Our take on the Cinetics CineMoco System

by Woody Sherman

Smooth camera moves for great shots, time-lapse, and stop-motion

The Cinetics Cinemoco motorized dolly system is a revolutionary way to add production value to the videos and time-lapses you shoot. A robust, battery-powered drive motor is paired with an intelligent controller, and can be programmed for continuous repeatable moves, shoot-move-shoot time-lapse modes, or precise command-driven stop-motion photography. The resulting smooth moving shots that manipulate time and space are extraordinary, creating new ways to document the world that compel a viewer's attention.

The Cinetics Cinemoco motorized dolly system is portable yet versatile

The Cinetics Cinemoco motorized dolly system is portable yet versatile.

The system

The Cinemoco system marries different individual components to create a versatile moving point of view for your chosen camera. Traditional video cameras, action video cameras, or DSLRs and compact system cameras are all at home atop a compatible tripod head (not included) that's paired to this setup.

The track

Starting at ground level, we have a four-foot assembly of SkateTrack. These twin rails with outrigger legs provide the smooth, stable surface upon which the entire assembly rides. The SkateTrack breaks down in 2-foot sections in seconds and can be stored in a backpack. Additional SkateTrack sections can be added to expand your movement range.

The wheels

CineSkates V Wheels allow an even, smooth roll on flat surfaces and on the aforementioned SkateTrack. Underneath the main dolly frame (the SkatePlate), they form the primary structure support for your camera. The SkatePlate is fully compatible with all CineSkates, the CineSquid, and many other products in the Cinetics Connect family.

The drive system

Finally, the Cinemoco controller and motor are capable of continuous moves from .3 to 14.5 centimeters per second (.12 - 5.71 inches per second), and moves as tiny as .01 centimeters over 6500 seconds in time-lapse mode. Now that's fine motor control. Cables are included for tethering selected popular cameras to a computer for time-lapse control and processing (and many other control cables are available separately).

Why Cinetics?

Smooth moving shots are one of the primary building blocks of fine motion picture production. They put us into the scene on the screen, because they mirror how we experience the world. Our bodies act as a big shock-absorber for our eyes, plus our brain does internal image-stabilization along the way. So it's no wonder we like stable, even moving shots in our on-screen entertainment and no surprise that we can feel distracted by shaky handheld footage. A tripod often isn't enough for convincing movement, because it can only help for shots where your camera stays in one place. And moving the camera does more than make the experience seem real; it makes your camera a character, a participant, a narrator.

So consider what Cinetics gear can bring to the table for your next video project. Whether it's a simple home movie, a film school exercise, or a full-blown professional production, good camera mounting can make a world of difference in how your audience will experience what you've captured.

Features

Overview: The Cinetics CineMoco System includes the CineMoco Motorized Dolly with 3 V-wheels and the SkateTrack rail system. The CineMoco is a motor-controlled moving dolly for your camera or camcorder. The SkatePlate dolly frame has three retractable legs which can be extended to provide a sturdy rolling base. The V-wheels fit into the SkateTrack rails for a smooth rolling motion for your camera/camcorder. Two V-wheels are attached to the SkatePlate and you have the choice of using the M60 Stepper Motor and CineMoco controller for a motorized system or attaching the third V-wheel for a manual system.

Tripod Head Needed: The CineMoco System does not include a tripod head for attaching your camera or camcorder. A separate tripod head is needed in order to provide a standard 1/4" thread for mounting your camera, and to tilt or pan your camera for the desired shot composition.

CineMoco Controller: The brains to the CineMoco System is the controller, which is designed to drive and power the M60 Stepper Motor and a connected camera. It runs on a rechargeable battery with a 5-hour run time. The controller has a 128 x 64 graphic LCD screen to let you set up the movement and photo-shooting cycle. The on-screen menu lets you set up the following cycle parameters: interval, distance, exposure, direction. The controller connects to the camera by a shutter release cable, and will fire the camera at the set intervals. You can change the way the motor moves the dolly during a cycle: shoot-move-shoot (SMS), stop motion, or continuous. Speed range in video mode is from 0.3 to 14.5 cm/s. SMS intervals can be set between 0.2" to 6600 seconds, and travel distances as small as 0.01 cm.

Compatible Cameras: CineMoco video functions do not require a camera cable, and many cameras support time-lapse photography with their built-in intervalometer. Those cameras that do require a cable for time-lapse operation can be controlled with one of the included cables. The three included shutter release cables are compatible with the following cameras:

  • N3: Canon 1D series, 5D series, 6D series, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, and 50D
  • E3: Canon 60D, 60Da, Rebel (300D), Rebel XT (350D), Rebel XTi (400D), Rebel XSi (450D), Rebel T1i (500D), Rebel T2i (550D), Rebel T3i (600D), Rebel T4i (650D), Rebel XS (1000D), Rebel T3 (1100D), and Pentax K series DSLR
  • DC0: Nikon D800, D700, D300s, D300, D200, D4, D3 series, and D2 series
Note: Other cables are available from Cinetics to control select Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, and Sony DSLRs.

SkateTrack: SkateTrack is a 4' long rail assembly that provides a stable surface for the Cinetics CineMoco system. It includes four 24" long rails, three Rail Connectors, and two Outrigger Legs. The Rail Connectors hold the rails securely 180mm apart. Additional rails and Rail Connectors can be purchased, and fitted together end-to-end to make longer sections, if needed. The SkateTrack is made of anodized aircraft-grade aluminum, and easily disassembles and folds for convenient storage in the provided pouches.

Outrigger Legs: The included Outrigger Legs are adjustable so you can set up the SkateTrack in almost any environment. They screw onto the Rail Connectors, and provide a stable lift for the SkateTrack.

Take your time lapse movies to the next level

Written by Zak Billmeier, Staff Writer - Creative, on 9/27/2013 11:22:00 AM

The CineMoco system lets you add slow, controlled movements to your time-lapse videos. It's that little something that takes a time lapse video from good to truly great.

I used the CineMoco with a couple different Canon SLRs, and found the computer easy to program. One thing I figured out is that it will only fire the Canons with the Live View feature off — so if you're using Live View for framing purposes you just have to remember to do that. Otherwise, you just set an exposure on the camera and go.

Another tip I'll pass along is to use manual focus. Otherwise, the camera needs to find it's own focus for every shot, and depending on your interval that could be problematic. So I'd just eliminate that variable and focus manually.

This is a great intervalometer and motor, and your time lapse videos will be better than ever when you use it.
