations from an external controller. A full protocol is available for the 752 BD on Cambridge Audio's website.

Cambridge Audio Azur 752BD

Written By Steve A, Albert Lea, MN on Friday, March 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I debated between the CA752BD and the OppoBDP-105 and went with the CA. They are both in the same price range however I feel my choice was good because of the quality this machine does with Blu-ray Discs. Wow! This thing puts movie night to a whole different league. The audio and visual production to the screen is phenomenal. I didn't realize a blu-ray player could be this awesome! Now I need a 4K TV and I'm set...
Pros:
Well worth the money that I have invested towards years of enjoyable blu-ray magic!
Cons:
NONE!!

Strong Performer

Written By JohnathanP, Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, January 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Cambridge Azur 752BD to start the process of upgrading our home theater system. The main purpose for buying the Azur was to bring quality 2 channel sound to our system. I read many reviews comparing the Azur to the Oppo BDP-105. I decided to go with the Azur because of the use of the Wolfson DAC's and it's highly reviewed sound quality.

I am now 2 weeks into using the Azur and I can say that it has completely met my expectations for sound and video quality. It's 2 channel sound quality is superb, very detailed yet not overly bright or harsh. The soundstage is excellent with a great sense of depth. Video quality is also excellent as is noted in many of the reviews online. I am extremely pleased with it's performance at this point.

Two great features of the unit are the ability to add an external hard drive with audio and video material and the ability to add a streaming device via the HDMI/MHL port. It works extremely well with the Roku stick although it is not certified. I also attached a 2GB hard drive to the USB port and seamlessly was able to access audio and video on the stored drive. Lossless audio format playback is flawless and every bit as good (if not better than the source material).

I do have one complaint. There is no iOS app for controlling playback from the attached media drives. This means that you must have your video display on in order to access stored media. This is a serious drawback that exists for the Oppo. Hopefully CA will fix this.
Pros:
Fantastic sound and video. HDMI/MHL port works with Roku stick. Great connections for 7.1 and 2 channel analog sound. Flawlessly worked with external hard drive and a variety of stored media.
Cons:
No iOS app to allow control of attached media storage playback. (This is offered on the Oppo). This means that you must have your display on even when listening to stored audio only. It is also very difficult to get in touch with Cambridge Audio about missing features or feature requests. They have no way to contact them via email or web. Called Crutchfield and the tech support number that they gave me at CA was incorrect. So far my experience is one of poor support.

Awesome Blu-ray

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great purchase. A breeze to set-up, even in a mixed system comprising both old and new electronics. Follow-up support on an integration issue was very much appreciated.
Pros:
Excellent player, easy to set up and easy to use.
Cons:
A tad pricey

  • I have this player for several months and use almost every day for several hours. I have not noticed any decrease in quality or any overheating. [ DMITRY   Sep 17, 2014 ]
  • I have had zero issues or complaints with this player. I am extremely happy with the picture quality and its fidelity. [ JOHN P   Sep 16, 2014 ]
  • After a year of ownership, the unit still works well just like it was new. Picture is great and the sound is superb. The truth is that I brought this unit to replace the combination of my older CD transport and D/A converter as an audio gear. The Azur 752 BD overall Hi-fi sound is just as good and if not better and more musical then the older super expensive HI End transporter and converter at a fraction of the cost... I also like the the construction, the heft and the appearance of this unit! [ KOW LOON   Sep 16, 2014 ]
  • hi Peter well so far soo good since I purchased this player I have had it for a little over a month and it feels solid. I feel satisfied the video quality is very good the audio is superb just purchased a 4 k dvd movie and it plays it vey well you can see the difference ... [ louis   Sep 16, 2014 ]
