Grado

Our take on the Grado SR80i

Grado sound for a song

Want warm, balanced, natural sound that can transport you straight to the heart of your music — without breaking the bank? Look no further. Grado's SR80i headphones are an affordable introduction to what high-end audio is all about. You'll experience powerful dynamics, and the kind of focus and sonic detail you'd expect from much more expensive 'phones. They can be easily driven with a portable music player or laptop, and include a 1/4" adapter plug so you can enjoy 'em on your home system, too.

Born in Brooklyn and built to perform

Each pair of SR80i headphones is still made right in Brooklyn, New York where the Grado family has been building award-winning audio gear for almost 60 years. Like all Grado headphones, the SR80i uses a vented "open-air" earcup design with large, non-resonant air chambers for powerful, extended bass response and a more open, spacious sound. The diaphragms in each SR80i driver have been put through a special "de-stressing" process that allows them to deliver more music detail for an even larger soundstage. The drivers are also carefully matched to within 0.1 dB for enhanced stereo imaging. Plus, Grado gave these 'phones a stout four-conductor connecting cable for enhanced signal flow and bass control.

From the review Grado SR80i Headphones: Striking the balance between music and ambience

"The standout point for me was the wearability — these headphones felt really comfortable for extended listening at work, and there was a minimum of ear fatigue at medium volume levels... if you want a day-in, day-out working headphone companion that faithfully reproduces your song collection... you should put a set of Grado SR80i headphones into the mix."

— Woody, Crutchfield A/V Writer

Features

Vented diaphragm: Grado headphones have a vented diaphragm design for a large, airy, three-dimensional sound.

Drivers: The diaphragm is made of a low mass polymer, developed with the compliance of the suspension in mind to achieve the desired low frequency response. The diaphragm's total mass is designed to provide a full 20 kHz bandwidth, while avoiding break-up at lower frequencies. The left and right drivers are matched to within 0.1 dB for exact imaging.

Connecting Cord: The 4-conductor cable design improves the control and stability in the upper and lower frequency range.

First, I must say that I bought these headphones since they are made in America. They sound great, are comfortable and easy to store since the earpieces swivel. They have a heavy duty cord which is a definite plus and actually, a surprise. The adapter for stereo pin jack or 1/4 inch is included. I am very satisfied and expect these to last a long time. I highly recommend them.
Pros:
Heavy duty cable, comfortable, great sound
Cons:
None so far.

Great Grado Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

Grado, known for high-end headphones, has produced a medium priced headphone that sounds like it costs much more. The headset is comfortable. The foam earpieces sit on your ears, rather than surrounding them. This open air design makes your music audible to others in the room, and also does not exclude noise; so if you want total isolation, buy a different product. The sound is excellent, highs are detailed, lows present. Some may like a hotter top end, but I would guess their ears are fried and they need some boost to the upper frequencies; I think the balance is just fine. I'm more accustomed to phones with sealing ear cushions, so it will take a bit more listening to know if these will become my favorites. I like these headphones a lot.
Pros:
Excellent sound, good price, wonderful Crutchfield service with quick shipping and the confidence that they will support you after the purchase.
Cons:
The cord is only about six feet, too short for most living room listening positions. You will need an extension, which will be expensive if you buy the Grado cord.

Awesome sound w/ a caveat

These headphones sound fantastic, there's no doubt about it. The clarity is unmatched by anything I've used in the past. The impact is just right and the soundstage is huge. They're quite comfortable as well and are driven by portable devices with relative ease. Here's the deal: they're open-air which means that everyone around you can hear what you're listening to, and you can hear what everyone around you is doing. So, these headphones are not so good if you want to use them in cubicle-ville or at home with people who don't want to hear what you're listening to (like my wife and kids). And I don't mean a little trickle of sound, I mean computer speaker-level volume. If you live by yourself and want a good pair of on-ear monitors, these are for you. If you're constantly around other people you may want to think hard before you buy these (by virtue of this review you can tell that I DIDN'T think hard!). Hope this helps.
Pros:
-unmatched sound, great treble, mids, and nice tight, punchy bass
Cons:
Open-air design means others can hear you and you can hear them

You will not find a better quality headphone in this price range.. The sound is amazing, lifelike, as if you are there listening to a live performance. Very detailed sound. I have tried almost 9 sets of headphones from $50 to $300 and nothing compares so far. The only thing to keep in mind is they are open back style headphones so do not expect complete silence for the listeners around you. The benefit of this design is you truly feel as if you are live or in a room of speakers. It is also nice because you can hear when the phone rings or if someone is talking to you while wearing them. Great job Grado!!
Pros:
Amazing sound - spacious - detailed - comfortable (I can wear these for hours) - light weight - quality construction
Cons:
Not the headphones you want if you are concerned about disturbing someone near you such as in bed or traveling. Not a CON if you want great sound

The sound quality is absolutely incredible, unfortunately I don't think I can keep these because the sound can clearly be heard by anyone not wearing the headphones. As a student in college, I cannot bring these to a library to study. I don't want to disturb people around me.

If I wasn't going to be using these in preferably silent setting then I would 100% satisfied.
Pros:
Incredible sound for the price. I was blown away.
Cons:
Music is very audible to people nearby not wearing them.

Great sound, but not for everyone

Written By EricF, Sacramento, CA on Thursday, March 01, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I purchased these with with the intention of using them in a couple of different ways. First, I wanted a pair of better sounding headphones to use while traveling in conjunction with my phone (DroidX) and/or MP3 player (iPod Nano). Additionally, I wanted to be able to use them with my home A/V receiver to watch movies and listen to music at night when I don't want to disturb the rest of the family.

Good news first: sound quality is exceptional and blows away any in-ear headphones I've used in the past. The difference is akin to listening to music through a door and then opening the door. Construction and fit are also very good and I had no issues wearing the headphones for the better part of a 10 hour flight recently.

There are two areas where these headphones have limitations that should be considered. First, they seem to require a bit more power to drive them, and as a result won't play as loud when used with a portable device like my phone. I found that I had to increase the volume considerably over what I usually set it at for my in-ear headphones to achieve the same volume level. When used with my A/V receiver at home, this is obviously not an issue. Second, per their design, these headphones don't block much (if any) ambient noise. So, when used in noisier environments (like airplane cabins) it makes it difficult to fully hear. Noise cancelling units should be considered in these types of environments.
Pros:
Outstanding sound quality, good fit & finish
Cons:
Require more power, don't block ambient / environmental noise
