Our take on the Velbon Sherpa 600R

by Kristen Schaub
Velbon

Need a versatile tripod that lets you position your camera low to the ground or at full standing height? Velbon's Sherpa 600R features three-section telescopic legs that can extend the tripod to almost five and a half feet tall. You can also fold up the legs and remove the center column to get stability at just 11-7/16" high. Shoot portraits of your subjects standing at full height, or get down low for macro shots of a flower or bug. Plus, each section of the aluminum legs locks in place easily with a lever to ensure a stable platform for your camera.

The joystick-style grip lets you tilt your camera up or down, or smoothly pan your camera across a scene. Or you can lock both the pan and tilt movements with one twist when you're done making adjustments. The handle is even mounted on the left, which lets you keep your right hand free to operate your camera.

You can screw the included quick-release plate into the threaded tripod socket of your camera and leave it in place. That way, you can quickly attach and detach your camera from the tripod, so you'll be ready for unexpected photo opportunities when they come up. If you already have a favorite tripod head, or want to use a Velbon professional ball head, you can easily remove the panhead and mount almost any tripod head in its place.

Extremely nice tripod!

Written By EricF, Martinsburg, WV on Friday, June 01, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is definitely a very nice tripod. It is pretty light for as sturdy as it is. The head on it supports my Nikon D90 with battery grip and a 105mm micro lens (which is pretty heavy) with no sagging after tightening it down. It stays right where I was pointing it when I tighten the head down. This is my first quick release tripod, so obviously that option is a huge bonus. The legs are very nice, at the top there are notches in the legs and metal pull down stops. You push the stops up and the legs will swing all the way out like the flat picture for close ups. You can swing the legs out at two other different stops as well and then pull the metal stops down to "lock" in the legs to keep them all at the same angles.

All around, a great tripod.

Very Pleased

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I studied tripods for weeks. I did not want to spend a lot of money, but wanted features of more expensive tripods. I took this on a week trip through Maine taking pictures of lighthouses and the shoreline. This tripod did all I wanted and I am very satisfied. I would recommend it to the first time buyer.
