The Audyssey South of Market doesn't look like your average iPod powered speaker system and it sure doesn't sound like one, either. In San Francisco, the South of Market neighborhood is a heady mix of high-tech business and artist's lofts. The South of Market Audio Dock draws inspiration from that cross-pollination of technology and artistic vision.
Side-firing woofers and angled tweeters provide wide stereo separation and a spacious soundfield. The system sounds great right out of the box. But when you download Audssey's free South of Market Audio Dock app to your iPhone or iPod touch you can fine-tune the sound of your music like a professional sound engineer.
The app lets you shape the sound with its Fast Slope Tone Control, which lets you "tilt" the EQ towards more highs or more lows, while automatically adjusting the other frequencies so the sound's not distorted.
With the Dynamic Volume activated, the South of Market Audio Dock smooths out volume discrepancies between tracks. And when you choose the background listening mode, your music still sounds good at low volume. Want more? How about the ability to shape the sound by creating your own EQ curves. It's yours with this powerful app.
You don't have to use the system's dock to play music, either. Built-in Bluetooth technology gives you the freedom of wireless playback, allowing you to stream music from any compatible device, such as your iPhone, iPad®, smartphone, or PDA.
And the wireless capability can turn the system into a high-quality speakerphone. Dual microphones and sophisticated voice-processing circuitry deliver clear, echo-free sound. You can use the system for incoming calls whether your iPhone is docked or undocked.
The South of Market Audio Dock has a USB cable that connects to your computer. It allows pass-through syncing of your docked iPod or iPhone. But it also lets you use the system in place of your computer speakers, so you can enjoy music and videos from your PC with amazing sound. And with a footprint of only 5" by 9", it won't take up much space on your desk, work area, or coffee table.
I received this product as a reward from one of Crutchfield's Facebook contests, and have been thoroughly impressed with the sound from it. I wanted to use it for some time before reviewing it. I am using it rather unconventionally I assume. I am in the minority, as I do not actually own an iPod (I know, I know). So I found it a bit ironic that I would win an audio dock without actually having the vital component to utilize it. Anyway, I teach guitar lessons for a living. Many of my students bring in music that they want to learn from their iPods. Previously, I was routing the music from the iPod to my effects pedal, a Line 6 Pod XT Live (as a passthrough via 1/8" cable) to my guitar amp (via 1/4" instrument cable). It was a jerry rigged, ghetto fabulous solution, but an effective one nonetheless. Now, I use the audio dock for students' iPods (via the actual dock terminal or 1/8" cable if they have an alternate MP3 player). The sound is incredible for such a small piece of hardware (relatively small)! Many thanks to Crutchfield! You guys rock!
Pros: Phenomenal sound and well built!
Cons: Runs a bit hot and the touch sensitive pause/play button on top is a bit finicky at times.
The only reason this does not outsell the Bose Soundlink is that nobody knows about the company. The clarity, imaging and bass is far better than Bose for the same price. If you don't need the portability of rechareable battery that the Bose offers, this is the best sounding dock currently on the market. High quality sound at any level. I bought from Crutchfield because of 60 day money back gurantee and slightly better price on extended warranty. The free app to customize equalization works very well and is easy to use.
Pros: Solid base, clarity
Cons: Power switch could be more convienient if not on back of unit.
Great sound ,great features and great value.
I love this product. The sound is great. I almost got a Bose which good as well. I checked out alot of the ratings on this product and decided to check it out. I'm glad I did.
Good sound. A little bulky, but still easy to move from room to room if needed. The item arrived broken, in that the plated insignia (which is also the way the volume is controlled) was broken off. Haven't tried to return it, but probably should. We can still make it work but have to make sure we don't lose the little piece that won't stay attached.
This is one of the best sounding docks I've heard. The speaker phone set up thru the dock leaves something to be desired and the remote is weak and has no on/off. However, In my opinion a sound docks primary function is to reproduce sound, in that respect it excels.
Cons: Weak remote
I found this dock via other searches for a high quality powered dock, the sound exceeds anything in the price range. Cabinet is well made, obvious quality and the shape is unique and stands out in the competition. I have no idea why this excellent dock is more well known for standing out in its league.
Pros: Sound Size Shape Quality Build
Cons: Nothing so far

2-Way Speaker Design: The South of Market Audio Dock contains two 4" long-throw side-firing woofers and two 0.75" silk-dome angled tweeters inside an acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure for deep bass, warm mids, and clear highs. Auydssey carefully calibrated the drivers' placement and voicing so that frequency and phase relationships remain intact and sound waves emanate outward to create a stereo image. The width of the sound field may vary due to reflections off of nearby surfaces depending on where you've placed the Audio Dock relative to other objects in the room (and the physical dimensions and construction of the room).
Class-D Bi-Amplification: Four separate Class-D amplifiers with active crossovers power the dock's two-way speaker system for greater dynamics, improved performance, and uncompromised sound quality.
