About the Grado SR80i

Dave Bar

Grado sound for a song

Each pair of SR80i headphones is still made right in Brooklyn, New York where the Grado family has been building award-winning audio gear for almost 60 years. Like all Grado headphones, the SR80i uses a vented "open-air" earcup design with large, non-resonant air chambers for powerful, extended bass response and a more open, spacious sound. The diaphragms in each SR80i driver have been put through a special "de-stressing" process that allows them to deliver more music detail for an even larger soundstage. The drivers are also carefully matched to within 0.1 dB for enhanced stereo imaging. Plus, Grado gave these 'phones a stout four-conductor connecting cable for enhanced signal flow and bass control.

Grado sound for a song

Want warm, balanced, natural sound that can transport you straight to the heart of your music — without breaking the bank? Look no further. Grado's SR80i headphones are an affordable introduction to what high-end audio is all about. You'll experience powerful dynamics, and the kind of focus and sonic detail you'd expect from much more expensive 'phones. They can be easily driven with a portable music player or laptop, and include a 1/4" adapter plug so you can enjoy 'em on your home system, too.

From the review Grado SR80i Headphones: Striking the balance between music and ambience

"The standout point for me was the wearability — these headphones felt really comfortable for extended listening at work, and there was a minimum of ear fatigue at medium volume levels... if you want a day-in, day-out working headphone companion that faithfully reproduces your song collection... you should put a set of Grado SR80i headphones into the mix."

Features

Vented diaphragm: Grado headphones have a vented diaphragm design for a large, airy, three-dimensional sound.

Drivers: The diaphragm is made of a low mass polymer, developed with the compliance of the suspension in mind to achieve the desired low frequency response. The diaphragm's total mass is designed to provide a full 20 kHz bandwidth, while avoiding break-up at lower frequencies. The left and right drivers are matched to within 0.1 dB for exact imaging.

Connecting Cord: The 4-conductor cable design improves the control and stability in the upper and lower frequency range.

Q
Are these headphones useable with iPod/iPhone?

A
Yes.

Yes, they are. They are built with a mini plug that fits my iPod. It also comes with a 1/4 inch adaptor in case you want to plug into your home system. Some of the higher end models are built with the larger 1/4 inch plug, of which you would need to buy a separate adapter for playing on the iPod, which Grado / Crutchfield does sell. And by they way, the SR80i's will make your iPod sound incredible!

Yes, you can use the headphones with the iPod/iPhone. The jack is the same and the sound is good. I use them with my iPhone as the source plugged into a Little Dot III tube amp. the extra power improves the sound.

Yes they will plug directly into an Iphone or Ipod, but the cable is thicker than other headphone sets. This does not bother me, but it might be cumbersome for some folks. The quality of the sound from these head phones is very good for the price. You will not be disappointed in the sound quality.

I use my headphones with a Sony portable CD player. my computer, and Nano iPod and they work well. I don't know if they can be used with an iPhone. They are an excellent headphone for the money.
william  Dec 13, 2013
A
They work with any mp3 player because the plug has an adapter.

Yes they are, I bought mine specifically to use with a 4TH generation iPod Touch. If that's what you are thinking of using them for you may also wish to look at a headset amplifier as well. Mine is from a company called fios. It's about the same size & thickness as an older iPhone. You connect it with a short cord to the headphone jack on your iPhone / iPod. Then you plug your headphones into the small amp. I think it cost me about $80. When you turn them both on and start playing a song you would swear you are listening to a several thousand dollar stereo!

Jonathan, Yes they are very easy to drive. Perfect for an iPod or iPhone. No amp required here. Just remember these are open headphones. If your going to use them for commuting they won't work. Noise leaks out and noise leaks in. You need closed headphones. If these are for home use they will work. Better off though with a closed headphone though. Crutch field has a great selection of closed back headphones. The best customer service of any retailer.Good luck.

They'll work for listening. They have the right plug to fit. They don't have a microphone, of course, so you won't be able to take calls.
