Born in Brooklyn and built to perform

Each pair of SR80e headphones is still made right in Brooklyn, New York where the Grado family has been building award-winning audio gear for more than 60 years. Like all Grado headphones, the SR80e uses a vented "open-air" earcup design with large, non-resonant air chambers for powerful, extended bass response and a more open, spacious sound. The diaphragms in each SR80e driver have been put through a special "de-stressing" process that allows them to deliver more music detail for an even larger soundstage. The drivers are also carefully matched to within 0.1 dB for enhanced stereo imaging. Plus, Grado gave these 'phones a stout four-conductor connecting cable for enhanced signal flow and bass control.

From our review of Grado's previous SR80i Headphones:

The standout point for me was the wearability — these headphones felt really comfortable for extended listening at work, and there was a minimum of ear fatigue at medium volume levels... if you want a day-in, day-out working headphone companion that faithfully reproduces your song collection... you should put a set of Grado SR80i headphones into the mix.

Features

e series: The Grado e series represents the company's third generation of headphones. Every aspect of the headphones; the drivers, cable, plug, even the glue; has been upgraded for better sound quality and dynamics. As in the previous series, the e series headphones are all made by hand at Grado's facility in Brooklyn, NY.

Prestige Series: Grado's Prestige Series of headphones has a retro look and a sound quality that is the result of over 60 years of audio research. These headphones make the pure Grado sound signature available in an affordable package.

SR80e: The Grado SR80e on-ear headphones feature an open back design that produces a full, more realistic experience. The new polymer body helps to eilminate resonances that can cause distortion. The newly-designed drivers in the SR80e are matched to within 0.1dB for optimum stereo imaging.

Included 6.5mm Adapter: The SR80e has a high-quality 68" 4-conductor audio cable with a 3.5mm gold-plated plug. The plug has a sturdy molded sleeve with ample stress relief. Included in the box is a gold-plated, snap-on 6.5mm (1/4") adapter that you can use with your home audio components.

Note: The size of the plug sleeve may cause interference with some smartphone cases.

Replaceable Cushions: The high-quality foam rubber ear cushions can be removed for cleaning, if needed. If they show signs of wear, you can replace them with the Grado Replacement Cushion S.

Note: The headphone's ear cushions are not covered in the manufacturer's one-year warranty.

Q
do they cancel out noise from neighbors carpentry banging and construction and demolition?
alice h  Apr 22, 2021

A
They are not noise canceling headphones.
john  Apr 29, 2021
A
They absolutely will not. They are open back and will allow almost all ambient noise to reach your ears.
jay  Apr 29, 2021
A
No, on the ear head phones allow you to hear (slightly) what is going on around you, which in my case is good. Nothing can sneak up on your and you can hear if someone calls your name. You probably want over the ear type. However these phones are great sonically and allow you to listen without disturbing others.

Grado SR80e's are sitting proudly on my Wharfdale's as I write this. Wonderful Headphones, though a little light on the low end. No for the construction noise cancellation, open, airy, easy for hours of late night listening but you can hear everything around you, or very near. Closed, over-the ear at the very least, noise cancelling if you can fit a god pair in your budget. Crutchfield is tempting me with the Sony WH-1000XM4 they have on sale as of this reply. Maybe Shure SRH440 for wired in the $100 range or JBL Live 500BT if you want wireless, but read the other reviews. Happy Listening and hoping for quieter times for you. TLM
thomas  Apr 29, 2021
A
No. You'll have to cancel him ??!
gregory e  Apr 28, 2021
A
Open back headphones aren't cancelling anything. I bought them because background noise CAN still be heard.
donald  Apr 28, 2021
A
Yes and your husband also
brian  Apr 28, 2021
A
No not really. Theae are open back design. You want to go with a closed back design with noise canceling technology.
scott  Apr 28, 2021
A
Hello, they do not cancel out noise; they are 'open backed' headphones.
david  Apr 28, 2021
A
No, not particularly. It's an open-air design that allows some (though not a lot) of environmental noise to come through.
steven nicholas  Apr 28, 2021
A
No, these headphones were not designed for that. These sit on the ears, but do not cover them. Over the ear headphones would be a little better, but most headphones will not cancel out that much loud noise.
mark  Apr 28, 2021
A
No, they are open ear and do not block loud noises.
william  Apr 28, 2021
A
In that case i'd go for a Noise Cancellation type headphone.
stephen  Apr 28, 2021
A

Q
I ordered a pair of Grado SR80e headphones, as a gift to a friend, who is in the hospital. When he opened the package, he could not understand how to "find" the 1/8 inch miniplug..Is the 6.5 mm (1/4 inch) adapter shipped attached over the miniplug ?

A
Yes, from memory you just need to pull or screw it off
brendan  Sep 01, 2020
A
The adapter is supposed to be included. I don't remember if it came attached. If all he sees is the 1/4", he needs to pull it off to reveal the 1/8" plug.
eduardo  Sep 01, 2020
A
Hi , I think the 1/4 is attached to the mini.
david  Sep 01, 2020
A
The 1/4 adaptor can be pulled off. The 1/8" plug is underneath.
steven  Sep 01, 2020
A
The miniplug is attached to the end of the cable. Just pull off the 6.5mm adapter if it's attached.
robert  Sep 01, 2020
A
Mine came with the 1/4" adapter installed. It's a snap-on connector. Pull firmly where metal meets plastic. The 1/8" plug is left attached to the cord.
allan  Sep 01, 2020
A
Yes I believe it is. If you remove the larger plug the smaller one is underneath. Thanks
stephen l  Sep 01, 2020
A
I do not remember how mine came shipped, but, yes, the main plug is the 1/8" and you should be able to remove the 1/4" easily.
chad  Sep 01, 2020
A
Yes, exactly right, just pull the 1/4" adapter off the end of the cable.
brian  Sep 01, 2020
Q
I want to use these headphones with my desktop PC. Would they work well paired with the Audioengine D3 or would I need the Audioengine D1?
dennis  Dec 03, 2019
6 answers
A
The Audioengine D3 works great with the Grado headphones. Simple plug and play operation. Volume is controlled by the keyboard on my Dell laptop. The sound is great using Spotify and even better with Tidal!
james  Dec 19, 2019
A
I have the D1 so I can't really answer the question directly, but I have used them with my phone and Roku remote and they sound exceptional on all of them including my 7 year old D1
donald  Dec 18, 2019

I have no idea I own eight pairs of full over ears ear phones The Grado sounds the Most musical . Highs miss an lows are even and pleasant they are my favorite pair
edgar  Dec 18, 2019
A
They will be fine with either unit as they are very high efficiency. Be aware that they are "open" headphones and others will be able to hear them in a cubicle or open office setting.
lawrence p  Dec 18, 2019

I use mine with an Audio Quest DragonFly Red v1.0 DAC. I'm not familiar with the Audioengine devices but do know my Grados work fine at wfnm 89.1 FM when I host my show. They use DACs too but I'm afraid I don't know the brand/models. These are outstanding headphones for the price and sound better than many phones I've used in the $300 range.
dan  Dec 04, 2019
A
I have owned these headphones for over 10 years - I use them in my IPod and Dell Inspiron laptop. BEST I've ever had especially for the price. I use them 7 days a week!

Q
I need phones for my TV , this doesn't seem to fit the bill.. do you have anything I can see?
jean  Jan 29, 2018
2 answers
A
I use these for TV. I simply adjusted the tone-range on the TV's sound to get the proper sound. They do push out the bass so I reduced the TV's bass range, slightly reduced the treble and didn't need to adjust midrange at all. Sounds great and doesn't disturb my Wife when I crank up the volume. These are excellent headphones for the price and in my opinion, outperform many of the phones in the $300 price range.
dan  Dec 04, 2019
A
You are correct. The Grado phones are for stereo music and are excellent for that. Not sure what is suitable for TV. Maybe something from Beats?

Q
best $100 headphone ever?
majorstewie  Nov 21, 2014

A
The Grado SR80e are excellent open headphones. In that budget I also have the Sennheiser HD518, who don't have such good sound definition, but may be are more comfortable to wear.
german velez  Nov 24, 2014
A
Absolutely, no regrets very comfortable and great sound from rock to classical music . Enjoy !
ralph  Nov 24, 2014
A
For on-ear, open backed headphones, it was the best $100 I've spent. Although I'm somewhat biased, these were the first good quality headphones I ever purchased ;) I'd recommend them as a good first pair of headphones for someone who hasn't experienced the world of high quality audio before, as long as you don't mind the small amount of bi-directional sound leakage that occurs with open backed headphones.
marianne  Nov 22, 2014
A
A good headset for the money. I have not physically compared the SR80e with others in its price range, but the sound is as good as my pricier Sennheiser eH350. Only downside is the supplied cable is a little stiff and requires an optional extension to comfortably move about.
anthony  Nov 22, 2014
A
Maybe not the best ever, but definitely a solid option at this price point.
brennen k  Nov 22, 2014
A
I don't know about that, having only sampled a few. But it's the best of the one's I've tried. Great sound, and it's comfortable.
patrick  Nov 22, 2014
A
It'd be hard to beat them for 100, but you may prefer the 325s for a couple hundred more.
brian  Nov 22, 2014
Q
Can you tell me how long the cord length is please?
thomas  Aug 25, 2014

A
copy pasted from details page. Cord Length83"
majorstewie  Nov 21, 2014
A
155 cm (~61 in.) from the plug to the point where the cord splits into two. Each of the two cords then extends 30 cm (~12 in.) from the split to the bottom of each ear piece. So total length 185 cm (73 in. ~ 6 ft.)
marianne  Sep 06, 2014
A
About 70 inches to the bifurcation of the cord to each headphone.
david  Sep 01, 2014
A
6 or 7 feet depending on if you measure to the junction or to the ear.
richard s  Aug 28, 2014
A
Thomas, the SR80E comes with a 6 foot cord.
barry  Aug 27, 2014
A
The cable length is 7 feet.
cornel  Aug 26, 2014
A
Just over 6 feet from the base of the headphones.
brennen k  Aug 25, 2014
A
It's about 82" from the earphone itself. The two wires meet at ~11".
benjamin  Aug 25, 2014
A
The cord is aprox. 2 mts long.
german velez  Aug 25, 2014
A
The cord is 6 feet. Plenty long enough!
steven  Aug 25, 2014
A
It's right at 70" to the yoke, and from there, an additional foot to each ear cup.
