About the Cambridge Audio CXU

Jeff Miller

Go-to player for both film buffs and music lovers

I always look forward to an activity we call "demo days" here at Crutchfield. A couple of my co-workers, Travis and Dave, set up special gear combinations in the Crutchfield Labs for us all to enjoy. They recently used the Cambridge Audio CXU Universal disc player as the source for three different demo day setups —  a sweet home theater (complete with popcorn), a high-end 2-channel speaker configuration, and an audiophile headphone/headphone amp combo. This versatile player excelled in all three settings.

These informal demos often give us real-world insights into how our gear performs. When vendors come by and show off new gear, they will (understandably) pick and choose content that plays to the strengths of the product. The CXU player didn't have that luxury, but handled all the high-resolution music and movies we threw at it with grace. From Blu-ray discs to our thumb drives loaded with FLAC, DSD, and Apple Lossless files, everything performed at full potential.

Movies and shows look stellar from discs...

The Cambridge Audio CXU can't play the new Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, but can upconvert the picture on standard Blu-rays and DVDs to near-4K resolution. It will also maximize the picture on a 1080p screen, all thanks to the powerful Darbee Visual Presence™ video processing. A custom algorithm analyzes images, detects areas with dark/light transitions, then increases contrast between lighter and darker details within the image. This emphasizes fine details and creates an enhanced sense of visual depth. Onscreen custom settings let you further dial in the image to your standards and preference.

...or other video sources

And if you want everything you watch to look clear and sharp? Connect other components to the Cambridge Audio CXU player's receiver-like digital inputs, and run them through the incredible Darbee video processing. The rear-panel HDMI input is perfect for a gaming console, cable box, Apple TV®, or streaming video sticks. And the front-panel HDMI input is MHL-compatible, so you can even plug in a compatible smartphone or tablet.

The company is called Cambridge Audio for a reason

While everything we played on the CXU looked amazing, what really jumped out at us was the sound. Movie soundtracks and effects felt gripping. And running through the audiophile-grade Wolfson DACs, our music sounded full and detailed. But not just our high-res tunes — Cambridge's sophisticated Adapted Time Filter technology upsamples all music to 24-bit/192kHz resolution. With full audio mode, you can turn off all video circuitry to eliminate any electronic interference or noise. You'll also find coaxial and optical digital audio inputs for connecting other gear and music devices.

Cambridge Audio CXU-BK back

The Cambridge Audio CXU Universal player has a number of inputs and outputs, including analog multichannel outputs for up to 7.1 channels of surround sound.

Fits in well with your existing setup

Another advantage to setting up our own demos is we get to mix and match gear. Naturally, this player sounds pristine with Cambridge Audio's excellent CX-series components and amps. But we learned that the CXU plays well with others, too. It has a generous array of connections, including two HDMI outputs. Using the player's stereo RCA outputs, we connected it to NAD Master Series separate components, and listened to music through a pair of MartinLogan Motion 40 speakers.

A high-res version of Shady Grove by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman sounded incredibly clean and transparent. It's a well-recorded acoustic album that has the casual feel of old friends playing music together — almost as if you're eavesdropping. The CXU helped really pull the detail out of the recording. I could feel the laid-back atmosphere between songs. Then on the track "Louis Collins", things got intense as vivid mandolin plucks were juxtaposed with strummed banjos, and deep, soulful vocals.

Solidly built and Wi-Fi ready

The Cambridge CXU's brushed black aluminum front-panel and metal frame also help to complement heavy-duty amps and receivers. The strong build provides a solid foundation that cuts down on unwanted resonance while discs spin quietly and efficiently. Even the remote feels substantial — hefty yet lined with soft rubber for a satisfying grip.

This player is also Internet-ready, with an Ethernet port and a supplied Wi-Fi adapter. Pop the adapter in one of the three USB ports and you can stream music, videos and photos from a networked PC or network attached storage (NAS) device.

Disc & USB Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Cambridge Audio CXU universal disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, SACD, HDCD, CD-R, CD-RW

Blu-ray Disc: Blu-ray provides these key features and advantages.

  • 1080p Video Resolution: Blu-ray disc delivers full 1080p video resolution to provide pristine picture quality.
  • 25GB/50GB Capacity: Blu-ray disc offers up to 5x the capacity of standard DVDs; 25GB for single layer disc and 50GB for dual layer disc.
  • 7.1ch Audio: Blu-ray disc provides as many as 7.1 channels of native, uncompressed surround sound for crystal-clear audio entertainment.
  • Enhanced Interactivity: Enjoy such capabilities as seamless menu navigation, bonus features, and network/internet connectivity.
  • DVD Compatible: Blu-ray disc players enable you to continue to view and enjoy your existing DVD library.

Blu-ray 3D: Blu-ray 3D is the Blu-ray disc video format for 3-dimensional (3D) video playback developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). Supporting Full HD (1080p), so you can enjoy high quality 3D video. TV and Blu-ray titles are also required to be 3D compatible to enjoy the 3D experience. Adding a 3D capable A/V Receiver will provide a more engaging audio and video consumer experience.

DVD-Audio: DVD-Audio is an extension of the highly popular DVD format, distinguished by its capability to deliver high quality multi-channel audio capability previously unavailable in traditional packaged audio media.

SACD: Super Audio CD uses a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range, some 64x higher resolution then CD , Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just can't hear on a normal CD.

3 USB Ports: The CXU is equipped with three USB 2.0 (type-A) ports, one on the front of the unit and two on the back. You may use any USB port to plug in a USB mass storage class (MSC) device loaded with digital music, movies, and photo files. USB drives must be formatted with the FAT, FAT32 or NTFS file system.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear panel Ethernet terminal. Occasionally, Cambridge Audio may release new firmware for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Check Cambridge Audio's website for the latest firmware & software updates.

Video Section

HDMI 1.4a: The Cambridge Audio CXU universal disc player is equipped with twin HDMI 1.4a outputs and dual HDMI 1.4a inputs.

  • Twin HDMI Outputs: Separately configurable, twin HDMI outputs let you send high quality video to multiple displays, or 3D video to a display and separate HDMI audio to a non-3D AV receiver. For projector users, you can connect one HDMI output to a projector for home theater use and the other to a TV for casual viewing. Both HDMI outputs support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K video signals.
  •  Dual HDMI Inputs: The CXU provides two HDMI inputs (one on the front-panel and one on the rear-panel) to connect external devices to take further advantage of its excellent audio and video processing. Both HDMI inputs accept up to 1080p high-definition video signal. The front HDMI input even supports MHL, for mobile device playback from smartphones or a digital camcorder.
Notes: The universal disc player does not feature any analog video inputs or outputs; such as composite, component, or S-video.

DARBEE Visual Presence Technology: The Cambridge Audio CXU uses DARBEE Visual Presence technology to deliver stunning video playback.  DARBEE Visual Presence technology can be applied each HDMI input and for any digital content via USB. Processing is adjustable, allowing you to customize the visual enhancement to suit your needs. And for ultimate flexibility, you can set your preferred DARBEE mode individually for each of the different video inputs.

4K Up-Scaling: The Cambridge Audio CXU universal disc player further enhances your home theater experience with 4x the resolution of Full HD 1080p, by up-scaling all video sources to 4K (3840 x 2160) output resolution.

1080p/24p Playback: Many Blu-ray Discs are recorded at 24 frames-per-second (fps), the same frame rate as the original movie's theatrical release. The CXU can faithfully redeliver the original frames using 1080p 24Hz output (compatible display required) for smoother motion and a flicker-free, film-like home theater experience. DVD 24P Conversion allows you to enable 24Hz frame rate conversion for DVD for smoother motion picture experience.

3D-Video Ready: The Cambridge Audio CXU lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

x.v.Color: x.v.Color reproduces a wider range of color than the HDTV standard, showing almost all of the colors that the human eye can detect. Currently there is no x.v.Color software available on Blu-ray, but the CXU is ready to take advantage of x.v.Color discs when they become available.

Deep Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors are displayed. The CXU can provide 4,096 shades of each of the three primary colors, for a total of 68.7 billion possible colors. This results in greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.

Picture Settings: You can fine-tune the universal disc player's brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, &  noise reduction. You can create and store up to 3 picture setting modes to suit a variety of viewing conditions and content types. The universal disc player also offers more advanced picture settings like Detail Enhancement (which further enhances contrast), Edge Enhancement (which further enhances sharpness), & Video Smoothing (which further enhances smooth video motion).

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

5 Wolfson DACs + ATF Audio Upsampling: The CXU features 5 separate Wolfson WM8740 DACs and Cambridge Audio's proprietary ATF audio upsampling (Adaptive Time Filtering). Wired or wireless and whatever input, or file quality, the CXU upsamples all audio to 24-bit/192kHz, for stunning hi-res performance. Digital jitter, which affects all digital music is taken care of by ATF for exceptional sound. '

7.1ch & 2Ch Analog Outputs: Make the most of the Wolfson DACs and audio upsampling on-board, by connecting the CXU's multichannel analog audio outputs (7.1ch) to the multichannel inputs of the perfectly matched CXR200 AV Receiver, for the highest quality digital to analog conversion and 24-bit/192kHz audio upsampling. A dedicated 2-channel analogue stereo output guarantees the best possible stereo sound. The analog outputs can be set to fixed or variable giving you the option of connecting the player directly to a power amplifier without a preamp.

Digital Audio Formats: The universal disc player's HDMI output is capable of multi-channel bitstream (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital, and DTS) and multi-channel PCM output. The optical and coaxial digital outputs pass either Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, or 2-channel PCM.

  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD delivers lossless studio master quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment. The BDP-103 supports bit-stream output of Dolby TrueHD via its HDMI 1.4a output. It can also internally decode Dolby TrueHD into LPCM and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus audio formats are also supported.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio delivers an auditory experience that matches the lifelike images of high-definition video with up to 7.1ch that are bit-for-bit identical to the studio master. The BDP-103 supports bit-stream output of DTS-HD Master Audio. It can also internally decode DTS-HD Master Audio and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS Digital Surround are also supported.

Digital Audio Inputs & Outputs: The Cambridge Audio CXU universal disc player provides Optical & Coaxial digital inputs, along with Optical & Coaxial digital outputs.

  • Optical & Coax Digital  Outputs: For simple and easy connection to more traditional A/V receivers, the CXU features both optical and coaxial outputs for digital audio. The optical and coaxial digital inputs support 48k LPCM, 96k LPCM, 192k PCM, and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS). Due to bandwidth limitations, high resolution audio formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. A reduced resolution version of the same audio track will be output instead.
  • Optical & Coax Digital Inputs: The Cambridge Audio CXU's optical (toslink) digital input and coaxial (RCA) digital input allows it to act as a high quality upsampling Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) to improve the sound from other devices, such as set top boxes, games consoles, or disc players. The optical and coaxial digital connections support up to 24-bit/192kHz, 2ch PCM audio.

Audio Format Chart: The following chart provides a reference to what type of audio signal can be expected (when Secondary Audio is off):

ARC (Audio Return Channel): Audio Return Channel (ARC) is a feature introduced in HDMI v1.4 which allows you to send digital audio signals from the television back to the player or your receiver. Instead of listening through the TV speakers, ARC allows the sound to be processed and produced by your home theater audio system.

Pure Audio Mode: You can enjoy higher quality music audio by turning off the video processing and output. The Pure Audio mode reduces any potential interference between the video and audio signals. Because HDMI carries audio together with video, the HDMI video signal cannot be completely turned off. A black screen is transmitted instead to minimize any potential interference.

A/V Sync: Allows you to add a slight delay to the audio so it is synchronized to the video. The delay can be adjusted in 10ms steps and within the range of -100ms to +200ms. The delayed time will be applied to all output terminals including HDMI 1 and 2, Coaxial, Optical, and 7.1 outputs.

Dynamic Range Control (DRC): DRC can smooth out the sonic peaks and valleys common with wide-range digital audio. Enabling DRC may make low level audio more audible during low-level listening. The Dynamic Range Compression is applied on the analog audio output; it also works on the digital audio output (HDMI, Coaxial and Optical) when the audio format is set to PCM.

Down Mix Mode: Down mix is the process of converting multi-channel audio to less number of channels. For example, converting a 5.1ch source to stereo, or converting a 7.1ch source to 5.1ch. Down mixing allows the audio output from the player to match the exact number of speakers available in your home theater. The following down mix modes are available.

  • LT/RT: Left Total/Right Total. The center and surround channels are mixed into the two front channels according to the LT/RT matrix. A Dolby Pro Logic receiver will decode the two-channel audio into surround audio.
  • Stereo: This mode down-mixes multi-channel audio to 2-channel stereo output. For original stereo content the output will not change. For original multi-channel content the surround and center channels will be mixed with the left and right front channels. Recommended for use with TV sets or stereo receiver/amplifiers.
  • 5.1Ch: This mode enables 5.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. If the source content has more channels, the surround back channels will be mixed into the surround channels.
  • 7.1Ch: This mode enables 7.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. For 6.1ch contents, the left and right surround back speakers will both output the same surround back audio channel.

Speaker Settings: In the Speaker Setting menu you can configure speaker distance, speaker size, and trim level.

  • Test Tone: Test tone is a special group of artificially-created sounds that are used to test your audio speaker system and help to identify any wiring faults.
  • Speaker Size: The speaker size parameter sets bass filtering control for the speakers. The options are:
    • Large: Bass frequencies are passed to the speakers.
    • Small: Bass frequencies are not passed to the speakers to reduce possible distortion. If the subwoofer is available, bass frequencies are redirected to the subwoofer.
    • On (for subwoofer only): Specifies that a subwoofer is available
    • Off: Speaker for the corresponding position does not exist. Audio for the missing speaker is redirected to other speakers or discarded if redirection is not possible.
  • Speaker Distance: The speaker distance parameters set delay control for the corresponding audio channel. The delay is used to compensate for the audio time difference caused by the placement of speakers.
  • Trim Level: The speaker trim level parameters sets the volume of each individual channel. Channel trim is generally not required since most A/V receivers have the capability to adjust.
Network & Bluetooth Connectivity

Wired or Wireless Network Compatible: The Cambridge Audio CXU universal disc player offers a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (WiFi dongle) connection to your home network for play back of  audio, video, or photo files from UPnP and DLNA servers and from NAS drives; plus online services like YouTube & Picasa.

Standby Modes: The universal disc player offers two standby modes. The Energy Efficient mode only use 0.5W of power in standby, but the player's startup is slower. In Quick Start mode, the player starts up significantly faster but uses more power in standby.

  • Start Up/Play Back Time In Energy Efficient Mode: Start-up time of approximately 15.7 seconds, and playback time of approximately 24.3 seconds.
  • Start Up/Play Back Time In Quick Start Mode: Start-up time of approximately 8.3 seconds, and playback time of approximately 19.1 seconds.
Note: The Start Up/Play Back Time tests were started with the player initially turned off and in standby mode. The Start Up Time test was stopped when the player's Home Menu screen appeared. The Play Back Time test was stopped when the Blu-ray disc began playback.

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit based on the age of the viewer, preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the level you set, and it will require you to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

Auto Power Off: The universal disc player will automatically shut down after 30 minutes of inactivity. This can help to reduce power consumption and increase player life.
