But it's full of thought-out touches that will increase your efficiency. The center column has a super-fast quick-release lever with a safety lock, so you can adjust your height in seconds. The foam-padded leg grips help you to readjust the unit while keeping a tight hold on your pivot legs. The legs themselves individually lock at 3 different positions for loads of flexibility in selecting shooting angles.

The Sherpa+ 530 leg set is suitable for a range of Velbon heads, including the FHD51QN video tripod head. No head is included with this item, so you'll need to choose an appropriate one for your shooting needs before you can be off working in the studio or the field.

Fantastic Tripod for the Money!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was really glad to locate this tripod set of legs on Crutchfield. The price was the best I could find. I have bought several cheaper tripods that include the more economical mounting plate. All have really been a waste of money. I finally got a great deal on a Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick ball head. What a great product, but found it really shaky on my cheaper tripods that had to be modified to accept the Joystick. The Velbon Sherpa+500 was just what I needed to mount my Canon 60D to a solid platform. As the other reviewer mentioned, you still have to get the 1/4" to 3/8" adapter, but this is really no problem. Amazon has them for about $10 (I recommend the one by Manfrotto that has a small knurled rubber plate). The more expensive 600 model has the adapter for both thread sizes.

Pros: Very sturdy and easy to setup. Versatile with all kinds of configurations. Nice travel bag. Rubber foam grips on legs. Perfect for more expensive ball heads without having to order much more expensive tripods.

Cons: None that I can see.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great tripod holds the weight of my camera great.

Pros: holds the weight of camera mine is a canon 7d and I have my 70-200mm lens on and it is steady as a rock. love the height on both how low it goes and how high.

Cons: If the head you are going to attatch to it is a 3/8" you will need an adapter from the 1/4 to the 3/8. not a big deal just wish I would have realized this up front. The model up from this has both the 1/4 and 3/8 included into the tripod.

Overview: The Velbon Sherpa+ 530 is a high-quality set of tripod legs. The Sherpa+ series is a step-up from the Sherpa series, with thicker aluminum legs and a Magnesium alloy body. Panheads are not included.

Recommended Panheads:The tripod has a 1/4" head screw. The following Velbon panheads are recommended for use with the Sherpa+ 530:

3-Section Aluminum Legs: The 3-section telescoping legs include quick lever leg locks for quick and easy leg positioning. The legs can be set to three angle adjustments: Standard, Semi Low, and Full Low position. The non-slip rubber feet provide steady, free-standing support.

Center Column: The 2-piece center column, or elevator, gives you an 11.42" range of vertical movement. The lower section can removed to allow the tripod to be placed in the Full Low position.

Accessory Hook: The tripod comes with an accessory hook that can be screwed onto the bottom of the center column. This can be used to hang a camera bag, purse, or other items to keep them off the ground or floor. You can also attach a weight to the tripod for maximum stability, especially in windy conditions.

Good all-around tripod

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 5/16/2012 12:20:00 PM

As a general-purpose tripod, there's a lot to like about the Sherpa+ 530. Its magnesium/aluminum construction keeps it light, and the leg surfaces slick. Those foam grips aren't just for looks.

The quick-release worked well, and more importantly, really locked down the center column when engaged. Speaking of the center column, it unscrews into two sections, so I could really get the tripod low. And I could attach my camera to either end, so I had a choice of lengths available.

And even though it was lightweight, the legs are fairly thick, giving the tripod good stability.
