About the Cambridge Audio Aero 6

Dave Bar

Traditional styling with radical technology

The BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) driver used in Cambridge's Aero Series features a flat speaker surface that combines the traditional "pistonic" movement of speaker cones with a "bending-wave" movement to create sound. This allows BMR drivers to cover a much wider frequency range than conventional tweeters.

Traditional styling with radical technology

Use Cambridge Audio's Aero 6 floor-standing speakers to create a stereo music or home theater haven in your living space. This potent tower can transport you to the front row of a big rock concert, or to a magical forest where you're immersed in the action with your favorite big-screen heroes. The Aero 6 delivers all the hard-hitting bass you'd expect from a tower, thanks to its powerful dual 6-1/2" woofers. But what you might not expect is this speaker's exceptionally accurate mids and highs, and expansive soundstage. That's because in place of a conventional tweeter design is a radical "BMR" driver that gives the Aero 6 its key sonic advantage. It's this same technology that makes all of Cambridge Audio's Aero Series speakers a fantastic choice for savoring stereo music or immersive surround sound.

Cambridge Audio's radical BMR driver design gives the Aero 6 exceptional wide-range sound and performance.

The "BMR" advantage for natural, spacious sound

The BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) driver used in Cambridge's Aero Series features a flat speaker surface that combines the traditional "pistonic" movement of speaker cones with a "bending-wave" movement to create sound. This allows BMR drivers to cover a much wider frequency range than conventional tweeters.

Better midrange clarity

Why does that matter? Because with most speaker systems, the crossover point between the tweeter and woofer occurs in the critical midrange frequencies, where human ears are most sensitive to distortion and differences in sound between driver types. Aero 6's crossover point occurs all the way down at 250 Hz, giving you clearer, more natural sound. And since the BMR driver handles all of the highs and midrange, that means the woofer can focus on what they do best — bass.

Broad spacious soundstage

That's not the only advantage of BMR technology. This innovative driver construction also allows Aero series speakers to spread sound over a much broader area than conventional speakers. That extra-wide dispersion means you can put your speakers where you want and still enjoy deep, spacious stereo or surround sound throughout your entire room. This makes Aero speakers ideal for room layouts where your speaker placement options are less than optimal.

Built to perform

Aero series cabinets are not only discreet and classic-looking, they're engineered for better performance. Each solidly braced MDF enclosure is computer-designed to help minimize standing waves and prevent unwanted resonance from coloring the sound. Heavy-duty, gold-plated binding posts make it easy to connect the high-quality speaker wire of your choice for top-notch performance.

Product Research

Features

BMR Driver: The Cambridge Audio Aero 6 floor-standing speaker employs a 2" Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR) driver to seamlessly cover the frequency range from 250Hz to 22kHz, making it perfect for reproducing movie and music soundtracks with the greatest clarity and neutrality. By replacing the traditional tweeter with a BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) driver, the Aero 6 floor-standing speaker offers several key advantages over conventional center-channel speakers.

  • 250Hz Crossover Point: Using the BMR shifts the crossover point between tweeter and woofer away from the usual 3kHz, right at the middle of the human ear's most sensitive hearing range, to a less problematic 250Hz. The result is a more natural, immersive and coherent sound.
  • Wider Soundstage: BMRs also offer a wider sound, so speakers can be placed in a wider range of places while still delivering excellent stereo and surround effects; making these speakers ideal for modern homes.
  • Accurate Bass Response: Using a BMR driver also means that Aero 2's woofers get to really focus on the midbass and bass frequencies for a more cinematic, immersive sound with accurate bass.

Custom-Designed Midbass Drivers: The Aero 6 floor-standing speaker employs dual 6.5" bass drivers. These cone drivers are specifically designed to complement the BMR driver, so they can concentrate on lower bass and midbass frequencies. These twin bass drivers have been perfectly optimized to produce deep and powerful bass.

Rigid Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Aero 6 floor-standing speaker cabinet is designed not only to look classic, discreet and stylish, but also is constructed using CAD (Computer Aided Design) techniques and critical bracing to minimize distortion and maximize audio quality. The enclosure is constructed of MDF to help eliminate resonance and distortion. The enclosure employs a front-firing port for improved efficiency and bigger bass output.

Binding Posts: The Cambridge Audio Aero 6 floor-standing loudspeaker is equipped with a set of binding post terminals. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana-plugs (single only). The terminals are color-coded (black/red) to distinguish between positive and negative.

Placement: Ideally the speakers and listening position should be located equal distances apart. The speakers should also be placed at ear level and slightly angled toward the main listening position. In addition, the speaker should be positioned at least 2" away from the back wall. If the speakers are placed close to a wall, the bass may become too strong. The included foam insert will reduce the bass output when inserted into the speaker's port.

Mounting Feet: The Cambridge Audio Aero 6 floor-standing speaker comes with four rubber feet and four spiked feet for added stability on your hardwood, tile, or carpeted floors. The rubber feet are ideal for hardwood and tile flooring; the additional rubber feet add approximately 0.375" to the height of the powered sub. The spiked feet are great for carpeted flooring and are adjustable in case you have uneven floors. 4 flat discs (which go underneath the spiked feet) are included if you choose to use the spikes on hardwood or tile floors in order to prevent damage. The spiked feet add approximately 1.25" to the height of the powered subwoofer.

Note: The Aero 6 floor-standing speaker's base must be attached to the speaker (using included hardware) prior to installing the mounting feet.

Q
Are the speaker boxes MDF with Walnut veneers or are they MDF wrapped in laminate walnut look?

A
The speakers appear to be MDF wrapped in a laminate look, however they are very well made and the sound is wonderful. Best speakers I have ever owned.
