Our take on the ClarityOne™ EB 110

by Woody Sherman

A few months back, some ClarityOne earbuds appeared on a few desks here in the Crutchfield Creative department for a tryout. Those of us who received a pair spent a few days putting them through their paces. The consensus? Houston, we have a winner.

Let's be clear

The handsome ClarityOne earbuds live up to their name, with a crisp high register, natural, unforced mid-tones, and great extension at lower frequencies. And we were all struck by how well they played with a wide range of musical styles. Rock and rap thumped with a satisfying yet controlled power, and the higher frequency details of acoustic instruments — cymbal decays, aggressive violin bowing, a flatpicked 12-string guitar — shone through without feeling aggressive.

Lower your resistance

Just why do the ClarityOne earbuds deserve to be singled out? Well, it might be the fact that these headphones run at a low resistance: only 8 ohms. They can be more efficiently driven by lower power sources, like your phone or portable media player. Lower resistance means extended battery life as well.

Here's another noteworthy design feature: They have a built-in "PureSound Processor" which ClarityOne describes as canceling out inherent distortions and heat build-up that are present in most other earbud designs. The company's ultimate goal? "Pure sound in — pure sound out." If our enjoyable experiences are any indication, they're on to something.

The EB110s come with a handy in-line microphone for taking calls on your iPhone®. Three sizes of silicone ear tips help you get a secure fit, providing a strong acoustic seal while staying put during vigorous workouts. The cord doesn't tangle easily. And the included, rugged reinforced-mesh carrying case has a carabiner for easy attachment to your backpack or laptop case.

From our review

"There are three primary reasons I enjoy these headphones:

First, the EB 110s stay put and they're comfortable.

Second, they provide a good seal.

Third, these headphones are really listenable over the long haul."

— Woody, Crutchfield Home A/V Writer

Features

Overview: The ClarityOne in-ear headphones with PureSound Processor patented technology deliver bright mids, crisp highs, and clean deep bass for an amazing sound experience. The ClarityOne in-ear headphones include 3 sizes of custom silicone tips formulated to provide the perfect fit for the best possible sound experience. The in-ear headphones also feature an in-line remote/mic for your Apple iPhone or other smartphone. In addition, the ClarityOne features a tangle-free cable and comes with a convenient travel case.

Aluminum Enclosures: The ClarityOne in-ear headphones use high quality aluminum enclosures for long lasting durability and sound resonance.

Custom Silicone Eartips: The 3 sizes of custom silicone eartips are formulated to provide maximum noise isolation while keeping the earbuds secure and comfy in your ears.

Built-in PureSound Processor: The PureSound Processor is a one-of-a-kind technology developed over 12 years, tested by science and audio experts, and has six patents (with more pending). The PureSound Processor circuit provides an economical solution for achieving perfect phase unity between amplifiers and multiple driver systems. The PureSound Processor is not a crossover, it is a coupling unit. Unlike traditional crossovers, PureSound Processor's patented technology cancels out the counter EMF (electro motive force) and at the same time provides a two way magnetic brake on the voice coil which "couple" it to the amplifier, therefore allowing it to operate freely with no added distortions allowing for pure sound to enter the system (at crossover) and pure sound to exit (to the speaker). The innovation in this tiny piece of technology produces pure, clean, undistorted sound from your smartphone, MP3 player, iPod, or tablet so you hear every detail in your music the way the artist intended.

8-ohm Impedance: The higher the number of ohms, the higher the energy resistance of the sound processor or voice coil and the higher the energy needed to push the sound through the higher resistance. The ClarityOne earphones run at only 8ohms, which is at least half of any other earphone. Most other headphones run at 16 or 32 ohms; that means your battery and audio player have to work harder to pump out your favorite tunes. Much more harmonics are lost across a higher resistance or ohms than a lower resistance. Meaning higher resistance less harmonics. The ClarityOne's 8-ohm impedance provides better harmonics and overall sound quality. As a bonus, the 8-ohm impedance also extends your phone's or player's battery life.

In-Line Remote/Mic: The ClarityOne earbuds comes equipped with an in-line remote and mic (located on the headphone cable). This means that you can pause and play your music from the headphone's in-line remote. You can also answer and end phone calls from your iPhone or smartphone, using the in-line remote. The integrated slim-line, light-weight, precision microphone lets you carry on your side of the conversation, while the caller is heard through the earbuds. The built-in mic also supports voice control for Apple iPod touch (2nd/3rd/4th gen), iPhone (3GS/4/4S), and iPad (1/2) devices.

Apple Compatibility Chart: The ClarityOne earbuds are compatible with the following Apple iPod, iPhone, and iPad models (as of 2/2/2012).

If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Tangle-Free Wire: The ClarityOne in-ear headphones feature a 54" anti-tangle wire that is specially designed with a coating to prevent friction. Friction is the leading cause of tangle, which inevitably leads to earbud breakage.

3.5mm Connector: The ClarityOne headphone cable is terminated by a male 3.5mm connector. No other connectors or adapters are included.

Travel Case: The ClarityOne in-ear headphones come with a convenient travel case with carabiner clip.

Impressive Ear Buds

Written By The Hawk, Longwood, Florida on Sunday, December 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I completed my research on quality ear buds in the $100 to $120 range. I decided to purchase a pair of these ClarityOne EB110's. The sound quality and reproduction was excellent and the build quality was superb. They even come with a small zippered pouch with a hanger hook that you can loop through a belt loop or a back pack. A very nice addition. The only annoying problem that I came across was if you should move the cable wiring against your clothes while wearing the ear buds, the friction can be heard in the ear buds.
Pros:
Excellent sound quality and reproduction; excellent build quality; nice accessory package
Cons:
Rubbing or friction feedback can be audibly heard in the ear buds (when rubbing cable wiring against clothes).

Nice buds

Written By Mike A, Buffalo, NY on Monday, October 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with my new EB110's. The sound is very well balanced with strong bass, clear mids and bright highs. From there description I was afraid the highs may be to sharp but that is not the case. They sound very natural. Despite other reviews, I think the bass response is strong and full with out over powering the rest of the sound. The fit is the same as any other in ear, you stick them in and there they are. With three sizes to choose from, find the tips that fit your ears best and your all set. These buds are very small and lite so there's no issue with them feeling heavy or falling out. Because they are so small it is not easy to get a hold of them for removal so I tend to pull at the cord. Maybe not the best way to get them out but the cord does seem strong and stable. On the cord, near your neck, I like the little clicker that controls my ipod. Play/pause and track back and forth. Volume control would be nice but not that big of a problem for me. Over all, I like them a lot and would recommend them.
Pros:
Very nice clear and balanced sound. Not to high and not to low. High quality.
Cons:
Volume control would be a plus.

Do Not Believe the Hype!

Written By Javier, Chicago on Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Beware the sound is not going to blow you away like most reviews say...unless you are new to the premium earphone market then probably the sound will blow you away. I was expecting my ears to melt after visiting the manufactures website and reading up on the reviews.

I have had way better premium earphones for less like those from the well know sound system company that starts with the letter BQ$&.

I just feel that in general the hype generated from the manufacturer, ClarityOne, does not meet the expectations (with the whole revolutionary processor mumbo jumbo). Also the "customer" reviews almost always give above average if not fenomenal ratings which seems truly hard to believe once one actually has the earbuds in ones ears.

These earbuds in my opinion definitely are not worth the price if you can get them for under $80 and don't mind spending even that on them then go for it and get the urge out of you but any price higher than that will just make you want to kick your self afterwards.
Pros:
Once you have had other TRULY premium earphones it is hard to find any pros from these!
Cons:
-The sound on these earphones is just TOO clear in my opinion. -The bass is to weak, unless to crank up the volume and are within 1-3 decibels of blowing your eardrum. These two complaints keep true the unstated rule; you can not have sound clarity and bass at the same time, one will always come at the expense of the other. -Although they do fit great do not believe those who say, they never fall out EVEN when you wear them at the gym. unless you go have a picnic at the gym you should not

Great Sound & Noise Reduction

Written By ShawnB, Cedar Rapids, IA on Friday, July 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These Clarity One ear buds sound great and do a great job of reducing the noise level around my cubicle. The ear buds work like regular ear plugs in reducing the noise level and the actual music coming out sounds great and further muffles the noises coming from other cubicles. They work better then my Bose Quiet Comfort 2 Noise Cancelling head phones at eliminating and muffling noises around me. The only exception is that the Bose are better at eliminating machine noises. I discovered a static noise coming from my computer that I didn't even know I had until I used the Clarity One ear buds. The Clarity one ear buds work great with my iPod and I would recommend them over the Bose if your issue is noisy cubicle neighbors. The Bose won't reduce talking, chewing, crunching, etc. nearly as well as the Clarity One Ear buds.
Pros:
Great sound. Eliminates most noise.
Cons:
I'm not sure if this is a con for the ear buds or my iPod but I have my iPod volume on it's lowest setting and some songs still come through a little louder than I'd like. I wish I could turn down the volume a hair more.

Very clear but too bright and not for bass heads

Written By Mike A, Los Angeles,CA on Thursday, July 05, 2012

I got these very cool looking IEM for Xmas from my wife- unfortunately she bought them from a different retailer and not from Crutchfield. When i first got them, I hated them and tried to return them with no success. After burning them in and buying an amplifier- they're great for classical, jazz, and instrumental music. Not for Bass heads!!! The awesome carrying case is a plus.
Pros:
Crystal clear sound, great soundstage, the mic is a plus for iphone, Fantastic case!!
Cons:
Bass is weak

Comfortable & Sound Great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a pretty good ear for audio quality, and can be rather picky about the workmanship of a product. I also rarely review products unless they are truly worthwhile. These earbuds sound great and are very comfortable to wear. I would recommend them.
Pros:
Sound dynamics, comfort.

Great Sounding

Written By bts1225, Clarksville, TN on Saturday, March 31, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This are the best sounding ear buds I've heard however I gave them four stars because I can't get a good fit with them. They just won't stay in my ears very well no matter what size tip I use. I can only hope that maybe ClarityOne will come out with some tips like Bose's stay ear tips.
Pros:
Great sound.
Cons:
Not so great of a fit, hope they will improve on their ear tips.

Best I've ever owned

Written By DG, Indianapolis, Indiana on Friday, March 23, 2012

These ear buds are just fantastic. I couldn't believe the clarity once I put them in. First thing I noticed when I put them in was they were like ear muffs, all I could hear was my heart beat and myself breathing! They fit is so good, so comfortable even after hours of wearing them, which is rare. The sound, incredible. I love these!
Pros:
No outside noise, great fit, no ear fatigue, incredible sound

Absolutely amazing

Written By NinaG, Ashland, MA on Monday, March 12, 2012

I had some Beats by Dre ear buds before and they broke (my fault). I was about to buy a replacement pair from them but I decided to take a chance on these because I saw some great reviews on that show with Maria Menounos and Mario Lopez and wow am I glad I did! They sound SO much better than my old beats and fit way better too. These things sound incredible and when I workout at the gym, they stay in perfectly! I've never heard sound quality like this before. It's like I didn't even know it was possible or existed! I'm so glad I bought these and I really hope this company comes out with some over the ear models and maybe other colors/features.
Pros:
Great fit, comfortable, incredible sound

MY 10-year old Daughter LOVES them

Written By Tricia, Gastonia, NC on Tuesday, March 06, 2012

We picked these up for our 10 year old Daughter. She mentioned to us a few weeks later that they sound really good. At school she said the mute button comes in handy during computer lab as she is often caught off guard with the PC audio output that is way too loud. Another solid product and another positive experience at Crutchfield!
Pros:
I tried them out to be sure they were suitable.... very good sound quality!

All I Can Say Is WOW!!!!

Written By Joseph, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, February 28, 2012

I just received these after ordering them. I read some reviews online and also saw them on TV and thought, why not, I can always return them. Well am I glad I ordered them! They fit so well and that's the first thing I noticed. Then I turned the music on and holy cow I've never heard sound quality like this! I'm halfway decently versed on audio stuff, not an audiophile but not a novice and my gosh, I wish these guys would make home and car speakers too! These are incredible! Fit is good, sound is amazing and the outside noise goes away the second you put them in!
Pros:
Best sound quality I've ever heard, great fit, no outside noise
Cons:
None
