Our take on the OSN OS-500

by Woody Sherman

Shoot in low light — or explore exciting time-lapse photography concepts — with the portable and convenient OSN OS-500 deluxe lightweight tripod. It features a three-way "fluid effect" panhead that is designed to smooth out live moves when shooting motion video. An included quick-release mount attaches to your camera or camcorder's base and makes it possible to change from a fixed to mobile shooting posture in seconds.

The center column is adjustable via a geared cranking mechanism, for easy height adjustment. Non-slip feet give you a secure platform on most surfaces. And an incorporated bubble level makes it possible to properly set your vertical orientation in moments.

Highlights:

  • supports digital cameras and camcorders weighing up to 4.5 lbs.
  • maximum height: 57"
  • 3-way fluid effect pan head for smooth camera movements
  • geared center column
  • 3-section legs with quick lever leg locks
  • quick-release plate for quickly mounting your camera
  • retracted length: 22.25"
  • weight: 2.4 lbs.

Features

Overview: The OSN OS-500 is a deluxe lightweight tripod for shooting film, digital, or video cameras. It has a 3-way panhead with a quick-release platform, a geared center column, and non-slip rubber feet. The tripod comes in a handy vinyl carrying case.

3-way Panhead: The OS-500 is equipped with a 3-way fluid head, which can pan, tilt, and rotate 90° for vertical (portrait) photos. It has a quick-release plate with a standard 1/4" camera screw. The plate lets you quickly remove the camera from the tripod, and locks into the head with the shoe lever when returned to the tripod. The head has a single bubble level to help you get your pictures level perfect.

3-Section Aluminum Legs: The 3-section telescoping legs include quick lever leg locks for quick and easy leg positioning. The legs have radial leg braces for added stability. The non-slip rubber feet provide steady, free-standing support. The self-leveling feet have a ball-and-socket design for improved stability.

Geared Center Column: The geared center column is equipped with a hand crank to make it easy and convenient to raise the panhead to the desired picture taking height.

Handle: The OS-500 has a convenient carrying handle that allows you to easily move the camera to a new shooting position.

Accessory Hook: The tripod features an accessory hook on the bottom of the center column. This can be used to hang a camera bag, purse, or other items to keep them off the ground or floor. You can also attach a weight to the tripod for maximum stability.

Lightweight, but packed

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 4/3/2012 10:39:00 AM

This is a lightweight tripod indeed. But that doesn't mean it's stripped-down. There are plenty of extras that make the OS-500 ideal for outdoor use.

First, the feet are in ball sockets, so they can provide a more stable base on uneven terrain. Speaking about unevenness, there's a level built into the base to ensure the mount's perpendicular to the ground. And a second level under the quick-release plate is a welcome help for setting the mount properly.

I also like the portability of this mount. There's a handle just under the brace so I can grab it and go. And if I'm going for more than a few steps, I can just throw it all into the travel bag and start hiking.

Great Value!!!

Written By TJ, VA on Thursday, February 27, 2014

Burned through two crappy tripods from another retailer. Finally broke down and went to Crutchfield to pick-up something a little more durable. Although this product was only $15 more than the tripod I purchased previously from the other retailer, it is considerably better built. It's not top notch, but at this price it's a bargain. Should serve well under light to moderate use - unlike the ones from the other retailer that will fall apart in your hands under light use because the plastic parts are so cheap and thin.
Pros:
Affordable and durable.
Cons:
Not large, but not super portable either.

Inexpensive and Light

Written By DMA, Dallas, TX on Sunday, June 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For what it is, this is a great little tripod. If you're looking for something that will hold a heavy piece of equipment on a blustery day, this probably isn't for you, but for most of us using lighter-weight equipment, it does fine. The head locks down pretty solidly, and it has something of a "fluid effect" smoothness, but it's not the absolute best for videography. Still, for the price, it has a lot of nice little touches, like a weight hook and carrying handle (if you choose not to use the included case). It came bundled with my Fuji X-S1, and it holds this chunky camera without any issue.
Pros:
Lightweight, inexpensive.
Cons:
Not the sturdiest, but good for the price if used for light duty.

very nice piece for the money. I was very skeptical as it was an open box but the item arrived in very new condition. looked like it had never been opened.
Pros:
very good range. pan head works well but isn't phenomenal. range is smooth but if your looking for a professional unit this isn't it. for the money this is a very good value.
Cons:
definitely not a professional unit but nice and extremely sturdy for the money paid.

very light and adequately functional

Written By ShivV, Houston, TX on Wednesday, May 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When you pick up this tripod - you are bound to notice the light weight. Tripod is very functional with two level displaying bubbles, pan head and directional adjustment, accessory hook etc. understanding how to operate is a breeze. I like that you can take out the base screw camera to it and easily attach it to the mount. I was ready to take this out of box and start shooting. it was shipped quite fast too. happy with the purchase.
Pros:
Light weight, not expensive, easy to operate
Cons:
Does not seem super sturdy, cover bag seems a little cheapish

Tripod

Written By ojohnsten, Kearney, ne on Sunday, December 16, 2012

ok, tripod. Not the most sturdy thing I have used but it works. I have not been a big fan of the specialized base that you have to attach so that whatever you want to mount, mounts to the tripod head. Why don't they just put a screw in the head to screw into whatever you want to mount?
Pros:
light weight.
Cons:
specialized base the you have to mount to whatever, then clip into the tripod head.

OSN OS-500

Written By Aurel, Detroit, MI on Thursday, May 31, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This tripod is OK, especially for the price. Fit&finish is good, and the tripod is stable...except a small loose into its head. I had to exchange mine because the first one I received had it head's thread totally worn out (the camera was floating). Thanks Crutchfield for the quick exchange. Overall it's ok for my novice use
Pros:
cheap, quick installation/removal of the camera, tripod stable
Cons:
tripod's head is a bit loose, loose some precision here. Might not last long if you use it hard
