Our take on the Mohu Sky 60 Amplified TV Antenna

by Steve Kindig
Mohu

Mohu's top-performing antenna

Mohu Sky antenna

Mohu Sky 60 mounted in an attic.

The long-range Sky 60 HDTV antenna is the newest addition to the Mohu family, and offers a fresh take on the conventional rooftop or attic mounted antenna. Like Mohu's other models, the Sky 60 is based on antenna technology developed for the U.S. military. With its compact design, the Sky 60 can be easily mounted in an attic, and for rooftop use, its compact size makes it a more visually appealing alternative to typical large long-range antennas. You can also mount it to an exterior wall wall or under an eave.

The Sky 60 can receive free over-the-air HDTV broadcasts from stations in the UHF and high-band VHF ranges (channels 7-51). It pulls in signals from multiple directions, so you don't have to move it to pick up signals from different TV towers. With a range of 60 miles, the Sky 60 provides crystal-clear picture quality for signals that are simply too weak for lesser antennas to grab.

Mohu's sophisticated signal amplifier

The Sky 60 includes Mohu's high-performance antenna amplifier. Its patent-pending technology increases reception range while filtering out the RF noise that can harm picture quality. The compact amplifier module connects between the Sky 60 antenna and your TV.

You have a couple of options for powering the amplifier. There's a mini USB port on the amplifier module, which allows you to power it off of any standard USB port on your TV — the USB-to-mini-USB cable is included. The advantage of USB power is that the amplifier will only draw power when the TV is turned on, instead of 24/7. If you don't have an available USB port on your TV, the amplifier also includes a regular AC power adapter, which you can plug into any standard wall outlet.

Features

Indoor/Outdoor Antenna: Weighing in at only 3lbs, the Sky HDTV 60 indoor/outdoor antenna is a powerful, amplified TV antenna solution that was developed from research for the United States military.

Amplifier w/ Clean Peak Filter Technology: The included digital amplifier with Clean Peak Filter Technology is designed to amplify TV stations and filter out any RF signals that can hinder picture quality. The digital amplifier allows you to pull in a clearer picture, more stations, and increase overall performance.

USB/AC Powered: The SKY HDTV 60 antenna's digital amplifier is powered via an integrated USB cable, which allows you to power the amplifier using an open USB port on the back of your TV. The advantage of doing so is that the amplifier will only draw power when the TV is turned on, eliminating parasitic power consumption when the amplifier isn't needed. If you do not have an open USB port on the back of your TV, the SKY HDTV 60 also includes a power cube that will enable you to power the amplifier using any standard AC wall outlet.

60 Mile Range:  The SKY HDTV 60 antenna performs best within 60 miles (UHF) and 45 miles (VHF) of transmission towers. Go here and enter in your zip-code to find out which free over-the-air HDTV channels are available in your area.

Multi-Directional: The Sky HDTV 60 antenna is multidirectional and does not have to be constantly readjusted for optimal signal strength. Because the Mohu SKY HDTV 60 is multi-direction, there is no need to point the antenna in any particular direction.

Mounting Options: The Sky HDTV 60 antenna is designed to be mounted in either your attic or on the outside of your house, preferably on the roof. Most users will receive the best signal the higher they mount the antenna. A mounting bracket is included. The antenna should be positioned vertically (not horizontally).

30' RF-Coax Cable: The Mohu Sky HDTV 60 includes a 30' detachable RG59-coaxial cable.

Mohu Sky 60

Written By Rick, Syracuse, In on Monday, June 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had no problems with this from the purchase thru the installation. I live 30 to 35 miles from 2 towns in complete opposite directions, and I've had excellent picture quality from all broadcast stations in these areas with my antenna placed in my attic. It's light weight and size made this simple to install in the attic. I would highly recommend this to everyone.
Pros:
Easy installation, great reception and light weight
Cons:
none

I mounted the antenna in my attic, and directed it to Chicago 55 miles away. I am able to receive 55 digital channels with excellent clarity. The reception is better than I expected, and I am driving 4 TV's from this antenna. This is a great product.
Pros:
Easy to mount, easy to connect - excellent reception.
Cons:
None for me.

Clear reception, easy setup and I like that the amplifier can be attached behind the TV while the antenna is placed on the roof line outside, unlike some units that require the amplifier be attached to the antenna. Didn't know about all the digital channels available that cable refused to carry.
Pros:
Easy setup, small profile.
Cons:
none

When I hooked up the TV Antenna and plugged in the booster into the 110volt outlet, it worked great. I got channels that i had never received before. That only lasted for a couple of weeks. I am assuming that the little booster failed and now I am back to receiving a couple of channels. I will try to update this after I talk with Crutchfield to see if they can get me a replacement booster.
Pros:
The channels were awesome before it quit working.
Cons:
Failed after a couple of weeks.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decent antenna. Easy to install (attic installation). No reception with only the amp that came with unit. I ended up using the amp that came with the unit between the attenna and splitter in attic and a second amp downstairs at the TV set, and that has worked.
Pros:
Easy to install.
Cons:
If you are in a fringe reception area, the antenna and amp that comes with it may not be enough.

Mohu Sky TV Antenna

Written By Jeff B, Richland, WA on Saturday, April 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Mohu Sky is working great. We pick up all 13 of the local on-air channels, and the 5 that are broadcast in HD are as sharp and stable as they were when received via cable. After the cable company converted to digital-only, which reduced the number of channels in our basic package and upped our monthly fee by $48 (4 TVs x $7 per digital box + $5 per box for HD), we're doing fine with PBS programming and local/national news from the broadcast channels. I'll miss AMC and TBS, but our DVD/streaming service fills that gap nicely. Maybe someday the cable company will figure it out and provide a convenient delivery system at an attractive price, but until then it's free TV for me. The only stumbling block I had during installation was that the splitter serving our 4 TVs is on the external wall of the house where the cable was connected. So that I could connect the antenna amplifier in-line before the splitter, I to had install a weather resistant in-use outlet on that outside wall. The In-use outlet takes its power from an existing outlet on the interior wall. (I had the help of an electrician friend.)
Pros:
Great HD signal.
Cons:
Required external power for amplifier on the outside wall where cable enters the house via a splitter.

Mohu Sky Antenna

Written By GoldDog, Marion, IL on Saturday, April 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna worked fine for about a week, I had it outside on a a 20 ft. mast. No matter what the ads say, this antenna is pretty directional but I live pretty far from the nearest TV transmitters. After a week my signal strength would go from 0 - 75% in the slightest breeze and finally! no signal at all one morning. I think something inside must have failed. Crutchfield refunded my $$ and I purchased a regular big aluminum antenna and it works fine. When it worked, it did a good job, I may have just got a bad one.
Pros:
Worked pretty good, received channel 12 from over 50 miles away.
Cons:
Failed after 2 weeks.

Not bad

Written By Tom Costa, Marion, Illinois on Monday, March 24, 2014

I think this antenna would be best in an attic and not on a 20'ft mast like I had it on. It worked fine for a week or two and then the signal strength would continuously vary from 0 to 75%. Eventually, after two weeks it quit completely. It has been really windy here and I think something must have broken inside the antenna. It just doesn't seem tough enough to be outside all the time. Crutchfield was GREAT and let me return it, even waiving the shipping. I kept the distribution amp I bought and put up a real VHF/UHF antenna and am very satisfied, customer service with Crutchfield is excellent.
Pros:
Works As advertised but it is pretty directional.
Cons:
Just isn't built for mounting on a mast in the elements.

Mohu Sky 60 Amplified TV Antenna

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After installing the antenna , I was only able to receive about 7, channels , the next day when the sun hit the antenna I was able to pick up around 25 in perfect clear as cable channels. I contacted Mohu Sky and they said they were forwarding a new one. The only problem is that I'm a winter visiter in AZ and am returning home this weekend and probably not be able to have it installed until the fall when I return. When it works the picture is great I would recommend it .
Pros:
Would like more channels

Pros:
Hook up was a cinch. Used existing cable wiring already installed in my walls. Installed in my attic. Easy! My husband was amazed when his petite little wife installed this without help!!!

The antenna is light way, easy to install. Reception is very good.
Pros:
Light, not that sensitive to direction, easy to install

Not sure the antenna amplifier is useful or not. I put it on and it does increase the signal strength. Could I got a bad one?

Great Antenna

Written By GaryM, Dunedin, FL on Sunday, January 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna was very easy to install, light weight, and great reception. I needed an antenna that had a range of over 30 Miles and this one did the trick. It picked up over 30 channels, the HD signal was shocking. Everyone that comes over can't believe its just an HD Antenna responsible for the picture quality.
Pros:
Easy to Install, Lightweight, Long Range
Cons:
Price, needed masonry screws for brick installation.

Mohu Sky Attic/Outdoor Antenna

Written By Jon, Oak Creek, WI on Tuesday, January 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I decided to cut the cable I looked for a HD antenna for over the air channels. Performance not price was the main objective, after all what good is a cheaper antenna if it doesn't work. I also liked the size and that it came with a mounting bracket. I mounted the antenna in my attic (upside down since that was the best way for mounting it) and I was able to get 40 channels. I didn't use the supplied amplifier as I already had a better one I was using to boost the cable signal. I would definitely recommend this product.
Pros:
Performance, size, mounting bracket
Cons:
mounting screws are cheap so don't use them.

Mohu Sky 60 Amplified TV Antenna

Written By Bubba, Stallings, NC on Monday, December 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife must watch the Tennis Channel which is only available on a sports tier plan with the accompanying extra costs that go with the pyramid of plans offered by Cable. This extra charge was vexing because we watch very little TV. I read about OTA's, especially the Mohu brand. I opted for the "Sky" (instead of the Sheaf) to mount in my attic. All the while, as I mounted (easily done) the antenna I was chuckling aloud, muttering that this was "old technology" and the result would be ghosts (literally) of the past on the screen. Well I was more than surprised when I went downstairs to the TV. The search for channels was up to 25% and yet there were no channels received. Then it started. I got 25 channels by 75% and a total of 37 channels when the scanning was 100% complete! The definition was identical to my CABLE HDTV reception. My wife agreed that the picture was excellent with no squirms, squiggles, nor ghosts. The bad news was that of the 25 channels (we found 12 duplicates) none of them included ESPN which was the alternate channel on which to watch Tennis matches. So back it went to Crutchfield where the return was made so easy with their UPS prepaid return address that was obtained on line. My wife suggested we keep the antenna installed in case ESPN became available. Well of course ESPN did become available two weeks after I returned The Sky antenna. I am not miffed because the product is easily installed and of rugged quality. I am delighted.
Pros:
Solid construction and made in the USA. Crystal clear HD reception -you cannot distinguish between OTA and cable reception. Will no longer have to pay for 30 music other unwanted channels.
Cons:
I can forsee no problems due to the heft and quality of the "Sky". And I am still impressed with the "Made in the USA" sticker.

Significant improvement over previous antenna

Written By Ed P, Fuquay-Varina, NC on Monday, November 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was using a Mohu Leaf antenna for OTA reception. It was an improvement over another retailer's indoor amplified antenna. But the new Mohu Sky is even better than their Leaf. All the hardware needed to mount it in my attic was in the box including a good 30-foot length of small diameter coax cable which was easy to snake through the stud wall behind the TV.

The Sky improved my signal strengths about 10-20% across all the OTA channels I receive. That was definitely worth it.
Pros:
Significant increase in signal strengths Easy to install in attic High quality mounting hardware included Generous return period to try it out
Cons:
None

Has anybody used this antenna in San Diego, CA?. [ Enrique  Jul 18, 2014 ]

  • I am using the Mohu in Guntersville Alabama. Had it for two weeks now. So far very pleased with it. Easy to install. Before installation I received four channels on an indoor flat antenna. With the Mohu mounted to my roof I now receive 16 channels very clearly. Very pleased if it continues to perform this well. [ Jim R.   Jul 23, 2014 ]
  • We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Krissy Staff  Jul 20, 2014 ]
What is the effective range of this attenna. We life approximately 48 miles from the main transmission stations? [ Mike  Jul 15, 2014 ]
14 answers
  • Hello Mike, I believe the advertised range is 60 miles. Our location is roughly 45 miles from the transmitter site and on a slope heading down into a valley so we placed the antenna in the attic which would place it slightly below the surrounding horizon. We received more channels and the reception is very good. This is inside an attic which research told us should reduce the range somewhat. We did locate it near the end of the roof up near the peak such that the majority of the signals we wanted were thru the attic vice the roofing. That being said, we have picked up signals from other directions with very good reception and clarity. Our fallback was to mount the antenna to an outside structure. The Sky 60 is rated for indoor/outdoor. We're sold on ours. The very clear return policy made it an even easier decision to give it a try. Hope this helps. [ ERNEST   Jul 17, 2014 ]
  • I'm not sure. I live about 30 miles. It seems ok. I thought there would be more channels. I"m not sure if I'm really sold on it yet... [ David   Jul 17, 2014 ]
  • It seems to depend on the topography around you. I live in a medium size community (N.E. USA) and can receive transmissions (some 10 channels very clear). I bought one for a friend who live 10 miles away from my town and is on a side of a hill and they can't receive any transmissions. My farthest station I can pick up is a bout 45 miles away. At 48 miles and relatively open rolling land you should have no problems in my opinion. Now the antenna is only on the upper most floor right now . So if it is on a long vertical pole it might pick up more stations up to the 60 mile limit as advertised. [ scot   Jul 17, 2014 ]
  • I cannot give you an accurate response because I don't know how far away they are with a direct route. My husband uses this in his shop and gets twice as many stations (26) than with any other antenna he has had. Many come from 50-60 miles away when traveling by car. He loves this antenna. Hope this helps. [ Rosalie   Jul 16, 2014 ]
  • I live in Valparaiso, IN and am picking up Chicago, IL stations amazingly. But it also depends on the terrain. I am surrounded by corn fields and the land is flat for the most part [ Derek   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • Difficult for me to answer because of the unique experience i had with this antenna. It's supposed to have a range of 60 miles. All I can do is share my experience. On first setup, i received as many as 25 channels. Some as far as Bowling Green, Kentucky which is roughly 132 miles from me. Pictures clear but after 30 minutes or up to two hours later disappeared. Or pixeliated, or appeared and disappeared off and on. The amplifier proved to be defective. So I used it without an amplifier. and got channels again as far away as Bowling Green and two from Somerset which is about 45 miles away. And one from Indiana. But they'd come and go as described above. I finally got an old-fashioned ceramic enclosed amplifier which stopped the pixeliation and on again off again, BUT now only picks up channels within 44 mile range. Which are all the channels local to my area. So what's the range? I don't even think the antenna itself knows based on my experience with it. [ James   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • It is around sixty miles [ Timothy   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • The range is listed at 60 miles. My antenna is 30 miles in one direction and 35 miles in the opposite direction from the transmission towers. Also my antenna is mounted in my attic. I have every channel available to me, and the quality is HD perfect. I would think that if you mount it outside, you should get the channels in your area. You might get them if mounted in your attic, but it will depend on any obstacles in its path. [ RICHARD M   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • I have had this antenna for 3 weeks and I'm very happy with the performance. Getting perfect HD picture 40+ miles away. I would think you will get good reception at 48 mile. [ Allen   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • Not good, transmitters are 40 to 60 miles away on flat terrain, digital break up especially at night. I'd return mine if I could. [ Roger   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • Mike I recieve all but one station with in 50 miles the one is sometimes broken up with no pattern why. I wanted a antenna I did not have to move so I could record without changing direction and this seem to do the job. Bill [ Bill   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • I live about 24 miles from six stations and I get four well and one so so and one not at all. I live 60 miles from Richmond Va and don't get any of those channels. Still I am happy with the ant. I have not tried aiming the dish in any way. It is on the railing of my balcony. Jim H. [ JAMES   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • I'm told that it had a 60 mile range. Our house is 30 miles in one direction and 35 miles the opposite direction from the towers. My antenna is in the attic, and the pucture is perfect on all channels. If it is placed outside, it might get even further reception. [ RICHARD M   Jul 15, 2014 ]
  • On average I'm seeing about 40-50 miles. Good Product. [ Tony   Jul 15, 2014 ]

My problem is not being far away from the transmitters; in fact, we perhaps live too close to them. We have no direct line of sight to the towers, and we live on a hill that puts us in a shadow of the transmission. We probably receive sidelobe signals, if anything. Also, our house is surrounded by very tall trees, further hindering OTA signal reception. Thus far, we've tried rooftop antennas and powered multidirectional antennas, and still cannot get a clean signal. Would this antenna help at all? [ Jonathan  May 15, 2014 ]

  • I am not sure, but try this Antennas Direct ClearStream4 HDTV Antenna , Terk RG6 Indoor/Outdoor, Satellite/Cable/Antenna Coaxial Cable - 100', Motorola Signal Booster 2-Port BDA-S2 Cable Modem TV HDTV Amplifier . If you need more than 2, then choose 4 w/ good splitter if needed. Then go to antennapoints. I installed these for my friend who has same problem like your. Make sure clear view with no tree or anything block. Good luck [ HOA   May 23, 2014 ]
