About the iDatalink Maestro SW Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Jon Paul

Don't lose control

You're tired of your car's stock radio, but you don't want to lose the convenience of your steering wheel audio controls. iDatalink's Maestro ADS-MSW adapter allows you to retain those controls when you install a new car stereo in a wide range of vehicles. It's compatible with over 1700 vehicles made after 1998, and it'll work with just about any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Eclipse, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, Visteon, and Valor.

Program it yourself

You can install the ADS-MSW yourself if you have experience installing car audio gear — keep in mind that you'll have to splice into your vehicle's wiring and solder connections. Before installing, you'll program the adapter at the iDatalink site to work with your particular vehicle and car stereo. Using the intuitive web programming interface, each factory button can be assigned a specific radio function. If your vehicle isn't covered, the Maestro is the only steering wheel adapter that allows you to program your car using a simple step-by-step web procedure.

Assign each control a secondary function

And here's a great feature that's unique to this adapter — you can also choose and assign a secondary "press and hold" radio function to each factory button, effectively doubling what can be controlled. For example, touch the "Volume Up" button, and it'll turn up the music. Hold down the "Volume Up" button, and you can switch on the loudness on your car stereo. Warranty: 1 year.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle to connect this adapter.

More details on the iDatalink Maestro SW Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Product Research

Features

Steering Wheel Control Interface: The iDatalink Maestro SW Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio. The Maestro SW lets you retain original steering wheel functions and assign a secondary press & hold feature to the buttons of your choice. The Maestro SW also lets you instantly create firmware for vehicles that are not included in the coverage list using a simple step-by-step web procedure.

Note: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required.

Compatibility: The iDatalink Maestro SW is compatible with over 1400 vehicle models with analog steering wheel inputs from 2000 to date, and with most aftermarket radios (Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, Dual, Eclipse, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony). The aftermarket head unit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input or wired remote connection.

Note: Please enter your vehicle information and aftermarket head unit model to confirm compatibility.

Flashing the Module: The supplied USB cable plugs into your Windows PC or MAC computer and allows you to flash (program) the Maestro SW with the appropriate vehicle's firmware to prepare it for installation. Simply download Weblink Desktop (for Windows and Mac) onto your computer to access the appropriate firmware. System requirements include -

  • Windows PC (10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP/2000) or Mac OS X (Mojave [10.14], HighSierra [10.13], Sierra [10.12], El-Capitan [10.11])
  • Available USB port (version 2.0 or 3.0)
  • 4GB RAM or more
  • 200MB available space on HDD
  • Internet connection

Note: Not compatible with Chromebook and other operating systems not listed above.

Q
Will this work with 2015 Subaru Forester?
john  Jan 04, 2024
1 answer
A
We need to know more details about your specific Forester for any confirmation of compatibility, John. Please use our online Vehicle Guide in the link below to enter your exact trim level details for your 2015 Forester, and we will pair parts that are compatible. When changing the radio in your year Forester's using an iDatalink ready radio with the Maestro interface in the first link and the iDatalink HRN-RR-SU1 in the second link is usually the best move to retain the most original vehicle features. If you need any help at all choosing your radio or specific install package and getting your order placed, do not hesitate to call us at 1-800-324-9695 and an Advisor would be happy to help! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_794ADSMRR/iDatalink-Maestro-RR-Interface-Module.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_794HRRSU1/iDatalink-HRN-RR-SU1-ADS-MRR-or-ADS-MRR2-module-also-required.html

Q
Will I still be able to use my call answer and call cancel buttons with this product?
toby j  Jun 11, 2021
1 answer
A
The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. Q
I have a boat with a separate control panel on the back. Could this make those buttons work with a new radio?
jonny  Apr 22, 2021
1 answer
A
This is not expected to adapt those controls to work with a different radio. Typically, those controls often built onto a wired remote, will have to be replaced with an all new wired remote. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get help checking what can be done on your boat

Q
I have the Acura TL type S 3.5 liter V6 so will this work for my car bc it said this was for a 3.2 liter?
michael  Mar 28, 2021
1 answer
A
So if it works or not for your car really depends on the radio you put in and the system your car runs on. If it says it works for a 3.2 I dont see why it wont work on a 3.6. I had to do quite a bit of troubleshooting with mine upon initial instillation, but I havent had to mess with it since 2019 and its worked great. So much so that sometimes I forget that it didnt come with the car

Will this allow me to long-press or dedicate a steering wheel button to activate Google Assistant?
cory  Jun 06, 2019

A
On this module each factory button can be assigned a specific radio function. If your stereo gives you Google Assistant functionality, the steering wheel control, if compatible with your vehicle, should easily be programmed to access that feature!

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.
kristina  Jan 02, 2019 (Staff)
A
Probably, most of their products are universal and you download your vehicles info online. Good luck in hooking it up. The instructions are vague and when you need a specific cars wires to interface the unit for installation there is little to no help unless you can find someone who had gone through the trial and error process already. A big gamble to take when you are hooking it up to a vehicles ECU. Mine is hooked up to the stereo unit of the car I purchased it for and is programed for the steering wheel also. It is "NOT" spliced into the OBD II port because I couldn't find the instructions (and yes I called tech support and searched online for 2 days) to be confident not to fry my cars computer.

Is cutting into to factor harness required to use this?
ryansievers  Oct 22, 2014

Yes, you have to splice into wires that go to the steering wheel controls. Quick connects do not work properly, you have to have a secure connection. I tried initially with quick connects and could not get it to work due to poor connection. Once I spliced and taped the wires, works like a charm
