Our take on the iDatalink ADS-KIT-MUS01 Dash and Wiring Kit

by Dave Delamere

Made for your Mustang

You've got your heart set on a new touchscreen GPS receiver, but you really want to keep your Mustang's dash looking good. Now, iDatalink's ADS-KIT-MUS01 factory integration package (along with their Maestro RR adapter, sold separately) gives you everything to need to install select receivers in your dash and wire it up to your Mustang. Best of all, you'll retain the use of your steering wheel audio controls, climate controls, and the Ford SYNC™ system, plus add some very cool features along the way.

A fit in the dash

iDatalink's ADS-KIT-MUS01 kit includes a dash console that matches the fit and finish of your factory dash. You'll retain the use of your Mustang's LCD display, which provides song and title information, station information, and caller ID for hands-free calling with Bluetooth®. You can operate your climate controls from a compatible receiver's touchscreen and the customizable buttons built into the iDatalink dash console. This kit also includes two integrated USB ports that work with your compatible receivers.

Wire it up

First, you connect the iDatalink Maestro RR adapter to your PC using its included USB cable, visit www.idatalinkmaestro.com/plugin and follow the instructions. Once you've indicated you're using the ADS-KIT-MUS01 kit and the Maestro RR has been "flashed," you're ready for the installation. Next, you'll either solder or crimp the wiring harness that's included in this package to your new Kenwood's receiver's wiring, just like you would with any Crutchfield wiring harness or wiring adapter.

The ADS-KIT-MUS01 kit comes with simple plug-in connectors for the iDatalink Maestro RR adapter and your Mustang's factory wiring harness. You'll also get a mono subwoofer RCA connection which directly plugs into the subwoofer channel of your Mustang's amplifier. With Mustangs that don't have the SYNC™ system, you can use the adapter's AUX IN RCA connectors to link the Mustang's factory auxiliary input to an auxiliary input on your new receiver.

The coolest part

Once you've installed a compatible receiver in your Mustang, you'll be able to use your receiver's touchscreen to check your tire pressure, battery voltage, and door ajar warnings. You'll also be able to choose which gauges you'd like to appear on the receiver's screen, and you'll even be able to check the engine codes when a warning light comes on.

Compatibility Notes: The iDatalink ADS-KIT-MUS01 kit must be used with the iDatalink Maestro RR adapter and a compatible Kenwood or Alpine receiver (See Details for receiver compatibility). This kit is only compatible with 2010-2014 Mustangs without the factory navigation radio.

Awesome product

Written By DS11, Ninety Six, SC on Monday, August 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to Install this in my 2011 GT500 after seeing it on a GT500 forum. The fit is great and its very functional. I was wanting a Touchscreen with NAV and this complements it perfectly. Its nice to have the quick buttons to take you to the climate controls or what ever you decide to use them for. I used a Kenwood 771HD with it.
Pros:
Gives you a cubby hole to put your Ipod and phone. Easy navigation with the buttons. Stock appearing.
Cons:
The only Con I see is that you have to take it apart to reprogram the buttons if you decide to go another route with them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Adds function and versatility to the Mustang that is needed. Gives you that much needed storage area to put your phone or other item instead of using your cup holder. Gives you touchscreen use with your Kenwood receiver and monitoring of vehicle diagnostics. Even lets you see the tire pressure in each tire instead of just a dummy light on the dash.
Pros:
Everything. Wiring is straightforward and simple.
Cons:
Nothing

Great Product

Written By Zach G, Lenexa, KS on Sunday, November 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great quality product that looks OEM when installed. The fit and finish of the product perfectly matches the rest of the car. Paired with the Maestro RR and a Kenwood DNX890HD this is the best possible replacement for any Mustang audio system.
Pros:
Sets the double din opening higher than any other dash kit for better accessibility Perfectly matches the dash to look OEM 5 buttons to access common functions, with 3 programmable Pocket to keep random items 2 USB connections for flash drives and phones
Cons:
The 5 buttons at the top of the radio seem a bit, "soupy". I wish they felt more like a mechanical keyboard and gave some physical feedback (click) when pressed.

Fianlly here!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What can I say? AWESOME!!!!!! I had the Metra kit, which was doable, but I was waiting forever for this kit to come out. The screen is raised for better viewing and with the Maestro, and my Kenwood 570, It is flawless... The color matches perfect, and the cubby hole to put my smokes and phone was much needed. The Stereo store had it ordered for me and was shocked that I had it in my hand... Buy it!!!!!!! My mustang is now complete!!!!m Video to come tonight!!!
Pros:
everything, but the 3 buttons for you to choose rocks!!!! It even has many buttons with the icon toset up the memory... Raised screen, better display of the LCD screen, Cubby at the bottom, price, easy install...
Cons:
The USB connections in the front are only for the after market stereo, and if you have an Apple device, you will have the Ipod cable sticking out..(I didn't use the USB)

What happens if I am wanting to use a head unit that is not compatible? What features would I be losing? [ Caleb Jordan  Jul 16, 2014 ]
1 answer
  • For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Krissy Staff  Jul 17, 2014 ]
How will I get access to my climate controls if I don't have Sync in my car? [ Kelsey  Jun 30, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • If you are installing in a 2014 Mustang without Sync (like mine), the harness with the kit will work without having Sync. I'd reccomend that you get the iDatalink Maestro for full Oem integration so you can use the steering wheel controls as long as you have a supported stero model. ADS install support is good - you can call them to get more specifics. [ ROBERT   Jul 03, 2014 ]
  • I think the climate controls are controlled independently from Sync over the can bus. iDatalink has a web sight for the maestro that lets you specify what option you have and it will let you know what this setup can control in your car [ ROBERT   Jul 01, 2014 ]
  • The Kenwood unit and face plate handle the climate control [ JOSEPH   Jul 01, 2014 ]
  • Im not sure about what happens without sync. But im sure the only difference from sync and no sync is the stereo controls. That being said. Climate controls are one of the only buttons on the maestro radio bezel. You tap climate control and the rest pops up on you headunit. [ AKEEM   Jul 01, 2014 ]
  • If I don't have sync u can't use this sorry :-( [ frank   Jul 01, 2014 ]
I have a 2013 v6 mustang WITHOUT sync. Will this kit work for me? If so, how? [ Kelsey  Jun 30, 2014 ]

  • For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Krissy Staff  Jun 30, 2014 ]
What size screen can I use with this kit? [ Hayden  May 03, 2014 ]
2 answers
  • I installed a 6.95 " Kenwood DNX890HD with this Kit in my 2013 Mustang GT. The double din head-unit fits perfectly without any issues. [ JOEL A.   May 06, 2014 ]
  • The screen size will depend somewhat on the compatible receiver you select. In combination with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately), the ADS-KIT-MUS1 lets you replace the factory non-navigation radio of your 2010-2014 Ford Mustang with a 2013 aftermarket Kenwood DNX/DNN-series head unit (sold separately). You can check out the compatible Kenwood units that will fit your vehicle here: http://www.crutchfield.com/fg_182350_FFBrand%7CKenwood/Kenwood-In-dash-GPS-Navigation.html?showAll=N&tp=20212 [ Jeff Staff  May 05, 2014 ]
