On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

Cambridge Audio One+
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Superp sound & packed with features! It seems as thougth the folks over in the UK wanted to build a unit with as many new features as possible, but really haven't had the time to go back and refine things. This unit has extremely low THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) which allows you to turn it up more, and sounds better than other units with 2x the power. I love the RDS (Radio Data Service) that displays artist & title. To get that feature in a stereo along with a great amp, alarm clock, USB port & a CD that reads MP3-encoded CD's, you'd have to spend $799 + up.
Pros: RDS, very low %THD, reads SD cards, USB sticks & MP3-encoded CDs.
Cons: Functions are still primitive: (1) You can not scroll through sub-directories & view the songs. (2) It only displays the folder number instead of the folder name. (3) It tunes in 100kHz increments instead of 200kHz increments (ie. xxx.1, xxx.2 & xxx.3 instead of xxx.1, xxx.3 & xxx.5) (4) The clock is in a 24-hour format, so it'll display 18:25 instead of 6:25pm (5) I had to return my unit in less than a week because the display would keep shutting off.
Awesome Bang for the Buck
I was looking for something with less "boxed" sound than the Bose and in the same price range with iPod docking and a CD player.. Finally found it (and more) with this Cambridge Audio unit. I run it as a 2.1 with a Cambridge sub and 2 PSB speakers. The sound is pretty amazing and surprisingly accurate for such a small unit. When I am again in the market for a new home theater system, you can bet your sweet bippy I will look at Cambridge Audio units.
Pros: everything about it
Cons: nothing I can think of
Just add a good quality pair of bookshelf speakers and you are sorted with great sound and entertainment with multiple formats, highly recommended.
Pros: It's an awesome all in one gadget. Small enough to take on your holidays and perfect for the bedroom without your better half getting annoyed with you.
